Two-dimensional finite-element calculations of velocity and temperature fields have been applied to the energy balance of a cross-section of Barnes Ice Cap, Baffin Island, Canada. The flow plane currently is cooling near the ice divide and warming near the margin. Long-term simulations show a net warming trend followed by a cooling trend with a steady-state average temperature similar to the present. Sensitivity studies on an idealized version of the flow plane show that the overall temperature responds less than surface-temperature forcing, because a negative feedback in temperature advection is substantially larger than a positive feed-back in strain heating. The response times of the flow plane by itself are somewhat faster but of the same magnitude as response times that would be estimated from one-dimensional modeling. When bedrock-temperature calculations are included, response times increase an order of magnitude, but these do not substantially affect the short-term response.

Four boreholes in Storglaciären, a small valley glacier in northern Sweden, were inspected with a video camera. In two of the boreholes, the apparent glacier bed was filmed. In one borehole, the bed was found to be composed of soft sediment, but in the other it consisted of bedrock. In the latter, the camera moved 5.6 mm relative to the bed during an 80 min period. The recorded camera movement showed a background motion which is in the expected range of basal sliding. Superimposed on the background motion, a jerky motion of a high-speed spike was found. The jerky motion is interpreted as a stress release induced by local topography at the ice–bed interface.

Unusual thrust structures in thin sea ice sheets were observed in Labrador and Greenland. These structures are the result of thin ice sheets being of wind and waves. When thicker pack ice is subjected to these same forces pressure ridges result.

The custatic changes of the ocean in prehistoric and historical times are linked with the fate of the ocean-based salt industry, and are recognized as erratic. An hypothesis is proposed to explain these erratic changes with albedo changes of the polar ice sheets, caused in turn by erratic volcanic dust fall-out. Ash layers in Antarctic ice cores are connected with historical dislocations of maritime civilizations.

Albedo changes associated with the dusting of ice sheets are considered to be the cause of the decline of periods of glacierization generally. Such albedo changes are connected with volcanic activity on the one hand, and loess formation on the other, caused in turn by the growth of the ice sheets.

Tyndall figures, small thin discs of liquid water containing a vapour cavity, were formed in the centres of grains of pure, polycrystalline ice and observed while freeezing and growing. The freeezing experiments showed that the rate of gercrease in the radius of a Tyndall figure does not gerpend upon the radius of the figure, but does gerpend upon the thickness, h. Below a transition thickness, h = 12 μm, the rate of gercrease of the radius varied with h−2; above ht, with h−1. For growing figures the transition thickness was htg ≈ μm and was defined in such a way that when h > tg perturbations with wavelengths greater than 102 μm formed on the siger faces of the Tyndall figures.

A radiometer prototype has been constructed using the S band. In this band, a theoretical evaluation of the differences of temperature which are measurable by the radiometric method proves the influence of the parameters liquid-water content of snow and snow thickness.

When there is no victim, the apparent temperature of a snow layer depends on these parameters and presents important variations because of its natural inhomogeneity. In order to detect the local variation of the apparent temperature due to the presence of a victim, we must refer to an average local temperature obtained by a servo-system. Thus, we obtain a certain number of false alarms which can be suppressed only with a manual sounding. The search itself becomes very long and also requires a systematic exploration of the snow surface by parallel traverses spaced every 2 m. This exploration seems impossible on uneven ground such as a real avalanche area.

Creep curves obtained from the polycrystalline ice samples containing low concentrations of antifreeze glycopeptides (AFGPs) do not show the re-accelerating or tertiary creep that is found in pure ice samples. Previous work has shown that AFGPs inhibit grain-boundary migration in ice and the present results are consistent with this, as tertiary creep is associated with nucleation and growth of new ice grains.

A computer method for calculating the total melting from May to October has been developed both for a single glacier and for a glacial area. In the second case (which is the more interesting and important for hydrology and glaciology) it is necessary to calculate some characteristics of an “average" glacier of the region using morphometric characteristics included in the Catalogue of the U.S.S.R. glaciers. These are: glacier area; average area of moraine on the glacier; weighted average of heights of upper and lower ends of a glacier and weighted average of mean height of firn line. It is also necessary to obtain data on glacier area distribution by height, precipitation data, and data on air temperature and cloudiness at meteorological stations.

In addition to defining typical glacial regions within the limits of the glacial area considered and determination of the “average" glacier characteristics listed above, preparation of the computer programme includes (a) definition of precipitation dependence on orography height and calculation of appropriate parameters, (b) reduction (if necessary) of data obtained from the meteorological station nearest to glacial area to a more prolonged range, (c) calculation of a special balance index of accumulation and melting of seasonal precipitation which makes it possible to define maximum excess of seasonal snow line over the “average" glacier terminus in separate years, and (d) computation of total solar radiation occuring in clear days during May to October.

