The existence of inductive limits in the category of (topological) measure spaces is proved. Next, permanence properties of inductive limits are investigated. If (X, , ) is the inductive limit of the measure spaces (X, , ), we prove, for 1 p 221E;, that LP(X, , ) is embeddible into the projectilimit of Lp(X, , ) in the category Ban, for p < , respectively in the category C* in the case p = +. As an application, we exten existence theorems of strong liftings to inductive limits.

The following theorem is typical of a group of results which have been found to be of importance in the theory of Cesàro summability.

We generalize the work of Sarnak and Tsimerman to twisted sums of Kloosterman sums and thus give evidence towards the twisted Linnik–Selberg conjecture.

We shall say that the sets A, B ⊂ Rk are equivalent, if they are equidecomposable using translations; that is, if there are finite decompositions and vectors x1,…, xd∈Rk such that Bj = Aj + xj, (j = 1,…,d). We prove bounds for the truncated directional Hilbert transform in $L^{p}(\mathbb{R}^{2})$ for any $1<p<\infty$ under a combination of a Lipschitz assumption and a lacunarity assumption. It is known that a lacunarity assumption alone is not sufficient to yield boundedness for $p=2$, and it is a major question in the field whether a Lipschitz assumption alone suffices, at least for some $p$.

The object of this paper is to prove the following:

Theorem. Every perfect septenary quadratic form assumes its minimum value at a set of 7 points with integer co-ordinates whose determinant is 1.

This is true also, as shown by Rankin [1], with n ≤ 6 in place of 7. The proof will be shortened considerably by using the weaker result obtained in [1] for n = 7, and we shall also use the following classical results, see, e.g., [2], for Hermite's constant γn:

We consider a class of singular Schrödinger operators H that act in L2(0,∞), each of which is constructed from a positive function ϕ on (0,∞). Our analysis is direct and elementary. In particular it does not mention the potential directly or make any assumptions about the magnitudes of the first derivatives or the existence of second derivatives of ϕ. For a large class of H that have discrete spectrum, we prove that the eigenvalue asymptotics of H does not depend on rapid oscillations of ϕ or of the potential. Similar comments apply to our treatment of the existence and completeness of the wave operators.

§1. An initial and boundary value problem. In this article we study the solution of an initial and boundary value problem of dynamic linear thermoelasticity in which both inertia and the coupling between mechanical and thermal effects are retained.

Our investigation starts from the question: is the even dimensional cohomology of the non-abelian group of order p3 and exponent p generated by Chern classes? From the computation of the complete cohomology ring in [8] one quickly sees that the essential problem is to express elements of the form cor (γk), γ ∈ H2 (k, ℤ), K a subgroup of index p, in terms of Chern classes. For a more general pair of groups (K ≤ G) it is known, see [7] that the best for which one can hope is a description of some multiple of cor (γk) in this way. Our first theorem shows that, under suitable hypotheses (satisfied in particular by the example of order p3) the numerical factor may be removed. Thus

We study the metric entropy of the metric space ${\mathcal{B}}_{n}$ of all $n$-dimensional Banach spaces (the so-called Banach–Mazur compactum) equipped with the Banach–Mazur (multiplicative) “distance” $d$. It is proved that the resolvent norm of an operator with a compact resolvent on a Banach space $X$ cannot be constant on an open set if the underlying space or its dual is complex strictly convex. It is also shown that this is not the case for an arbitrary Banach space: there exists a separable, reflexive space $X$ and an unbounded, densely defined operator acting in $X$ with a compact resolvent whose norm is constant in a neighbourhood of zero; moreover $X$ is isometric to a Hilbert space on a subspace of co-dimension $2$. There is also a bounded linear operator acting on the same space whose resolvent norm is constant in a neighbourhood of zero. It is shown that similar examples cannot exist in the co-dimension $1$ case.

Wave propagation in an elastic medium rotating with a constant angular velocity Ω about an axis is studied by the method of Lighthill [1]. The waves are created by a concentrated periodic force of fixed frequency ω at the origin. The changes in the wave pattern and the decay of amplitude are discussed when 2Ω. increases from zero to a value greater than ω.

In the part (16-3) of his extensive study on measurability in Banach spaces, Talagrand [12] considered the Banach space C(K) of continuous functions on a dyadic topological space K. He proved that C(K) is realcompact in its weak topology, if, and only if, the topological weight of K is not a twomeasurable cardinal (Theorem 16-3-1). Then he asked for an alternative to a rather complicated proof presented there (p. 214) and posed the problem whether C(K) is measure-compact whenever the weight of K is not a realmeasurable cardinal (Problem 16-3-2).

This paper is concerned with the geometry of a measure μ, and in particular with the relationship between various .s-dimensional densities of μ, the geometry of the support of μ and the question of whether s is an integer.

In the present paper a simple technique will be developed for the arithmetical determination of certain class group components and class number factors in finite number fields. This technique is based on classical theories (Hilbert's work on inertia groups, the theory of absolutely Abelian fields as class fields of congruence groups, absolute class fields of number fields). In keeping with the traditional approach to the subject we shall use here the language of ideal theory. The only non-classical concepts to be used (which, however, are of fundamental importance) are those of the inertia groups and the congruence groups associated to p-adic fields. We shall also give some illustrations of the use of our technique in some special cases. Further applications will follow in subsequent papers.

We investigate sums of mixed powers involving two squares and three biquadrates. In particular, subject to the truth of the Generalised Riemann Hypothesis and the Elliott–Halberstam conjecture, we show that all large natural numbers $n$ with $8\nmid n$, $n\not\equiv 2~(\text{mod} ~3)$ and $n\not\equiv 14~(\text{mod} ~16)$ are the sum of two squares and three biquadrates.
