This work presents an experimental validation study of Isaacs’ incompressible unsteady-airfoil theory at Reynolds numbers above $10^{6}$, and explores the validity of the classical Kutta condition applied to surging flows. Harmonic variation of the free-stream velocity was produced by rotating choke vanes in an unsteady transonic wind tunnel, with time-resolved lift coefficients determined from surface pressure measurements on a NACA 0018 airfoil. Unsteady lift results demonstrate the same trends with reduced frequency and velocity amplitude ratio that are predicted by Isaacs’ theory. However, significant deviations of the lift magnitude and phase angle are observed. In order to understand the cause of these deviations, the background-oriented schlieren technique was used to visualize density gradients in the immediate vicinity of the airfoil trailing edge. The time-resolved background-oriented schlieren displacement field indicates oscillatory behaviour of the trailing-edge stagnation streakline, which violates the classical Kutta condition for this unsteady surging flow.

Double diffusion occurs when the fluid density depends on two components that diffuse at different rates (e.g. heat and salt in the ocean). Double diffusion can lead to an up-gradient buoyancy flux and drive motion at the expense of potential energy. Here, we follow the work of Lorenz (Tellus, vol. 7 (no. 2), 1955, pp. 157–167) and Winters et al. (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 289, 1995, pp. 115–128) for a single-component fluid and define the background potential energy (BPE) as the energy associated with an adiabatically sorted density field and derive its budget for a double-diffusive fluid. We find that double diffusion can convert BPE into available potential energy (APE), unlike in a single-component fluid, where the transfer of APE to BPE is irreversible. We also derive an evolution equation for the sorted buoyancy in a double-diffusive fluid, extending the work of Winters & D’Asaro (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 317, 1996, pp. 179–193) and Nakamura (J. Atmos. Sci., vol. 53 (no. 11), 1996, pp. 1524–1537). The criterion we develop for a release of BPE can be used to analyse the energetics of mixing and double diffusion in the ocean and other multiple-component fluids, and we illustrate its application using two-dimensional simulations of salt fingering.

We examine experimentally the influence of non-Darcy effects on convective dissolution in Hele-Shaw cells. We focus on buoyancy-driven convection, where the flow is controlled by the Rayleigh–Darcy number, $Ra$, which measures the strength of convection compared to diffusion. The Hele-Shaw cell is suitable to mimic Darcy flows only under certain geometrical constraints, and a recent theoretical work (Letelier et al., J. Fluid Mech., vol. 864, 2019, pp. 746–767) demonstrated that a precise limit exists for the parameter $\unicode[STIX]{x1D716}^{2}Ra$ – $\unicode[STIX]{x1D716}\sim$ thickness-to-height ratio – beyond which the flow exhibits non-Darcy effects. In this work, we run experiments for solute convection in Rayleigh–Bénard-like configuration. We examine a wide range of the parameters space $(Ra,\unicode[STIX]{x1D716})$ and we clearly identify the application limits of Darcy flow assumptions. Besides confirming previous theoretical predictions, current results are of relevance in the context of porous media flows – which are often studied experimentally with Hele-Shaw set-ups. Using our original datasets, we have been able to explain and reconcile the discrepancies observed between scaling laws previously proposed for Rayleigh–Bénard-like experiments and simulations in similar contexts. Specifically, we attribute an important role to the parameter $\unicode[STIX]{x1D716}^{2}Ra$, which clearly establishes thresholds beyond which Hele-Shaw experiment results are influenced by three-dimensional effects.

