The turbulent boundary layer over a Gaussian-shaped bump is computed by direct numerical simulation of the incompressible Navier–Stokes equations. The two-dimensional bump causes a series of strong pressure gradients alternating in rapid succession. At the inflow, the momentum thickness Reynolds number is approximately $1000$ and the boundary layer thickness is $1/8$ of the bump height. Direct numerical simulation results show that the strong favourable pressure gradient (FPG) causes the boundary layer to enter a relaminarization process. The near-wall turbulence is significantly weakened and becomes intermittent, however, relaminarization does not complete. The streamwise velocity profiles deviate above the standard logarithmic law and the Reynolds shear stress is reduced. The strong acceleration also suppresses the wall-shear normalized turbulent kinetic energy production rate. At the bump peak, where the FPG switches to an adverse gradient (APG), the near-wall turbulence is suddenly enhanced through a partial retransition process. This results in a new highly energized internal layer which is more resilient to the strong APG and only produces incipient flow separation on the downstream side. In the strong FPG and APG regions, the inner and outer layers become largely independent of each other. The near-wall region responds to the pressure gradients and determines the skin friction. The outer layer behaves similarly to a free shear layer subject to pressure gradients and mean streamline curvature effects. Results from a RANS simulation of the bump are also discussed and clearly show the lack of predictive capacity of the near-wall pressure gradient effects on the mean flow.

Resolvent analysis identifies the most responsive forcings and most receptive states of a dynamical system, in an input–output sense, based on its governing equations. Interest in the method has continued to grow during the past decade due to its potential to reveal structures in turbulent flows, to guide sensor/actuator placement and for flow control applications. However, resolvent analysis requires access to high-fidelity numerical solvers to produce the linearized dynamics operator. In this work, we develop a purely data-driven algorithm to perform resolvent analysis to obtain the leading forcing and response modes, without recourse to the governing equations, but instead based on snapshots of the transient evolution of linearly stable flows. The formulation of our method follows from two established facts: (i) dynamic mode decomposition can approximate eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the underlying operator governing the evolution of a system from measurement data, and (ii) a projection of the resolvent operator onto an invariant subspace can be built from this learned eigendecomposition. We demonstrate the method on numerical data of the linearized complex Ginzburg–Landau equation and of three-dimensional transitional channel flow, and discuss data requirements. Presently, the method is suitable for the analysis of laminar equilibria, and its application to turbulent flows would require disambiguation between the linear and nonlinear dynamics driving the flow. The ability to perform resolvent analysis in a completely equation-free and adjoint-free manner will play a significant role in lowering the barrier of entry to resolvent research and applications.

The motion of a gaseous Taylor bubble in a capillary tube is typical of many biological and engineering systems, such as small-scale reactors and microfluidic devices. Although the dynamics of a bubble in a Newtonian liquid has been the subject of several studies since the seminal works of Taylor (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 10, issue 2, 1961, pp. 161–165) and Bretherton (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 10, issue 2, 1961, pp. 166–188), the case where the fluid exhibits a shear-thinning behaviour is much less understood. To fill this gap, we study the dynamics of a bubble that moves in a shear-thinning fluid whose viscosity is described by the Ellis viscosity model. With this aim, we derive a lubrication model in the film region to identify the scaling laws for the bubble speed, the film thickness and the pressure drop as a function of the Ellis number and the degree of shear thinning. Our model generalizes Bretherton's results to shear-thinning fluids by identification of a universal scaling law for the effective viscosity that accounts for the interplay of the zero-shear-rate and shear-thinning effects. The film thickness follows a $2/3$ scaling law with respect to the capillary number based on the proposed effective viscosity. The ratio between the bubble speed and the average velocity of the fluid ahead of the bubble is a function of the effective capillary number only. We show that some portions of the bubble are dominated by the zero-shear-rate effect discussing the extent to which the use of the power-law viscosity model can be legitimized. Finally, we study the location of the recirculating vortices ahead of the bubble.

