This paper deals with tip leakage flow structure in subsonic axial compressor rotor blades row under different operating conditions. Analyses are based on flow simulation utilizing computational fluid dynamic technique. Three different circumstances at near stall condition are considered in this respect. Tip leakage flow frequency spectrum was studied through surveying instantaneous static pressure signals imposed on blades surfaces. Results at the highest flow rate, close to the stall condition, showed that the tip vortex flow fluctuates with a frequency close to the blade passing frequency. In addition, pressure signals remained unchanged with time. Moreover, equal pressure fluctuations at different passages guaranteed no peripheral disturbances. Tip leakage flow frequency decreased with reduction of the mass flow rate and its structure was changing with time. Spillage of the tip leakage flow from the blade leading edge occurred without any backflow in the trailing edge region. Consequently, various flow structures were observed within every passage between two adjacent blades. Further decrease in the mass flow rate provided conditions where the spilled flow ahead of the blade leading edge together with trailing edge backflow caused spike stall to occur. This latter phenomenon was accompanied by lower frequencies and higher amplitudes of the pressure signals. Further revolution of the rotor blade row caused the spike stall to eventuate to larger stall cells, which may be led to fully developed rotating stall.

The influences of acoustic excitation on the velocity field and mixing characteristic of a jet in cross-flow were investigated in a wind tunnel. The acoustic excitation waves at resonance Strouhal number were generated by a loudspeaker. The time-averaged velocity field and streamlines of the excited elevated transverse jet in the symmetry plane were measured by a high-speed particle image velocimetry. The visual penetration height and spread width were obtained by using an image processing technique. The dispersion characteristics were obtained from the tracer-gas concentration measurement. The results showed that the streamline pattern of the non-excited transverse jet was significantly modified by the acoustic excitation—the bent streamlines evolved from the jet exit escalated and the vortex rings in the jet and tube wakes and the recirculation bubble in the jet wake disappeared. The time-averaged velocity distributions revealed that the excited transverse jet produces large momentum in the up-shooting direction so that the velocity trajectories were located at levels higher than those of the non-excited one. The mixing characteristics, which include the visual penetration height, spread width, and dispersion, were drastically improved by the acoustic excitation due to the changes in the flow structures. The excited transverse jet characterized at larger jet-to-crossflow momentum flux ratios presented larger improvement in the mixing characteristics than at lower jet-to-crossflow momentum flux ratios.

Even though electro-magnetic wave can be calculated from Maxwell's equations, the cause of electro-magnetic waves has not been fully understood. This paper proposes a Newton's laws of motion based aether theory to derive identical results as those from Maxwell's equations for free field. The authors suggest that every aether particle has a mass and occupies a volume in space. Every aether particle has translational movement and particle spin movement. The translational movement is similar to the gas particle moving in the air and it does not produce an electro-magnetic wave. The particle spin movement generates shear and a spin wave that will be shown to have the same results as Maxwell's equations. Detailed derivation of electro-magnetic wave solutions from the proposed aether theory and Maxwell's equations is presented in this paper to show the validation of this model.

Exact analysis of displacements and stresses in 2-D orthotopic laminates under extension is conducted. On the basis of the Hamiltonian state space approach and the transfer matrix method, a complete solution, in the context of generalized strain, which exactly satisfies the state space equation, the traction-free BC on the top and bottom surfaces of the rectangular section, the interfacial continuity conditions in multi-layered laminates, and the end conditions on free edges, is obtained by combing the eigensolutions and the particular solution. Evaluating of the stresses in the boundary layer for verification shows that the stress decay in laminates under uniform extension may be slow and the edge effects may be pronounced.

The effect of space and temperature dependent heat generation/absorption on an unsteady laminar boundary layer flow of viscous, incompressible, radiating and electrically conducting fluid over a vertical stretching permeable surface is investigated numerically in the presence of applied magnetic field and buoyancy force. By applying similarity analysis, the governing partial differential equations are transformed into a set of non-linear coupled ordinary differential equations and they are solved by Runge-Kutta-Fehlberg method along with shooting technique. The numerical values obtained within the boundary layer for the dimensionless velocity, temperature, skin friction coefficient and heat transfer rate are presented through graphs and tables for several set of values of governing parameters.

