Stomach contents of Todarodes sagittatus caught by trawlers working from 100 to 800 m depth in the Balearic Sea (western Mediterranean) were studied. From the 348 stomachs examined (153 males and 195 females) 33.62% were empty (39.21% in males and 29.74% in females). The diet of the squid was composed of 58 different prey items belonging to four major groups: Osteichthya, Crustacea, Cephalopoda and Chondrichthya. Osteichthyes, crustaceans and cephalopods were the most common prey, with a frequency of occurrence value of 84.85, 48.92 and 29.87% respectively. A change in the diet as the squid grows was observed, since juveniles feed basically on fishes while adults prey more actively on crustaceans. Analysis of the diet by size-classes reflected an ontogenetic migration to deeper waters since, parallel to the increase of size, a raise in the percentage of prey species inhabiting deeper waters was detected. Cannibalism was quite frequent, since T. sagittatus was the second most common cephalopod prey. Females had higher fullness-weight index and lower emptiness index than males, which reflects their major energetic demand for egg production.

In the summer of 1995 a massive kill of the dog-whelk, Nucella lapillus, occurred in Bude Bay on the north Cornish coast. High mortality was detectable along 12 km of shoreline. The only other intertidal species affected appeared to be another neogastropod, Ocenebra erinacea. The cause of the kill is unknown but the evidence suggests that it occurred in early July following an extended period of warm, calm weather in June. Possible causes of this event are discussed: algal toxicity may have been responsible since an algal bloom was detected offshore in July in the area. Laboratory experiments exposing gastropods to different species and concentrations of microalgae, designed to test whether N. lapillus is more sensitive than Monodonta lineata and Littorina littorea, gave inconclusive results. No comparable kill has occurred in the Bude area for at least 20 y, but it is suggested that nutrients from a newly-constructed, offshore sewage outfall may now stimulate local algal bloom development during calm weather periods.

The great scallop Pecten maximus (Bivalvia: Pectinidae) supports a substantial European fishery with a recent history of declining catches caused by over-exploitation. The sustainable exploitation of shellfish populations requires knowledge of the extent to which commercial grounds are reproductively self-sustaining or supplied with larvae originating from further afield. The degree of genetic differentiation between locations can provide important indirect evidence, reflecting the pattern and scale of effective larval dispersal. Pecten maximus were sampled from five locations around the Isle of Man, from Mulroy Bay (Ireland) and from Plymouth. Restriction-site variation was investigated in two PCR-amplified mitochondrial DNA fragments of 2 and 3 kb, respectively. Haplotype and nucleotide diversity within populations, and nucleotide divergence between populations, were calculated. Mean nucleotide sequence divergence was corrected for within-population polymorphisms and visualized by UPGMA cluster diagrams. Molecular analysis of variance (AMOVA) was carried out. Results showed low levels of population differentiation. Slight but significant differentiation between Isle of Man populations was revealed, with East Douglas appearing distinct from the remaining Manx locations. The analyses also indicated the distinction of Mulroy Bay from the other populations, and the lowest genetic variability was recorded from this enclosed habitat. This probably reflects the relative isolation of Mulroy Bay, whereas dynamic hydrographic conditions in the Irish Sea and the Channel may generally ensure extensive mixing of the planktonic larvae.

Dirivultus spinigulatus sp. nov. (Copepoda: Siphonostomatoida) is described from vestimentiferans at a deep-water hydrothermal site near Lihir Island in the South Pacific. The species is characterized by several features: sexual dimorphism in the second segment of the antennule, the rostrum with lateral spines, the oral cone with four conspicuous spines, the mandible without palp, the maxilla without an axillary seta, the endopod of leg 1 with segments 1 and 2 partly fused, and leg 5 in the female represented by a conspicuous ventrally located spine but in the male by a free segment having setae. A key is included to the 11 genera of the family Dirivultidae, whose members are endemic to hydrothermal vents and cold seeps.