Motivated by our experimental observations of nanofibre formation via the centrifugal spinning process, we develop a string model to study the behaviours of a Newtonian, viscous curved jet, in a non-orthogonal curvilinear coordinate system including both air-drag effects and solvent evaporation for the first time. In centrifugal spinning a polymeric solution emerges from the nozzle of a spinneret rotating at high speeds around its axis of symmetry and thins as it moves away from the nozzle exit until it finally lands on the collector. Except for the Newtonian fluid assumption, our model includes the key parameters of the curved jet flow, e.g. viscous, inertial, rotational, surface tension, gravitational, mass diffusion within the jet, mass diffusion into air and aerodynamic effects, via Rossby ($Rb$), Reynolds ($Re$), Weber ($We$), Froude ($Fr$), Péclet ($Pe$), air Reynolds ($Re^{\ast }$) and air Péclet ($Pe^{\ast }$) numbers, and the collector radial position (${\mathcal{R}}$). Our results, including comparison to experiments, reveal that the aerodynamic effects must be considered to enable a correct prediction of the jet trajectory and radius. Decreasing $Rb$ not only renders the jet thinning much faster, but also forces the jet to wrap tighter around the rotation axis. Increasing $Re$, $Re^{\ast }$ and ${\mathcal{R}}$ leads to a longer jet. Decreasing $We$ causes the jet to wrap tighter around the spinneret but it shows trivial effects on the solvent evaporation. Changes in $Pe$ and $Pe^{\ast }$ do not significantly affect the jet trajectory. Finally, we propose simple relations to estimate the jet radius and the jet breakup length.

A sphere sinking through a chemical gradient drags fluid with it, deforming the gradient. The sphere leaves a trail of gradient enhancement that persists longer than the velocity disturbance in the Reynolds $10^{-2}\leqslant Re\leqslant 10^{2}$, Froude $10^{-1}\leqslant Fr\leqslant 10^{3}$ and Péclet $10^{2}<Pe\leqslant 10^{6}$ regime considered here. We quantify the enhancement of the gradient and the diffusive flux in the trail of disturbed chemical left by the passing sphere using a combination of numerical simulations and scaling analyses. When $Fr$ is large and buoyancy forces are negligible, dragged isosurfaces of chemical form a boundary layer of thickness $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FF}_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D70C}}$ around the sphere with diameter $l$. We derive the scaling $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FF}_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D70C}}/l\sim \mathit{Pe}^{-1/3}$ from the balance of advection and diffusion in the chemical boundary layer. The sphere displaces a single isosurface of chemical a maximum distance $\mathit{L}_{Def}$ that increases as $\mathit{L}_{Def}/l\sim l/\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FF}_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D70C}}\sim \mathit{Pe}^{1/3}$. Increased flux through the chemical boundary layer moving with the sphere is described by a Sherwood number, $Sh\sim l/\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FF}_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D70C}}\sim \mathit{Pe}^{1/3}$. The gradient enhancement trail extends much farther than $\mathit{L}_{Def}$ as displaced isosurfaces slowly return to their original positions through diffusion. In the reference frame of a chemical isosurface moving past the sphere, a new quantity describing the Lagrangian flux is found to scale as $\mathit{M}\sim (\mathit{L}_{Def}/l)^{2}\sim \mathit{Pe}^{2/3}$. The greater $\mathit{Pe}$ dependence of $\mathit{M}$ versus $Sh$ demonstrates the importance of the deformation trail for determining the total flux of chemical in the system. For $\mathit{Fr}\geqslant 10$, buoyancy forces are weak compared to the motion of the sphere and the preceding results are retained. Below $\mathit{Fr}=10$, an additional Froude dependence is found and $l/\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FF}_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D70C}}\sim Sh\sim Re^{1/6}Fr^{-1/6}Pe^{1/3}$. Buoyancy forces suppress gradient deformation downstream, resulting in $\mathit{L}_{Def}/l\sim Re^{-1/3}Fr^{1/3}Pe^{1/3}$ and $\mathit{M}\sim Re^{-1/3}Fr^{1/3}Pe^{2/3}$. The productivity of marine plankton – and therefore global carbon and oxygen cycles – depends on the availability of microscale gradients of chemicals. Because most plankton exist in the fluids regime under consideration, this work describes a new mechanism by which sinking particles and plankton can stir weak ambient chemical gradients a distance $\mathit{L}_{Def}$ and increase chemical flux in the trail by a factor of $\mathit{M}$.

