In this paper, we study the almost sure convergence for sequences of asymptotically negative associated (ANA) random variables. As a result, we extend the classical Khintchine–Kolmogorov convergence theorem, Marcinkiewicz strong law of large numbers, and the three series theorem for sequences of independent random variables to sequences of ANA random variables without necessarily adding any extra conditions.

In this paper, some results on the complete moment convergence for arrays of rowwise negatively associated (NA, for short) random variables are established. The results obtained in this paper correct the corresponding one obtained in Ko [13] and also improve and generalize the corresponding ones of Kuczmaszewska [14] and Ko [13]. As an application of the main results, we present a result on complete consistency for the estimator in a non-parametric regression model based on NA errors. Finally, we provide a numerical simulation to verify the validity of our result.

Markov chains (MCs) are widely used to model systems which evolve by visiting the states in their state spaces following the available transitions. When such systems are composed of interacting subsystems, they can be mapped to a multi-dimensional MC in which each subsystem normally corresponds to a different dimension. Usually the reachable state space of the multi-dimensional MC is a proper subset of its product state space, that is, Cartesian product of its subsystem state spaces. Compact storage of the matrix underlying such a MC and efficient implementation of analysis methods using Kronecker operations require the set of reachable states to be represented as a union of Cartesian products of subsets of subsystem state spaces. The problem of partitioning the reachable state space of a three or higher dimensional system with a minimum number of partitions into Cartesian products of subsets of subsystem state spaces is shown to be NP-complete. Two algorithms, one merge based the other refinement based, that yield possibly non-optimal partitionings are presented. Results of experiments on a set of problems from the literature and those that are randomly generated indicate that, although it may be more time and memory consuming, the refinement based algorithm almost always computes partitionings with a smaller number of partitions than the merge-based algorithm. The refinement based algorithm is insensitive to the order in which the states in the reachable state space are processed, and in many cases it computes partitionings that are optimal.

In this paper, we consider finite mixture models with components having distributions from the location-scale family. We then discuss the usual stochastic order and the reversed hazard rate order of such finite mixture models under some majorization conditions on location, scale and mixing probabilities as model parameters.

Bounds for aging properties in mixtures and their derivatives are provided. Such bounds allow control of the behavior of those characteristics through the aging properties of the distributions in the mixture. We also obtain some results for discrete mixtures involving exponential distributions. In addition, well-known mixture-preserving properties for several distribution classes are derived with little algebraic complexity.

We consider a monotone binary system with ternary components. “Ternary” means that each component can be in one of three states: up, middle (mid) and down. Handling such systems is a hard task, even if a part of the components have no mid state. Nevertheless, the permutation Monte Carlo methods, that proved very useful for dealing with binary components, can be efficiently used also for ternary monotone systems. It turns out that for “ternary” system there also exists a combinatorial invariant by means of which it becomes possible to count the number C(r;x) of system failure sets which have a given number r and x of components in up and down states, respectively. This invariant is called ternary D-spectrum and it is an analogue of the D-spectrum (or signature) of a system with binary components. Its value is the knowledge of system failure or path set properties which do not depend on stochastic mechanism governing component failures. In case of independent and identical components, knowing D-spectrum makes it easy to calculate system UP or DOWN probability for a variety of UP/DOWN definitions suitable for systems of many types, like communication networks, flow and supply networks, etc.

We consider a single-server Markovian queue with synchronized services and setup times. The customers arrive according to a Poisson process and are served simultaneously. The service times are independent and exponentially distributed. At a service completion epoch, every customer remains satisfied with probability p (independently of the others) and departs from the system; otherwise, he stays for a new service. Moreover, the server takes multiple vacations whenever the system is empty.

Some of the transition rates of the underlying two-dimensional Markov chain involve binomial coefficients dependent on the number of customers. Indeed, at each service completion epoch, the number of customers n is reduced according to a binomial (n, p) distribution. We show that the model can be efficiently studied using the framework of q-hypergeometric series and we carry out an extensive analysis including the stationary, the busy period, and the sojourn time distributions. Exact formulas and numerical results show the effect of the level of synchronization to the performance of such systems.

Recently, there is a growing interest to study the variability of uncertainty measure in information theory. For the sake of analyzing such interest, varentropy has been introduced and examined for one-sided truncated random variables. As the interval entropy measure is instrumental in summarizing various system and its components properties when it fails between two time points, exploring variability of such measure pronounces the extracted information. In this article, we introduce the concept of varentropy for doubly truncated random variable. A detailed study of theoretical results taking into account transformations, monotonicity and other conditions is proposed. A simulation study has been carried out to investigate the behavior of varentropy in shrinking interval for simulated and real-life data sets. Furthermore, applications related to the choice of most acceptable system and the first-passage times of an Ornstein–Uhlenbeck jump-diffusion process are illustrated.

We consider a reflected independent superposition of a Brownian motion and a compound Poisson process with positive and negative jumps, which can be interpreted as a model for the content process of a storage system with different types of customers under heavy traffic. The distributions of the duration of a busy cycle and the maximum content during a cycle are determined in closed form.

We present a rigorous study of the short maturity asymptotics for Asian options with continuous-time averaging, under the assumption that the underlying asset follows the constant elasticity of variance (CEV) model. The leading order short maturity limit of the Asian option prices under the CEV model is obtained in closed form. We propose an analytical approximation for the Asian options prices which reproduces the exact short maturity asymptotics, and demonstrate good numerical agreement of the asymptotic results with Monte Carlo simulations and benchmark test cases for option parameters relevant for practical applications.