This study investigated factors affecting the metabolic rate of Cancer pagurus eggs. The oxygen uptake of portions of the egg mass and recently hatched zoeae was measured. Oxygen uptake of the eggs of an individual animal was found to vary widely, with measured mean values under normoxic conditions ranging from 38 to 250 μmoles O2 kg−1 min−1. Mean values for the oxygen uptake of zoeae ranged from 958 to 1168 μmoles O2 kg−1 min−1. Mean rates of oxygen uptake of the eggs generally increased with increasing seasonal temperature and advancing developmental stage. Rates of oxygen uptake were maintained over a wide range of ambient oxygen partial pressures. As oxygen partial pressure in the seawater surrounding the eggs fell from a critical value (Pc) of between 60 and 90 mm Hg, the oxygen uptake of the eggs also declined. Mean values for ambient oxygen partial pressures within the egg mass in vivo ranged from 34 to 98 mm Hg. Adult female C. pagurus appear to be able to detect conditions within the egg mass and adjust their egg ventilation behaviour accordingly. Active egg mass ventilation by the adult increased as the eggs became more developed and their oxygen demands increased.

An allozyme analysis on three species of Mediterranean Veneridae (Mollusca: Bivalvia): Callista chione (subfamily Pitarinae), Venus verrucosa (Venerinae) and Chamelea gallina (Chioninae) is presented. The results were compared with the previously obtained allozyme data on Tapes philippinarum, T. decussatus, Venerupis aurea and Paphia undulata (all pertaining to the subfamily Tapetinae). The newly analysed species showed remarkable departures from the Hardy–Weinberg proportions, as commonly observed in several populations of Bivalvia. The present analysis revealed a high level of relationship between C. gallina and Venus verrucosa and suggested that the genus Tapes, as presently defined, should be regarded as an unnatural taxon. The allozyme results are consistent with mitochondrial 16s ribosomal DNA and satellite DNAs analyses on the same species, with the only exception of Callista chione which seems to be basal to (UPGMA method) or even included (Neighbor-Joining method) in the Tapetinae cluster.

Age and growth of Loligo vulgaris and L. forbesi were studied by the examination of growth increments in 96 and 135 selected (white zone <10%) statoliths, respectively. Squid were obtained by monthly sampling from the catches of commercial trawling and hand-jigs in Galician waters (north-west Spain) between February 1991 and October 1993. Mantle length (ML) of L. vulgaris ranged from 70 to 480 mm and varied between 70 and 685 mm in L. forbesi. A negative allometry between statolith length and ML or body weight (BW) was found in both species. Sexual dimorphism was apparent in both species, males grew faster and longer than females. The statolith analysis suggests that growth patterns of L. vulgaris and L. forbesi in Galician waters are different. The exploited population of L. vulgaris was composed of two groups: one formed by individuals hatched in winter–spring and another by specimens hatched in summer–autumn. Squid hatched in winter–spring reached larger sizes at the same age than those hatched in summer–autumn. These two groups were also observed in L. forbesi. However, squid of this species hatched in winter–spring were smaller than those hatched in summer–autumn at the same age. Reasons for this discrepancy are discussed. The life span of L. vulgaris was about one year whereas the life span of L. forbesi extended to 18 months.

Geographical differences in the shell growth rate of several populations of the bivalve Arctica islandica (Mollusca: Bivalvia) were estimated by using the growth lines laid down during their first ten years of life. Attention was focused on populations from the North Sea, but for comparison small samples from adjacent waters were also analysed. A four-fold difference in the average growth rate was found between the slowest and fastest growing shells.

Principal component analysis was used to summarize the inter-relationships between environmental variables and growth rates. Shell growth correlated positively with primary production and temperature and inversely with depth and the silt content of the sediment. The North Sea specimens were found to have a strong positive correlation with grain size. Since sediment characteristics also depend on bottom currents, it is suggested that these increased rates reflect lateral seston flux as additional food supply.

In a multiple regression model, applied to all available data, average annual temperature, primary production and the interaction between production and water depth explained 50% of the variance. The derived standard coefficients for temperature, primary production and the interaction between depth and primary production were 0.90, 0.47 and −0.92 respectively. The results of this study suggest that the temperature effects on in situ shell growth are easily overruled by other environmental factors.

If a similar model was calculated with North Sea data only, 75% of the variance was explained by temperature, primary production and depth×primary production. The standard coefficient for primary production was 1.26. The role of temperature in explaining the observed growth differences is negligible since the standard coefficient is −0.098. The interaction term, depth×primary production had a standard coefficient of −0.95.