We report a direct numerical simulation (DNS) study of the mean velocity and temperature profiles in turbulent Rayleigh–Bénard convection (RBC) at low Prandtl numbers ($Pr$). The numerical study is conducted in a vertical thin disk with $Pr$ varied in the range $0.17\leq Pr\leq 4.4$ and the Rayleigh number ($Ra$) varied in the range $5\times 10^8\leq Ra \leq 1\times 10^{10}$. By varying $Pr$ from 4.4 to 0.17, we find a sharp change of flow patterns for the large-scale circulation (LSC) from a rigid-body rotation to a near-wall turbulent jet. We numerically examine the mean velocity equation in the bulk region and find that the mean horizontal velocity profile $u(z)$ can be determined by a balance equation between the mean convection and turbulent diffusion with a constant turbulent viscosity $\nu _t$. This balance equation admits a self-similarity jet solution, which fits the DNS data well. In the boundary-layer region, we find that both the mean temperature profile $T(z)$ and $u(z)$ can be determined by a balance equation between the molecular diffusion and turbulent diffusion. Within the viscous boundary layer, both $u(z)$ and $T(z)$ can be solved analytically and the analytical results agree well with the DNS data. Our careful characterisation of the mean velocity and temperature profiles in low-$Pr$ RBC provides a further understanding of the intricate interplay between the LSC, plume emission and boundary-layer dynamics, and pinpoints the physical mechanism for the emergence of a pronounced LSC in low-$Pr$ RBC.

We propose an aerodynamic force model associated with a Galerkin model for the unforced fluidic pinball, the two-dimensional flow around three equal cylinders with one radius distance to each other. The starting point is a Galerkin model of a bluff-body flow. The force on this body is derived as a constant-linear-quadratic function of the mode amplitudes from first principles following the pioneering work of Noca (On the evaluation of time-dependent fluid-dynamic forces on bluff bodies. PhD thesis, California Institute of Technology, 1997), Noca et al. (J. Fluids Struct., vol. 13, issue 5, 1999, pp. 551–578) and Liang & Dong (Virtual force measurement of POD modes for a flat plate in low Reynolds number flows. AIAA Paper 2014-0054). The force model is simplified for the mean-field model of the unforced fluidic pinball (Deng et al., J. Fluid Mech., vol. 884, 2020, p. A37) using symmetry properties and sparse calibration. The model is successfully applied to transient and post-transient dynamics in different Reynolds number regimes: the periodic vortex shedding after the Hopf bifurcation and the asymmetric vortex shedding after the pitchfork bifurcation comprising six different Navier–Stokes solutions. We foresee many applications of the Galerkin force model for other bluff bodies and flow control.

We carry out direct numerical simulations of turbulent flow over riblets, streamwise- aligned grooves that are designed to reduce drag by modifying the near-wall flow. Twenty riblet geometries and sizes are considered, namely symmetric triangular with tip angle $30^\circ$, $60^\circ$ and $90^\circ$, asymmetric triangular, blade and trapezoidal. To save on computational cost, simulations are performed using the minimal-channel flow configuration. With this unprecedented breadth of high-fidelity flow data near the wall, we are able to obtain more general insights into the flow physics of riblets. As observed by García-Mayoral & Jiménez (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 678, 2011, pp. 317–347), we confirm that the drag-change curves of all the present groove geometries better collapse when reported with the viscous-scaled square root of the groove area $\ell _g^+$, rather than the riblet spacing $s^+$. Using a two-dimensional generalization of the Fukagata–Iwamoto–Kasagi identity in difference form we isolate the different drag-change contributions. We show that the drag increase associated with dispersive stresses carried by secondary flows can be as important as the one associated with the turbulent stresses and the pre-eminence of dispersive stresses can be estimated by the groove width at the riblet mean height.

