Characterising the structures within glaciers can give unique insight into ice motion processes. On debris-covered glaciers, traditional structural glaciological mapping is challenging because the lower glacier is hidden by the supraglacial debris layer. Here, we use high-resolution optical televiewer (OPTV) image logs from four boreholes drilled into Khumbu Glacier, Nepal, to overcome this limitation and investigate englacial structural features within a Himalayan debris-covered glacier. The OPTV logs show structural features that are up to an order of magnitude thinner than those observed at the glacier surface and reveal five structural units: (I) primary stratification of ice; (II) debris-rich planes that conform with the primary stratification; (III) water-healed crevasse traces; (IV) healed crevasse traces; and (V) steeply dipping planes of basally derived fine sediment near the glacier terminus. The OPTV logs also reveal that the primary stratification both decreases in dip with depth (by up to 56° over 20 m) and rotates with depth (by up to 100° over 20 m) towards parallelism with the proximal lateral moraine. This transformation and the presence of relict layers of basally derived sediment raised into an englacial position – possibly involving thrusting – near the glacier's now stagnant terminus reveal a previously more dynamic glacier regime.

Lemon Creek Glacier, a temperate valley glacier in the Juneau Icefield of Southeast Alaska, is the site of long running (>60 years) glaciological studies. However, the most recent published estimates of its thickness and subglacial topography come from two ~50 years old sources that are not in agreement and do not account for the effects of years of negative mass balance. We collected a 1-km long active-source seismic line on the upper section of the glacier parallel and near to the centerline of the glacier, roughly straddling the equilibrium-line altitude. We used these data to perform joint reflection-refraction velocity modeling and reflection imaging of the glacier bed. We find that this upper section of Lemon Creek Glacier is as much as 150 m (~65%) thicker than previously suggested with a large overdeepening in an area previously believed to have a uniform thickness. Our results lead us to reinterpret the impact of basal motion on ice flow and have a significant impact on expectations of subglacial hydrology. We suggest that further efforts to develop a whole-glacier model of subglacial topography are necessary to support studies that require accurate models of ice thickness and subglacial topography.

A lattice Boltzmann technique for modeling Navier–Stokes fluid flow is extended to allow steady-state simulations of glaciers and other slow-flowing solids. The technique is based on a statistical mechanical representation of flowing ice as a set of particles (populations) which translate and collide on a face-centered cubic lattice. The average trajectories of the populations give the velocities of the ice at any point in the glacier. The method has considerable advantages over other techniques, including its ability to handle complex realistic geometries without additional complications to the code Examples are presented for two-dimensional simulations.

Although radio echo sounding equipment has been used with success for measuring the thickness of ice sheets in the Arctic and Antarctic, a valley glacier poses the additional problems of echoes from the valley walls, which may obscure the bottom echoes, and a high attenuation of radio waves in the ice. During July and August 1970, a study was carried out on Roslin Gletscher in Stauning Alper, East Greenland, to investigate the problems of radio echo sounding on a valley glacier. Results show that reflections from the valley walls are minimized by using sufficiently directional antennae, but attenuation of the signal in the ice is higher than that in polar ice at the same temperature. Water in and on the ice probably accounts for much of the attenuation, and the use of a lower frequency or measurements before the melt commences should give improved performance.

Supraglacial drainage networks play an integral role in both glacier dynamics and run-off timing, and mapping them provides insight into their role in glacial systems. Here we present a reproducible approach for semi-automated mapping of supraglacial hydrologic features, which complements existing work in automated and manual mapping by providing clear definitions for identification of features. This framework uses a digital terrain model (DTM) to identify potential flow routes on the glacier surface, which are then classified using a set of standardized rules based on the DTM and an orthomosaic. We found that the normalized difference water index calculated from digital imagery was influenced by image brightness and introduce a new approach using average RGB values to correct for this. Using this framework we mapped supraglacial drainage networks at Nàłùdäy and Thores Glacier, Canada. The framework was easier to implement with high-resolution (0.5 m) imagery and DTMs, compared to data with lower resolution (10 m), due to the increased detail in topography and feature boundaries at high-resolution. Lower-resolution data captured larger streams (>2 pixels wide), however, indicating that the framework can still be used at this resolution. Mapping supraglacial hydrology using standardized methods opens possibilities for investigating many questions relating to changes in supraglacial hydrology over time.