The mantle muscle tissue of cuttlefish is predominantly made up of circular muscle fibres which run around the body. This circular muscle tissue is divided into discrete blocks by radial fibres, which run perpendicular to the main axis of the body. Growth of mantle muscle tissue was described in the tropical cuttlefish Sepia elliptica by examining muscle block size and the density and size distribution of muscle fibres. Changes in these variables were assessed in juvenile and adult cuttlefish. Generation of new muscle fibres, both within new and existing muscle blocks, occurred as animals grew across the size range. Anterior muscle blocks were smaller than muscle blocks in the middle and posterior regions of the mantle, suggesting that new blocks were generated anteriorly. Muscle blocks were also created in the middle and posterior regions by division of existing large blocks into small blocks by generation of circular and radial muscle fibres. The examination of cuttlefish muscle growth dynamics provided an alternative way of assessing cephalopod growth mechanisms.

The new species Eugerda gigantea sp. nov. is described from the abyssal of the equatorial eastern South Pacific. For the genus Eugerda this is the first record from the South Pacific ocean, the other known species of the genus occur in the northern hemisphere or the equatorial Atlantic ocean.

Loligo vulgaris (Cephalopoda: Loliginidae) is a commercially important species in the cephalopod trawl fishery in the Saharan Bank (21–26°N). This study on squid in central-east Atlantic waters aims to examine some important aspects of its reproductive biology. In the period from May 1993 to April 1994 monthly samples of L. vulgaris were collected from this commercial trawl fishery. The maturation pattern for males and females was described from the proportion of immature, maturing and mature animals in the samples and using a maturation index. A range of reproductive indices derived from the morphometrics of the somatic and reproductive systems were also estimated to provide comparative information. The proportion and an abundance index of mature and immature animals in commercial landings in the period 1983–1994 were calculated to provide comparative results of maturity and recruitment respectively. Peaks of mature animals were mainly seen between November and January. The summer months exhibited the maximum recruit abundance. Age determinations were also undertaken in order to obtain the hatching peaks and to complete the proposed life cycle of L. vulgaris on the Saharan Bank. A main hatching peak was observed in spring, particularly in May. The age–size relationship suggests differences related to sex and possibly to hatching season. The wide range of size at maturity observed in male L. vulgaris is analysed and discussed. Males showed a seasonal pattern in size at maturity. The dorsal mantle length–body weight relationship and the sex ratio were determined. The sex ratio exhibits a seasonal pattern in relation to body size. Results are compared with information on this species from European waters.

When offered a choice between open water and a ‘vegetated’ area of an aquarium (artificial sea grass), mysid (Paramesopodopsis rufa) swarms always selected open water. In contrast, juvenile and adult sea horses, Hippocampus abdominalis, which feed by ambush predation, always selected vegetated areas even when their mysid prey occurred in the adjacent clear water. Lunging predators, Australian salmon (Arripis trutta), always preferred open water to vegetated regions of the tank. Increasing vegetation density, i.e. from low to medium habitat complexity had a positive effect on capture success of juvenile and adult sea horses feeding on mysid swarms. However, number of attacks by juvenile sea horses, but not adults, was significantly reduced in higher density vegetation. Number of attacks by Australian salmon decreased as vegetation density increased but capture success, nonetheless, increased. Density of vegetation did not significantly affect the number of unsuccessful attacks by adult sea horses. Whereas proportion of unsuccessful attacks increased with vegetation density for juvenile sea horses, it decreased for juvenile salmon. This result is thought to be due to the fact that high vegetation densities disrupt structure of the prey swarm, itself a defensive formation, leaving a large number of more vulnerable small groups. Cohesive escape responses of a large swarm are likely to be a more effective defence against a lunging predator than against an ambush predator whose strategy is to use stealth to avoid provoking escape responses. Dense vegetation will militate against this strategy.

The sea urchin egg has proved a reliable and robust system for measuring intracellular calcium release in response to three independent mechanisms: inositol 1,4,5 trisphosphate, cyclic ADP-ribose and the recently identified molecule, nicotinic acid adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NAADP). These calcium release mechanisms have been studied in homogenates of Lytechinus pictus and Spongylocentrotus purpuratus, which are two sea urchin species located off the west coast of the USA. A new calcium-release model from a species of sea urchin present off the coasts of Britain, Psammechinus miliaris is characterized and described. Although the Ca2+-release characteristics in this species do not differ from those of the other two sea urchin species, it may provide a more economical and convenient model for European scientists.