This study presents the fluid temperature measurement at a 90-degree sharp bend inside a microchannel using molecule-based temperature sensor technique. This technique provides both detailed and global information for temperature investigation in microfluidic research. Rhodamine B was selected as the molecule-based temperature probe in the experiment to provide non-invasive and straightforward measurements. To resolve the luminescence deviation in the microscale temperature measurements introduced by the corner structure, in-situ calibration method and pixel-by-pixel correction were applied during the data reduction. The temperature measurement was performed in a 200μm wide, 67μm deep and 2cm long PDMS microchannel with a 90-degree sharp bend at the center. The temperature profile was measured at a Reynolds number of 27.66 using Rhodamine B in DI water while the bottom of channel was heated at 50°C. As revealed by the molecule-based temperature sensor, the temperature variation along the central line increased 2°C while passing the corner. Additionally, the lateral temperature distributions upstream of the corner show the temperature increase near the outer side of microchannel and decreased near the inner side. The velocity profiles around the 90-degree sharp bend were acquired to analyze the flow after corner. Secondary flow structure after the corner was observed in the velocity profiles along the depth of the microchannel. This study analyzes the thermal flow fields in the microchannel with a 90-degree sharp bend and reveals that regardless of the low Reynolds number, the flow mixing after the corner resulted in the increase of temperature downstream of the bend.

Even though the universal gravity force has been formulated and used for more than three hundred years, the cause of the universal gravity force has not been fully understood. This paper proposes a substantial aether model to derive universal gravity force based on Newton's laws of motion and Bernoulli's equation. The authors suggest that every aether particle has a mass and occupies a volume in space. Every aether particle has translational movement and particle spin movement. The particle spin movement does not produce the universal gravity force. The translational movement is similar to the gas particle moving in the air and produces aether pressure. The difference of aether pressure generates an aether flow velocity. The difference of aether flow velocities creates a pressure difference according to Bernoulli's equation. The summation of aether pressure difference around an object is shown to be the universal gravity force. A detailed derivation of universal gravity force from the proposed substantial aether model is presented in this paper to show the validation of this model.

The nonlinear characteristics of a simply-supported three-layer circular piezoelectric plate-like power harvester near resonance are examined in the paper, where the energy-scavenging structure consists of two properly poled piezoceramic layers separated by a central metallic layer. The structure is subjected to a uniform harmonic pressure on the upper surface. Nonlinear effects of large deflection near resonance to induce the incidental in-plane extension are considered. Results on output powers are presented, which exhibit multi-valuedness and jump phenomena.

Micro milling operation is a fabrication process to create 3D parts from tens of micrometers to a few millimeters in size using a tool with diameter less than 1mm. Micro groove is one of the common features observed in the micro parts. The surface roughness of micro grooves plays an important role in their performance. Since most of the finishing processes could not be easily performed on the micro grooves, it is of extreme importance to find a relationship between micro milling parameters and the surface roughness profile. In this paper, in order to anticipate the profile and surface roughness of the groove floor a model is proposed based on the kinematic of cutting process and tool geometry. The effects of minimum chip thickness, elastic recovery, size effect and tool deflection are included in the model. Relationship between position of points on the floor surface of groove and kinematics of cutting process are derived. In next step, simulations of proposed model are performed in the ACIS environment. Finally, using the DOE method surface roughness is investigated stochastically. The simulated and measured surface roughnesses are compared together that confirm the validity of proposed model.

Of concern in this paper is a problem motivated towards studying the influence of slip velocity on heat and mass transfer in the unsteady flow of blood through a porous vessel, when the lumen of the vessel has turned into a porous structure with internal heat generation or absorption in the presence of chemical reaction. It is assumed that the influence of a uniform magnetic field acts normal to the flow and the permeability of the porous medium fluctuates with time. The suction velocity is also taken to be oscillates periodically. The problem is solved numerically by using Crank-Nicolson scheme. The computational results are presented graphically for the velocity, temperature and concentration distribution as well as the variation of skin-friction co-efficient, Nusselt number and Sherwood number for various values of the parameters involved in this analysis. The study reveals that the flow is appreciably influenced by the presence of a magnetic field and slip velocity.

The effects of boundary slip on the stability of finite miscible/immiscible liquid-liquid stratified microchannel flow were investigated. In this approach, the boundary slip was considered by Navier slip assumption and the finite-miscible liquid-liquid interface was modeled by double film model. The stability of the flow was studied by the small disturbance theory. The results indicated that the effects of boundary slip on the instability of finite miscible stratified microchannel flow with different viscosity ratio, interface location and the property of interface (i.e. thickness and viscosity distribution of mixed layer) are distinct and complex. The effect intensity of upper and lower boundary slip on flow stability is determined by viscosity ratio, interface structure (different Ns) and film thickness. When the interface changes from the channel center to the wall, the critical Re number is enhanced by boundary slip and especially markedly near the critical line and after across the critical line it suddenly decreases to a small value (even to 424). The flow stability always increased by boundary slip.