Some properties of repair age (the elapsed time since the last repair) and the residual repair life (the time until the next repair) are studied for the minimal repair process under various assumptions on the aging characteristics of the equipment under maintenance. Bounds on expected repair age and expected residual repair life are obtained. Some characterizations of the Poisson process are also proved.

An important problem in reliability theory is to determine the reliability of a system from the reliability of its components. If E is a finite set of components, then certain subsets of E are prescribed to be the operating states of the system. A formation is any collection F of minimal operating states whose union is E. Reliability domination is defined as the total number of odd cardinality formations minus the total number of even cardinality formations. The purpose of this paper is to establish some new results concerning reliability domination. In the special case where the system can be identified with a graph or digraph, these new results lead to some new graph-theoretic properties and to simple proofs of certain known theorems. The pertinent graph-theoretic properties include spanning trees, acyclic orientations, Whitney's broken cycles, and Tutte's internal activity associated with the chromatic polynomial.

The concept of Energy Packet Network (EPN) proposed by Gelenbe, is a new framework for modeling power grids that takes distributed energy generation such as renewable energy sources into consideration, and which contributes to modeling the smart grid. Based on G-network theory, this paper presents a simplified model of EPN and formulates energy-distribution as an optimization problem. We analyze it theoretically, and detail its optimal solutions. In addition to using existing optimization algorithms, a heuristic algorithm is proposed to solve for EPN optimization. The optimal solutions and efficacy of the algorithm are illustrated with numerical experiments. Further, we present an EPN with disconnections and a similar optimization problem is investigated. Optimal solutions are presented, and numerical results using the analytic optimal solutions, random solutions, a cooperative particle swarm optimizer and a heuristic algorithm illustrate the power of different approaches for solving energy-distribution problems using the EPN formalism.

We show that the time to extinction in critical or subcritical Galton–Watson and Markov branching processes has the antiaging property of log-convex density, and therefore has the decreasing failure rate (DFR) property of reliability theory. Apart from providing new insights into the structure of such extinction time distributions, which cannot generally be expressed in a closed form, a consequence of our result is that one can invoke sharp reliability bounds to provide very simple bounds on the tail and other characteristics of the extinction time distribution. The limit distribution of the residual time to extinction in the subcritical case also follows as a direct consequence. A sequel to this paper will further consider the critical case and other ramifications of the log-convexity of the extinction time distribution.

We consider a system of K parallel queues providing different grades of service through each of the queues and serving a multiclass customer population. Service differentiation is achieved by specifying different join prices to the queues. Customers of class j define a cost function ψij(ci,xi) for taking service from queue i when the join price for queue i is ci and congestion in queue i is xi and join the queue that minimizes ψij(·,·). Such a queuing system will be called the “join minimum cost queue” (JMCQ) and is a generalization of the join shortest queue (JSQ) system. Non-work-conserving (called Paris Metro pricing system) and work-conserving (called the Tirupati system) versions of the JMCQ are analyzed when the cost to an arrival of joining a queue is a convex combination of the join price for that queue and the expected waiting time in that queue at the arrival epoch. Our main results are for a two-queue system.

We obtain stability conditions and performance bounds. To obtain the lower and upper performance bounds, we propose two quasi-birth–death (QBD) processes that are derived from the original systems by suitably truncating the state space. The state space truncation in the non-work-conserving JMCQ follows the method of van Houtum and colleagues. We then show that this method is not applicable to the work-conserving JMCQ and provide sample-path-based proofs to show that the number in each queue is bounded by the number in the corresponding queues of these QBD processes. These sample-path proof techniques might also be of independent interest. We then show that the performance measures like mean queue length and revenue rate of the system are also bounded by the corresponding quantities of these QBD processes. Numerical examples show that these bounds are fairly tight. Finally, we generalize some of these results to systems with more queues.

This article presents a new iterative method for computing the equilibrium distribution of a finite Markov chain, which has the significant advantage of providing good upper and lower bounds for the equilibrium probabilities. The method approximates the expected number of visits to each state between two successive visits to a given reference state. Numerical examples indicate that the performance of this method is quite good.

In this paper, we develop a new method for evaluating the reliability polynomial of a hammock network. The method is based on a homogeneous absorbing Markov chain and provides the exact reliability for networks of width less than 5 and arbitrary length. Moreover, it produces a lower bound for the reliability polynomial for networks of width greater than or equal to 5. To investigate how sharp this lower bound is, we compare our method with other approximation methods and it proves to be the most accurate in terms of absolute as well as relative error. Using the fundamental matrix, we also calculate the average time to absorption, which provides the mean length of a network that is expected to work.

In this paper, we review different definitions that multi-state k-out-of-n systems have received along the literature and study them in a unified way using the algebra of monomial ideals. We thus obtain formulas and algorithms to compute their reliability and bounds for it. We provide formulas and computer experiments for simple and generalized multi-state k-out-of-n systems and for binary k-out-of-n systems with multi-state components.

For a two-node tandem fluid model with gradual input, we compute the joint steady-state buffer-content distribution. Our proof exploits martingale methods developed by Kella and Whitt. For the case of finite buffers, we use an insightful sample-path argument to extend an earlier proportionality result of Zwart to the network case.

This article derives amazingly accurate approximations to the state probabilities and waiting-time probabilities in the M/D/1 queue using a two-phase process with negative probabilities to approximate the deterministic service time. The approximations are in the form of explicit expressions involving geometric and exponential terms. The approximations extend to the finite-capacity M/D/1/N + 1 queue.