In the course of computation on computer the following operations are realized: (a) determination of an average value of total radiation arriving during months of May to October period given the real cloudiness conditions, (b) calculation of the height of the snow line on the glacier, (c) calculation of quantity and duration of solid atmospheric precipitation which melts between May and October on the glacier surface, (d) estimation of absorbed solar radiation taking account of the differing albedo of glacial surfaces situated above and below the seasonal snow line, (e) calculation of the total melting of glaciers belonging to the given mountain watershed.

Checking of the calculational method has been performed using data from Lednik Tsentralnyy Tuyuksu and Lednik Ayutor-2 where numerous ablation stakes were installed. Values of measured and calculated melting agree satisfactorily.

During the early melt season, when sea-ice extent begins to retreat due to increasing heat absorption from the atmosphere and ocean, the sea ice becomes porous and weakens. This induces the break-up of ice floes and accelerates the melting process substantially. Determining how sea-ice structure evolves during this season is important for understanding the melting process on a global scale. We investigated this issue using field observations, laboratory experiments and numerical modeling, focusing on the effect of the C-shaped temperature profile on the internal structure of sea ice. Field observations were conducted to examine this effect on ~0.3 m thick ice on Lake Saroma, located at the coast of Hokkaido, Japan. To test the generalization from these observational case studies, laboratory experiments were conducted using a tank with 0.12 m thick ice. Additionally, evolution of ice structure from winter to early spring was numerically analyzed using meteorological data. From these studies, we find that the heat convergence, caused by the C-shape temperature profile, is essential to the internal melting particularly in the upper layer. This increases the porosity of the sea ice, leading to a rapid decrease in its flexural strength during the season.

Sliding experiments were performed at −10°C on smooth surfaces of freshwater columnar-grained S2 ice sliding against itself at a velocity of 8 × 10−4 m s−1, with the purpose of examining whether normal stress parallel to the sliding plane affects frictional resistance. This component of the stress tensor was varied (0.20–1.83 MPa) using a loading system operated under biaxial compression, by orienting the sliding plane at two different angles, 26° and 64°, with respect to the principal loading direction. Under these conditions, no evidence was found to indicate that the normal stress in the direction of sliding affects the friction coefficient.

The typical U-shaped cross-section of glaciated valleys is well known but little understood. If a climatic change results in a glacier occupying a deep river valley, and some erosion is assumed to occur wherever the ice makes contact with the bedrock, then a partial change from the “V” to “U” section is to be expected. A more potent agency in such a change is probably the sapping of the valley sides by the alternate freezing and thawing of melt-water flowing down to, and under, the glacier. This has been briefly suggested by de Martonne and worked out somewhat more fully in the case of cirques1

Numerical glacier and ice-sheet models compute evolving ice geometry and velocity fields using various stress-balance approximations and boundary conditions. At high spatial resolution, with horizontal mesh/grid resolutions of a few kilometers or smaller, these models usually require time steps shorter than climate-coupling time scales because they update ice thickness after each velocity solution. High-resolution performance is degraded by the stability restrictions of such explicit time-stepping. This short note, which considers the shallow ice approximation and Stokes models as stress-balance end members, clarifies the scaling of numerical model performance by quantifying simulation cost per model year in terms of mesh resolution and the number of degrees of freedom. The performance of current-generation explicit time-stepping models is assessed, and then compared to the prospective performance of implicit schemes. The main results highlight the key roles played by the algorithmic scaling of stress-balance solvers and coupled, implicit-step solvers.

To test Nye’s formula relating maximum surface slope at a point on an ice sheet with the thickness at that point, observations were made of the surface slope in north Greenland. Values of the shear stress on the bed at these points are calculated. It is unlikely that variations of the shear stress can be related with rates of movement. It is suggested that the difference between values of shear stress in north Greenland and those in south Greenland is at least partly due to the presence of bottom melting in the north.

The history of glaciological studies in the Svartisen area is outlined, and observations made by earlier workers are summarized. The present position of the ice limit in the area is indicated and is compared with those of the past Evidence of extensive, and almost continuous, retreat of the glaciers is presented, and emphasis is placed on the rapidity of the changes since the 1930’s. In the present century, the formation of marginal lakes and the detachment of glacier tongues have characterized the decay of many of the Svartisen outlets.