Experiments are presented on the Richtmyer–Meshkov instability (RMI) with a three-dimensional, multi-mode initial perturbation. The experiments use a vertical shock tube, where a stably stratified interface is formed between air and sulphur hexafluoride (SF$_6$) via counterflow. A perturbation is imposed at the interface by vertical oscillation of the gas column, forming Faraday waves. The interface is accelerated by a Mach 1.17 (in air) shock wave, and the development of the mixing region between the gases is investigated using particle image velocimetry. Following shock acceleration, a reflected shock wave from the bottom of the shock tube interacts with the mixing layer a second time (reshock). The experiment is initialized with both high and low amplitude perturbations to examine the effect of the perturbation amplitude on measured quantities. The instability growth exponent ($\theta$) is determined from the kinetic energy field using the width of the mixing layer and the decay of kinetic energy, which are found to be in agreement when the flow is most strongly excited. A growth exponent of $\theta \approx 0.5$ is found for all cases except the high-amplitude reshocked regime (where $\theta \approx 0.33$). High-amplitude experiments exhibit the transitional outer Reynolds number $(Re \equiv {h \dot {h}}/{\nu } > 10^4)$ required for mixing transition following the incident shock, and both experiments are elevated well above this threshold following reshock. However, neither set of experiments meet the more stringent requirements proposed by Zhou et al. (Phys. Rev.E, vol. 67, issue 5, 2003) which include the time dependent aspect of the RMI, an observation which is also made when examining the spectra.

We revisit two-dimensional channel flow with fixed volume flux for Reynolds numbers $Re\in [7000,72\,000]$ via direct numerical simulations and uncover a region of multistability of turbulent states. New asymmetric states (based on comparing the time-averaged mean shear on each of the channel walls) exist for at least $32\,000\,h/U$ when $Re \in [21\,000, 42\,000]$ alongside the known symmetric solution ($2h$ is the channel height and $U$ is the mean flow rate). Both the symmetric and asymmetric states resemble a travelling wave even at $Re$ an order of magnitude above the primary bifurcation at $Re=5772$ with the asymmetric state showing heightened turbulent behaviour near one of the channel walls. These asymmetric states display up to $22\,\%$ reduction in pressure gradient compared with their symmetric counterparts. The saddle state between the two apparent attractors is shown to be the travelling wave solution which originates from the primary bifurcation. By $Re=43\,000$, the symmetric solution has become unstable leaving only the asymmetric state and its reflected counterpart as attractors until at least $Re=46\,875$. At $Re=60\,000$, the pair of asymmetric states become connected so that the ‘turbulent’ wall switches apparently randomly and infrequently. In this way, the symmetry of the flow is then restored but only after averaging over extremely long times ($\gg 10^5 h/U$).

We consider the downstream development of small amplitude unsteady disturbances on a (Blasius) boundary layer. Two-dimensional disturbances have received much attention in the past, but herein lies an interesting conundrum, namely that two completely disparate families exist. The first, originally found by Lam & Rott and Ackerberg & Phillips, is located deep inside the boundary layer, and decays exponentially downstream with an increasingly short wavelength. The other family, originally found by Brown & Stewartson, is centred at the outer edge of the boundary layer, and exhibits slower decay than the former family. In this paper, we consider three-dimensional disturbances. Initially we mount a downstream ‘marching’ approach based on the ‘boundary-region’ equations, wherein spanwise scales are (notionally) comparable to the boundary-layer thickness. These calculations strongly suggest that disturbance growth is possible downstream, in contrast to two-dimensional disturbances that (on the streamwise length scales considered) all decay. We then mount a (heuristic) numerical investigation, performing a locally parallel eigenmode search at increasing downstream locations. This indicates that, for two-dimensional disturbances, with increasingly downstream locations, progressively more eigenmodes evolve, that are clearly linked to the Lam & Rott and Ackerberg & Phillips family, being spawned from what appears to be the Brown & Stewartson variety. These results also clearly indicate three-dimensionality can have a profound effect on the two-dimensional modes, including the potential for downstream growth. This provides an explanation for the downstream growth witnessed in the downstream-developing calculations, and is then conclusively confirmed by (mathematically rigorous) asymptotic analyses, valid far downstream.

