Classical sliding theories consider ice sliding over obstacles which are much shorter than the thickness of overlying ice. Here we present a theory which considers “form drag” generated under ice streams by large obstacles such as subglacial bedforms, which may have lengths comparable to ice thickness. We also investigate how perturbations at the surface of an ice stream can be generated by such bedforms, and develop a mathematical framework for separating the effects of such local (kilometre-scale) variations in ice flow from the bulk flow of the ice stream.

The Menzies Range in the southern Prince Charles Mountains, Antarctica, records at least four intervals of Cenozoic terrestrial glacigene sedimentation, and two periods of glacial erosion. The oldest Cenozoic strata, here named the Pardoe Formation, are >240 m thick, and consist of variable diamicts with subordinate sandstones and minor laminated lacustrine siltstones. The Pardoe Formation overlies a rugged erosion surface cut into Precambrian basement. Two subsequent Cenozoic sequences are here named informally the Trail diamicts and the younger Amphitheatre diamicts. The latter infilled the lower regions of an extremely rugged erosion surface, many components of which still dominate the present topography. The palaeodrainage of this erosion surface is markedly discordant with that of the older erosion surface underlying the Pardoe Formation. These three depositional events and the two associated erosion surfaces record warmer climates and increased snow accumulation under conditions of temperate wet-based glaciation. During the excavation of the sub-Amphitheatre diamict erosion surface, the East Antarctic ice sheet was either absent, further inland or the height of its surface relative to the Menzies Range was considerably lower than at present. The fourth and youngest depositional episode, recorded by a veneer of boulder gravel distributed along the northern flank of the Menzies Range, is from dry-based glacier ice, and assumed to be <2.6 Myr.

A 28 year record of lower Pine Island Glacier, West Antarctica, constructed from 15 Landsat images, shows changes at the terminus, grounding zone and both margins. The north margin has expanded 5 km into the adjacent ice shelf in a sustained event that was underway in 1973 and may have begun in 1957. Between 1991 and 1997, this expansion ceased and a new region of rifting was created associated with an ice rise on the glacier’s floating tongue. Changes in the topography of a nearby ice rise are used to deduce an upper-bound estimate of a 134 m thinning of the adjacent ice shelf. On the south margin, widening was limited to 1 km over the observation period and is seen propagating downstream in an intermediate-dated image. New areas of crevassing are also evident in the grounding zone of the glacier. Ice loss by the calving of large tabular bergs vastly exceeds mass loss by calving of many small bergs. These observations are consistent with reported changes of the 1990s and indicate that changes in the flow of Pine Island Glacier have occurred over the full period of satellite observations.

Avertical numerical model has been developed that simulates tank experiments of sediment entrainment into sea ice. Physical processes considered were: turbulent vertical diffusion of heat, salt, sediment, frazil ice and their aggregates; differential growth of frazil-ice crystals; secondary nucleation of crystals; and aggregation between sediment and ice. The model approximated the real size distribution of frazil ice and sediment using five classes of each. Frazil crystals (25 μm to 1.5 cm) were modelled as discs with a constant thickness of their diameter. Each class had a constant rise velocity based on the density of ice and drag forces. Sediment grains (1–600 μm) were modelled as constant density spheres, with corresponding sinking velocities. The vertical diffusion was set constant for experiments based on calculated turbulent rms velocities and dissipation rates from current data. The balance between the rise/sinking velocities and the constant vertical diffusion is an important feature of the model. The efficiency of the modeled entrainment process was estimated through α, an aggregation factor. Values for α are in the range 〈0.0003, 0.1〉, but average values are often close to 0.01. Entrainment increases with increasing sediment concentration and turbulence of the water, and heat flux to the air.

During the 1999–2000 Italian Expedition, an airborne radar survey was performed along 12 transects across Lake Vostok, Antarctica, and its western and eastern margins. Ice thickness, subglacial elevation and the precise location of lake boundaries were determined. Radar data confirm the geometry derived from previous surveys, but with some slight differences. We measured a length of up to 260 km, a maximum width of 81 km and an area of roughly 14 000 km2. Along the major axis, from north to south, the ice thickness varies from 3800 to 4250 m, with a decreasing gradient. From west to east the ice thickness is fairly constant, except for two narrow strips located on the western and eastern margins, where it increases with high thickening rate. Over the lake the surface elevation increases from 3476 m a.s.l. (south) to 3525 (north), with a decreasing gradient, while the lake surface elevation decreases from −315 to −750 m a.s.l., with a decreasing gradient (absolute value). The ice-surface and lake-ceiling slopes suggest that the lake is in a state of hydrostatic equilibrium.

