The group of corries on Croaghaun Mountain on Achill Island is described. The existence of these corries and the absence of any extraneous drift from the mountain is taken as evidence that the inland ice of Co. Mayo did not extend far beyond the present coast. The relation of the corries to the local topography is described, and the effect of the topography on the apparent snow line is discussed. The probable snow line of the main glaciation of the west of Ireland is shown to be in the neighbourhood of 1250 ft. O.D. (384 m.) but may have been as low as 1000 ft. O.D. (305 m.) and that of the Late-glacial period in the neighbourhood of 1750 ft. O.D. (533 m.).

The inelastic behaviour of ice Ih single crystals has been investigated by an inverted torsional pendulum in the low-frequency range. Three features are distinguished:

(i) a relaxation peak previously observed by several authors in the higher-frequency range,

(ii) an internal friction increasing with temperature in the high-temperature range (230–273 K),

(iii) within this high-temperature range, internal friction becomes amplitude dependent, and this dependence becomes greater the greater the temperature.

In this case, the internal friction has been interpreted in terms of movements of dislocations. Hence, the experimental results are interpreted with a model of internal friction based on an empirical relation for the velocity of dislocations. This model of internal friction is in fair agreement with experimental data . It is possible then to get an estimate of dislocation density. Hence it is shown that internal friction experiments can be useful in the study of the plastic behaviour of ice single crystals.

A simple mathematical expression for the density distribution of dry snow is described in this note. It compares very well with observations.

The age–depth relationship of the Vostok (Antarctica) ice core has been reconstructed in the depth interval 3300–3347 m, by comparing three gas properties in ice (CO2, CH4 and δ18Oatm) with those in the EPICA Dome C (Antarctica) core. Fourteen Vostok depths were examined in this interval, and it was found that nine samples are uniquely dated if candidate ages are restricted to the interval between 400 and 650 kyr. One of these samples is uniquely dated without restriction. The analysis supports previous reports that this section contains ice from Termination V, but that the stratigraphic order of ice is reversed. The top of the overturned layer lies between 3316 and 3319 m. At least one other stratigraphic disturbance was found between 3340 and 3343 m, as indicated by another reversal of the age–depth relationship. Finally, the oldest ice in this section is dated at ≥440 kyr, confirming the existence of ice from the cold marine isotope stage (MIS) 12 interval.

The flow of a glacier along a channel of constant longitudinal curvature is analyzed using analytical and finite-element methods. Channels of various cross–sectional shape are investigated, ranging from a simple rectangular form with zero shear traction along the bed to realistic profiles taken from Blue Glacier, Washington. Terms in the equilibrium and rate-of-deformation equations which are inversely dependent on radius and a body force which varies transversely across the glacier introduce several characteristic features into the stress and velocity fields of the curving glacier. The stress center line is shifted toward the inside of the bend, causing an asymmetric crevasse pattern and non‒zero stress magnitude at the surface on the geometric center line of the channel. The stress field is dependent on the stress exponent in the flow law and is non-linear across the surface. The surface–velocity pattern shows a “tilting” of the usual high‒order parabolic form, being skewed toward the inside of the bend. There is a shift in the velocity maximum from the deepest part of the channel. All of these curvature‒induced features are dependent on the radius of curvature, actual channel geometry, and stress exponent in the flow law. Model results show excellent agreement with the velocity and crevasse patterns on the curving Blue Glacier.

Multiple scattering of the solar flux in snow and “bubbly” ice can account for the variable albedo, the non-specular reflection, the non-exponential flux decrease near the surface, and the large upward flux within the medium. The scattering problem has been formulated and solved exactly, assuming isotropic scattering in a plane-parallel, semi-infinite, grey medium. The solution shows a non-exponential flux decrease near the surface and an exponential decrease deep in the medium. For such a medium, the albedo will increase with decreasing solar altitude in a manner which agrees to within one per cent of observed snow albedos in the Antarctic.

c-axis fabrics of the GISP2 ice core from central Greenland have been measured rapidly and accurately in the field, using both compressional and shear waves generated by an inexpensive, commercially available, “idiot-proof” device. Compressional-wave data were collected at 10 m intervals for the upper 2250 m of the ice sheet and show progressive clustering of c axes toward the vertical with increasing depth but no large steps at climatic boundaries in the core. The degree of clustering measured by ultrasound agrees closely with that measured using traditional optical techniques but the ultrasound technique is easier and faster than optical methods. A slight asymmetry in the c-axis clustering is revealed by the shear-wave data and increases with increasing depth, indicating that deformation is not symmetric about the vertical at the site.

