We consider steady two-dimensional flow in a two-layer fluid under the effects of gravity and surface tension. The upper fluid is bounded above by a free surface and the lower fluid is bounded below by a rigid bottom. We assume the fluids to be inviscid and the flow to be irrotational in each layer. Solitary wave solutions are found to the fully nonlinear problem using a boundary integral method based on the Cauchy integral formula. The behaviour of the solitary waves on the interface and free surface is determined by the density ratio of the two fluids, the fluid depth ratio, the Froude number and the Bond numbers. The dispersion relation obtained for the linearized equations demonstrates the presence of two modes: a ‘slow’ mode and a ‘fast’ mode. When a sufficiently strong surface tension is present only on the free surface, there is a region, or ‘gap’, between the two modes where no linear periodic waves are found. In-phase and out-of-phase solitary waves are computed in this spectral gap. Damped oscillations appear in the tails of the solitary waves when the value of the free-surface Bond number is either sufficiently small or large. The out-of-phase waves broaden as the Froude number tends towards a critical value. When surface tension is present on both surfaces, out-of-phase solitary waves are computed. Damped oscillations occur in the tails of the waves when the interfacial Bond number is sufficiently small. Oppositely oriented solitary waves are shown to coexist for identical parameter values.

Simulations of a cylinder undergoing externally controlled sinusoidal oscillations in the free stream direction have been performed. The frequency of oscillation was kept equal to the vortex shedding frequency from a fixed cylinder, while the amplitude of oscillation was varied, and the response of the flow measured. With varying amplitude, a rich series of dynamic responses was recorded. With increasing amplitude, these states included wakes similar to the Kármán vortex street, quasiperiodic oscillations interleaved with regions of synchronized periodicity (periodic on multiple oscillation cycles), a period-doubled state and chaotic oscillations. It is hypothesized that, for low to moderate amplitudes, the wake dynamics are controlled by vortex shedding at a global frequency, modified by the oscillation. This vortex shedding is frequency modulated by the driven oscillation and amplitude modulated by vortex interaction. Data are presented to support this hypothesis.

The linear stability of the compressible flow in a streamwise corner is studied. The steady laminar mean flow is obtained as a solution to the parabolized Navier–Stokes equations with the asymptotic cross-flow velocity enforced on the far-field boundaries via a sponge region and was found to be in good agreement with the corresponding self-similar solution. The eigenvalue problem of linear stability theory is solved for base flows at three different Mach numbers representing the incompressible limit (), the subsonic () and the supersonic () velocity regime. Particular attention is given to the subject of wave obliqueness. Owing to the break of periodicity by the opposing wall the exact spanwise wavenumbers and associated phase angles resolved in the computational domain are not known a priori. We address this problem by imposing different phase angles on the far-field boundaries to obtain the critical values of the Reynolds number, streamwise wavenumber and spanwise wavenumber from a three-dimensional solution space. The stability characteristics of the different types of modes present in the spectrum are discussed. An inviscid corner mode with odd-symmetry not present in the subsonic regime and with a higher amplification rate than its symmetric counterpart is identified in the supersonic case. Acoustic modes are found in an enlarged computational domain and categorized with respect to speed, symmetry and wall-boundedness, among them an acoustic corner mode.

A new scaling parameter is developed for the circulation shed by a rigid, rectangular panel pitching periodically about its leading edge. This parameter is the product of a kinematic and a geometric component. The kinematic component describes the relationship between the mean vorticity flux from the panel surface and the panel motion. The geometric component depends on the ratio of pitching amplitude to the span of the panel. The kinematic component is developed based on the connection between the surface pressure distribution and the resulting surface vorticity flux, which are supported in a stroke-averaged sense by pressure measurements on the surface of the panel. The parameter gives a robust scaling for the total spanwise circulation shed in a half-cycle by the panel. It provides a useful predictive tool, in that it can be either complementary to the formation number or provide an alternative scaling parameter when vortex saturation and pinch-off do not occur.