We present a comparison of surface velocities in 1996, derived from interferometric synthetic aperture radar, with an estimate of the long-term, depth-averaged velocity based on the assumption of steady-state flow for both Pine Island Glacier and its neighbour, Thwaites Glacier, West Antarctica. The results show that the former was close to balance conditions in 1996 (within 9%). The ice flux and velocity of the latter is significantly different in magnitude and distribution from that required to maintain the basin in a state of mass balance over the long term. The balance flux was found to be 32 ± 19% less than the measured outgoing flux. We conclude that the mass imbalance and dramatic difference in the pattern of flow is most likely due to a substantial change in the flow regime of Thwaites Glacier in the recent past.

A 50 MHz ground-penetrating radar was used to detect horizontal layers in the snowpack along a longitudinal profile on Nordenskjöldbreen, a Svalbard glacier. The profile passed two shallow and one deep ice-core sites. Two internal radar reflection layers were dated using parameters measured in the deep core. Radar travel times were converted to water equivalent, yielding snow-accumulation rates along the profile for three time periods: 1986–99, 1963–99 and 1963–86. The results show 40–60% spatial variability in snow accumulation over short distances along the profile. The average annual accumulation rate for 1986–99 was found to be about 12% higher than for the period 1963–86, which indicates increased accumulation in the late 1980s and 1990s.

Meteorological and snow-temperature data from midtre Lovénbreen, Spitsbergen, Svalbard, indicate two distinct annual phases of rapid snowpack warming and superimposed-ice formation in 1998/99. Short periods of positive air temperatures in early winter, lasting up to 36 hours and often coinciding with rainfall, caused rapid glacier-wide melting. Percolating water froze to form superimposed ice on the lower half of the glacier, and wetted–refrozen snow and ice lenses at higher altitudes. The second period of superimposed-ice formation commenced in May/June 1999 and continued for 5 weeks at low altitudes and throughout the summer at high altitudes. These observations at midtre Lovénbreen are typical of Spitsbergen glaciers and reflect the unique climatology of the region. They contrast with those from glaciers in more continental climatic settings where superimposed-ice formation is confined to a single period during summer. There are significant implications for glacier mass balance, with superimposed ice locally comprising up to 20% of winter balances and accounting for ∼16–25% of the annual accumulation. Since projected climatic warming is greatest during the winter months in Arctic regions, superimposed ice may become an increasingly important component of the winter, and potentially the net, balance of Spitsbergen glaciers.

We use a finite-element model of coupled ice-stream/ice-shelf flow to study the sensitivity of Pine Island Glacier, West Antarctica, to changes in ice-shelf and basal conditions. By tuning a softening coefficient of the ice along the glacier margins, and a basal friction coefficient controlling the distribution of basal shear stress underneath the ice stream, we are able to match model velocity to that observed with interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR). We use the model to investigate the effect of small perturbations on ice flow. We find that a 5.5–13% reduction in our initial ice-shelf area increases the glacier velocity by 3.5–10% at the grounding line. The removal of the entire ice shelf increases the grounding-line velocity by > 70%. The changes in velocity associated with ice-shelf reduction are felt several tens of km inland. Alternatively, a 5% reduction in basal shear stress increases the glacier velocity by 13% at the grounding line. By contrast, softening of the glacier side margins would have to be increased a lot more to produce a comparable change in ice velocity. Hence, both the ice-shelf buttressing and the basal shear stress contribute significant resistance to the flow of Pine Island Glacier.

We present a two-dimensional, coupled, mesoscale atmosphere–sea-ice model, and apply it to simulate the air–ice interaction during warm-air advection. The model was run into a steady state under various conditions with respect to the season, cloud cover and wind speed. The spatial and temporal evolution of the thermodynamics of the ice, snow and the atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) were investigated. The development of the stably stratified ABL downwind of the ice edge depended above all on the wind speed and cloud cover. If the turbulent heat flux from air to snow was large enough to compensate the radiative cooling of the surface, a downward conductive heat flux was generated in the upper ice and snow layers. The stronger was the surface heating (strong wind, overcast skies) and the shorter its duration (on a scale down to a few hours), the wider was the region where this downward flux occurred. From the point of view of ABL modelling, the interactive coupling between air and ice was most important when the wind was strong, while from the point of view of ice thermodynamic modelling the coupling was most important when the wind was weak.

