Turbulent flow separation induced by a protuberance on one of the walls of an otherwise planar channel is investigated using direct numerical simulations. Different bulge geometries and Reynolds numbers – with the highest friction Reynolds number simulation reaching a peak of $Re_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D70F}}=900$ – are addressed to understand the effect of the wall curvature and of the Reynolds number on the dynamics of the recirculating bubble behind the bump. Global quantities reveal that most of the drag is due to the form contribution, whilst the friction contribution does not change appreciably with respect to an equivalent planar channel flow. The size and position of the separation bubble strongly depends on the bump shape and the Reynolds number. The most bluff geometry has a larger recirculation region, whilst the Reynolds number increase results in a smaller recirculation bubble and a shear layer more attached to the bump. The position of the reattachment point only depends on the Reynolds number, in agreement with experimental data available in the literature. Both the mean and the turbulent kinetic energy equations are addressed in such non-homogeneous conditions revealing a non-trivial behaviour of the energy fluxes. The energy introduced by the pressure drop follows two routes: part of it is transferred towards the walls to be dissipated and part feeds the turbulent production hence the velocity fluctuations in the separating shear layer. Spatial energy fluxes transfer the kinetic energy into the recirculation bubble and downstream near the wall where it is ultimately dissipated. Consistently, anisotropy concentrates at small scales near the walls irrespective of the value of the Reynolds number. In the bulk flow and in the recirculation bubble, isotropy is restored at small scales and the isotropy recovery rate is controlled by the Reynolds number. Anisotropy invariant maps are presented, showing the difficulty in developing suitable turbulence models to predict separated turbulent flow dynamics. Results shed light on the processes of production, transfer and dissipation of energy in this relatively complex turbulent flow where non-homogeneous effects overwhelm the classical picture of wall-bounded turbulent flows which typically exploits streamwise homogeneity.

Fluid residence time is a key concept in the understanding and design of chemically reacting flows. In order to investigate how turbulent mixing affects the residence time distribution within a flow, this study examines statistics of fluid residence time from a direct numerical simulation (DNS) of a statistically stationary turbulent round jet with a jet Reynolds number of 7290. The residence time distribution in the flow is characterised by solving transport equations for the residence time of the jet fluid and for the jet fluid mass fraction. The product of the jet fluid residence time and the jet fluid mass fraction, referred to as the mass-weighted stream age, gives a quantity that has stationary statistics in the turbulent jet. Based on the observation that the statistics of the mass fraction and velocity are self-similar downstream of an initial development region, the transport equation for the jet fluid residence time is used to derive a model describing a self-similar profile for the mean of the mass-weighted stream age. The self-similar profile predicted is dependent on, but different from, the self-similar profiles for the mass fraction and the axial velocity. The DNS data confirm that the first four moments and the shape of the one-point probability density function of mass-weighted stream age are indeed self-similar, and that the model derived for the mean mass-weighted stream-age profile provides a useful approximation. Using the self-similar form of the moments and probability density functions presented it is therefore possible to estimate the local residence time distribution in a wide range of practical situations in which fluid is introduced by a high-Reynolds-number jet of fluid.

We derive a new expression for the entrainment coefficient in a turbulent plume using an equation for the squared mean buoyancy. Consistency of the resulting expression with previous relations for the entrainment coefficient implies that the turbulent Prandtl number in a pure plume is equal to 3/5 when the mean profiles of velocity and buoyancy have a Gaussian form of equal width. Entrainment can be understood in terms of the volume flux, the production of turbulence kinetic energy or the production of scalar variance for either active or passive variables. The equivalence of these points of view indicates how the entrainment coefficient and the turbulent Prandtl and Schmidt numbers depend on the Richardson number of the flow, the ambient stratification and the relative widths of the velocity and scalar profiles. The general framework is valid for self-similar plumes, which are characterised by a power-law scaling. For jets and pure plumes it is shown that the derived relations are in reasonably good agreement with results from direct numerical simulations and experiments.