We present a theoretical and experimental study of the dynamics of two-layer viscous fluid flows on inclined surfaces, motivated by natural and industrial phenomena involving the interactions between two fluid layers. A general model describing the evolution of two fluids on an inclined substrate is developed and explored to reveal a rich variety of flow regimes for different modes of release. The asymptotic reduction of this problem due to the dominance of the along-slope component of gravity is shown to yield considerable analytical inroads compared with previous studies of multi-layer flow configurations, which have focused exclusively on the case of horizontal beds. For the canonical example in which two fluids are introduced at a constant flux, the flow forms two regions: an upstream region containing both fluids, and a downstream region comprised purely of the lighter fluid, with a sharp intervening jump in thicknesses between the two. By constructing similarity solutions, we establish a full regime diagram of the possible configurations over all asymptotic limits of the viscosity, flux and density ratios. For the release of two fixed volumes of fluid, the layers separate completely into two disjoint but connected regions, contrasting in essential structure from the constant flux case. Even a small volume of the heavier fluid is able to significantly accelerate the propagation of the lighter fluid in front of it. Excellent agreement is found between our theoretical predictions and the results of a series of laboratory experiments.

Baroclinic critical levels arise as singularities in the inviscid linear theory of waves propagating through a stratified, horizontally directed and sheared flow. For a steady wave forcing, disturbances grow secularly over the critical layers surrounding these levels, generating a jet-like defect in the mean flow. We use a matched asymptotic expansion to furnish a reduced model of the nonlinear dynamics of such defects. By solving the linear initial-value problem for small perturbations to the defect, we establish that secondary instabilities appear at later times. Because the defect is time dependent, conventional normal-mode analysis is quantitatively inaccurate, but does successfully predict the occurrence of the secondary instability. The instability has a singular character in that disturbances with the shortest horizontal wavelength grow most vigorously at late times, unless dissipation is included. The instability can be suppressed by weak viscosity; by itself, thermal dissipation delays, but does not arrest instability. Numerical computations with the dissipative reduced model demonstrate that the secondary instability saturates as the defect rolls up into a coherent vortical structure. This structure excites a new wave propagating at a different phase speed, thereby forcing a new set of baroclinic critical levels. The implications for self-replication are discussed.

We investigate the behaviour of microscopic heavy particles settling in homogeneous air turbulence. The regimes are relevant to the airborne transport of dust and droplets: the Taylor-microscale Reynolds number is $Re_\lambda = 289\text {--}462$, the Kolmogorov-scale Stokes number is $St = 1.2\text {--}13$ and the Kolmogorov acceleration is comparable to the gravitational acceleration (i.e. the Froude number $Fr = O(1)$). We use high-speed laser imaging to track the particles and simultaneously characterize the air velocity field, resolving all relevant spatio-temporal scales. The role of the flow sampled by the particles is spotlighted. In the present range of parameters, the particle settling velocity is enhanced proportionally to the velocity scale of the turbulence. Both gravity and inertia reduce the velocity fluctuations of the particles compared to the fluid; while they have competing effect on the particle acceleration, through the crossing trajectories and inertial filtering mechanisms, respectively. The preferential sampling of high-strain/low-vorticity regions is measurable, but its impact on the global statistics is moderate. The inertial particles have large relative velocity at small separations, which increases their pair dispersion; however, gravity offsets this effect by causing them to experience fluid velocities that decorrelate faster in time compared to tracers. Based on the observations, we derive an analytical model to predict the particle velocity and acceleration variances for arbitrary $St$, $Fr$ and $Re_\lambda$. This agrees well with the present observations and previous simulations and captures the respective effects of inertia and gravity, both of which play crucial roles in the transport.