Palaeo-glacial landforms can give insights into bed roughness that currently cannot be captured underneath contemporary-ice streams. A few studies have measured bed roughness of palaeo-ice streams but the bed roughness of specific landform assemblages has not been assessed. If glacial landform assemblages have a characteristic bed-roughness signature, this could potentially be used to constrain where certain landform assemblages exist underneath contemporary-ice sheets. To test this, bed roughness was calculated along 5 m × 5 m resolution transects (NEXTMap DTM, 5 m resolution), which were placed over glacial landform assemblages (e.g. drumlins) in the UK. We find that a combination of total roughness and anisotropy of roughness can be used to define characteristic roughness signatures of glacial landform assemblages. The results show that different window sizes are required to determine the characteristic roughness for a wide range of landform types and to produce bed-roughness signatures of these. Mega scale glacial lineations on average have the lowest bed-roughness values and are the most anisotropic landform assemblage.

Methanesulfonate was investigated as a potential contributor to the sulfur budget, based on analysis of a firn core from Collins Ice Cap, King George Island, Antarctica (62°10′ S, 58°50′ W). The anion was found to be present at a mean concentration of 0.17 μeq L−1, with a maximum of 0.73 μeq L−1. Dating based on the δ18O profile suggests that the principal peaks of methanesulfonate are associated with snow deposited in summer and autumn. A careful examination of MSA, SO42− and nssSO42− profiles indicates that two of the three peaks in the MSA profile may result mainly from migration and relocation of MSA. The mechanism responsible for this might be similar to that for deep cores from other Antarctic glaciers, supporting the migration hypothesis proposed by prior researchers and extending it to near-temperate ice. Due to the post-depositional modification, the main part of the MSA profile of the firn is no longer indicative of the seasonal pattern of MSA in the atmosphere, and the basis for calculation of the MSA/nssSO42− ratio should be changed. The MSA/nssS042 ratio obtained by a new computation is 0.22, 10% higher than that ignoring the effect of MSA migration.

In situ observations of wave attenuation by sea ice are required to develop and validate wave–ice interaction parameterizations in coupled wave models. To estimate ice-induced wave attenuation in the field, the wave field is typically assumed to be stationary. In this study we investigate the validity of this assumption by creating a synthetic wave field in sea ice for different attenuation rates. We observe that errors in estimates of the wave attenuation rates are largest when attenuation rates are small or temporal averaging periods are short. Moreover, the adoption of the wave stationarity assumption can lead to negative estimates of the instantaneous wave attenuation rate. These apparent negative values should therefore not be attributed to wave growth or erroneous measurements a priori. Surprisingly, we observe that the validity of the wave stationarity assumption is irrelevant to the accuracy of estimates of wave attenuation rates as long as the temporal averaging period is taken sufficiently long. This may provide opportunities in using satellite-derived products to estimate wave attenuation rates in sea ice at global scales.

Storglaciären (lat. 67.5° N., long. 17.5° E.) is a sub-polar glacier which has been the object of detailed study for many years. It responds in a sensitive way to annual and long-term changes in climate but it does not surge. Conditions at the bed and the distribution of englacial water are of considerable interest. In this paper we discuss an attempt to learn something about these matters by radio-echo soundings at metric and decametric wavelengths. We analyse radio-echo records mainly using a scalar-wave theory of the diffraction of pulses. The pulse shapes of echoes are useful because they help us to recognize the types of target and processes responsible for the echoes. We then use simple statistical measurements of radio echoes to provide estimates of certain average properties of the targets. We estimate, for example, the roughness of the glacier bed and the distribution and orientations of scatterers within the ice.

Work on the Fröya Gletscher, N.E. Greenland, appears to substantiate the evidence already brought forward for the irregular flow of glaciers over short periods. It appears possible to correlate the daily temperature regime with the flow of some “polar glaciers.” The distribution of thrust planes seems to have no noticeable effect on the flow. It is suggested that Block-Schollen movement may underlie the jerky motion of some of even the slower moving glaciers. A subglacial stream bed on the Skille Gletscher was explored from the snout for a distance of 500 m. It is estimated that at the farthest point the ice was 76 m. thick. There appears to be good observational evidence for de Martonne’s theory of medial moraines extending to the bed of the glacier.