We consider the full three-dimensional dynamics of a thin falling liquid film on a flat plate inclined at some non-zero angle to the horizontal. In addition to gravitational effects, the flow is driven by an electric field which is normal to the substrate far from the flow. This extends the work of Tseluiko & Papageorgiou (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 556, 2006b, pp. 361–386) by including transverse dynamics. We study both the cases of overlying and hanging films, where the liquid lies above or below the substrate, respectively. Starting with the Navier–Stokes equations coupled with electrostatics, a fully nonlinear two-dimensional Benney equation for the interfacial dynamics is derived, valid for waves that are long compared to the film thickness. The weakly nonlinear evolution is governed by a Kuramoto–Sivashinsky equation with a non-local term due to the electric field effect. The electric field term is linearly destabilising and produces growth rates proportional to $|\unicode[STIX]{x1D743}|^{3}$, where $\unicode[STIX]{x1D743}$ is the wavenumber vector of the perturbations. It is found that transverse gravitational instabilities are always present for hanging films, and this leads to unboundedness of nonlinear solutions even in the absence of electric fields – this is due to the anisotropy of the nonlinearity. For overlying films and a restriction on the strength of the electric field, the equation is well-posed in the sense that it possesses bounded solutions. This two-dimensional equation is studied numerically for the case of periodic boundary conditions in order to assess the effects of inertia, electric field strength and the size of the periodic domain. Rich dynamical behaviours are observed and reported. For subcritical Reynolds number flows, a sufficiently strong electric field can promote non-trivial dynamics for some choices of domain size, leading to fully two-dimensional evolutions of the interface. We also observe two-dimensional spatiotemporal chaos on sufficiently large domains. For supercritical flows, such two-dimensional chaotic dynamics emerges in the absence of a field, and its presence enhances the amplitude of the fluctuations and broadens their spectrum.

The apparent gas permeability of a porous medium is an important parameter in the prediction of unconventional gas production, which was first investigated systematically by Klinkenberg in 1941 and found to increase with the reciprocal mean gas pressure (or equivalently, the Knudsen number). Although the underlying rarefaction effects are well known, the reason that the correction factor in Klinkenberg’s famous equation decreases when the Knudsen number increases has not been fully understood. Most of the studies idealize the porous medium as a bundle of straight cylindrical tubes; however, according to the gas kinetic theory, this only results in an increase of the correction factor with the Knudsen number, which clearly contradicts Klinkenberg’s experimental observations. Here, by solving the Bhatnagar–Gross–Krook equation in simplified (but not simple) porous media, we identify, for the first time, two key factors that can explain Klinkenberg’s experimental results: the tortuous flow path and the non-unitary tangential momentum accommodation coefficient for the gas–surface interaction. Moreover, we find that Klinkenberg’s results can only be observed when the ratio between the apparent and intrinsic permeabilities is ${\lesssim}30$; at large ratios (or Knudsen numbers) the correction factor increases with the Knudsen number. Our numerical results could also serve as benchmarking cases to assess the accuracy of macroscopic models and/or numerical schemes for the modelling/simulation of rarefied gas flows in complex geometries over a wide range of gas rarefaction. Specifically, we point out that the Navier–Stokes equations with the first-order velocity-slip boundary condition are often misused to predict the apparent gas permeability of the porous medium; that is, any nonlinear dependence of the apparent gas permeability with the Knudsen number, predicted from the Navier–Stokes equations, is not reliable. Worse still, for some types of gas–surface interactions, even the ‘filtered’ linear dependence of the apparent gas permeability with the Knudsen number is of no practical use since, compared to the numerical solution of the Bhatnagar–Gross–Krook equation, it is only accurate when the ratio between the apparent and intrinsic permeabilities is ${\lesssim}1.5$.

