The male scaled squid Lepidoteuthis grimaldii hereby reported for the first time, is equipped with a pair of grossly enlarged sabre-like hooks. These unique hooks, found only on males, are without parallel amongst cephalopods. As a sexually dimorphic character, they are more likely to be involved in reproduction than predation.

Data on the diets of harbour seals (Phoca vitulina) from two islands in the Inner Hebrides (Scotland, UK) based on collections of faecal samples made in 1993 and 1994 are presented. The diet included a range of fish and cephalopod species, of which the most important were gadoids, particularly whiting (Merlangius merlangus), along with pelagic scad (Trachurus trachurus) and herring (Clupea harengus). There were significant temporal and spatial (between-island) differences in diet. The relatively high importance of pelagic species and the low importance of sandeels (Ammodytidae) is consistent with previous studies on grey seals (Halichoerus grypus) in the Inner Hebrides but differs from studies based in other parts of Scotland.

Trophic positions (TP) were estimated for the blue shark (Prionace glauca), shortfin mako (Isurus oxyrinchus), thresher shark (Alopias vulpinus), and basking shark (Cetorhinus maximus) using stable isotope ratios of carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N). The basking shark had the lowest TP (3·1) and δ15N value (10·4‰), whereas the thresher shark had the highest values (4·5, 15·2‰). Mako sharks showed considerable variation in TP and isotopic values, possibly due to foraging from both inshore and offshore waters. Thresher sharks were significantly more enriched in δ15N than blue sharks and mako sharks, suggesting a different prey base. The δ13C values of thresher sharks and mako sharks varied significantly, but neither was significantly different from that of blue sharks. No statistical differences were found between our TP estimations and those derived from published stomach contents analyses, indicating that stable isotope data may be used to estimate the trophic status of sharks.

A total of 89 Baillon's wrasse, Symphodus (Crenilabrus) bailloni, were collected during a trawl survey of the Solent (south coast of England) between 11 and 15 September 2002. Specimens ranged between 3 and 16 cm total length, with clear modes at 6 and 15 cm, and were found throughout the survey area. Symphodus bailloni is reported to be a Lusitanean species that is rare in the English Channel, but was the most common species of wrasse captured during this survey.

One juvenile specimen of the vadigo Campogramma glaycos was caught on 5 December 2000 in Piran Bay (northern Adriatic). This represents a northernmost extension in the known range of this species in the Adriatic Sea (and Mediterranean), and first record of a juvenile specimen in the Adriatic Sea.

The effect of thermal stress upon pattern development in Loligo forbesi was investigated. Levels of pattern disruption and pattern asymmetry were measured by examining the chromatophores of hatchlings reared at three constant temperatures (8, 12 and 16°C). Results indicate a strong positive correlation between thermal stress and disruption of embryonic chromatophore pattern. Asymmetry in chromatophore pattern occurs non-directionally and can therefore be described as fluctuating asymmetry.

The first records of thorny skate eggs in stomachs of sperm whales are described. Predation on elasmobranch eggs, especially by marine mammals, is reviewed.

This study reviewed published data on dietary preferences of beaked whales (Ziphiidae) from stomach contents analysis. Detailed data were only available for three of the six beaked whale genera (Hyperoodon, Mesoplodon and Ziphius). Stomach samples of these three beaked whale genera primarily contained cephalopod and fish remains, although some also contained crustaceans. Mesoplodon spp. were found to contain the most fish, with some species containing nothing but fish remains, while the southern bottlenose whale (Hyperoodon planifrons) and Cuvier's beaked whale (Ziphius cavirostris) rarely, if ever, contained fish. Of cephalopods identified, Histioteuthid, Gonatid, Cranchiid and Onychoteuthid species usually contributed most to prey numbers and biomass for all beaked whale genera. There was a wide range of species and families of cephalopods recorded from stomach contents, with no obvious preference for bioluminescent prey species, vertical migrating prey species or prey species with specific body compositions. Whales of the genus Mesoplodon generally contained smaller prey, such as cephalopods under 500 g in weight, compared with other beaked whales. Hyperoodon and Ziphius frequently contained much larger cephalopods with many important prey species having a mean weight of over 1000 g. This suggests that Mesoplodon occupies a separate dietary niche from Hyperoodon and Ziphius, which may be an example of niche segregation. In contrast, Hyperoodon and Ziphius appear to occupy very similar dietary niches but have geographically segregated distributions, with Hyperoodon occupying cold-temperate to polar waters and Ziphius occupying warm-temperate to tropical waters.