Neoglacial to historic and recent fluctuations of the firn field and one glacier on Popocatépetl, Mexico, include advance prior to 1519 to possible mid-Neoglaciation stadial position on gentle, north flanks at 4 150 m, then retreat up-valley to 4 335 m by 1906, and to 4 435 m by 1920 at 7 m/year. After volcanic eruptions and melting to about 4 800 m in 1921, growth of firn field and advance of a thin ice lobe before 1949 to 4 573 m by 1950, then retreat in next eight years at about 34 m/year, re-advance of the firn edge as an ice bulge to about 4 700 m by 1968, and as a thick double-lobed glacier to about 4 600 m by 1978 and 1979. A 37 year crevasse study shows continuous active firn-field movement on the north-west side of the cone.

Longitudinal profiles of roches moutonnées have been measured once every centimetre over a total length of more than 100 m. Only wavelengths in the range 3.6 cm < λ < 40 cm have been kept and analysed. Levels and their slopes have a symmetrical, non-Gaussian distribution. The spectral power density varies roughly as γ0ν–n (ν ═ wavenumber ═ 1/λ); n being the same for all the profiles (n ═ 2.36) and γ0 being dependent on the studied area. No significant difference has been found for the shadowing function of the different studied areas. It differs consistently from Smith’s theoretical function.

Direct measurements of the properties of subglacial water are necessary for understanding water flow beneath glaciers. In this paper we describe the construction, calibration and field usage of two instruments—one that measures turbidity and the other that measures electrical conductivity of subglacial water. The sensors are inexpensive and reliable. To demonstrate the potential usefulness of these devices, we present samples of data obtained from beneath Trapridge Glacier, Yukon Territory, Canada.

Ice-marginal features in South Georgia include minor moraine ridges running approximately parallel to the ice margin and developed as superficial forms in various depths of till. It is suggested that these developed as ice-contact landforms, some being created by the interaction of the ice edge and abutting marginal snow bank, whilst the glacier is advancing. This advance is essentially short-term, being part of a seasonal variation in the position of the ice margin. “Snow-bank push” is the term proposed to describe this mechanism of ridge formation.

A radio-echo sounder has been built with which both the amplitude and phase of radio echoes can be measured. In experiments with this instrument at the Devon Island ice cap, in the Canadian Northern Territories, precise amplitude and phase measurements have been made upon radio echoes from the bed of the ice cap. If these measurements are repeated after a number of years, the results, considered in conjunction with snow accumulation and compaction data, will be interpretable as a long-term change in the thickness of the ice cap. Wave dislocations and bend points have been observed in radio echoes reflected from the bed, It is suggested that amplitude and phase measurements from a network of sites may be synthesized in order to explore the geometry of the reflecting surface on a fine scale.

The appearance of double-ridge features on visible imagery of the ice divides of Antarctic ice rises has often been noted but, largely due to a lack of adequate ground truth, their origins have remained enigmatic. We present several examples of ice rises and other isolated ice-flow centres that apparently show double ridges. We investigate one of these in particular: Fletcher Promontory, Antarctica. A digtal-elevation model (DEM) of the summit region is derived from surface profiles obtained using the Global Positioning System (GPS) and this is correlated with Landsat MSS satellite imagery. Precise registration is achieved by correlating image-brightness values with surface slope calculated along the direction of the Sun azimuth in the image. Using a simple bi-directional relation, the DEM data are used to model the Landsat image. We therefore demonstrate that the double ridge is a product of a subtle concavity parallel to the ridge and is unlikely to be dependent on other factors. This concavity is not predicted by steady-state models of ice divides and so we suggest that the ridge may not be in a steady-state but responding to changes in the glaciological boundary conditions. We speculate that this may be an indication of ongoing migration of the ice divide.