Surfactants – molecules and particles that preferentially adsorb to fluid interfaces – play a ubiquitous role in the fluids of industry, of nature and of life. Since most surfactants cannot be seen directly, their behaviour must be inferred from their impact on observed flows, like the buoyant rise of a bubble, or the thickness of a coating film. In so doing, however, a difficulty arises: physically distinct surfactant processes can affect measurable flows in qualitatively identical ways, raising the spectre of confusion or even misinterpretation. This Perspective describes, in one coherent piece, both the equilibrium properties and dynamic processes of surfactants, to better enable the fluid mechanics community to understand, interpret and design surfactant/fluid systems. Specifically, we treat the equilibrium thermodynamics of surfactants at interfaces, including surface pressure, isotherms of soluble and insoluble surfactants and surface dilatational moduli (Gibbs and Marangoni). We describe surfactant dynamics in fluid systems, including surfactant transport and interfacial stress boundary conditions, the competition between surface diffusion, advection and adsorption/desorption, Marangoni stresses and flows and surface-excess rheology. We discuss paradigmatic problems from fluid mechanics that are impacted by surfactants, including translating drops and bubbles, surfactant adsorption to clean and oscillating interfaces; capillary wave damping, thin-film dynamics, foam drainage and the dynamics of particles and probes at surfactant-laden interfaces. Finally, we discuss the additional richness and complexity that frequently arise in ‘real’ surfactants, including phase transitions, phase coexistence and polycrystalline phases within surfactant monolayers, and their impact on non-Newtonian surface rheology.

We numerically investigate both single and multiple droplet dissolution with droplets consisting of less dense liquid dissolving in a denser host liquid. In this situation, buoyancy can lead to convection and thus plays an important role in the dissolution process. The significance of buoyancy is quantified by the Rayleigh number $Ra$, which is the buoyancy force over the viscous damping force. In this study, $Ra$ spans almost four decades from 0.1 to 400. We focus on how the mass flux, characterized by the Sherwood number $Sh$, and the flow morphologies depend on $Ra$. For single droplet dissolution, we first show the transition of the $Sh(Ra)$ scaling from a constant value to $Sh\sim Ra^{1/4}$, which confirms the experimental results by Dietrich et al. (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 794, 2016, pp. 45–67). The two distinct regimes, namely the diffusively and the convectively dominated regimes, exhibit different flow morphologies: when $Ra\geqslant 10$, a buoyant plume is clearly visible, which contrasts sharply with the pure diffusion case at low $Ra$. For multiple droplet dissolution, the well-known shielding effect comes into play at low $Ra$, so that the dissolution rate is slower as compared to the single droplet case. However, at high $Ra$, convection becomes more and more dominant so that a collective plume enhances the mass flux, and remarkably the multiple droplets dissolve faster than a single droplet. This has also been found in the experiments by Laghezza et al. (Soft Matt., vol. 12 (26), 2016, pp. 5787–5796). We explain this enhancement by the formation of a single, larger plume rather than several individual plumes. Moreover, there is an optimal $Ra$ at which the enhancement is maximized, because the single plume is narrower at larger $Ra$, which thus hinders the enhancement. Our findings demonstrate a new mechanism in collective droplet dissolution, which is the merging of the plumes, which leads to non-trivial phenomena, contrasting the shielding effect.