A model describing the positive correlation between variation in zooid size within bryozoan colonies and the amount of seasonal variation in temperature is tested in Panamanian encrusting bryozoans from contrasting seasonal regimes. Results reveal that in a natural setting the model provides accurate estimates of the level of seasonality experienced by the colonies.

From June 1995 to August 2002 we assessed green turtle (Chelonia mydas) population structure and survival, and identified human impacts at Bahía de los Angeles, a large bay that was once the site of the greatest sea turtle harvest rates in the Gulf of California, Mexico. Turtles were captured live with entanglement nets and mortality was quantified through stranding surveys and flipper tag recoveries. A total of 14,820 netting hours (617·5 d) resulted in 255 captures of 200 green turtles. Straight-carapace length and mass ranged from 46·0–100·0 cm (mean=74·3±0·7 cm) and 14·5–145·0 kg (mean=61·5±1·7 kg), respectively. The size–frequency distribution remained stable during all years and among all capture locations. Anthropogenic-derived injuries ranging from missing flippers to boat propeller scars were present in 4% of captured turtles. Remains of 18 turtles were found at dumpsites, nine stranded turtles were encountered in the study area, and flipper tags from seven turtles were recovered. Survival was estimated at 0·58 for juveniles and 0·97 for adults using a joint live-recapture and dead-recovery model (Burnham model). Low survival among juveniles, declining annual catch per unit effort, and the presence of butchered carcasses indicated human activities continue to impact green turtles at this foraging area.

The first documented record of the Indo-west Pacific pufferfish Arothron firmamentum was reported off Mar del Plata, Argentina at a depth of ∼45 m and is the first occurrence of the starry toadfish in American Atlantic waters. Some morphological and biological characteristics are given for the two specimens caught. Different explanations of how the two pufferfish specimens arrived in south Atlantic waters are discussed.

The stomach contents from a male sperm whale, Physeter macrocephalus, first located floating a short distance off the south coast of Crete were examined. The remains within the stomach consisted almost exclusively of cephalopod mandibles, or beaks, though other material was found including a piece of rigid plastic mesh. Of the beaks found, 1714 were upper beaks and 2178 were lower beaks, that were used to identify the species. A total of seven species was identified, all of which have been previously recorded in the eastern Mediterranean though are rarely caught by man. Of these Histioteuthis bonnellii was found to be the most important species in terms of both weight and numbers. Although it must be borne in mind that the whale may not have followed its normal feeding habits prior to its premature death, an important insight into its prey items can be revealed. This is the first documented account of the stomach contents of a sperm whale from the Mediterranean, and helps to complete a global record of sperm whale diets.

The morphology of burrows constructed by the eel goby Taenioides cirratus was studied using resin castings of burrows in situ as well as aquarium observations. Burrows had several openings, one of which was associated with a crateriform mound. The structure of the burrows consisted of the mound, gently sloping interconnected tunnels, and many short cul-de-sac side branches. The presence of the mound suggests that the fish actively process sediment.

A towed trawl simulator sledge (TTSS2) for collecting quantitatively small macrobenthic animals disturbed by the passage of otter trawl groundrope typical of the local fishery is described and illustrated. The TTSS2 was towed from a surface vessel at a speed within the range of commercial trawls, incorporating three sampling nets that open and close by means of an electro-mechanical system. An odometer in contact with the seabed provided a continuous record of the trawled ground. The degree of efficiency of the TTSS2—by means of the attached groundrope that stirs up the surface of the bottom ahead of the nets—was tested in the northern continental shelf of Crete (eastern Mediterranean). Additional trials with a much heavier groundrope were also performed. Analysis and comparison of TTSS2 samples with endobenthic, hyperbenthic and planktonic samples collected by means of conventional sampling gears indicate the presence of a well-defined and distinct fauna in the plume of resuspended sediment behind the groundrope.