Lemon Creek Glacier served as the focus of attention of the Juneau Ice Field Research Project from 1953 through 1958, during which period glaciological and related research was accomplished. This paper provides an historical framework for those studies by (1) considering variations of Lemon Creek Glacier in recent centuries and during millennia since the last ice age, and (2) describing certain relationships which appear to exist between these variations and the climatic record.

It is found that Lemon Creek Glacier has been receding intermittently since a maximum c. 1750 and by 1958 had lost c. 25 per cent of the former area. Most rapid recession occurred during the periods 1891–1902 and 1929–58. Behaviour of the glacier since c. 1750 reveals a parallelism with glaciers in most of the regions where temperature trends have been graphed as well as with other glaciers of the Juneau Ice Field. The advances of the 1950’s observed in the Rocky, Cascade and Olympic Mountains do not, however, show up in the Juneau area. Lemon Creek Glacier has not advanced more than 375 m. beyond the 1750 position, if at all, during the last 10,000 yr.

The Columbia Icefield rests upon limestones containing natural caves that drain waters from the glacier sole. The principal cave is sealed at one end by an extrusion of glacier ice 300 m below the icefield surface. The hydrologic regime of the cave indicates that the modern icefield is temperate in character and that water is present at the glacier sole throughout the year. An interpretation of the air temperature pattern in the cave suggests that the geothermal flux to the glacier is only 10-40% of the expected value because heat is abstracted by melt water circulating through the rock. U, Th and O isotopic analyses of calcite speleothems further indicate that the base of the icefield has probably been temperate throughout the past 150000 years. The cave was inundated when glaciers expanded during the classical Wisconsinan main Würm period. The inundation implies maintenance of a permanent water table at some hundreds of meters above the base in a valley glacier 750—800 m in depth.

Surface deformations in the neighborhood of a crevasse field were measured over short (3 m) gage lengths in order to study flow conditions associated with crevasse formation. The results obtained were unusual in that they were inconsistent with large-scale results found by previous workers. It was concluded that the presence of small-scale surface effects, such as fractures, pot-holes and healed crevasses give rise to small-scale deformation fields with large spatial and temporal variations and that there is a lower limit of gage length below which deformation measurements pertinent to regional (low phenomena cannot be made. This lower limit is apparently an order of magnitude greater than the spacing of the features which give rise to localized effects.

A linear elastic finite element computer program was applied to determine the stress distributions in multi-layered snow-packs typical of those found at Berthoud Pass, Colorado. The effect on stress distribution of wide variations in elastic material properties was examined. Also, an attempt was made to model the shear failure of a weak sub-layer in the snow-pack by relaxing the condition that the bottom snow layer be firmly attached to the ground.

The future of tidewater glaciers in response to climate warming is one of the largest sources of uncertainty in the contribution of the Greenland ice sheet to global sea-level rise. In this study, we investigate the ability of an ice-sheet model to reproduce the past evolution of the velocity and surface elevation of a tidewater glacier, Upernavik Isstrøm, by prescribing front positions. To achieve this, we run two ensembles of simulations with a Weertman and a regularised-Coulomb friction law. We show that the ice-flow model has to include a reduction in friction in the first 15 km upstream of the ice front in fast-flowing regions to capture the trends observed during the 1985–2019 period. Without this process, the ensemble model overestimates the ice flow before the retreat of the front in 2005 and does not fully reproduce its acceleration during the retreat. This results in an overestimation of the total mass loss between 1985 and 2019 of 50% (300 vs 200 Gt). Using a variance-based sensitivity analysis, we show that uncertainties in the friction law and the ice-flow law have a greater impact on the model results than surface mass balance and initial surface elevation.

The direction of inland ice movement can, in some cases, be reconstructed by a study of the forms at the base of till strata. These forms are “ribs”, which are formed either as slickensides or as a type of negative “flute”; “edges” and “wedges”, which are caused by shearing movements at the base of the ice; or “undulations”, probably created by restricting movements at the base of the ice. These forms appear to be elongated in the direction of ice movement. As these features can easily be measured, they can be used to check, supplement, or replace the results of till-fabric measurements.
