In the astrophysics community it is common practice to model collisionless dust, entrained in a gas flow, as a pressureless fluid. However, a pressureless fluid is fundamentally different from a collisionless fluid – the latter of which generically possess a non-zero anisotropic pressure or stress tensor. In this paper we derive a fluid model for collisionless dust, entrained in a turbulent gas, starting from the equations describing the motion of individual dust grains. We adopt a covariant formulation of our model to allow for the geometry and coordinate systems prevalent in astrophysics, and provide a closure valid for the accretion disc context. We show that the continuum mechanics properties of a dust fluid corresponds to a higher-dimensional anisotropic Maxwell fluid, after the extra dimensions are averaged out, with a dynamically important rheological stress tensor. This higher-dimensional treatment has the advantage of keeping the dust velocity and velocity of the fluid seen, and their respective moments, on the same footing. This results in a simplification of the constitutive relation describing the evolution of the dust rheological stress.

The shear-induced diffusivity of non-Brownian spheres in monodisperse suspensions undergoing viscous flow was calculated using simulations that account for particle roughness and friction as independent parameters. The diffusivity increases significantly as the friction coefficient is increased, and the effect is largest on rougher particles. Roughness reduces the transverse diffusivities relative to smoother particles for sufficiently concentrated suspensions of frictionless and low-friction particles. However, the diffusivity of roughened particles is larger than smoother ones at high values of the friction coefficient. The increase of the diffusivity with friction is associated with a significant broadening of the variance of the rotational velocities. The most prevalent observation, when correlating the microstructure to changes in diffusivity for frictionless particles, is that less diffusive systems, with larger roughness, form layers along the flow direction. These results confirm previous experimental and simulation results that roughness can decrease diffusivity at large concentrations using a more detailed model. Also, comparisons of the simulation results with previously published experimental measurements indicate that friction improves the alignment of the results with experiments.

We examine the gravity-driven flow of a thin film of viscous fluid spreading over a rigid plate that is lubricated by another viscous fluid. We model the flow over such a ‘soft’ substrate by applying the principles of lubrication theory, assuming that vertical shear provides the dominant resistance to the flow. We do so in axisymmetric and two-dimensional geometries in settings in which the flow is self-similar. Different flow regimes arise, depending on the values of four key dimensionless parameters. As the viscosity ratio varies, the behaviour of the intruding layer ranges from that of a thin coating film, which exerts negligible traction on the underlying layer, to a very viscous gravity current spreading over a low-viscosity, near-rigid layer. As the density difference between the two layers approaches zero, the nose of the intruding layer steepens, approaching a shock front in the equal-density limit. We characterise a frontal stress singularity, which forms near the nose of the intruding layer, by performing an asymptotic analysis in a small neighbourhood of the front. We find from our asymptotic analysis that unlike single-layer viscous gravity currents, which exhibit a cube-root frontal singularity, the nose of a viscous gravity current propagating over another viscous fluid instead exhibits a square-root singularity, to leading order. We also find that large differences in the densities between the two fluids give rise to flows similar to that of thin films of a single viscous fluid spreading over a rigid, yet mobile, substrate.

Direct numerical simulations are performed to explore the evolution behaviour of the turbulent/non-turbulent interface (TNTI) in a temporally evolving turbulent plane jet, using the evolution equation for the TNTI surface area. A novel algorithm is used to calculate the surface area of the TNTI and entrainment flux. It is shown that the surface area remains relatively constant, which leads to the mean entrainment velocity being inversely proportional to the square root of time. On average, the effects of the stretching and curvature/viscous terms on the TNTI area roughly counterbalance each other, while the curvature/inviscid term associated with vortex stretching is virtually zero. More specifically, the stretching term contributes to the production of the surface area, while the curvature/viscous term is associated with a destruction in the surface area. The local effect of the curvature/viscous term exhibits high spatial intermittency with small-scale extreme/intense events, whereas the effect of the large-scale stretching term is more continuous. To shed light on the contribution of curvature/viscous term to the evolution of the surface area, we decompose it into three components. The effect of the curvature/normal diffusion term (the curvature/viscous dissipation term) in the bulging regions (the valley regions) mainly contributes to the production of the area. The continuous decrease of the average mean curvature is associated with the production of the bulging regions and the destruction of the valley regions. Finally, although the entrainment velocity is mainly dominated by the normal diffusion effect, all three components related to the viscous effect are indispensable to the production and destruction of the TNTI area. This numerical study contributes to a better understanding of the evolution of the TNTI area.