Here, we present experimental results of water and ethanol drops of radii $R$, density $\rho$ and interfacial tension coefficient $\sigma$, impacting with a velocity $V$ over different types of sandpapers containing particles of characteristic diameter $\varepsilon$ embedded in their surfaces. It is shown that the transition from spreading to splashing at normal atmospheric conditions can be classified depending on the value of the parameter $\varepsilon /H_t\simeq We_\varepsilon =We(\varepsilon /R)$, with $We=\rho V^2 R/\sigma$ the Weber number and $H_t$ indicating the initial thickness of the thin film – the lamella – which is ejected along the substrate once the drop touches the solid. When $We_\varepsilon \lesssim 1$ and the liquid wets the substrate, the critical value of the Weber number above which the drop splashes, $We_c$, can be predicted using the results in Gordillo & Riboux (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 871, 2019, R3) once the angle the advancing rim forms with the substrate, $\alpha$, is expressed as a decreasing function of the static advancing contact angle. The calculated values of $We_c$ for the case of water drops impacting over rough substrates are smaller than the corresponding ones for smooth substrates, in agreement with experimental observations. Moreover, if the liquid does not wet the substrate, it is also shown that the splash velocity can be predicted using the theory for superhydrophobic substrates in Quintero, Riboux & Gordillo (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 870, 2019, 175–188). For those cases in which $We_\varepsilon \gtrsim 1$ and the liquid wets the substrate, we demonstrate that the critical Weber number for splashing decreases with $\varepsilon$ as $We_c\propto (R\cos \theta _0 /\varepsilon )^{3/5}$, with $\theta _0$ the value of the Young contact angle.

When an object is accelerated in a fluid, a primary vortex is formed through the roll-up of a shear layer. This primary vortex does not grow indefinitely and will reach a limiting size and strength. Additional vorticity beyond the critical limit will end up in a trailing shear layer and accumulate into secondary vortices. The secondary vortices are typically considerably smaller than the primary vortex. In this paper, we focus on the formation, shedding and trajectory of secondary vortices generated by a rotating rectangular plate in a quiescent fluid using time-resolved particle image velocimetry. The Reynolds number $\textit {Re}$ based on the maximum rotational velocity of the plate and the distance between the centre of rotation and the tip of the plate is varied from 840 to 11 150. At low $\textit {Re}$, the shear layer is a continuous uninterrupted layer of vorticity that rolls up into a single coherent primary vortex. At $\textit {Re} = 1955$, the shear layer becomes unstable and secondary vortices emerge and subsequently move away from the tip of the plate. For $\textit {Re} > 4000$, secondary vortices are discretely released from the plate tip and are not generated from the stretching of an unstable shear layer. First, we demonstrate that the roll-up of the shear layer, the trajectory of the primary vortex and the path of secondary vortices can be predicted by a modified Kaden spiral for the entire $\textit {Re}$ range considered. Second, the timing of the secondary vortex shedding is analysed using the swirling strength criterion. The separation time of each secondary vortex is identified as a local maximum in the temporal evolution of the average swirling strength close to the plate tip. The time interval between the release of successive secondary vortices is not constant during the rotation but increases the more vortices have been shed. The shedding time interval also increases with decreasing Reynolds number. The increased time interval under both conditions is due to a reduced circulation feeding rate.

It has been suggested that a cellularly unstable laminar flame, which is freely propagating in unbounded space, can accelerate and evolve into a turbulent flame with the neighbouring flow exhibiting the basic characteristics of turbulence. Famously known as self-turbulization, this conceptual transition in the flow regime, which arises from local interactions between the propagating wrinkled flamefront and the flow, is critical in extreme events such as the deflagration-to-detonation transition (DDT) leading to supernova explosions. Recognizing that such a transition in the flow regime has not been conclusively demonstrated through experiments, in this work, we present experimental measurements of flow characteristics of flame-generated ‘turbulence’ for expanding cellular laminar flames. The energy spectra of such ‘turbulence’ at different stages of cellular instability are analysed. A subsequent scaling analysis points out that the observed energy spectra are driven by the fractal topology of the cellularly unstable flamefront.