We study the three-dimensional hydrodynamic interaction of a pair of identical, initially spherical capsules freely suspended in a simple shear flow under Stokes flow conditions. The capsules are filled with a Newtonian liquid (same density and viscosity as the suspending fluid). Their membranes satisfy the neo-Hookean constitutive law. We consider the rarely studied case where the capsule centres are initially located in (or near) the plane defined by the flow direction and the vorticity vector, i.e. in two different shear planes. The motion and deformation of the capsules are modelled by means of a boundary integral technique to compute the flows, coupled to a finite element method to calculate the force exerted by the membranes on the fluids. We follow the motion and deformation of the capsules as they are convected towards each other after a sudden start of the flow. Our main finding is that, depending on their initial position and deformability, the two capsules may oscillate slowly about the flow gradient axis, get nearer to each other at each oscillation to finally interact strongly and separate. This minuet motion had not been identified previously. We identify the regions of space where either simple crossing or minuet occurs. This phenomenon has a marked influence on the irreversible trajectory drift of two capsules after crossing: the minuet process leads to a significant trajectory displacement along the flow gradient when none was expected, based on the previous studies where the two capsules had a significant relative velocity.

The occurrence of system-scale coherent structures, so-called condensates, is a well-known phenomenon in two-dimensional turbulence and is a consequence of the inverse energy cascade – the energy transfer from small to large scales that is a characteristic of two-dimensional turbulence. Here, the onset of the inverse energy cascade and the ensuing condensate formation are investigated as a function of the magnitude of the force and for different types of forcing. Random forces with constant mean energy input lead to a supercritical transition, while forcing through a small-scale linear instability results in a subcritical transition with bistability and hysteresis. That is, the transition to two-dimensional turbulence is non-universal. For the supercritical case we quantify the effect of large-scale friction on the value of the critical exponent and the location of the critical point.

Classical and symmetrical horizontal convection is studied by means of direct numerical simulations for Rayleigh numbers $Ra$ up to 3 × 1012 and Prandtl numbers $Pr=0.1$, 1 and 10. For both set-ups, a very good agreement in global quantities with respect to heat and momentum transport is attained. Similar to Shishkina & Wagner (Phys. Rev. Lett., vol. 116, 2016, 024302), we find Nusselt number $Nu$ versus $Ra$ scaling transitions in a region $10^{8}\leqslant Ra\leqslant 10^{11}$. Above a critical $Ra$, the flow undergoes either a steady–oscillatory transition (small $Pr$) or a transition from steady state to a transient state with detaching plumes (large $Pr$). The onset of the oscillations takes place at $Ra\,Pr^{-1}\approx 5\times 10^{9}$ and the onset of detaching plumes at $Ra\,Pr^{5/4}\approx 9\times 10^{10}$. These onsets coincide with the onsets of scaling transitions.

Coupled free-flow and porous-medium systems appear in a variety of industrial and environmental applications. Fluid flow in the free-flow domain is typically described by the (Navier–)Stokes equations while Darcy’s law is applied in the porous medium. The correct choice of coupling conditions on the fluid–porous interface is crucial for accurate numerical simulations of coupled problems. We found out that the Beavers–Joseph interface condition, which is widely used not only for fluid flow parallel to the porous layer but also for filtration problems, is unsuitable for arbitrary flow directions. To validate our statement, we provide several examples and compare numerical simulation results for the coupled Stokes–Darcy problems to the pore-scale resolved models. We show also that the Beavers–Joseph parameter cannot be fitted for arbitrary flow directions.

In this paper, we consider the dynamics of a helicoidal object, which can be either a passive particle or an active swimmer, with an arbitrary shape in a linear background flow at low Reynolds number, and derive a generalized version of the Jeffery equations for the angular dynamics of the object, including a new constant from the chirality of the object as well as the Bretherton constant. The new constant appears from the inhomogeneous chirality distribution along the axis of the helicoidal symmetry, whereas the overall chirality of the object contributes to the drift velocity. Further investigations are made for an object in a simple shear flow, and it is found that the chirality effects generate non-closed trajectories of the director vector which will be stably directed parallel or anti-parallel to the background vorticity vector depending on the sign of the chirality. A bacterial swimmer is considered as an example of a helicoidal object, and we calculate the values of the constants in the generalized Jeffery equations for a typical morphology of Escherichia coli. Our results provide useful expressions for the studies of microparticles and biological fluids, and emphasize the significance of the symmetry of an object on its motion at low Reynolds number.

