Stokes's linearized equations of motion are used to calculate the flow field generated by a spheroid executing axial translatory oscillations in an infinite, otherwise still, incompressible, viscous fluid. The flow field, expressed in terms of spheroidal wave functions of order one, is used to develop general expressions for the drag on oscillating prolate and oblate spheroids. Formulae for the approximate drag, useful in making calculations, are obtained for small values of an oscillation parameter. These formulae reduce to the Stokes result in the limit when the spheroid becomes a sphere and the steady-state drag for a spheroid as the frequency of oscillation becomes zero. The fluid forces on spheroids of various shapes are compared graphically. The approximate formulae for the drag are integrated over all frequencies to obtain formulae for the drag on spheroids executing general axial translatory accelerations. The fluid resistance on the spheroid is expressed as the sum of an added mass effect, a steady-state drag and an effect due to the history of the motion. A table of added mass, viscous and history coefficients is given.

The paper provides a model of turbulence which effects closure through approximated transport equations for the Reynolds stress tensor $\overline{u_iu_j}$ and for the turbulence energy-dissipation rate ε. In its most general form the model thus entails the solution of seven transport equations for turbulence quantities but contains only six constants to be determined by experiment. It is demonstrated that the proposed approximation to the pressure-rate-of-strain correlations leads to satisfactory predictions of the component stress levels in plane homogeneous turbulence, including the non-equality of the lateral and transverse normal-stress components.

For boundary-layer flows a simpler version of the model is derived wherein transport equations are solved only for the shear stress $-\overline{u_1u_2}$ the turbulence energy κ and ε. This model has been incorporated in the numerical solution procedure of Patankar & Spalding (1970) and applied to the prediction of a number of boundary-layer flows including examples of flow remote from walls, those developing along one wall and those confined within ducts. Three of the flows are strongly asymmetric with respect to the surface of zero shear stress and here the turbulent shear stress does not vanish where the mean rate of strain goes to zero. In most cases the predicted profiles and other quantities accord with the data within the probable accuracy of the measurements.

The stability of the laminar co-current flow of two fluids, oil and water, in a rectangular channel was investigated experimentally, with and without artificial excitation. For the ratio of viscosity explored, only the disturbances in water grew in the beginning stages of transition to turbulence. The critical water Reynolds number, based upon the hydraulic diameter of the channel and the superficial velocity defined by the ratio of flow rate of water to total cross-sectional area of the channel, was found to be 2300. The behaviour of damped and growing shear waves in water was examined in detail using artificial excitation and briefly compared with that observed in Part 1. Mean flow profiles, the amplitude distribution of disturbances in water, the amplification rate, wave speed and wavenumbers were obtained. A neutral stability boundary in the wave-number, water Reynolds number plane was also obtained experimentally.

It was found that in natural transition the interfacial mode was not excited. The first appearance of interfacial waves was actually a manifestation of the shear waves in water. The role of the interface in the transition range from laminar to turbulent flow in water was to introduce and enhance spanwise oscillation in the water phase and to hasten the process of breakdown for growing disturbances.

The weakly nonlinear, two-dimensional problem for the disturbance due to a slender obstacle in a uniformly stratified, Boussinesq fluid moving past the obstacle with constant basic horizontal velocity U, is considered up to second order in the amplitude ε of the disturbance. Analogous rotating problems are also treated. Particular attention is given to calculating explicitly the columnar-disturbance strengths upstream and downstream of the obstacle, both in the stratified and in the rotating problems, with a view to discussing the truth or otherwise of Long's hypothesis (LH).

Whether or not columnar disturbances are found far upstream, violating LH, depends, interalia, on whether or not the flow is externally bounded by rigid horizontal planes (or by a tube or annulus, in the rotating problem), and on whether the problem is made determinate by means of an ‘inviscid transient’ formulation, or by means of a ‘viscous’ one.

The inviscid, transient, bounded problem, for time-development of lee waves from a state of no initial disturbance, always exhibits columnar disturbances oforder ε2 somewhere in the fluid. They are generated, not near the obstacle, but in the ‘tails’ or transient terminal zones of the lee-wave trains. The columnar-disturbance strengths are largely independent of how the flow is set up from an initially undisturbed state. I n all but one instance the effect is non-zero far up-stream. The exception is the singly-subcritical stratified (or narrow-gap rotating) case, in which the excitation has modal structure sin(2z), the fluid region being 0 [les ] z [les ] π in this case the only columnar disturbance that can penetrate up-stream has structure sinz and so is not excited.

