A linear relationship between strength and density is a characteristic feature of deposited snow. This relationship is explained theoretically in the case of old dry snow in ternis of the theory of sintering. The discontinuity in the relationship at a density of about 0.4 g./cm3 is considered to mark a transition point below which the snow densifies primarily by rearranement of the grains and the strength increases by the growth of existing bonds, and above which densification occurs by volume diffusion and the strength increases primarily by the creation of new bonds. Experimental evidence to support these ideas is presented.

Ice accretion on a non-rotating cylinder was studied under icing conditions involving a wet-growth (glaze) process. Experiments were performed in an outdoor wind tunnel designed for icing studies. In this paper, the experimental method is introduced and the characteristics of form, size, and time development of deposits are given. In terms of freezing conditions, these characteristics were found to be very complex, in which all the external effects: air temperature, wind conditions, liquid water content in the air, and accretion time, are of the same order of importance. In a wet-growth process there exists above the icing surface a water film, the behaviour and dynamics of which are affected by various variables. The water film seems to play an important role in the wet-growth icing.

Surging and streaming of glaciers are modulated by meltwater availability and pressure which controls mechanical coupling at their beds. Using laboratory-scale experimental modelling and palaeoglaciological mapping, we explore how subglacial drainage landsystems control meltwater drainage efficiency and ice flow velocities for terrestrial-based ice lobes resting on flat horizontal and permeable beds. Two end-members regimes, surging and streaming, appear in our experiments. The surge regime is characterised by a rapid increase of drainage efficiency through development of tunnel valleys and their tributaries, thus reducing the duration of ice flow speed-up events by lowering water pressures and increasing ice-bed coupling. Tunnel valleys connected to ice lobe margins, submarginal thrust moraines, reduced ice lobe extensions and ephemeral shear margins are the most distinctive characteristics of this regime. The stream regime is characterised by disconnected channels of smaller dimensions unable to evacuate all the meltwater: this prolonged drainage inefficiency leads to sustained high ice flow velocity and steady shear margins. Small and rectilinear meltwater channels devoid of tributaries, often disconnected from ice lobe margins, and lineation swarms are diagnostic of this regime.

The dependence of the extinction coefficient on salinity was investigated for both NaCl-ice and salt-ice made from natural sea-water. Specimens were prepared under a variety of conditions and examined over the wavelength range 4 000 to 8 000 Â. The effects of scattering from air bubbles trapped in the ice were examined for ice made from distilled water. It was found that the method of preparing samples markedly affected their structure, but that, when prepared in the same manner, salt-ice made from natural sea-water and NaCl-ice did not show significantly different transmission properties. It was found that, for a wavelength of 6 328 Â, the data could be fit to the relation within an uncertainty of 26%, where ke is the extinction coefficient, x is the salinity of the ice in g/kg. Within an uncertainty of 10%, there was no variation in transmission for ice at the same temperature and salinity over the wavelength range 4 000 to 8 000 Â. All measurements were made at a temperature of -20° C.

The lower one-third of “Sioux Glacier” in south-central Alaska was buried beneath a debris slide during the 27 March 1964 earthquake. Investigations to determine the effect of this cover on the regimen of the glacier revealed that it has increased in thickness by as much as 28 m, primarily as a result of the insulating effect of this debris cover. In areas where debris has continuously veneered the surface, at least since 1938, the ice is also thicker. A longitudinal profile reveals that the area near the upper extent of the slide debris has become intensely crevassed and has been lowered as much as 8 m between 1965 and 1966, while the terminal area is up to 5 m higher and is characterized by thrusting. It is concluded that a kinematic wave passed through this glacier sometime between 1965 and 1966.

The upper zone of debris-veneered ice is moving at 175 m/year while the terminal area is flowing at only 21 m/year. The rate of down-glacier decrease in velocity is about 0.06 m/year per meter of horizontal distance except for an area approximately 1 km from the terminus. Here, the rate of decrease in velocity is 0.1 m/year per meter. The change in rate is presumed to be related to topographic control caused by the recent thinning of the ice here.

We discuss the results of an investigation of the chemical composition of the ice cover on the high-mountain lake Morskie Oko in the Tatra Mountains, Carpathians, Poland. In the years 2007–13, the ice cover was characterized by an average duration of 6 months, a thickness range of 0.40–1.14 m, and a multilayered structure with water or slush inclusion. In water from the melted ice cover, chloride (max. 69%) and sulphate (max. 51%) anions and ammonium (max. 66%) and calcium (max. 78%) cations predominated. Different concentrations of ions (F−, Cl−, NO3−, SO42−, Na+, K+, Mg2+, Ca2+, NH4+) in the upper, middle and bottom layers of ice were observed, along with long-term variability and spatial diversification within the ice layer over the lake. Snowpack lying on the ice and the water body under the ice were also investigated, and the influence on the ice cover of certain ions in elevated concentrations was observed (e.g. Cl− in the upper ice cover and the snowpack, and Ca2+ in the bottom ice cover and water body).

