A study of compressible supersonic turbulent flow in a plane channel with isothermal walls has been performed using direct numerical simulation. Mach numbers, based on the bulk velocity and sound speed at the walls, of 1.5 and 3 are considered; Reynolds numbers, defined in terms of the centreline velocity and channel half-width, are of the order of 3000. Because of the relatively low Reynolds number, all of the relevant scales of motion can be captured, and no subgrid-scale or turbulence model is needed. The isothermal boundary conditions give rise to a flow that is strongly influenced by wall-normal gradients of mean density and temperature. These gradients are found to cause an enhanced streamwise coherence of the near-wall streaks, but not to seriously invalidate Morkovin's hypothesis : the magnitude of fluctuations of total temperature and especially pressure are much less than their mean values, and consequently the dominant compressibility effect is that due to mean property variations. The Van Driest transformation is found to be very successful at both Mach numbers, and when properly scaled, statistics are found to agree well with data from incompressible channel flow results.

The stress tensor in a granular shear flow is calculated by supposing that binary collisions between the particles comprising the granular mass are responsible for most of the momentum transport. We assume that the particles are smooth, hard, elastic spheres and express the stress as an integral containing probability distribution functions for the velocities of the particles and for their spatial arrangement. By assuming that the single-particle velocity distribution function is Maxwellian and that the spatial pair distribution function is given by a formula due to Carnahan & Starling, we reduce this integral to one depending upon a single non-dimensional parameter R: the ratio of the characteristic mean shear velocity to the root mean square of the precollisional particle-velocity perturbation. The integral is evaluated asymptotically for R [Gt ] 1 and R [Lt ] 1 and numerically for intermediate values. Good agreement is found between the stresses measured in experiments on dry granular materials and the theoretical predictions when R is given the value 1·7. This case is probably the one for which the present analysis is most appropriate. For moderate and large values of R, the theory predicts both shear and normal stresses that are proportional to the square of the particle diameter and the square of the shear rate, and depend strongly on the solids volume fraction. A provisional comparison is made between the stresses predicted in the limit R → ∞ and the experimental results of Bagnold for shear flow of neutrally buoyant wax spheres suspended in water. The predicted stresses are of the correct order of magnitude and yield the proper variation of stress with concentration. When R [Lt ] 1, the shear stress is linear in the shear rate, and the analysis can be applied to shear flow in a fluidized bed, although such an application is not developed further here.

This paper describes how the flows around two circular cylinders, displaced in a plane normal to the free stream, interact as the two bodies are brought close together. Surface pressure measurements at a Reynolds number of 2·5 × 104, based on the diameter of a single cylinder, show the presence of a mean repulsive force between the cylinders. An instability of the flow was found when the gap between the cylinders was in the range between one diameter and about 0·1 of a diameter. Correlation measurements of hot-wire outputs indicate how mutual interference influences the formation of vortex streets from the two cylinders. Spanwise correlation measurements show that the correlation length doubles as the cylinders are brought into contact.

Small rigid spherical partials are settling under gravity through Newtonian fluid, and the volume fraction of the particles (ϕ) is small although sufficiently large for the effects of interactions between pairs of particles to be significant. Two neighbouring particles interact both hydrodynamically (with low-Reynolds-number flow about each particle) and through the exertion of a mutual force of molecular or electrical origin which is mainly repulsive; and they also diffuse relatively to each other by Brownian motion. The dispersion contains several species of particle which differ in radius and density.

The purpose of the paper is to derive formulae for the mean velocity of the particles of each species correct to order ϕ, that is, with allowance for the effect of pair interactions. The method devised for the calculation of the mean velocity in a monodisperse system (Batchelor 1972) is first generalized to give the mean additional velocity of a particle of species i due to the presence of a particle of species j in terms of the pair mobility functions and the probability distribution pii(r) for the relative position of an i and a j particle. The second step is to determine pij(r) from a differential equation of Fokker-Planck type representing the effects of relative motion of the two particles due to gravity, the interparticle force, and Brownian diffusion. The solution of this equation is investigated for a range of special conditions, including large values of the Péclet number (negligible effect of Brownian motion); small values of the Ptclet number; and extreme values of the ratio of the radii of the two spheres. There are found to be three different limits for pij(r) corresponding to different ways of approaching the state of equal sphere radii, equal sphere densities, and zero Brownian relative diffusivity.

Consideration of the effect of relative diffusion on the pair-distribution function shows the existence of an effective interactive force between the two particles and consequently a contribution to the mean velocity of the particles of each species. The direct contributions to the mean velocity of particles of one species due to Brownian diffusion and to the interparticle force are non-zero whenever the pair-distribution function is non-isotropic, that is, at all except large values of the Péclet number.

The forms taken by the expression for the mean velocity of the particles of one species in the various cases listed above are examined. Numerical values will be presented in Part 2.