Many coral reef fish are assumed to be conspicuous in their natural environment due to their bold and distinct colour patterns. However there have been few attempts to quantify the conspicuousness of coral reef fish under natural photic conditions. In this study, the effects of incident light and background conditions on the potential conspicuousness of four species of Hawaiian reef fish (Chaetodon auriga, Labroides phthirophagus, Thalassoma duperrey, Zebrasoma flavescens) were examined. The optical properties of water, coral and fish colour patterns were measured with an underwater spectroradiometer. Potential conspicuousness was quantified by calculating luminance (brightness) contrast and spectral (colour) contrast within fish colour patterns, and between patterns and natural backgrounds, i.e. water and coral. Under different illuminating and background conditions, the contrast from these fishes was highly variable. Different incident light conditions resulted in significant differences in inherent spectral contrast for L. phthirophagus. All fish had significantly different luminance contrast when the optical properties of the water backgrounds varied. Against coral backgrounds, T. duperrey and Z. flavescens had significantly different luminance contrast and L. phthirophagus and T. duperrey had significantly different spectral contrast. These results have important implications for theories on the adaptive significance of reef fish coloration since the conspicuousness of reef fish appears to be highly dependant on local photic conditions and therefore, some colour patterns may not be conspicuous in the wild as is often presumed.

Since the late 19th century, the accidentally introduced Gastropoda Crepidula fornicata has been invading sheltered coastal waters of western Europe. The consequences of this proliferation on macrozoobenthic communities were studied in the Bay of Marennes-Oléron, France. Crepidula fornicata was found in a wide range of sediment grain sizes and depths, with however, a predilection for shallow muddy areas where abundance and biomass reached 4770 ind m−2 and 354 g DW m−2, respectively. Soft-sediment macrofaunal assemblages were compared in similar habitats, in the presence and absence of C. fornicata. In muddy and medium sand areas, abundance, biomass and species richness of macrofauna were generally greater in presence of C. fornicata, with Annelida dominating, although the differences were significant (P<0.05) only in one location out of five. The species composition was moderately different in the presence of C. fornicata. In coarse sand, the abundance of C. fornicata was low and did not affect abundance, biomass and species richness of the macrofauna. However, species composition differed where C. fornicata was absent, with a higher proportion of mobile Crustaceana. The effect of C. fornicata on benthic communities differs in relation to the habitat they colonize: in muddy sediments, the presence of C. fornicata apparently stimulates zoobenthic community diversity and abundance (mostly deposit-feeders), whereas in coarser sediments, macrofauna community is different (more suspension-feeders) from the community associated with C. fornicata.

The data presented here demonstrate that the sea cucumber Cucumaria frondosa secretes a biologically active mucus that helps maintain gametogenic synchrony among conspecifics. Either a whole mature individual or a sample of its freshly collected mucus was able to initiate gametogenesis in conspecifics that were in the gametogenic recovery stage when other environmental conditions, including daylength, were maintained constant. Similar results were obtained when the mucus was kept in seawater for less than 3 h prior to its use, whereas after 6 h in seawater, the mucus had lost its inducing properties. Laboratory experiments showed that the mucus was produced in lesser amount during late summer and autumn; the production rapidly increased in early January to reach a peak a few months before the June spawning, in 1992 and 1993. The increment of mucus production was concurrent with the initiation of gametogenesis. Synthesis of mucus was maximal in individuals having attained gametogenic maturity and minimum in individuals with less developed gonads. At first relatively stable in seawater, the mucus gradually lost its integrity within a period of 3–5 h, suggesting that the mucus may be carried over long distances by currents, thus allowing a transfer of information before its complete degradation. This phenomenon was observed in the field where streams of mucus could be followed by SCUBA divers as far as 20–30 m away from the secreting animal. The data presented here are the first evidence of the important role played by mucus secretion during the gametogenic processes of an echinoderm.

Three species of cheilostomate Bryozoa are described, and illustrated by scanning electron micrographs. One was previously poorly characterized and is here stabilized by the selection of a neotype; a second is recognized as distinct from an Arctic congener while the third is entirely new to science and represents the first record of the genus Codonellina from the north-east Atlantic.