Snow dams have been observed in many stream channels in the Arctic and the sub-Arctic, but there is no theoretical analysis of their decay processes. These processes include snowmelt, seepage erosion, down-cutting, snow-slope failure and flotation of the snow dam. Snowmelt can be determined by the energy balance. Seepage of water will cause serious erosion at the point where the stream or pond level in front of the dam intersects the dam face. Erosion by water overflowing the dam is due to down-cutting, under-cutting and thermal erosion. Down-cutting increases with discharge but decreases with the shear strength of the snow. Where a hydraulic jump occurs downstream of the dam, under-cutting can accelerate dam decay. Thermal erosion, depending mainly on water temperature, may be less significant than the previous two processes. Slope failure occurs when the driving forces exceed the resisting forces, and these are affected by snow property and snow load. When the stream or pond level downstream of the dam rises rapidly, the dam is prone to float. As peak flow often occurs during the break-up period, results of the theoretical study of the mechanisms of snow-dam decay will improve flood forecasting for Arctic streams.

Experiments on plate-like specimens have established that across-column cracks from within S2 (columnar) salt-water ice when compressed uniaxially along a direction inclined to the long axis of the grains. Wing cracks initiate from the across-column cracks and lengthen into axial splits when the ice is rapidly deformed; correspondingly; the macroscopic behavior changes from ductile to brittle. The across-column cracking is attributed to grain-boundary sliding, and the splitting to the suppression of crack-tip creep.

Gravity studies indicate that the Sukkertoppen ice cap is about 400 m. thick. The annual snow accumulation increases westwards from about 13 g. cm.−2 near the eastern edge of the ice cap to about 34 g. cm. −2 near Mount Atter, in the south-west. Probably all of the ice cap is “temperate”.

The structure of some moraines in and around two glaciers in northern Norway was studied by the method of fabric analysis. It was found that englacial material tends to lie parallel to the direction of movement of the ice, and material in lateral and terminal moraines shows orientations which appear to be related to the conditions under which it was deposited.

Glaciological mass-balance measurements have been the backbone of internationally coordinated glacier monitoring. The resulting annual observations have been used to understand glacier reactions to climate change, and to assess both regional and global glacier mass changes and related contributions to runoff and sea-level rise. However, the comparability of annual observations is hampered by differences in survey periods and mass-balance amplitudes between glaciers, regions and hemispheres. This study presents a simple approach to temporally downscale glaciological mass balance using seasonal observations and sine functions. The proposed analytical model allows reconstruction of the seasonal course of glacier mass balance at weekly to monthly resolution from only annual or seasonal observations. Strengths and limitations of this analytical approach are discussed and compared with results from numerical mass-balance modelling. Potential applications include seasonal corrections of glaciological and geodetic observations and comparisons to monthly results from spaceborne gravimetry and altimetry.

Both submarine melt and calving are important for the overall mass balance of marine-terminating glaciers, but uncertainty is rife with regards to the magnitude of the processes. Modelling allows for these processes to be investigated without the need to visit inaccessible ice marginal zones. This study looks at the impact of different submarine melt and sea-ice back pressure scenarios on modelled calving activity and dynamics at Kronebreen, Svalbard, by running separate summer and winter simulations with various submarine melt parameterisations and sea-ice characteristics. It is found that submarine melt is an important driver of seasonal variation in modelled glacier dynamics and calving activity, with the choice of sliding law also exerting a significant influence on results.

Petrologic analysis was performed on ice-wedge ice in order to investigate changes in fabric across wedges in relation to the growth mechanism. Crystal size increased from the centre outward and strongly preferred dimensional orientations developed parallel to the sides of wedges. c-axis orientations changed from a horizontal girdle at the wedge centre to a point maximum normal to the foliation at the boundary. These changes are related to recrystallization and grain growth associated with the horizontal stress field. In massive ice penetrated by an ice wedge, crystal size and complexity of crystal shape decreased toward the wedge, dimensional orientations tended to become parallel to the wedge, and c-axes formed a point maximum normal to the wedge boundary.

The speed of Ice Stream B, Antarctica, was measured twice a day-over a 1 month study period, and found to be steady at about the ±3½% level, the sensitivity of the measurements. The vertical strain was measured at three sites over a 1 year period at 1 h intervals with sensitivities of 2 or 0.2 ppm. The strain rate varied on all time-scales. Events of high strain rate were observed, but never at more than one site at a time. They can probably be understood in terms of local modification of the strain field associated with crevassing. Diurnal variation in strain rate was observed at one and possibly two sites during two summers. The seismicity was measured at all three sites, and diurnal and seasonal variations were prominent at all, the seismicity being much more intense in winter. Several possible causes of the diurnal variations in strain and seismicity are considered: thermal and atmospheric effects, and the effects of tides in the Ross Sea.

Following construction of a glacial ice runway on the Ross Ice Shelf, Antarctica, and prior to flight operations, the runway was proof-rolled. The proof exercise was designed to simulate typical heavy aircraft. Initial testing produced numerous brittle surface failures in the runway ice. Thin sections of ice cores taken from the failed areas showed large crystals (с axis vertical) of clear, blue ice with long, vertical bubbles, indicative of ice formed directly from meltwater. Uniaxial unconfined compression tests on core samples were used to compare runway ice strength with published data for polycrystalline laboratory ice. Since the frequent failure of surface ice had not been expected, it was critical to understand the formation and mechanical properties of the weak ice to prevent its occurrence in the future and to strengthen the existing problem areas. We discuss the likely scenarios for development of weak ice on the airstrip and the physical properties of this type of ice. Also, the procedure used to repair successfully the runway surface is described, which culminated in test flights, followed by full flight operations.