Large-scale structures in the form of instability waves are an inherent part of a shearlayer mixing process. Such structures are shown to be present in an acoustically and aerodynamically well behaved jet even at high Mach numbers. They do not directly radiate significant acoustic power in a subsonic jet, but do govern the production of the turbulent fluctuations which radiate broad-band jet noise. Over the whole subsonic Mach number range, a significant increase in jet noise can be produced by exciting the shear layer with a fluctuating pressure at the nozzle of only 0·08 % of the jet dynamic head but with the correct Strouhal number. Such excitation by internal acoustic, aerodynamic or thermal fluctuations could explain the variability of jet noise measurements between different rigs and could also be responsible for some components of ‘excess’ noise.

A novel technique is presented for determining the coefficient of shear-induced particle self-diffusion in concentrated suspensions of solid spheres, which relies on the fact that this coefficient can be computed from the measured variations in the time taken by a single marked particle in the suspension to complete successive circuits in a Couette device. Since this method does not involve the direct measurement of the lateral position of the marked particle, it requires a much simpler experiment than that used by Eckstein, Bailey & Shapiro (1977) which is shown to be constrained by wall effects at high particle concentration. The diffusion coefficient thus determined was found to be proportional to the product γa2, where γ is the shear rate and a the particle radius, and to have the asymptotic form 0.5γa2ϕ2 in the dilute limit when the particle concentration ϕ → 0.

A new implementation of the conventional Stokesian Dynamics (SD) algorithm, called accelerated Stokesian Dynamics (ASD), is presented. The equations governing the motion of N particles suspended in a viscous fluid at low particle Reynolds number are solved accurately and efficiently, including all hydrodynamic interactions, but with a significantly lower computational cost of O(N ln N). The main differences from the conventional SD method lie in the calculation of the many-body long-range interactions, where the Ewald-summed wave-space contribution is calculated as a Fourier transform sum and in the iterative inversion of the now sparse resistance matrix. The new method is applied to problems in the rheology of both structured and random suspensions, and accurate results are obtained with much larger numbers of particles. With access to larger N, the high-frequency dynamic viscosities and short-time self-diffusivities of random suspensions for volume fractions above the freezing point are now studied. The ASD method opens up an entire new class of suspension problems that can be investigated, including particles of non-spherical shape and a distribution of sizes, and the method can readily be extended to other low-Reynolds-number-flow problems.

Collisional motion of a granular material composed of rough inelastic spheres is analysed on the basis of the kinetic Boltzmann–Enskog equation. The Chapman–Enskog method for gas kinetic theory is modified to derive the Euler-like hydrodynamic equations for a system of moving spheres, possessing constant roughness and inelasticity. The solution is obtained by employing a general isotropic expression for the singlet distribution function, dependent upon the spatial gradients of averaged hydrodynamic properties. This solution form is shown to be appropriate for description of rapid shearless motions of granular materials, in particular vibrofluidized regimes induced by external vibrations.

The existence of the hydrodynamic state of evolution of a granular medium, where the Euler-like equations are valid, is delineated in terms of the particle roughness, β, and restitution, e, coefficients. For perfectly elastic spheres this state is shown to exist for all values of particle roughness, i.e. − 1≤β≤1. However, for inelastically colliding granules the hydrodynamic state exists only when the particle restitution coefficient exceeds a certain value em(β)< 1.

In contrast with the previous results obtained by approximate moment methods, the partition of the random-motion kinetic energy of inelastic rough particles between rotational and translational modes is shown to be strongly affected by the particle restitution coefficient. The effect of increasing inelasticity of particle collisions is to redistribute the kinetic energy of their random motion in favour of the rotational mode. This is shown to significantly affect the energy partition law, with respect to the one prevailing in a gas composed of perfectly elastic spheres of arbitrary roughness. In particular, the translational specific heat of a gas composed of inelastically colliding (e = 0.6) granules differs from its value for elastic particles by as much as 55 %.

It is shown that the hydrodynamic Euler-like equation, describing the transport and evolution of the kinetic energy of particle random motion, contains energy sink terms of two types (both, however, stemming from the non-conservative nature of particle collisions) : (i) the term describing energy losses in incompressibly flowing gas; (ii) the terms accounting for kinetic energy loss (or gain) associated with the work of pressure forces, leading to gas compression (or expansion). The approximate moment methods are shown to yield the Euler-like energy equation with an incorrect energy sink term of type (ii), associated with the ‘dense gas effect’. Another sink term of the same type, but associated with the energy relaxation process occurring within compressed granular gases, was overlooked in all previous studies.

The speed of sound waves propagating in a granular gas is analysed in the limits of low and high granular gas densities. It is shown that the particle collisional properties strongly affect the speed of sound in dense granular media. This dependence is manifested via the kinetic energy sink terms arising from gas compression. Omission of the latter terms in the evaluation of the speed of sound results in an error, which in the dense granular gas limit is shown to amount to a several-fold factor.