We study the melting process of a solid under microgravity, driven solely by lateral vibrations that are perpendicular to the applied temperature gradient due to the absence of gravity-induced convection. Using direct numerical simulations with the phase-field method, we examine two-dimensional vibration-induced melting in a square cavity over four orders of magnitude of vibrational Rayleigh numbers, $10^5\le Ra_{{vib}}\le 10^9$. Our results show that as melting progresses, the flow structure transitions from a periodic-circulation regime with diffusion-dominated heat transfer to a columnar regime with vibroconvection. The mean height of the liquid–solid interface follows a power-law dependency with time, $\bar {\xi } \sim \tilde t^{1/(2-2\alpha )}$, where $\alpha = 0$ in the periodic-circulation regime and $\alpha = 1/2$ in the columnar regime. We further observe that within the columnar regime, the morphological evolution of the liquid–solid interface is influenced by the interaction of columnar thermal plumes in the central regions and the peripheral flow near the sidewalls. Specifically, we offer a comprehensive analysis of the plume merging behaviour, which is governed by the aspect ratio ($\bar {\xi }$) of the liquid layer and the intensity of vibration, quantified by the effective vibrational Rayleigh number $Ra_{vib}^{eff}$. We identify the relationship between the number of columnar plumes $K_m$ and $Ra_{vib}^{eff}$, finding that $K_m \sim \bar {\xi }^{-1} (Ra_{vib}^{eff})^{\gamma }$ with the fitting scaling exponent $\gamma = 0.150 \pm 0.025$. We subsequently quantify the characteristics of the interface roughness amplitude evolution in microgravity vibroconvection. Our results indicate that the roughness amplitude exhibits a power-law dependence on the mean height of the liquid layer. Drawing from the Stefan boundary condition, we theoretically deduce this dependence under the assumption of a non-uniform heat flux distribution at the interface, where the theory is corroborated by our numerical simulations.

We investigate the turbulence below a quasi-flat free surface, focusing on the energy transport in space and across scales. We leverage a large zero-mean-flow tank where homogeneous turbulence is generated by randomly actuated jets. A wide range of Reynolds number is spanned, reaching sufficient scale separation for the emergence of an inertial sub-range. Unlike previous studies, the forcing extends through the source layer, although the surface deformation remains millimetric. Particle image velocimetry along a surface-normal plane resolves from the dissipative to the integral scales. The contributions to turbulent kinetic energy from both vertical and horizontal components of velocity approach the prediction based on rapid distortion theory as the Reynolds number is increased, indicating that discrepancies among previous studies are likely due to differences in the forcing. At odds with the theory, however, the integral scale of the horizontal fluctuations grows as the surface is approached. This is rooted in the profound influence exerted by the surface on the inter-scale energy transfer: along horizontal separations, the direct cascade of energy in horizontal fluctuations is hindered, while an inverse cascade of that in vertical fluctuations is established. This is connected to the structure of upwellings and downwellings. The former, characterized by somewhat larger spatial extent and stronger intensity, are associated with extensional surface-parallel motions. They thus transfer energy to the larger horizontal scales, prevailing over downwellings which favour the compression (and concurrent vertical stretching) of the eddies. Both types of structures extend to depths between the integral scale and the Taylor microscale.