A completely different result holds for ‘viscous’ formulations for unseparated, bounded régimes (with steady lee waves spatially attenuated by effects of small molecular diffusion). The strengths of all columnar disturbances, upstream and downstream, vanish in the limit of small diffusivity.

In the inviscid, transient, unbounded problem, the upstream influence is, likewise, evanescent, being O(ε2t−2) as time t → ∞.

The basic expansion in powers of ε will be invalid for times ∝ ε−1 or greater, because of resonant-interactive instability of the lee waves.

Separating and reattaching flows in a two-dimensional compression corner were investigated experimentally at a Mach number of 7·0 and Reynolds numbers (based on the distance from the leading edge to the corner) of 4·75 × 106, 9·51 × 106 and 1·55 × 107. Heat-transfer measurements and Pitot traverses in the upstream boundary layer showed that the boundary layer had become fully turbulent at the start of the interactions. Increases in the Reynolds number gave increases in the length of separated shear layers and decreases in the corner angle required for incipient, separation. The reattachment pressure coefficients gave good agreement with the criterion of Batham (1969).

Super-Alfvénic supersonic aligned magnetogasdynamic flow over a cone of finite semi-apex angle, with an attached fast shock wave, is solved numerically. We obtain ‘almond curves’ in the plane of magnetic induction vector variation, analogous to Busemann's ‘apple curves’ for supersonic cone flows, to describe the flow field near the cone. Total surface pressure coefficients, current and vorticity distributions are presented. A closed-form solution of the flow is obtained when a switch-on shock occurs.

The tearing of a pressure-sensitive (‘tacky’) adhesive is examined. Two flexible strips bonded by a layer of adhesive are passed between adjacent cylindrical guides and peeled apart, causing the adhesive layer to separate into two about a surface tension membrane. Treating the adhesive as a Newtonian viscous fluid, the slow-flow problem is solved by an iterative numerical scheme in which the surface tension membrane boundary in the vicinity of the region of separation is approximated by a shear-free boundary given by a sixth-degree polynomial expression. The energy dissipation rate, a measure of the ‘strength’ of the adhesive, is obtained from the flow.

The solution method is also used to determine the similar flow induced by two counter-rotating rollers partially immersed in a large bath of fluid. The results are in fairly good agreement with available experimental data. The symmetrical eddies observed under the lowest point of the surface tension membrane in the stable flow between the rollers are reproduced in the solution, proving that fluid inertia effects are not essential for their existence.

The dispersion considered consists of a large number of identical small rigid spheres with random positions which are falling through Newtonian fluid under gravity. The volume fraction of the spheres (c) is small compared with unity. The dispersion is statistically homogeneous, and the axes of reference are chosen so that the mean volume flux across any stationary surface is zero. The problem is to determine the mean value of the velocity of a sphere (U). In §3 there is described a systematic and rigorous procedure which overcomes the familiar difficulty presented by the occurrence of divergent integrals, essentially by the choice of a quantity V whose mean value can be found exactly and which has the same long-range dependence on the position of a second sphere as U so that the mean of U – V can be expressed in terms of an absolutely convergent integral. The result is that, correct to order c, the mean value of U is U0(1 – 6.55 c), where U0, is the velocity of a single sphere in unbounded fluid. The only assumption made in the calculation is that the centres of spheres in the dispersion take with equal probability all positions such that no two spheres overlap; arguments are given in support of this assumption, which is expected to be valid only when the spheres are identical. Calculations which assume a simple regular arrangement of the spheres or which adopt a cell model of the hydrodynamic interactions give the quite different result that the change in the mean speed of fall is proportional to $c^{\frac{1}{3}}$, for reasons which are made clear.

The general procedure described here is expected to be applicable to other problems concerned with the effect of particle interactions on the average properties of dispersions with small volume fraction of the particles.

