We present a type system based on session types that works on a conventional pi calculus. Types are equipped with a constructor that describes the two ends of a single communication channel, this being the only type available for describing the behaviour of channels. Session types, in turn, describe the behaviour of each individual channel end, as usual. A novel notion of typing context split allows for typing processes not typable with extant type systems. We show that our system guarantees that typed processes do not engage in races for linear resources. We assess the expressiveness of the type system by providing three distinct encodings – from the pi calculus with polarized variables, from the pi calculus with accept and request primitives, and from the linear pi calculus – into our system. For each language we present operational and typing correspondences, showing that our system effectively subsumes foregoing works on linear and session types. In the case of the linear pi calculus we also provide a completeness result.

We give a short and elementary proof of the Schröder–Simpson Theorem, which states that the space of all continuous maps from a given space X to the non-negative reals with their Scott topology is the cone-theoretic dual of the probabilistic powerdomain on X.

In this paper we study the dynamics of entanglement in some hybrid qubit–qutrit systems under the influence of global, collective, local and multilocal depolarising noise. We show that depolarising noise can be used to induce entanglement. A critical point exists under every coupling of the system with the environment at which all the states are equally entangled. Furthermore, we show that no ESD occurs when either only the qubit is coupled to its local environment or the system is coupled to a multilocal or global environment. This is an important result for various quantum information processing tasks and thus merits further investigation.

Divisibility monoids are a natural algebraic generalisation of Mazurkiewicz trace monoids, namely monoids in which the distributivity of the underlying lattices is kept as a hypothesis, but the relations between the generators are not necessarily supposed to be commutations. Garside monoids are a natural algebraic generalisation of spherical Artin monoids, namely monoids in which the existence of common multiples is kept as a hypothesis, but the relations between the generators are not necessarily supposed to be of Coxeter type. Here, we show that the quasi-centre of these monoids can be studied and described in a similar way, and then we exhibit the intersection between the two classes of monoids.

Iterative monads were introduced by Calvin Elgot in the 1970's and are those ideal monads in which every guarded system of recursive equations has a unique solution. We prove that every ideal monad has an iterative reflection, that is, an embedding into an iterative monad with the expected universal property. We also introduce the concept of iterativity for algebras for the monad , following in the footsteps of Evelyn Nelson and Jerzy Tiuryn, and prove that is iterative if and only if all free algebras for are iterative algebras.

We show how coalgebras can be presented by operations and equations. This is a special case of Linton's approach to algebras over a general base category ${\cal X}$, namely where ${\cal X}$ is taken as the dual of sets. Since the resulting equations generalise coalgebraic coequations to situations without cofree coalgebras, we call them coequations. We prove a general co-Birkhoff theorem describing covarieties of coalgebras by means of coequations. We argue that the resulting coequational logic generalises modal logic. This relies on the fact that coalgebraic operations respect an appropriate notion of bisimulation and can be considered as modal operators.

We investigate the use of conjunctive non-standard type inference for the elimination of useless code in higher-order typed functional programs. In particular, we present a non-standard type assignment system for detecting useless code together with a mapping that simplifies a program by removing the useless code detected using the system.

We investigate natural systems of fundamental sequences for ordinals below the Howard–Bachmann ordinal and study growth rates of the resulting slow growing hierarchies. We consider a specific assignment of fundamental sequences that depends on a non-negative real number $\varepsilon$. We show that the resulting slow growing hierarchy is eventually dominated by a fixed elementary recursive function if $\varepsilon$ is equal to zero. We show further that the resulting slow growing hierarchy exhausts the provably recursive functions of $\sfb{ID}_1$ if $\varepsilon$ is strictly greater than zero. Finally, we show that the resulting fast growing hierarchies exhaust the provably recursive functions of $\sfb{ID}_1$ for all non-negative values of $\varepsilon$. Our result is somewhat surprising since usually the slow growing hierarchy along the Howard–Bachmann ordinal exhausts precisely the provably recursive functions of $\sfb{PA}$. Note that the elementary functions are a very small subclass of the provably recursive functions of $\sfb{PA}$, and the provably recursive functions of $\sfb{PA}$ are a very small subclass of the provably recursive functions of $\sfb{ID}_1$. Thus the jump from $\varepsilon$ equal to zero to $\varepsilon$ greater than zero is one of the biggest jumps in growth rates for subrecursive hierarchies one might think of.