Stall cells are transverse cellular patterns that often appear on the suction side of airfoils near stalling conditions. Wind-tunnel experiments on a NACA4412 airfoil at Reynolds number ${Re}=3.5 \times 10^5$ show that they appear for angles of attack larger than $\alpha = 11.5^{\circ }\ (\pm 0.5^{\circ })$. Their onset is further investigated based on global stability analyses of turbulent mean flows computed with the Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) equations. Using the classical Spalart–Allmaras turbulence model and following Plante et al. (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 908, 2021, A16), we first show that a three-dimensional stationary mode becomes unstable for a critical angle of attack $\alpha = 15.5^{\circ }$ which is much larger than in the experiments. A data-consistent RANS model is then proposed to reinvestigate the onset of these stall cells. Through an adjoint-based data-assimilation approach, several corrections in the turbulence model equation are identified to minimize the differences between assimilated and reference mean-velocity fields, the latter reference field being extracted from direct numerical simulations. Linear stability analysis around the assimilated mean flow obtained with the best correction is performed first using a perturbed eddy-viscosity approach which requires the linearization of both RANS and turbulence model equations. The three-dimensional stationary mode becomes unstable for angle $\alpha = 11^{\circ }$ which is in significantly better agreement with the experimental results. The interest of this perturbed eddy-viscosity approach is demonstrated by comparing with results of two frozen eddy-viscosity approaches that neglect the perturbation of the eddy viscosity. Both approaches predict the primary destabilization of a higher-wavenumber mode which is not experimentally observed. Uncertainties in the stability results are quantified through a sensitivity analysis of the stall cell mode's eigenvalue with respect to residual mean-flow velocity errors. The impact of the correction field on the results of stability analysis is finally assessed.

In recent years, the generalised quasilinear (GQL) approximation has been developed and its efficacy tested against purely quasilinear (QL) approximations. GQL systematically interpolates between QL and fully nonlinear dynamics by employing a generalised Reynolds decomposition. Here, we examine an exact statistical closure for the GQL equations on the doubly periodic $\beta$-plane. Closure is achieved at second order using a generalised cumulant approach which we term GCE2. GCE2 is shown to yield improved performance over statistical representations of purely QL dynamics (CE2) and thus enables direct statistical simulation of complex mean flows that do not entirely fall within the remit of pure QL theory. Despite the existence of an exact closure, GCE2 like CE2 admits the possibility of a rank instability that leads to differences with statistics obtained from GQL. Recognition of this instability is a necessary step before further progress can be made with the GCE2 statistical closure.

We study the formation of dust-free regions above hot horizontal surfaces of uniform temperature and propose relations for its height in the limit of small particle inertia and gravitational effects. By including particle inertia, thermophoretic, gravitational and viscous effects, we conduct Lagrangian simulations of particle dynamics in a natural convection boundary layer over a horizontal surface. Trajectory analysis of the particles inside the boundary layer on the surface reveals the existence of two separatrices originating from a saddle point, which form the boundary of the dust-free region. These separatrices for low gravitational effects follow the boundary layer thickness, but are of much lower height and also depend on the dimensionless thermophoretic number ($Th$) and Prandtl number ($Pr$). We obtain a relation for the dimensionless height of the dust-free region ($\eta _{df}$) as a function of $Pr$ and $Th$, for low dimensionless gravitational number ($Gn$); the numerical solution of this equation gives us the dust-free region height for any $Th$ and $Pr$. We then obtain scaling laws for $\eta _{df}$ using the boundary layer equations corresponding to the $Pr \gg 1$ and $Pr \ll 1$ cases; these scaling laws are shown to be valid respectively for $Pr>1$ and $Pr<1$, except in the large $\eta$ limit for $Pr>1$, where $\eta$ is the boundary layer similarity variable. We then obtain an empirical relation in this large $\eta$ limit using the numerical solutions of the boundary layer equations for the intermediate $Pr$ case to obtain scaling laws for dust-free region height for the whole range of $Pr \ll 1$ to $Pr \gg 1$.