Two seismic arrays recorded in an 11 month field experiment in 1985 the seismicity of Ekström Ice Shelf in the area of an ice rumple and an inlet, situated respectively about 10 km north-west and 7 km north of the German Antarctic station Georg von Neumayer (lat. 70°37′S., long. 08°22′W). Most of the focal depths of the icequakes considered until now are in the range 5–9 m; the ice-rumple area shows extremely high seismic activity. Tensile fracture is the most frequent fault mechanism, although there are a few shear-fracture events. The ice rumple’s seismicity provides information on the dynamics of the ice shelf in this area. A comparison of this time-dependent seismicity with tides suggests that most of this seismicity is induced by tides. The most active period of this seismicity starts at the beginning of low tide and ends at low tide. The location of the epicentres of icequakes recorded at that time and the digital recording on tapes of the seismicity without interruption for 396 h shows a jerky vertical movement of the ice shelf in response to tides; this can be interpreted as a kind of “grater effect”, especially at the southern ice-rock boundary of the ice rumple.

The seismicity in the inlet is much less and tensile fracture seems to be the only fault mechanism.

Significant new information on radiation transmittance through ice in the photosynthetically active range (400–700 nm) has been collected at an inland lake near Ann Arbor, Michigan, U.S.A., and at one site on the Great Lakes (lat. 46° 46´ N., long. 84° 57´ W.). Radiation transmittance through clear, refrozen slush, and brash ice varied according to snow cover, ice type, atmospheric conditions, and solar altitude.

Snow cover caused the greatest diminution of radiation. During periods of snow melt, radiation transmittance through snow-covered ice surfaces increased slightly. Moderate diurnal variations of radiation transmittance (about 5%) are attributed to solar altitude changes and associated changes in the direct- diffuse balance of solar radiation combined with the type of ice surface studied. Variations in radiation transmittance of nearly 20% over short periods of time are attributed to abrupt changes from a clear to a cloudy atmosphere.

A two-layer reflectance–transmittance model illustrates the interaction of layers in an ice cover such as snow or frost overlying clear ice. Upper layers of high reflectance have considerable control on the overall transmittance and reflectance of an ice cover.

Electrical resistivity measurements were made in a series of closely spaced holes drilled to the base of Storglaciären. Electrodes were lowered to the bottoms of the holes where they made contact with the substrate beneath the glacier. The measurements show that a layer of till, ~0.4–0.7 m thick, is present at the base of the glacier. The low resistivity of the layer indicates that it has a high water content, compared with tills of similar composition in the pro-glacial environment. A marked reduction in resistivity after a heavy rain storm demonstrates that the water content is sensitive to variations in water input at the surface.

At the beginning of spring snowmelt in an upland stream in Scotland a three-fold increase in total dissolved load occurs. This is shown to be the most significant of the acute events occurring during the year.

The drill hole at “Byrd” station, which was completed in January 1968 to a vertical gerpth of 7 063 ft (2 153 m) below the top of the hole casing, was resurveyed in January 1975 to a vertical gerpth of 4 835 ft (1 474 m)· Inclination and azimuth measurements were mager with a Parsons multiple shoe inclinometer and compared with the earlier measurements mager during drilling. The results indicate a progressively increasing displacement with gerpth to a value of 51.2 ft (15.6 m) or about 7.3 ft/year (2.23 m/year) at the 4 835 ft (1 474 m) level. The direction of movement relative to the surface varies freom south-west at 300 ft (91.5 m) to north-east at 1 100 ft (335 m) to east at 3 368 ft (1 027 m) to north-east at 4835 ft (l 474 m), indicative of a complex twisting motion. An increase in accessible gerpth along the hole axis of 18 ft (549 m) beyond the 1969 gerpth was noted. No attempt was mager to measure hole diameter or vertical strain. It is recommengerd that the hole be resurveyed in 3-5 years if it is still logistically feasible, using a more up-dated inclinometer.

Calculation procedures are developed and results shown for the exact calculation of extinction and meteorological visual range using the blowing-snow mass in the atmosphere and particle radius. Results of the calculations show: (1) For monochromatic radiation, geometrical optics approximations of the extinction efficiency are found to provide results of only moderate accuracy in calculating the extinction of radiation by a single particle. (2) For broad-band radiation, the geometrical optics approximation is sufficiently accurate for many single-particle measurement instruments and applications, except in the infra-red band where Mie theory should be used. (3) For typical blowing-snow particle-size distributions, the shape parameter of the distribution of particle radii and the mean particle radius are very important in broad-band extinction and visual-range modelling. Estimates of blowing-snow quantities from broad-band extinction measurements or visual range from blowing-snow quantities should address the shape and mean value of the snow-particle radius distribution.