Early (post)larval fish constitute a significant part of the temporary hyperbenthos, i.e. of the fauna living in the lower reaches of the water column close to the substratum. Information on the densities and spatial and temporal variations of these stages, as well as on their lengths at the moment of occurrence, can be an important contribution to the knowledge of their dispersion, migrations and to the identification of possible bottlenecks in their recruitment. Therefore the hyperbenthos of the Voordelta, a shallow coastal zone in front of the Dutch Delta, as well as that of the subtidal channels and the intertidal brackish marsh creeks of the Westerschelde Estuary, was sampled monthly during one year by means of a sledge and a stow net. A total of 37 taxa were recorded from 410 samples. Densities often exceeded 400 ind 1000 m−2 in the Voordelta and 300 ind 1000 m−2 in the Westerschelde, including the tidal marshes of Waarde and Saeftinghe. The dominant taxa were clupeid larvae (predominantly herring Clupea harengus and sprat Sprattus sprattus), Pomatoschistus spp. (a mixture of sand goby P. minutus and Lozano's goby P. lozanoi), common goby Pomatoschistus microps, Syngnathus spp. (probably almost exclusively Nilsson's pipefish S.rostellatus), plaice Pleuronectes platessa, sole Solea solea and flounder Pleuronectes flesus. Most species were found at a larger size in the Westerschelde (and in the tidal marshes) suggesting migration from the shallow coastal area into the estuary. Several species utilize the tidal marshes in the brackish reaches of the Westerschelde. The nursery value of these areas however, is restricted to specific early life history stages of a few species, especially flounder, bass Dicentrarchus labrax and the common goby. The estuary itself seems to function as a nursery for other species like sole and plaice. The hyperbenthic sledge was found to sample specific life history stages of postlarval flatfish (early settlement stages at the onset of asymmetry), which are not easy to sample with other types of sampling gear.

Changes in the reproductive strategy of Sphaerechinus granularis (Echinodermata: Echinoidea) according to food availability were examined by comparing gonadal index changes from two populations with different food conditions. The better nutritional situation was confirmed by a repletion index always higher without significant inverse relationships with the gonadal index. The two populations exhibited a different reproductive strategy during their life cycle. The food limited population showed a delay in reproductive competence, a lower gonadal index and an increase in relative gonadal growth with age. This population showed a seasonal inverse relationship between the consumption index and the gonadal index during the spawning period. A discussion based on the variations in the main life history parameters between the two populations: reproduction, somatic growth, longevity, underlines the plasticity of this species which must maximize its reproductive output in terms of changes in food availability. The adaptive value of this plasticity was observed by the reduction in somatic growth which decreases the energetic cost of maintenance and by the increase in size of the feeding structure (Aristotle's lantern) which improves food acquisition.

In March 1997 one male and one female brown wrasse Labrus merula spawned spontaneously in aquaria conditions. Eggs were incubated at ambient temperature, salinity, oxygen and pH. The development of the eggs, yolk-sac larvae and larvae is described and illustrated with particular emphasis on features of practical value for identification of specimens from plankton. The ripe egg of brown wrasse is a typical labrid egg with a mean diameter of 0.93±0.05 mm. The incubation period was 106 h 45 min at a mean temperature of 14.3°C. Newly hatched yolk-sac larvae were 3.8±0.02 mm, while the yolk-sac was resorbed when larvae reached 4.68±0.15 mm in total length. Some characteristics which may be useful for identification are described and compared with some other labrid yolk-sac larvae and larvae. The length of newly hatched yolk-sac larvae of brown wrasse was significantly larger (t-test, P<0.05) than those of the other labrid species, but it is similar to that of Labrus bergylta. During the first 16 d (after resorption of yolk-sac) brown wrasse larvae does not possess a double crescent of melanophores on top of the head, but has a few melanophores on the anal fin which is very similar to the pigmentation of Symphodus (Crenilabrus) melops larvae, although there is a difference in length between them. Larvae older than 16 d have a double crescent of melanophores on the top of the head with melanophores on the anal fin-fold identical to L. bergylta larvae, but the difference in larvae length also exists.