Hydrodynamic interactions between swimming or flying organisms can lead to complex flows on the scale of the group. These emergent fluid dynamics are often more complex than a linear superposition of individual organism flows, especially at intermediate Reynolds numbers. This paper presents an approach to estimate the flow induced by multiple swimmer wakes in proximity using a semianalytical model that conserves mass and momentum in the aggregation. The key equations are derived analytically, while the implementation and solution of these equations are carried out numerically. This model was informed by and compared with empirical measurements of induced vertical migrations of brine shrimp, Artemia salina. The response of individual swimmers to ambient background flow and light intensity was evaluated. In addition, the time-resolved three-dimensional spatial configuration of the swimmers was measured using a recently developed laser scanning system. Numerical results using the model found that the induced flow at the front of the aggregation was insensitive to the presence of downstream swimmers, with the induced flow tending towards asymptotic beyond a threshold aggregation length. Closer swimmer spacing led to higher induced flow speeds, in some cases leading to model predictions of induced flow exceeding swimmer speeds required to maintain a stable spatial configuration. This result was reconciled by comparing two different models for the near-wake of each swimmer. The results demonstrate that aggregation-scale flows result from a complex, yet predictable interplay between individual organism wake structure and aggregation configuration and size.

The problem of axisymmetric supersonic laminar flow separation over a compression corner has not been considered within the framework of triple-deck theory for several decades, despite significant advances in both theoretical methods and numerical techniques. In this study, we revisit the problem considered by Gittler & Kluwick (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 179, 1987, pp. 469–487), using the numerical method of Ruban (Zhurnal Vychislitel'noi Matematiki i Matematicheskoi Fiziki, vol. 18, issue 5, 1978, pp. 1253–1265) and Cassel et al. (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 300, 1995, pp. 265–285), termed the Ruban–Cassel method (RCM). The solution shows good agreement with the results of Gittler & Kluwick (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 179, 1987, pp. 469–487) for a scale external radius of 1 and scale angles from 1 to 6. However, for scale angles above 6.8, a wave packet appears. This wave packet is similar to that reported by Cassel et al. (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 300, 1995, pp. 265–285) for two-dimensional supersonic flow. As the external scale radius increases (from 1 to 10), the axisymmetric solution converges towards the two-dimensional solution for equivalent scale angle values. For a scale external radius of 10, the wave packet appears at a scale angle of 3.8, compared with the value of 3.9 by Cassel et al. (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 300, 1995, pp. 265–285). Inspection of the velocity profiles reveals that inflection points, while ubiquitous in shear flow, do not seem to play a relevant role in the appearance of the wave packet for the axisymmetric flow. Axisymmetric effects become more important as the scale external radius decreases below 0.5. A larger scale angle is necessary to produce a flow structure equivalent to that of the two-dimensional case. For scale external radius 0.1, the pressure gradient is substantially diminished and the solution is devoid of a second shear-stress minimum.

Active flow control based on reinforcement learning has received much attention in recent years. Indeed, the requirement for substantial data for trial-and-error in reinforcement learning policies has posed a significant impediment to their practical application, which also serves as a limiting factor in the training of cross-case agents. This study proposes an in-context active flow control policy learning framework grounded in reinforcement learning data. A transformer-based policy improvement operator is set up to model the process of reinforcement learning as a causal sequence and autoregressively give actions with sufficiently long context on new unseen cases. In flow separation problems, this framework demonstrates the capability to successfully learn and apply efficient flow control strategies across various airfoil configurations. Compared with general reinforcement learning, this learning mode without the need for updating the network parameter has even higher efficiency. This study presents an effective novel technique in using a single transformer model to address the flow separation active flow control problem on different airfoils. Additionally, the study provides an innovative demonstration of incorporating reinforcement-learning-based flow control with aerodynamic shape optimization, leading to collective enhancement in performance. This method efficiently lessens the training burden of the new flow control policy during shape optimization, and opens up a promising avenue for interdisciplinary intelligent co-design of future vehicles.