Cryptic lineages were identified within a morphologically uniform group of sea stars distributed from Australia to Japan. Among eight populations, all of which have been referred to Patiriella pseudoexigua, we found seven unique mitochondrial DNA sequences clustered into four distinct lineages. These four lineages formed a monophyletic group in which sister clades were separated by small genetic distances but could be differentiated from each other on the basis of reproductive differences. The four lineages thus appear to be separate but very closely related species. Examination of reproduction in several Queensland populations revealed that one population (Statue Bay) consisted of hermaphroditic intragonadal brooders with live-born offspring while other populations (Townsville, Bowen, Airlie Beach) consisted of dioecious free-spawners with a planktonic larva. The brooded larvae from central Queensland populations closely resembled brooded embryos and larvae of a Japanese lineage, while the planktonic larvae from northern Queensland were similar to the original description of planktonic larvae from a Taiwan population. However, each of the viviparous lineages was more closely related to a lineage with planktonic larval development than the viviparous lineages were to each other. Patiriella pseudoexigua thus comprises at least four species with different reproductive phenotypes in which viviparous brooding appears to have evolved in parallel. Based on previous taxonomic work we propose the following names for these four lineages: the dioecious free-spawner from northern Queensland (including the P. pseudoexigua type locality) is P. pseudoexiguasensu stricto; the viviparous brooder from central Queensland is undescribed and here referred to as Patiriella sp. nov; the dioecious free-spawner from Taiwan is temporarily referred to as Patiriella sp. (a senior name for this species may be P. pentagonus); and the hermaphrodite brooder from Japan should be raised to specific status and referred to by the new combination P. pacifica.

Otoliths were obtained from Nezumia aequalis, a small macrourid that is widely distributed throughout the Atlantic and Mediterranean—two very different physical environments. Microchemical analysis of the otoliths was carried out using solution-based inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry of whole otoliths. Significant differences between fish populations were found for concentrations of the elements Li and Sr. Only 54% of the samples were correctly classified by area using discriminant analysis. Otolith samples from the Reykjanes Ridge were most easily distinguished. The results are discussed in relation to trace element concentrations in the waters of the north-eastern Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea.

The ability of the ophiuroid Amphiura filiformis to alert conspecifics to the presence of a predator was investigated. Our preliminary findings indicate that intraspecific communication of an alarm signal does not occur and that, ultimately, the motivation for altering behaviour in response to a stimulus is not oriented to the population as a whole

The ontogenetic changes in the diet and dietary overlap of three commercially important rajid species inhabiting the slope and shelf waters of the Falkland Islands were investigated. The white dotted skate (Bathyraja albomaculata) was a specialized amphipod and polychaete feeder. The broad nose skate (B. brachyurops) had a diverse diet, consuming a wide variety of crustaceans and fish. The grey tail skate (B. griseocauda) also had a broad diet but consumed a high proportion of amphipods and isopods (e.g. Serolis spp.). Larger individuals of the latter species were more piscivorous and consumed more squid. The diets of all three species showed a marked variation with ontogeny. Dietary overlap was greatest for smaller animals (<30 cm disk width), after which each species became more specialized in their diets. Smaller animals also showed some differences in depth of distribution, which may be an adaptation to reduce inter-specific competition.

A specimen of Arnoux's beaked whale was recorded from the coast of Brazil on 4 August 1993. The specimen was identified from the skeleton in 1994. Arnoux's beaked whales (Berardius arnuxii) are known to have a circumpolar distribution in the Southern Hemisphere, from the Antarctic continent and ice edge (78°S) north to about 35°S in the southern Pacific, southern Atlantic, and Indian Ocean. Few sighting and stranding records are known. Its distribution in deep and cold waters, mainly far from the coast and in higher latitudes, is probably the main reason preventing the collection of more information on the biology of this species. It is still considered as ‘insufficiently known’ by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources. Sighting records are more common in Antarctic waters, where some individuals sometimes become trapped in ice holes, and in the South Pacific. Strandings are relatively rare. About 30 strandings were reported around New Zealand, and single ones occurred in southern Australia, in South Africa, Argentina and the Falkland Islands. The majority of records occurred south of the latitude 40°S (Ross, 1984).