A two-dimensional, unsteady, transonic, irrotational, inviscid flow of a perfect gas with constant specific heats is considered. The analysis involves perturbations from a uniform sonic isentropic flow. The governing perturbation potential equations are derived for various orders of the ratio of the characteristic time associated with a temporal flow disturbance to the time taken by a sonic disturbance to traverse the transonicregime. The case where this ratio is large compared to one is studied in detail. A similarity solution involving an arbitrary function of time is found and it is shown that this solution corresponds to unsteady chimel flows with either stationary or time-varying wall shapes. Numerical computations are presented showing the temporal changes in flow structure as a disturbance dies out exponentially for the following typical nozzle flows: simple accelerating (Meyer) flow and flow with supersonic pockets (Taylor and limiting Taylor flow).

The purpose of this paper is to consider theoretically how the homogeneous suction from a slightly concave permeable wall will affect the instability of the laminar boundary layer to the onset of longitudinal vortices. The curves of neutral stability and of several growth factors of the vortices are given. The critical values of the Görtler parameter Gc, and the wavenumber σc, based on the momentum thickness of the boundary layer, are found: Gc = 1·17 and σc = 0·22.

The extended Cowley–Imai analogy is derived and employed to obtain explicit equations which allow transcription of gasdynamic perturbation solutions into magnetogasdynamic solutions. The transcription is written down to second order for axisymmetric super-Alfvénic flows of a perfect gas at arbitrary Mach numbers. Speed and field perturbations are shown to vanish in the Alfvénic limit for such solutions, although this is not a property of the exact solution. Van Dyke's supersonic-cone-flow solution is then transcribed and compared with the exact numerical solution over the range 1 < A∞, ≥ 20, 1 < M∞, ≥ 20 for a cone of 5° semi-apex angle, showing excellent agreement which improves with increasing field strength. The large-cone-angle behaviour of the solution is also quite good for the upstream state A∞ = M∞ = 2·0.

The paper presents a comprehensive examination of self-similar blast waves with respect to two parameters, one describing the front velocity and the other the variation of the ambient density immediately ahead of the front. All possible front trajectories are taken into account, including limiting cases of the exponential and logarithmic form. The structure of the waves is analysed by means of a phase plane defined in terms of two reduced co-ordinates F ≡ (t/rμ) u and Z ≡ [(t/rμ)a]2, where t and r are the independent (time and space) variables, μ ≡ d ln rn/d Intn the subscript n denoting the co-ordinates of the front, and u and a are, respectively, the particle velocity and the speed of sound. Loci of extrema of the integral curves in the phase plane are traced and loci of singularities are determined on the basis of their intersections. Boundary conditions are introduced for the case when the medium into which the waves propagate is at rest. Representative solutions, pertaining to all the possible cases of blast waves bounded by shock fronts propagating into an atmosphere of uniform density, are obtained by evaluating the integral curves and determining the corresponding profiles of the gasdynamic parameters. Particular examples of integral curves for waves bounded by detonations are given and all the degenerate solutions, corresponding to cases where the integral curve is reduced to a point, are delineated.

The effect of rotary Brownian motion on the rheology of a dilute suspension of rigid spheroids in shear flow is considered for various limiting cases of the particle aspect ratio r and dimensionless shear rate γ/D. As a preliminary the probability distribution function is calculated for the orientation of a single, axisymmetric particle in steady shear flow, assuming small particle Reynolds number. The result for the case of weak-shear flows, γ/D [Lt ] 1, has been known for many years. After briefly reviewing this limiting case, we present expressions for the case of strong shear where (r3 + r−3) [Lt ] γ/D, and for an intermediate regime relevant for extreme aspect ratios where 1 [Lt ] γ/D [Lt ] (r3 + r−3). The bulk stress is then calculated for these cases, as well as the case of nearly spherical particles r ∼ 1, which has not hitherto been discussed in detail. Various non-Newtonian features of the suspension rheology are discussed in terms of prior continuum mechanical and experimental results.

A class of laminar rotating free-convective flows over a horizontal boundary in the presence of a strong magnetic field is investigated. The range of applicability of boundary-layer approximations is obtained, as well as a class of similarity solutions valid within a domain of multi-parameter space.

The effects of fluid injection on the structure of an initially fully developed, low Reynolds number, turbulent pipe flow have been studied by means of a hot-film anemometer. Measurements were made of the axial turbulence intensity field and of the time-mean streamwise velocity distribution, both in the porous-walled pipe and in the solid-walled hydrodynamic development section. Oscilloscope traces showing the timewise pattern of the local velocity fluctuations were also monitored. The Reynolds number of the air flow at the inlet of the porous pipe was varied from 3090 to 6350, and the Reynolds number of the injected air ranged from 60 to 160.