This work investigates heat transport in rotating internally heated convection, for a horizontally periodic fluid between parallel plates under no-slip and isothermal boundary conditions. The main results are the proof of lower bounds on the mean temperature, $\overline {{\langle {T} \rangle }}$, and the heat flux out of the bottom boundary, ${\mathcal {F}}_B$, at infinite Prandtl number, where the Prandtl number is the non-dimensional ratio of viscous to thermal diffusion. The lower bounds are functions of the Rayleigh number quantifying the ratio of internal heating to diffusion and the Ekman number, $E$, which quantifies the ratio of viscous diffusion to rotation. We utilise two different estimates on the vertical velocity, $w$, one pointwise in the domain (Yan, J. Math. Phys., vol. 45(7), 2004, pp. 2718–2743) and the other an integral estimate over the domain (Constantin et al., Phys. D: Non. Phen., vol. 125, 1999, pp. 275–284), resulting in bounds valid for different regions of buoyancy-to-rotation dominated convection. Furthermore, we demonstrate that similar to rotating Rayleigh–Bénard convection, for small $E$, the critical Rayleigh number for the onset of convection asymptotically scales as $E^{-4/3}$.

An efficient compression scheme for modal flow analysis is proposed and validated on data sequences of compressible flow through a linear turbomachinery blade row. The key feature of the compression scheme is a minimal, user-defined distortion of the mutual distance of any snapshot pair in phase space. Through this imposed feature, the model reduction process preserves the temporal dynamics contained in the data sequence, while still decreasing the spatial complexity. The mathematical foundation of the scheme is the fast Johnson–Lindenstrauss transformation (FJLT) which uses randomized projections and a tree-based spectral transform to accomplish the embedding of a high-dimensional data sequence into a lower-dimensional latent space. The compression scheme is coupled to a proper orthogonal decomposition and dynamic mode decomposition analysis of flow through a linear blade row. The application to a complex flow-field sequence demonstrates the efficacy of the scheme, where compression rates of two orders of magnitude are achieved, while incurring very small relative errors in the dominant temporal dynamics. This FJLT technique should be attractive to a wide range of modal analyses of large-scale and multi-physics fluid motion.

Developed in this study is a theoretical description of squeeze-film lubrication systems that involve the flexural oscillation of a thin plate near a parallel wall. Such systems were discovered in recent experiments to produce load-bearing attractive forces that are a thousandfold stronger than those generated by rigid oscillators, which typically favour repulsion. Analyses of squeeze-film gas flow driven by a presumed plate deformation reproduce the observed magnification of attractive load capacity, but exhibit serious discrepancies with crucial aspects of the experimental measurements – most importantly, the precise distribution of air pressure along the film. The discrepancies are resolved in this study by accounting for the presence of two-way-coupled fluid–structure interactions whereby the undulations of the plate, modelled here with use of the classical Kirchhoff–Love equation, are affected non-negligibly by the evolving pressure, described by a modified Reynolds lubrication equation that accounts for compressibility. The resulting problem of elastohydrodynamic lubrication is solved with use of perturbation methods that exploit the limit of small oscillation amplitudes. The analysis ultimately provides an explicit expression specifying the attractive load capacity of a squeeze-film system as a function of relevant operating parameters – including, in particular, the amplitude and frequency of the localized excitation force exerted on the plate. The rudimentary theory derived here may be readily generalized to guide the analysis and development of a wide variety of emerging engineering systems that exploit the vibration-induced squeeze-film effect – such as wall-climbing soft robots and contactless grippers.