This paper discusses the evolution of coastal currents by considering, relative to a rotating frame, the flow development when buoyant fluid is injected into a quiescent fluid bounded by a solid wall. The initial rapid response is determined by the Coriolis force–pressure gradient balance with a Kelvin wave propagating rapidly, at the long-wave speed, with the bounding wall to its right (for positive rotation). However fluid columns can stretch or squash on ejection from coastal outflows so that the ejected fluid gains positive or negative relative vorticity. Depending on its sign, the image in the solid wall of this vorticity can reinforce or oppose the zero potential-vorticity-anomaly (PVa) current set up by the Kelvin wave (KW). This paper presents a simple, fully nonlinear, dispersive, quasi-geostrophic model to discuss the form of coastal outflows as the relative strength of vortex to KW driving is varied. The model retains sufficient physics to capture both effects at finite amplitude and thus the essential nonlinearity of the flow, but is sufficiently simple so as to allow highly accurate numerical integration of the full problem and also explicit, fully nonlinear solutions for the evolution of a uniform PVa outflow in the hydraulic limit. Outflow evolutions are shown to depend strongly on the sign of the PVa of the expelled fluid, which determines whether the vortex and KW driving are reinforcing or opposing, and on the ratio of the internal Rossby radius to the vortex-source scale, $|V_{0}/D^{2}\unicode[STIX]{x1D6F1}_{0}|^{1/2}$, of the flow (where $D$ measures the outflow depth, $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6F1}_{0}$ the PVa of the outflow and $V_{0}$ the volume flux of the outflow), which measures the relative strengths of the two drivers. Comparison of the explicit hydraulic solutions with the numerical integrations shows that the analytical solutions predict the flow development well with differences ascribable to dispersive Rossby waves on the current boundary and changes in the source region captured by the full equations but not present in the hydraulic solutions.

Integral expressions for the first-order correction to the effective slip length for longitudinal flows over a unidirectional superhydrophobic surface with rectangular grooves are determined under the assumptions that the meniscus curvature is small and the viscosity contrast between the groove-trapped subphase gas and the working fluid is significant. Both pressure-driven channel flows and semi-infinite shear flows are considered. Reciprocity ideas, based on use of Green’s second identity, provide the integral expressions with integrands dependent on known flat-meniscus solutions found by Philip (Z. Angew. Math. Phys., vol. 23, 1972, pp. 353–372). The results extend earlier work by Sbragaglia & Prosperetti (Phys. Fluids, vol. 19, 2007, 043603) on how weak meniscus curvature affects hydrodynamic slip. In particular, we derive a new integral expression for the first-order slip length correction due to weak meniscus curvature.

Direct numerical simulations of turbulent boundary layers with a nominal free-stream Mach number of $6$ and a Reynolds number of $Re_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D70F}}\approx 450$ are conducted at a wall-to-recovery temperature ratio of $T_{w}/T_{r}=0.25$ and compared with a previous database for $T_{w}/T_{r}=0.76$ in order to investigate pressure fluctuations and their dependence on wall temperature. The wall-temperature dependence of widely used velocity and temperature scaling laws for high-speed turbulent boundary layers is consistent with previous studies. The near-wall pressure-fluctuation intensities are dramatically modified by wall-temperature conditions. At different wall temperatures, the variation of pressure-fluctuation intensities as a function of wall-normal distance is dramatically modified in the near-wall region but remains almost intact away from the wall. Wall cooling also has a strong effect on the frequency spectrum of wall-pressure fluctuations, resulting in a higher dominant frequency and a sharper spectrum peak with a faster roll-off at both the high- and low-frequency ends. The effect of wall cooling on the free-stream noise spectrum can be largely accounted for by the associated changes in boundary-layer velocity and length scales. The pressure structures within the boundary layer and in the free stream evolve less rapidly as the wall temperature decreases, resulting in an increase in the decorrelation length of coherent pressure structures for the colder-wall case. The pressure structures propagate with similar speeds for both wall temperatures. Due to wall cooling, the generated pressure disturbances undergo less refraction before they are radiated to the free stream, resulting in a slightly steeper radiation wave front in the free stream. Acoustic sources are largely concentrated in the near-wall region; wall cooling most significantly influences the nonlinear (slow) component of the acoustic source term by enhancing dilatational fluctuations in the viscous sublayer while damping vortical fluctuations in the buffer and log layers.