When a drop impacts a dry surface at high velocity, it atomises into secondary droplets. These small droplets are generated by one of two types of splashes: either by a prompt splash from the spreading rim at the surface or by a thin corona splash, which levitates from the surface. This study investigates the splashing mechanisms experimentally using multiple high-resolution cameras and characterises the outcome of both splashing types at high Weber and Reynolds numbers. We demonstrate that the prompt splash is well described by the Rayleigh–Taylor instability of the rapidly advancing liquid lamella and determine the boundaries defining this splashing regime, which allows us to distinguish the prompt from the corona splash. Furthermore, we provide an expression to estimate the elapsed time during which the secondary droplets are generated, which is then implemented in the theory of Riboux & Gordillo (Phys. Rev. Lett., vol. 113 (2), 2014, 024507). This theoretical approach together with detailed quantification of the splashing outcome allows us to completely predict the outcome of both splashing types, which includes the mean size, velocity and total ejected volume of the secondary droplets. The detailed model proposed here can be indeed used to understand, characterise and predict more accurately the underlying physics in several applications.

Natural convection in porous media is a fundamental process for the long-term storage of CO2 in deep saline aquifers. Typically, details of mass transfer in porous media are inferred from the numerical solution of the volume-averaged Darcy–Oberbeck–Boussinesq (DOB) equations, even though these equations do not account for the microscopic properties of a porous medium. According to the DOB equations, natural convection in a porous medium is uniquely determined by the Rayleigh number. However, in contrast with experiments, DOB simulations yield a linear scaling of the Sherwood number with the Rayleigh number ($Ra$) for high values of $Ra$ ($Ra\gg 1300$). Here, we perform direct numerical simulations (DNS), fully resolving the flow field within the pores. We show that the boundary layer thickness is determined by the pore size instead of the Rayleigh number, as previously assumed. The mega- and proto-plume sizes increase with the pore size. Our DNS results exhibit a nonlinear scaling of the Sherwood number at high porosity, and for the same Rayleigh number, higher Sherwood numbers are predicted by DNS at lower porosities. It can be concluded that the scaling of the Sherwood number depends on the porosity and the pore-scale parameters, which is consistent with experimental studies.

Vortex interactions behind step cylinders with diameter ratio $D/d=2$ and 2.4 at Reynolds number ($Re_{D}$) 150 were investigated by directly solving the three-dimensional Navier–Stokes equations. In accordance with previous studies, three spanwise vortex cells were captured: S-, N- and L-cell vortices. In this paper, we focused on vortex interactions between the N- and L-cell vortices, especially the vortex dislocations and subsequent formations of vortex loop structures. The phase difference accumulation process of every pair of corresponding N- and L-cell vortices and its effects on the vortex dislocations were investigated. We revealed that the total phase difference between N- and L-cell vortices was accumulated by two physically independent mechanisms, namely different shedding frequencies and different convective velocities of these two cells. The second mechanism has never been reported before. The relative importance of these two mechanisms varied periodically in the phase difference accumulation process of every pair of corresponding N- and L-cell vortices. This variation caused the vortex dislocation process and the subsequent formation of the loop structures to change from one N-cell cycle to another. Our long-time observations also revealed an interruption of the conventional antisymmetric vortex interactions between two subsequent N-cell cycles in this wake. Moreover, the trigger value and the threshold value in the phase difference accumulation processes were identified and discussed. Both values contribute to better understanding of the vortex dislocations in this kind of wake flow. Finally, the universality of our discussions and conclusions was investigated.