We conduct an asymptotic analysis to derive a macrotransport equation for the long-time transport of a chemotactic/diffusiophoretic colloidal species in a uniform circular tube under a steady, laminar, pressure-driven flow and transient solute gradient. The solute gradient drives a ‘log-sensing’ advective flux of the colloidal species, which competes with Taylor dispersion due to the hydrodynamic flow. We demonstrate excellent agreement between the macrotransport equation and direct numerical solution of the full advection–diffusion equation for the colloidal species transport. In addition to its accuracy, the macrotransport equation requires $O(10^3)$ times less computational runtime than direct numerical solution of the advection–diffusion equation. Via scaling arguments, we identify three regimes of the colloidal species macrotransport, which span from chemotactic/diffusiophoretic-dominated macrotransport to the familiar Taylor dispersion regime, where macrotransport is dominated by the hydrodynamic flow. Finally, we discuss generalization of the macrotransport equation to channels of arbitrary (but constant) cross-section and to incorporate more sophisticated models of chemotactic fluxes. The macrotransport framework developed here will broaden the scope of designing chemotactic/diffusiophoretic transport systems by elucidating the interplay of macrotransport due to chemotaxis/diffusiophoresis and hydrodynamic flow.

We study the flow of water waves over bathymetry that varies periodically along one direction. We derive a linearized, homogenized model and show that the periodic bathymetry induces an effective dispersion, distinct from the dispersion inherently present in water waves. We relate this dispersion to the well-known effective dispersion introduced by changes in the bathymetry in non-rectangular channels. Numerical simulations using the (non-dispersive) shallow water equations reveal that a balance between this effective dispersion and nonlinearity can create solitary waves. We derive a Korteweg–de Vries-type equation that approximates the behaviour of these waves in the weakly nonlinear regime. We show that, depending on geometry, dispersion due to bathymetry can be much stronger than traditional water wave dispersion and can prevent wave breaking in strongly nonlinear regimes. Computational experiments using depth-averaged water wave models confirm the analysis and suggest that experimental observation of these solitary waves is possible.

We stabilize the flow past a cluster of three rotating cylinders – the fluidic pinball – with automated gradient-enriched machine learning algorithms. The control laws command the rotation speed of each cylinder in an open- and closed-loop manner. These laws are optimized with respect to the average distance from the target steady solution in three successively richer search spaces. First, stabilization is pursued with steady symmetric forcing. Second, we allow for asymmetric steady forcing. And third, we determine an optimal feedback controller employing nine velocity probes downstream. As expected, the control performance increases with every generalization of the search space. Surprisingly, both open- and closed-loop optimal controllers include an asymmetric forcing, which surpasses symmetric forcing. Intriguingly, the best performance is achieved by a combination of phasor control and asymmetric steady forcing. We hypothesize that asymmetric forcing is typical for pitchfork bifurcated dynamics of nominally symmetric configurations. Key enablers are automated machine learning algorithms augmented with gradient search: explorative gradient method for the open-loop parameter optimization and a gradient-enriched machine learning control (gMLC) for the feedback optimization. Gradient-enriched machine learning control learns the control law significantly faster thanpreviously employed genetic programming control. The gMLC source code is freely available online.

Energy transfer in turbulent fluids is non-Gaussian. We quantify non-Gaussian energy transfer between the atmosphere and bodies of water using a turbulent diffusion operator coupled with temporally self-affine velocity distributions and a recursive integration method that produce multifractal measures. The measures serve as input to a system of moment field equations (derived from Navier–Stokes) that generate and track high-frequency gravity waves that propagate through the water surface (as a result of the air–water interactions). The dimension of the support of the air–water turbulence produced by our methods falls within the range of theory and observation, and correspondingly, hindcast statistical measures of the water-wave surface such as significant water-wave height and wave period are well correlated to observational buoy data. Further, our recursive integration method can be used by spectral resolving phase-averaged models to interpolate temporal wind data to smaller scales to capture the non-Gaussian behaviour of the air–water interaction.

Granular systems are of a discrete nature. Nevertheless, it can be advantageous to describe their dynamics by means of continuum mechanical methods. The numerical solution of the corresponding hydrodynamic equations is, however, difficult. Therefore, previous numerical simulations are typically geared towards highly specific systems and frequently restricted to two dimensions or mild driving conditions. Here, we present the first robust general simulation scheme for granular hydrodynamics in three dimensions which is not bound to the above limitations. The performance of the simulation scheme is demonstrated by means of three applications which have been proven as notoriously difficult for numerical hydrodynamic description. Although, by construction, our numerical method covers grain-inertia flows, the presented examples demonstrate that it produces reliable results even in the jammed or high density limit.