Induction of flow is commonly used to control the migration of a microswimmer in a confined system such as a microchannel. The motion of a swimmer, in general, is governed by nonlinear equations due to non-trivial hydrodynamic interactions between the flow and the swimmer near a wall. This paper derives analytical expressions for the equations of motion governing a circular treadmilling swimmer in simple shear near a no-slip wall by combining the reciprocal theorem for Stokes flow with an exact solution for the dragging problem of a cylinder near a wall. We demonstrate that the reduced dynamical system possesses a Hamiltonian structure, which we use to show that the swimmer cannot migrate stably at a constant distance from a wall but only exhibit periodic oscillatory motion along the wall, or to escape from it. A treadmilling swimmer with the lowest two treadmilling modes is investigated in detail by means of a bifurcation analysis of the reduced dynamical system. It is found that the swimming direction of oscillatory motion is clarified by the sign of the Hamiltonian in the absence of flow, and that the induction of the flow suppresses upstream migration but aligns swimmer orientations in downstream migration. These results could inform strategies for the transport and control of micro-organisms and micromachines.

A droplet may ‘walk’ across the surface of a vertically vibrating bath of the same fluid, due to the propulsive interaction with its wave field. This hydrodynamic pilot-wave system exhibits many dynamics previously believed to exist only in the quantum realm. Starting from first principles, we derive a discrete-time fluid model, whereby the bath–droplet interactions are modelled as instantaneous. By analysing the stability of the fixed points of the system, we explain the dynamics of a walking droplet and capture the quantisations for multiple-droplet interactions. Circular orbits in a harmonic potential are studied, and a double quantisation of chaotic trajectories is obtained through systematic statistical analysis.

Flow past a NACA 65 blade at chord-based Reynolds number 138 500 is studied using stability analysis, generalized (spatially weighted) transient growth analysis and direct numerical simulations (DNS). The mechanisms of transition on various sections of the blade observed in previous work by Zaki et al. (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 665, 2010, pp. 57–98) are examined, with a focus on the pressure side around the leading edge. In this region, the linearly most energetic perturbation has spanwise wavenumber $40\unicode[STIX]{x03C0}$ (five boundary-layer thicknesses) and is tilted against the mean shear to take advantage of the Orr mechanism. In a DNS, the nonlinear development of this optimal perturbation induces $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6EC}$ structures, which are further stretched to hairpin vortices before breaking down to turbulence. At higher spanwise wavenumber, e.g. $120\unicode[STIX]{x03C0}$, a free-stream optimal perturbation is obtained upstream of the leading edge, in the form of streamwise vortices. During its nonlinear evolution, this optimal perturbation tilts the mean shear and generates spanwise periodic high- and low-speed streaks. Then through a nonlinear lift-up mechanism, the low-speed streaks are lifted above the high-speed ones. This layout of streaks generates a mean shear with two inflectional points and activates secondary instabilities, namely inner and outer instabilities previously reported in the literature.

We present a Lagrangian analysis of nonlinear surface waves propagating zonally on a zonal current in the presence of the Earth’s rotation that shows the existence of two modes of wave motion. The first, ‘fast’ mode, one with wavelengths commonly found for wind waves and swell in the ocean, represents the wave–current interaction counterpart of the rotationally modified Gerstner waves found first by Pollard (J. Geophys. Res., vol. 75, 1970, pp. 5895–5898) that quite closely resemble Stokes waves. The second, slower, mode has a period nearly equal to the inertial period and has a small vertical scale such that very long, e.g. $O(10^{4}~\text{km})$ wavelength, waves have velocities etc. that decay exponentially from the free surface over a scale of $O(10~\text{m})$ that is proportional to the strength of the mean current. In both cases, the particle trajectories are closed in a frame of reference moving with the mean current, with particle motions in the second mode describing inertial circles. Given that the linear analysis of the governing Eulerian equations only captures the fast mode, the slow mode is a fundamentally nonlinear phenomenon in which very small free surface deflections are manifestations of an energetic current.