We present a new theoretical model describing gravity–capillary waves in orbitally shaken cylindrical containers. Our model can account for both one-layer free-surface and two-layer interfacial wave systems. A set of modal equations for irrotational waves is formulated that we complement with viscous damping rates to incorporate energy dissipation. This approach allows us to calculate explicit formulas for the phase shifts between wave and shaker which are practically important for the mixing efficiency in orbitally shaken bioreactors. Resonance dynamics is described using eight dimensionless numbers, revealing a variety of different effects influencing the forced wave amplitudes. As an unexpected result, the model predicts the formation of novel spiral wave patterns resulting from a damping-induced symmetry breaking mechanism. For validation, we compare theoretical amplitudes, fluid velocities and phase shifts with three different and independent experiments and, when using the slightly deviating experimental values of the resonance frequencies, find a good agreement within the theoretical limits.

We present results from direct numerical simulations of flows in spherical and oblate spheroidal shells, driven both by precession and thermal convection, with Ekman number $Ek=10^{-4}$, non-diffusive Rayleigh numbers from $Ra=0.1$ to $Ra=10$ and unity Prandtl number. The applied precessional forcing spans seven orders of magnitude. Our experiments show a clear transition between a convective state and a precessing flow that can be approximated by a reduced dynamical model. The change in the flow is apparent in visualizations and a decomposition of the velocity into symmetric and antisymmetric components. For the flow dominated by precession, some parameter combinations show two stable solutions that can be realized by a hysteresis or a strong thermal forcing. An increase of the Rayleigh number at a constant precession rate exhibits established scaling properties for the heat transfer, with exponents $2/7$ and $6/5$.

‘Ground effect’ refers to the enhanced performance enjoyed by fliers or swimmers operating close to the ground. We derive a number of exact solutions for this phenomenon, thereby elucidating the underlying physical mechanisms involved in ground effect. Unlike previous analytic studies, our solutions are not restricted to particular parameter regimes, such as ‘weak’ or ‘extreme’ ground effect, and do not even require thin aerofoil theory. Moreover, the solutions are valid for a hitherto intractable range of flow phenomena, including point vortices, uniform and straining flows, unsteady motions of the wing, and the Kutta condition. We model the ground effect as the potential flow past a wing inclined above a flat wall. The solution of the model requires two steps: firstly, a coordinate transformation between the physical domain and a concentric annulus; and secondly, the solution of the potential flow problem inside the annulus. We show that both steps can be solved by introducing a new special function which is straightforward to compute. Moreover, the ensuing solutions are simple to express and offer new insight into the mathematical structure of ground effect. In order to identify the missing physics in our potential flow model, we compare our solutions against new experimental data. The experiments show that boundary layer separation on the wing and wall occurs at small angles of attack, and we suggest ways in which our model could be extended to account for these effects.

Pressure and shear-driven flows of a confined film of fluid overlying a periodic one-dimensional topography of arbitrary shape are considered for prediction of the effective hydraulic permeability in the Stokes flow regime. The other surface confining the fluid may be a planar no-slip wall, an identically patterned wall, a free surface or a surface with prescribed shear. Analytical predictions are obtained using spectral analysis and the domain perturbation method under the assumption of small pattern size to pitch ratio. Using a novel decomposition of the channel height effects into exponentially and algebraically decaying components, a simple surface-metrology-dependent relationship which connects the eigenvalues of the effective permeability tensor is obtained. Two representative topographies are assessed numerically: the infinitely differentiable topography of a phase-modulated sinusoid which has multiple local extrema and zero crossings and the non-differentiable triangular-wave topography. Non-differentiability in the form of corners of triangular patterns and the cusps of scalloped patterns are not found to be an impediment to meaningful and numerically accurate asymptotic predictions of effective permeability and effective slip, contradicting an earlier suggestion from the literature. Several distinct applications of the theory to the friction-reduction and shear-stability performance of the recently developed lubricant impregnated patterned surfaces as well as to scalloped and trapezoidal drag-reduction riblets are discussed, with comparison to experimental data from the literature for the last application. Analytical approximations which have an extended domain of numerical accuracy are also proposed.