The interaction between ice sheets and the rest of the climate system at long time-scales is not well understood, and studies of the ice ages typically employ simplified parameterizations of the climate forcing on an ice sheet. It is important therefore to understand how an ice sheet responds to climate forcing, and whether the reduced approaches used in modeling studies are capable of providing robust and realistic answers. This work focuses on the accumulation distribution, and in particular considers what features of the accumulation pattern are necessary to model the steady-state response of an ice sheet. We examine the response of a model of the Greenland ice sheet to a variety of accumulation distributions, both observational datasets and simplified parameterizations. The predicted shape of the ice sheet is found to be quite insensitive to changes in the accumulation. The model only differs significantly from the observed ice sheet for a spatially uniform accumulation rate, and the most important factor for the successful simulation of the ice sheet’s shape is that the accumulation decreases with height according to the ability of the atmosphere to hold moisture. However, the internal ice dynamics strongly reflects the influence of the atmospheric circulation on the accumulation distribution.

Aerial photographs from 1947 and 1966, satellite optical imagery from 1973 and 1980, and interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) data from 1992, 1996 and 2000 are employed to detect ice-shelf changes in Pine Island Bay, Antarctica. The front position of the fast-flowing central ice shelf did not migrate discernibly over the past 50 years. New cracks and rifts appeared in the 1990s, however, that reveal a major weakening of the ice shelf. At the grounding-line center, the ice shelf thinned 21 m in 8 years. The northern, slow-moving ice shelf also shows signs of decay: (1) its calving front is retreating at an accelerating rate; and (2) the ice shelf is slowly unpinning from its bedrock anchors. These changes are taking place in a region well beyond the temperature-dependent limit of viability of ice shelves, and hence differ from those observed along the Antarctica Peninsula. They are likely due to a change in oceanic forcing, not to a change in air temperature. One possibility is that the documented intrusion of warm circumpolar deep water on the continental shelf has increased basal melting compared to that required to maintain the ice shelf in a state of mass balance, and that this has triggered a general retreat of ice in this sector.

The surface velocity field of Shirase Glacier, a fast-flowing East Antarctic outlet glacier, is determined from ERS synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images by means of speckle tracking using phase correlation, a technique which matches small image kernels of two complex SAR images by maximization of the local coherence. Velocity estimates are used to calculate surface strain rates, which are then used to calculate the large-scale, vertically integrated force balance and to determine the major stress components resisting the driving stress. For the whole glacier system, the driving stress is largely balanced by the basal drag, but with contributions from lateral drag up to 15% of the driving stress at the grounding line. Longitudinal stress gradients have only local importance to the balance of forces, limited to an area of a few square kilometers near the grounding line, where they resist the driving stress. In the grounded part of the glacier, >90% of the total ice velocity is due to basal sliding. Comparison with a balance-flux distribution of the Antarctic ice sheet suggests that the glacier in the downstream part of the Shirase drainage basin is close to equilibrium, showing a slight negative imbalance.

Nineteen former valley glaciers were reconstructed for their Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) extents in the northern Uinta Mountains, Utah, U.S.A. Mean equilibrium-line altitudes (ELAs) calculated by four methods (accumulation–area ratio, toe–headwall altitude ratio, lateral moraines and cirque floors) range from 3050 to 3300 m a.s.l. Modern mean summer temperatures (Ts) at the ELAs range from 8.7° to 11.2°C, while modern winter precipitation (P) ranges from 354 to 590 mm snow water equivalent (SWE). Based on the difference in elevation of mean ELAs across the range, LGM P values must have ranged from 940 to 3040 mm SWE, assuming the modern summer lapse rate was the same during the LGM. A Ts depression of 5.5°C is required for these precipitation values to plot in the range of modern ELA values. The reconstructed increase in P at the western end of the range is 10 times the modern increase, reflecting the influence of pluvial Lake Bonneville. Assuming ELA depression (ΔELA) resulted from this P increase and a uniform 5.5°C Ts decrease, the regional LGM ΔELA was approximately 900 m.

Time-varying accelerations were observed on Bagley Icefield during the 1993–95 surge of Bering Glacier, Alaska, U.S.A., using repeat-pass synthetic aperture radar interferometry. Observations were from datasets acquired during winter 1991/92 (pre-surge), winter 1993/94 (during the surge) and winter 1995/96 (post-surge). The surge is shown to have extended 110 km up the icefield from Bering Glacier to within 15 km or less of the flow divide. Acceleration and step-like velocity profiles are strongly associated with an along-glacier series of central phase bull’s-eyes with diameters of 0.5–4 km. These bull’s-eyes are interpreted to represent glacier surface rise/fall events of ∼3–30 cm during 1–3 day observation intervals and indicate possible migrating pockets of subglacial water. We present a surge hypothesis that relates late-summer climate to englacial water storage and thence to the subglacial water dynamics — pressurization, hydraulic jacking, depressurization and migration — suggested by our observations.