Oscillating microbubbles can be used as microscopic agents. Using external acoustic fields they are able to set the surrounding fluid into motion, erode surfaces and even to carry particles attached to their interfaces. Although the acoustic streaming flow that the bubble generates in its vicinity has been often observed, it has never been measured and quantitatively compared with the available theoretical models. The scarcity of quantitative data is partially due to the strong three-dimensional character of bubble-induced streaming flows, which demands advanced velocimetry techniques. In this work, we present quantitative measurements of the flow generated by single and pairs of acoustically excited sessile microbubbles using a three-dimensional particle tracking technique. Using this novel experimental approach we are able to obtain the bubble’s resonant oscillating frequency, study the boundaries of the linear oscillation regime, give predictions on the flow strength and the shear in the surrounding surface and study the flow and the stability of a two-bubble system. Our results show that velocimetry techniques are a suitable tool to make diagnostics on the dynamics of acoustically excited microbubbles.

We consider the influence of a smooth three-dimensional (3-D) indentation on the instability of an incompressible boundary layer by linear and nonlinear analyses. The numerical work was complemented by an experimental study to investigate indentations of approximately $11\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FF}_{99}$ and $22\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FF}_{99}$ width at depths of 45 %, 52 % and 60 % of $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FF}_{99}$, where $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FF}_{99}$ indicates 99% boundary layer thickness. For these indentations a separation bubble confined within the indentation arises. Upstream of the indentation, spanwise-uniform Tollmien–Schlichting (TS) waves are assumed to exist, with the objective to investigate how the 3-D surface indentation modifies the 2-D TS disturbance. Numerical corroboration against experimental data reveals good quantitative agreement. Comparing the structure of the 3-D separation bubble to that created by a purely 2-D indentation, there are a number of topological changes particularly in the case of the widest indentation; more rapid amplification and modification of the upstream TS waves along the symmetry plane of the indentation is observed. For the shortest indentations, beyond a certain depth there are then no distinct topological changes of the separation bubbles and hence on flow instability. The destabilising mechanism is found to be due to the confined separation bubble and is attributed to the inflectional instability of the separated shear layer. Finally for the widest width indentation investigated ($22\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FF}_{99}$), results of the linear analysis are compared with direct numerical simulations. A comparison with the traditional criteria of using $N$-factors to assess instability of properly 3-D disturbances reveals that a general indication of flow destabilisation and development of strongly nonlinear behaviour is indicated as $N=6$ values are attained. However $N$-factors, based on linear models, can only be used to provide indications and severity of the destabilisation, since the process of disturbance breakdown to turbulence is inherently nonlinear and dependent on the magnitude and scope of the initial forcing.

The generation of a temperature disturbance in a flow is accompanied by the production of acoustic waves (direct noise) and of an entropy perturbation. If this entropy perturbation is accelerated or decelerated (as is the case through a nozzle or flow restriction), additional acoustic waves are generated (indirect noise). Several studies have demonstrated this mechanism in controlled conditions by using entropy wave generators, in which entropy waves are generated and convected through a nozzle, leading to direct and indirect noise. An analytical analysis of the direct and indirect noise produced by the generation and acceleration of entropy waves in a reflective environment is presented. The effect of reverberation (repeated acoustic reflections) on low-frequency perturbations (characteristic of entropy wave generators) is determined analytically. These results are then implemented in a set of limit cases, showing the limit behaviours of such systems. The analytical model is applied to the case of the Cambridge entropy wave generator experiment, in which entropy waves are generated by an electric heater and accelerated through a subsonic orifice plate. Due to the clear time separation of direct and indirect noise in the experimental results, direct and indirect noise transfer functions can be extracted from the experimental data for the first time and compared directly with existing theoretical models. The backward-propagating indirect noise generated at an orifice plate is shown to be significantly higher than predicted by existing theoretical models for isentropic nozzles.

