We use the Buchstab-Rosser sieve to derive an asymptotic formula for the distribution of those integers n for which the r numbers n + l1, n + l2,…, n + lr are all square-free. Our error estimate sharpens a similar result of Hall and is uniform in both r and maxl 1≤i≤r|li|.

Problems about partitions of cartesian products are common in mathematics. For example, in finite and infinite combinatorics, they keep emerging in Ramsay theory, where one seeks to show that, if a product is partitioned into finitely many parts, one part at least must contain a subset of a certain specified kind. In the transition from finite to infinite products, one usually imposes restrictions of a topological nature on the partition, in order to obtain theorems analogous to those which are valid in the finite case. (See, e.g., [G-P], [Si], [E].)

Montgomery and Vaughan [12] have shown that the exceptional set in Goldbach's problem

for some Δ>0. Li [10,11] has shown that we may take Δ = 0·079 and Δ = 0·086. If the Riemann Hypothesis is true for all Dirichlet L-functions then (1) holds for any Δ<½. This is a classical result due to Hardy and Littlewood [7].

Marshall Hall has proved that every real number is representable as the sum of two continued fractions with partial quotients at most 4. This implies that for any real β1, β2 there exists a real α such that

The purpose of this work is to investigate the relationship between Radon transforms and centrally symmetric convex bodies. Because of the injectivity properties of the Radon transform it is natural to consider transforms on the sphere separately from those on the higher order Grassmannians. Here we shall concentrate on the latter, whilst the former will be the subject of another article presently in preparation, Goodey and Weil [1991].

A graph G (finite, undirected, and without loops or multiple lines) is n-connected if the removal of fewer than n points from G neither disconnects it nor reduces it to the trivial graph consisting of a single point. We present in this note a sufficient set of conditions on the degrees (valences) of the points of a graph G so that G is n-connected.

The main goal of this paper is to prove that the classical theorem of local inversion for functions extends in finite dimension to everywhere differentiable functions. As usual, a theorem of implicit functions can be deduced from this “Local Inversion Theorem”. The deepest part of the local inversion theorem consists of showing that a differentiable function with non-vanishing Jacobian determinant is locally one-to-one. In turn, this fact allows one to extend the Darboux property of derivative functions on ℝ (the range of the derivative is an interval) to the Jacobian function Df of a differentiable function, under the condition that this Jacobian function does not vanish. It is also proved that these results are no longer true in infinite dimension. These results should be known in whole or part, but references to a complete proof could not be found.

A two-dimensional fluid layer of height d is confined laterally by rigid sidewalls distance 2Ld apart, where L, the semi-aspect ratio of the layer, is large. Constant temperatures are maintained at the upper and lower boundaries while at the sidewalls it is assumed that the horizontal heat flux has magnitude λ. If λ = 0 (perfect insulation) a finite amplitude motion sets in when the Rayleigh number R reaches a critical value Rc, but in part I (Daniels 1977) it was shown that if λ = O(L−1) this bifurcation (in a state diagram of amplitude versus Rayleigh number) is displaced into a single stable solution in the region |R – Rc| = O(L−2), representing a smooth increase in amplitude of the cellular motion with Rayleigh number. All other solutions (or “secondary modes”) in this region were shown to be unstable. In the present paper an examination of the two intermediate regimes λ − O(L−5/2) and λ = O(L−2) is carried out, to trace the location of an additional stable solution in the form of a secondary mode, which stems from Rc when λ = 0, and which in the limit as λL2 → ∞ is shown to be removed from the region ߋR − Rc| = 0(L−2), consistent with the results of I.

We formulate some conjectures about the precise determination of the monodromy groups of certain rigid local systems on $\mathbb{A}^{1}$ whose monodromy groups are known, by results of Kubert, to be finite. We prove some of them.

A method of assessing the accuracy of an approximation to the steady two-dimensional flow of viscous incompressible liquid past a flat plate is developed. The approximate solution, with stream-function ψ1 is closely related to the boundary-layer solution, and is expressed in terms of the function used in that theory. The conditions at the surface of the plate and at infinity are exactly satisfied by ψ1 but the equation of (finite) motion is not exactly satisfied. However, ψ1 is an exact solution of a problem in fluid motion, if a body force, of appropriate magnitude depending on ψ1 is assumed to act on the fluid. The magnitude of this force provides a criterion of the accuracy of ψ1, and some use has been made [5] of this means of estimating accuracy. This criterion is, in effect, only qualitative, since it is not possible to make a numerical estimate of the effect on the motion of a body force which is non-conservative and acts over the whole field of flow.

In [CKR], Chan, Kim and Raghavan determine all universal positive ternary integral quadratic forms over real quadratic number fields. In this context, universal means that the form represents all totally positive elements of the ring of integers of the underlying field. This generalizes the usage of the term introduced by Dickson for the case of the ring of rational integers [D]. In the present paper, we will continue the investigation of quadratic forms with this property, considering positive quaternary forms over totally real number fields. The main goal of the paper is to prove that if E is a totally real number field of odd degree over the field of rational numbers, then there are at most finitely many inequivalent universal positive quaternary quadratic forms over the ring of integers of E. In fact, the stronger result will be proved that this finiteness holds for those forms which represent all totally positive multiples of any fixed totally positive integer. The necessity of the assumption of oddness of the degree of the extension for a general result of this type can be seen from the existence of universal ternary forms over certain real quadratic fields (for example, the sum of three squares over the field ℚ(√5), as first shown by Maass [M]).