A number of program transformations currently of interest can be derived from Wadler's ‘free theorems’ for calculi approximating modern functional languages. Although delicate but fundamental issues arise in proving the correctness of free theorems-based program transformations, these issues have usually been left unaddressed in the correctness proofs appearing in the literature. As a result, most such proofs are incomplete, and most free theorems-based transformations are applied to programs in calculi for which they are not actually known to be correct.

The purpose of this paper is three-fold. First, we raise and clarify some of the issues that must be addressed when constructing correctness proofs for free theorems-based program transformations. Second, we offer a principled approach to developing such proofs. Third, we use Pitts' recent work on parametricity and observational equivalence to show how our approach can be used to give the first proof that transformations based on the Acid Rain theorems preserve observational equivalence of programs in a polymorphic lambda calculus supporting FPC-style fixpoints and algebraic data types. Correctness of the foldr-build rule, the destroy-unfoldr rule, and the hylofusion program transformation for this calculus follows immediately. The same approach is expected to yield complete correctness proofs for free theorems-based transformations in calculi that even more closely resemble languages with which programmers are concerned in practice.

In the paper Métayer (2001), Métayer transforms multiplicative proof-structures into orientable surfaces with boundaries. He investigates the link between the topological complexity and the number of exchanges in a sequentialisation. The theorem he achieves is about a particular rule of exchange (transpositions by blocks). We complete his approach by showing that the topological complexity does not provide any information in other cases (arbitrary exchange, upper bound of the number of exchanges). Then, we show that, on the other hand, the surface associated to a proof-structure is the surface of minimal complexity on which the proof can be drawn without crossing and respecting the local orientation.

A V-labelled poset P can induce an operation on the languages on any fixed alphabet, as well as an operation on labelled posets (as noticed by Pratt and Gischer (Pratt 1986; Gischer 1988)). For any collection X of V-labelled posets and any alphabet Σ we obtain an X-algebra ΣX of languages on Σ. We consider the variety Lang(X) generated by these algebras when X is a collection of nonempty ‘traceable posets’. The current paper contains several observations about this variety. First, we use one of the basic results in Bloom and Ésik (1996) to show that a concrete description of the A-generated free algebra in Lang(X) is the X-subalgebra generated by the singletons (labelled a∈A) in the X-algebra of all A-labelled posets. Equipped with an appropriate ordering, these same algebras are the free ordered algebras in the variety Lang(X)[les ] of ordered language X-algebras. Further, if one enriches the language algebras by adding either a binary or infinitary union operation, the free algebras in the resulting variety are described by certain ‘closed’ subsets of the original free algebras. Second, we show that for ‘reasonable sets’ X, the variety Lang(X) has the property that for each n[ges ]2, the n-generated free algebra is a subalgebra of the 1-generated free algebra. Third, knowing the free algebras enables us to show that these varieties are generated by the finite languages on a two-letter alphabet.

We study bialgebras and Hopf algebras in the compact closed category Rel of sets and binary relations. Various monoidal categories with extra structure arise as the categories of (co)modules of bialgebras and Hopf algebras in Rel. In particular, for any group G, we derive a ribbon category of crossed G-sets as the category of modules of a Hopf algebra in Rel that is obtained by the quantum double construction. This category of crossed G-sets serves as a model of the braided variant of propositional linear logic.