Recent studies indicate that the transition from sheet to cloud cavitation depends on both cavitation number and Reynolds number. In the present paper this transition is investigated analytically and a physical model is introduced. In order to include the entire process, the model consists of two parts, a model for the growth of the sheet cavity and a viscous film flow model for the so-called re-entrant jet. The models allow the calculation of the length of the sheet cavity for given nucleation rates and initial nuclei radii and the spreading history of the viscous film. By definition, the transition occurs when the re-entrant jet reaches the point of origin of the sheet cavity, implying that the cavity length and the penetration length of the re-entrant jet are equal. Following this criterion, a stability map is derived showing that the transition depends on a critical Reynolds number which is a function of cavitation number and relative surface roughness. A good agreement was found between the model-based calculations and the experimental measurements. In conclusion, the presented research shows the evidence of nucleation and bubble collapse for the growth of the sheet cavity and underlines the role of wall friction for the evolution of the re-entrant jet.

Tomographic particle image velocimetry experiments were performed in the near field of the turbulent flow past a square cylinder. A classical Reynolds decomposition was performed on the resulting velocity fields into a time invariant mean flow and a fluctuating velocity field. This fluctuating velocity field was then further decomposed into coherent and residual/stochastic fluctuations. The statistical distributions of the second and third invariants of the velocity-gradient tensor were then computed at various streamwise locations, along the centreline of the flow and within the shear layers. These invariants were calculated from both the Reynolds-decomposed fluctuating velocity fields and the coherent and stochastic fluctuating velocity fields. The range of spatial locations probed incorporates regions of contrasting flow physics, including a mean recirculation region and separated shear layers, both upstream and downstream of the location of peak turbulence intensity along the centreline. These different flow physics are also reflected in the velocity gradients themselves with different topologies, as characterised by the statistical distributions of the constituent enstrophy and strain-rate invariants, for the three different fluctuating velocity fields. Despite these differing flow physics the ubiquitous self-similar ‘tear drop’-shaped joint probability density function between the second and third invariants of the velocity-gradient tensor is observed along the centreline and shear layer when calculated from both the Reynolds decomposed and the stochastic velocity fluctuations. These ‘tear drop’-shaped joint probability density functions are not, however, observed when calculated from the coherent velocity fluctuations. This ‘tear drop’ shape is classically associated with the statistical distribution of the velocity-gradient tensor invariants in fully developed turbulent flows in which there is no coherent dynamics present, and hence spectral peaks at low wavenumbers. The results presented in this manuscript, however, show that such ‘tear drops’ also exist in spatially developing inhomogeneous turbulent flows. This suggests that the ‘tear drop’ shape may not just be a universal feature of fully developed turbulence but of turbulent flows in general.

The present work considers the low-Reynolds-number wake flow behind a squareback Ahmed body, in close proximity to a ground. At low Reynolds numbers such wakes are known to undergo a series of bifurcations to a state that breaks reflectional symmetry. The symmetry breaking of the wake also persists at turbulent high Reynolds numbers, where it manifests as bi-modal behaviour with random switching between the asymmetric states. Thus far, it has only been possible to study the low-Reynolds-number sequence of bifurcations experimentally and mathematically. The present work presents the first numerical simulations capturing the sequence of symmetry breaking bifurcations that occur. A study of how the wake topology changes throughout suggests that interaction between the closer top/bottom pair of parallel shear layers can only dominate once there is sufficient underbody flow. When this occurs, the two main vortex structures in the wake switch from being horizontally to vertically aligned. A linear feedback control strategy, designed to attenuate base pressure force fluctuations, is then implemented. This causes an accompanying reduction in drag and re-symmetrisation of the wake. Analysis using the dynamic mode decomposition confirms that the wake shedding mode is re-symmetrised. This work motivates future attempts to capture wake symmetry breaking and bi-modality in numerical simulations, and application of a promising feedback control strategy at higher, turbulent Reynolds numbers.