When they occur, azimuthal thermoacoustic oscillations can detrimentally affect the safe operation of gas turbines and aeroengines. We develop a real-time digital twin of azimuthal thermoacoustics of a hydrogen-based annular combustor. The digital twin seamlessly combines two sources of information about the system: (i) a physics-based low-order model; and (ii) raw and sparse experimental data from microphones, which contain both aleatoric noise and turbulent fluctuations. First, we derive a low-order thermoacoustic model for azimuthal instabilities, which is deterministic. Second, we propose a real-time data assimilation framework to infer the acoustic pressure, the physical parameters, and the model bias and measurement shift simultaneously. This is the bias-regularized ensemble Kalman filter, for which we find an analytical solution that solves the optimization problem. Third, we propose a reservoir computer, which infers both the model bias and measurement shift to close the assimilation equations. Fourth, we propose a real-time digital twin of the azimuthal thermoacoustic dynamics of a laboratory hydrogen-based annular combustor for a variety of equivalence ratios. We find that the real-time digital twin (i) autonomously predicts azimuthal dynamics, in contrast to bias-unregularized methods; (ii) uncovers the physical acoustic pressure from the raw data, i.e. it acts as a physics-based filter; (iii) is a time-varying parameter system, which generalizes existing models that have constant parameters, and capture only slow-varying variables. The digital twin generalizes to all equivalence ratios, which bridges the gap of existing models. This work opens new opportunities for real-time digital twinning of multi-physics problems.

Gas-encapsulated drops, much like antibubbles, are drops enclosed in a bubble within a liquid. They show potential as payload carriers in fluid transport and mixing techniques where sound waves can be leveraged to induce the collapse of the gas core and the subsequent release of the drop. Here, the interaction of millimetre-sized gas-encapsulated drops with impulsive laser-induced shock waves is investigated to gain fundamental insights into the release process. Experimental synchrotron X-ray phase contrast imaging, which allows the drop dynamics to be visualised inside the encapsulating bubble, is complemented by numerical simulations to study the intricate physics at play. Three drop dynamical release regimes are discovered, namely the drop impact, partial deposition and jet impact regimes. The regime type is mainly dependent on the shape of the bubble interface impacting the drop and the associated Weber and Reynolds numbers. The drop dynamics of the drop impact and partial deposition regimes show similarities with the canonical configuration of drops impacting flat liquid surfaces, whereas the jet impact regime resembles binary drop collisions, which allows existing scaling laws to be applied to describe the underlying processes. The release of the drop is investigated numerically. The time evolution of the drop dissemination within the surrounding liquid discloses enhanced mixing for dynamics involving high Weber and Reynolds numbers such as the drop impact and jet impact regimes.

Surface roughness significantly modifies the liquid film thickness entrained when dip coating a solid surface, particularly at low coating velocity. Using a homogenization approach, we present a predictive model for determining the liquid film thickness coated on a rough plate. A homogenized boundary condition at an equivalent flat surface is used to model the rough boundary, accounting for both flow through the rough texture layer, through an interface permeability term, and slip at the equivalent surface. While the slip term accounts for tangential velocity induced by viscous shear stress, accurately predicting the film thickness requires the interface permeability term to account for additional tangential flow driven by pressure gradients along the interface. We find that a greater degree of slip and interface permeability signifies less viscous stress that would promote deposition, thus reducing the amount of free film coated above the textures. The model is found to be in good agreement with experimental measurements, and requires no fitting parameters. Furthermore, our model may be applied to arbitrary periodic roughness patterns, opening the door to flexible characterization of surfaces found in natural and industrial coating processes.

The stability of Taylor–Couette flow modulated by oscillatory wall suction/blowing is investigated using Floquet linear stability analysis. The growth rate and stability mode are obtained by numerical calculation and asymptotic expansion. By calculating the effect of wall suction/blowing on the critical mode of steady Taylor–Couette flow, it is found that for most suction/blowing parameters, the maximum disturbance growth rate of the critical mode decreases and the flow becomes more stable. Only in a very small parameter region, wall suction/blowing increases the maximum disturbance growth rate of the critical mode, resulting in flow instability when the gap between the cylinders is large. The asymptotic results for small suction/blowing amplitudes indicate that the change of flow instability is mainly due to the steady correction of the basic flow induced by the modulation. A parametric study of the critical inner Reynolds number and the associated critical wavenumber is performed. It is found that the flow is stabilized by the modulation for most of the parameter ranges considered. For a wide gap between the cylinders, it is possible for the system to be mildly destabilized by weak suction/blowing.