By studying two unsharp quantum structures, namely extended lattice ordered effect algebras and lattice ordered QMV algebras, we obtain some characteristic theorems of MV algebras. We go on to discuss automata theory based on these two unsharp quantum structures. In particular, we prove that an extended lattice ordered effect algebra (or a lattice ordered QMV algebra) is an MV algebra if and only if a certain kind of distributive law holds for the sum operation. We introduce the notions of (quantum) finite automata based on these two unsharp quantum structures, and discuss closure properties of languages and the subset construction of automata. We show that the universal validity of some important properties (such as sum, concatenation and subset constructions) depend heavily on the above distributive law. These generalise results about automata theory based on sharp quantum logic.

Proofnets may be seen as orientable surfaces with boundary. We investigate how the topology of such nets relates to the number of exchange rules in corresponding proofs.

We study full completeness and syntactical separability of MLL proof nets with the mix rule. The general method we use consists of first addressing these two questions in the less restrictive framework of proof structures, and then adapting the results to proof nets.

At the level of proof structures, we find a semantical characterisation of their interpretations in relational semantics, and define an observational equivalence that is proved to be the equivalence induced by cut elimination. Hence, we obtain a semantical characterisation (in coherent spaces) and an observational equivalence for the proof nets with the mix rule.

We relate the so-called powercone models of mixed non-deterministic and probabilistic choice proposed by Tix, Keimel, Plotkin, Mislove, Ouaknine, Worrell, Morgan and McIver, to our own models of previsions. Under suitable topological assumptions, we show that they are isomorphic. We rely on Keimel's cone-theoretic variants of the classical Hahn–Banach separation theorems, using functional analytic methods, and on the Schröder–Simpson Theorem.

Divergence and non-determinism play a fundamental role in the theory of computation, and their combined effect on computational equality deserves further study. By looking at the issue from the point of view of both computation and interaction, we are led to a canonical equality for non-deterministic computation, revealing its rich algebraic structure. We study this structure in three ways. First, we construct a complete equational system for finite-state non-deterministic computation. The challenge with such a system is to find an equational alternative to fixpoint induction à la Milner. We establish a negative result in the form of the non-existence of a finite equational system for the canonical equality of non-deterministic computation to support our approach. We then investigate infinite-state non-deterministic computation in the light of definability and show that every recursively enumerable set is generated by an unobservable process. Finally, we prove that, as far as computation is concerned, the effect produced jointly by divergence and non-determinism is model independent for a large class of process models.

We use C-graphs, which are interesting in their own right, as abstract representations of the computational objects throughout the paper.

We prove some results on the Wadge order on the space of sets of natural numbers endowed with Scott topology, and more generally, on omega-continuous domains. Using alternating decreasing chains we characterize the property of Wadge hardness for the classes of the Hausdorff difference hierarchy (iterated differences of open sets). A similar characterization holds for Wadge one-to-one and finite-to-one completeness. We consider the same questions for the effectivization of the Wadge relation. We also show that for the space of sets of natural numbers endowed with the Scott topology, in each class of the Hausdorff difference hierarchy there are two strictly increasing chains of Wadge degrees of sets properly in that class. The length of these chains is the rank of the considered class, and each element in one chain is incomparable with all the elements in the other chain.

In this short note we study the semantics of two basic computational effects, exceptions and states, from a new point of view. In the handling of exceptions we dissociate the control from the elementary operation that recovers from the exception. In this way it becomes apparent that there is a duality, in the categorical sense, between exceptions and states.

Simply typed λ-calculus with fixpoint combinators, λY-calculus, offers an interesting method for approximating program semantics. The Böhm tree of a λY-term represents the meaning of the program up to the meaning of built-in constants. It is much easier to reason about properties of such trees than properties of interpreted programs. Moreover, some interesting properties of programs are already expressible on the level of these trees.

Collapsible pushdown automata (CPDA) give another way of generating the same class of trees as λY-terms. We clarify the relationship between the two models. In particular, we present two relatively simple translations from λY-terms to CPDA using Krivine machines as an intermediate step. The latter are general machines for describing computation of the weak head normal form in the λ-calculus. They provide the notions of closure and environment that facilitate reasoning about computation.