We consider a smooth, spanwise-uniform forward-facing step defined by a Gauss error function of height 4 %–30 % and four times the width of the local boundary layer thickness $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FF}_{99}$ . The boundary layer flow over a smooth forward-facing stepped plate is studied with particular emphasis on stabilisation and destabilisation of the two-dimensional Tollmien–Schlichting (TS) waves and subsequently on three-dimensional disturbances at transition. The interaction between TS waves at a range of frequencies and a base flow over a single or two forward-facing smooth steps is conducted by linear analysis. The results indicate that for a TS wave with a frequency ${\mathcal{F}}\in [140,160]$ ( ${\mathcal{F}}=\unicode[STIX]{x1D714}\unicode[STIX]{x1D708}/U_{\infty }^{2}\times 10^{6}$ , where $\unicode[STIX]{x1D714}$ and $U_{\infty }$ denote the perturbation angle frequency and free-stream velocity magnitude, respectively, and $\unicode[STIX]{x1D708}$ denotes kinematic viscosity), the amplitude of the TS wave is attenuated in the unstable regime of the neutral stability curve corresponding to a flat plate boundary layer. Furthermore, it is observed that two smooth forward-facing steps lead to a more acute reduction of the amplitude of the TS wave. When the height of a step is increased to more than 20 % of the local boundary layer thickness for a fixed width parameter, the TS wave is amplified, and thereby a destabilisation effect is introduced. Therefore, the stabilisation or destabilisation effect of a smooth step is typically dependent on its shape parameters. To validate the results of the linear stability analysis, where a TS wave is damped by the forward-facing smooth steps direct numerical simulation (DNS) is performed. The results of the DNS correlate favourably with the linear analysis and show that for the investigated frequency of the TS wave, the K-type transition process is altered whereas the onset of the H-type transition is delayed. The results of the DNS suggest that for the perturbation with the non-dimensional frequency parameter ${\mathcal{F}}=150$ and in the absence of other external perturbations, two forward-facing smooth steps of height 5 % and 12 % of the boundary layer thickness delayed the H-type transition scenario and completely suppressed for the K-type transition. By considering Gaussian white noise with both fixed and random phase shifts, it is demonstrated by DNS that transition is postponed in time and space by two forward-facing smooth steps.

The three-dimensional vortex clusters, and the structures based on the quadrant classification of the intense tangential Reynolds stress (Qs), are studied in direct numerical simulations of statistically stationary homogeneous shear turbulence (HST) at Taylor microscale Reynolds number $Re_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D706}}\approx 50{-}250$, with emphasis on comparisons with turbulent channels (CHs). The Qs and vortex clusters in HST are found to be versions of the corresponding detached (in the sense of del Álamo et al. (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 561 (2006), pp. 329–358)) structures in CHs, although statistically symmetrised with respect to the substitution of sweeps by ejections and vice versa. In turn, these are more symmetric versions of the corresponding attached Qs and clusters. In both flows, only co-gradient sweeps and ejections larger than the local Corrsin scale are found to couple with the shear. They are oriented anisotropically, and are responsible for carrying most of the total Reynolds stress. Most large eddies in CHs are attached to the wall, but it is shown that this is probably a geometric consequence of their size, rather than the reason for their dynamical significance. Most small Q structures associated with different quadrants are far from each other in comparison to their size, but those that are close to each other tend to form quasi-streamwise trains of groups of a sweep and an ejection paired side by side in the spanwise direction, with a vortex cluster in between, generalising to three dimensions the corresponding arrangement of attached eddies in CHs. These pairs are organised around an inclined large-scale conditional vortex ‘roller’, and it is shown that the composite structure tends to be located at the interface between high- and low-velocity streaks, as well as in strong ‘co-gradient’ shear layers that separate streaks of either sign in which velocity is more uniform. It is further found that the conditional rollers are terminated by ‘hooks’ reminiscent of hairpins, both upright and inverted. The inverted hook weakens as the structures approach the wall, while the upright one changes little. At the same time, the inclination of the roller with respect to the mean velocity decreases from $45^{\circ }$ in HST to quasi-streamwise for wall-attached eddies. Many of these observations are generalised to intense Reynolds stresses formed with different pairs of velocity components, and it is shown that most properties of the small structures can be traced to their definitions, rather than to their dynamics. It is concluded that the larger Reynolds-stress structures are associated with shear turbulence, rather than with the presence of a wall, while the smaller ones are generic to turbulence in general, whether sheared or not.