Measurements of natural and artificial radioisotopes (32Si, 210Pb and 137Cs) and oxygen isotopes (δ18O) have been carried out on surface snow and ice, shallow snow pits and an ice core collected from Dokriani Bamak glacier, central Himalaya, to study the dynamics of glacier ice and short-term climatic changes. Based on the 32Si and 210Pb activities in the meltwaters, the age of the snout ice is 400 years and the flow rate of ice along the glacier length is ∼14 m a−1. The specific activity of 137Cs, corresponding to 1963 fallout, in the surface ice at the equilibrium line yields a flow rate of 32 m a−1, a factor of two higher than that derived for the snout ice. The depth variation of 137Cs concentration in a shallow ice core yields a mean accumulation rate of 0.43 m a−1 for the glacier ice over the past decade. The δ18O of snout ice (−13.4‰) is significantly depleted compared to the average value of −9.2‰ in the shallow ice core, indicating that cooler climatic conditions prevailed around AD 1600. Based on the oxygen isotopic ratios in the shallow pits, an “altitude effect” of 0.9‰ per 100 m in δ18O variation is documented for this glacier.

Snowpack and ice-core samples were collected from the dome of Austfonna ice cap, Svalbard, in the spring of both 1998 and 1999. The samples were analyzed for anions, cations, pH, liquid electrical conductivity and oxygen isotopes. Concentrations of chemical components in snowpack with a history of melting were much lower than those in unmelted snowpack. There was a clear difference between Mg2+/Na+ ratios previously in melted snowpack (0.03 ± 0.02) and in unmelted snowpack (0.11 ± 0.02). We propose that the Mg2+/Na+ ratio can be used as an indicator of whether or not firn or bubbly ice in the Austfonna ice core has experienced melt percolation. The Mg2+/Na+ ratio indicates that firn or bubbly ice prior to AD 1920 was much less affected by melt percolation than firn or bubbly ice formed after 1920.

During a motion event on Unteraargletscher, Bernese Alps, Switzerland, in spring 1996, surface velocities were measured up to eight times a day at four different locations along the central flowline using global positioning system equipment. In addition, accumulated vertical strains over the uppermost 50 and 100 m were measured at a location where the total ice thickness is 260 m. The motion event was accompanied by high horizontal and vertical strain rates as compared to annual mean values. A reversal in strain regime was observed, with horizontal strain rates changing to extension while vertical strain rates became compressive. This strain-rate reversal coincided, within the temporal resolution of the data, with a maximum in vertical ice displacement at the surface.Within a day, variations in vertical strain from 0.04 a−1 to −0.06 a−1 were observed over the uppermost 100 m. Vertical stretching is estimated to have contributed to at least 20% of the anomalous vertical ice movement at the surface. There were significant differences between measured longitudinal strain, averaged over a distance corresponding to a few ice thicknesses, and measured vertical strain. In spring 1997 a similar, but more detailed, set of measurements was collected at the same measuring site, and vertical strain rates were found to vary non-uniformly with depth, with the largest values closest to the surface.

We compare satellite albedo images of Vatnajökull, Iceland, with mass-balance measurements for the years 1991–99. We find that the equilibrium line is mostly not visible when it is located above its position of the previous year(s). Equilibrium-line detection is further hindered by clouds and a gradual transition between ice and firn or snow. Consequently, firn-line elevation at the end of the melting season is not particularly useful for estimating the annual mass balance. Instead, we propose to study the mean albedo of the entire ice cap throughout the melting season so that all available information about the surface albedo is taken into account. The mean net potential global radiation, which can be estimated from the mean surface albedo alone, both depends on and influences summer melt. It also depends on winter precipitation and, integrated over the melting season, is found to relate linearly to the specific mass balance B (r = 0.87 and 0.94 for different outlets of Vatnajökull). B can be estimated quantitatively when this relation is known and qualitatively when it is not. The uncertainty in the satellite-derived value of B is 0.5–0.8 m w.e., which for Vatnajökull corresponds to about 27% of the interannual variability of B.

In this study we investigate the ability of the Regional Atmospheric Climate MOdel (RACMO) to represent temporal variations of Antarctic accumulation using weekly stake array measurements from Neumayer Station. The model uses European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts re-analysis data to force the atmospheric variables at the lateral boundaries of the model domain. Accumulation is defined as precipitation minus sublimation. Generally the model represents reasonably well the synoptic situations that lead to precipitation. The amounts of accumulation are, however, usually lower in the model than in the measurements. It cannot be determined whether the model underestimates precipitation or whether this effect is due to the redistribution of snow by the wind, which is not taken into account in the model but affects the accumulation at the measuring site. Significant differences between model and measurements also occur in cases of net ablation due to wind erosion or when accumulation at the stakes was due to snowdrift from the southwest without precipitation being observed.