Near the tube wall, the initial effect of injection is a significant reduction of the axial turbulence level and an increase in the thickness of the viscous and buffer layers. The degree by which turbulence is reduced in this region is more or less proportional to the ratio of the injection to entrance Reynolds numbers. In the core region of the flow, which is centred about the tube axis, there is also an initial reduction in the magnitude of the axial component of turbulence which is thought to be due to injection-induced acceleration of the flow. There is also an annular region, which separates the wall and core regions, in which the turbulence intensity initially increases. In the downstream portion of the porous tube the entire flow undergoes a re-transition to fully developed turbulence.

The hydrodynamic stability of plane Poiseuille flow of second—order fluids to finite amplitude disturbances is examined using the method of Stuart, and Watson as extended by Reynolds & Potter. For slightly non-Newtonian fluids subcritical instabilities are predicted. No supercritical equilibrium states are expected if the entire spectrum of disturbance wavelengths is present. Possible implications with respect to the Toms phenomenon are discussed.

An experimental and theoretical investigation has been carried out to determine the effect of thermal radiation on a natural convection boundary layer formed adjacent to a vertical flat surface with uniform heat flux input. In the experiment, the gases air, argon and ammonia were used as the fluid medium, thus permitting the observation of radiation effects in non-abosrbing and absorbing media. Experimental results were obtained for three different wall emittances at ambient pressures ranging from 2 to 8 atmospheres in air and argon and from 2 to 7 atmospheres in ammonia. An interferometer was used to measure the temperature distributions in the boundary layer and to evaluate the conductive (convective) heat flux from the surface into the fluid medium. The experimental temperature distributions and heat-transfer results obtained in ammonia gas are compared to the predictions of a perturbation analysis developed by the present writers. General agreement between theory and experiment is found. The presence of a radiating gas is seen to increase the convective heat transfer by as much as 40 % for the conditions of the present experiments. The results further indicate that the temperature distributions and wall-temperature gradients are strongly affected by both variations in the surface emittance and variations in gaseous emission and absorption. For non-absorbing gases, the experimental results are found to be in general agreement with existing theory. It is also shown that the experimental temperature distributions agree very well with theoretical predictions obtained by treating the convection and radiation processes as independent and superimposed.

The interaction of nonlinear gravity waves and steady non-uniform currents is studied using the averaged Lagrangian method due to Whitham (1965a,b). The results are compared with the essentially linear theory of Longuet-Higgins & Stewart (1961, 1964) for three specific problems: waves on a stream (U(x), 0) with variations in the stream balanced by upwelling from below or inflow from the sides, and waves on a shear flow (0, V(x)). It appears that rates of growth of large waves are less than those predicted by linear theory and that the energy density can sometimes decrease when the wave height and steepness are still increasing. The final section discusses the form of the energy equation in terms of the Lagrangian.

The importance of fluctuating turbulent stresses in the flow over a wave is examined. It is shown that anisotropic stresses, which are most likely to be turbulent Reynolds stresses, are essential to the process of energy flow to the wave. Two fundamentally different methods of predicting fluctuating turbulent Reynolds stresses are examined. One method makes use of a phenomenological closure of the conservation equation for the turbulent Reynolds stresses and is similar to the turbulent boundary-layer calculation scheme of Bradshaw, Ferriss & Atwell (1967). The second method is based on the assumption that the turbulent stresses are determined by the recent history of velocity shear experienced by a fluid parcel and results in a viscoelastic constitutive relation for the turbulence; in the limit of shortest’ memory’ this relation becomes the eddy viscosity model proposed by Hussain & Reynolds (1970). Comparison of predicted and measured values of surface pressure indicates that the eddy viscoelasticity model can explain measured pressure distributions but the comparison is not conclusive. Suggestions for further measurements are made.

Single inclined hot wires and X-wires are calibrated directly for absolute turbulence intensity measurements by oscillating the wire probe sinusoidally with accurately known motion in a steady stream. The usual static method of calibration shows serious discrepancies and uncertainties when compared with this new procedure. The new method also provides a check on the small perturbation linearity of inclined wires.