Intermittency effects, in magnitude comparable to the early Batchelor & Townsend (1949) experiments, are studied for stationary, homogeneous, isotropic turbulence by means of a direct spectral simulation on a 643 lattice. The turbulence is kept stationary by a coupling to modes external to the spectral code that model the straining effects of large scales on smaller ones. The rate of energy input and viscosity are free parameters. The interrelations of intermittency and parametrizations of the large scales are discussed. Small-scale universality and a local cascade are necessary if comprehensive models of the large scales are to prove tractable. An iterative method to determine the otherwise arbitrary parameters in such a scheme is proposed but not implemented.

The equations for energy and vorticity balance are checked as a function of wave-number. The nonlinear (e.g. vortex stretching) terms in the spectral simulation account for nearly 95% of the vorticity production with the external forcing supplying the rest. The non-dimensionalized one-dimensional energy spectrum agrees well with experiments in the dissipation range at Rλ ∼ 100. The locality of the energy cascade in wavenumber is also examined.

First- and second-derivative flatness factors of order 4·5-5·0 and 9·0 respectively are found under stationary conditions with bursts to higher values. Resolution and other systematic errors are explored by extensive runs with a 323 code; de-aliasing all higher-order derivative statistics; and recomputing selected averages after zeroing in succession the highest- and lowest-wavenumber bands. The latter analysis is of some relevance to the experimental problem of gauging how a finite-length hot wire biases a flatness measurement. A host of other higher-order derivative statistics are computed, including the vorticity/rate of strain correlations. Three-dimensional plots of the vorticity reveal persistent and extended tubes, sheets and blobs.

Rivers are capable of transporting their own bed material without altering their width. However, a naive extension of the threshold theory of canals in coarse alluvium to straight reaches of gravel rivers leads to the stable-channel paradox: transport of bed material is incompatible with a stable width. In this paper singular perturbation techniques are used to obtain a bed stress distribution which allows a mobile bed but immobile banks at bankfull or dominant discharge. This result is used to obtain regime relations for straight rivers with bed and banks composed of coarse gravel.

The analysis, although dependent on a series of approximate assumptions for Reynolds-stress closure and sediment transport, provides reasonable agreement with data.

We explain the emergence of organized structures in two-dimensional turbulent flows by a theory of equilibrium statistical mechanics. This theory takes into account all the known constants of the motion for the Euler equations. The microscopic states are all the possible vorticity fields, while a macroscopic state is defined as a probability distribution of vorticity at each point of the domain, which describes in a statistical sense the fine-scale vorticity fluctuations. The organized structure appears as a state of maximal entropy, with the constraints of all the constants of the motion. The vorticity field obtained as the local average of this optimal macrostate is a steady solution of the Euler equation. The variational problem provides an explicit relationship between stream function and vorticity, which characterizes this steady state. Inertial structures in geophysical fluid dynamics can be predicted, using a generalization of the theory to potential vorticity.

A computer-controlled four-roll mill is used to examine two transient modes of deformation of a liquid drop: elongation in a steady flow and interfacial-tension-driven motion which occurs after the flow is stopped abruptly. For modest extensions, drop breakup does not occur with the flow on, but may occur following cessation of the flow as a result of deterministic motions associated with internal pressure gradients established by capillary forces. These relaxation and breakup phenomena depend on the initial drop shape and the relative viscosities of the two fluids. Capillary-wave instabilities at the fluid-fluid interface are observed only for highly elongated drops. This study is a natural extension of G. I. Taylor's original studies of the deformation and burst of droplets in well-defined flow fields.

The role of streamwise vortex structures in the near-field (x/d < 10) evolution of a round jet is examined. In free shear layers the streamwise vorticity develops into Bernal-Roshko structures which are streamwise vortex pairs. Similar structures are shown to exist in round jets. These structures, which evolve and amplify in the braid region between primary vortical structures, are shown to drastically alter the entrainment process in the near field and to increase the rate at which fluid is entrained into the jet. As the flow evolves downstream, the efficiency of the streamwise vorticity in entraining fluid increases relative to that of the azimuthal vorticity. Beyond the end of the potential core regime, the entrainment process is mainly controlled by streamwise vorticity. These processes are identified via flow visualization and confirmed by detailed global entrainment measurements.

A theoretical model is developed for the motion of a human red blood cell in a shear field. The model consists of a tank-treading ellipsoidal membrane encapsulating an incompressible Newtonian liquid immersed in a plane shear flow of another incom- pressible Newtonian liquid. Equilibrium and energy considerations lead to a solution for the motion of the particle that depends on the ellipsoidal-axis ratios and the ratio of the inner- to outer-liquid viscosities. The effect of variation in these parameters is explored and it is shown that, depending on their values, one of two types of overall motion is exhibited: a steady stationary-orientation motion or an unsteady flipping motion. A qualitative agreement of the predicted behaviour of the model with experi- mental observations on red blood cells is found.

Vortex shedding from spheres has been studied in the Reynolds number range 400 < Re < 5 × 106. At low Reynolds numbers, i.e. up to Re = 3 × 103, the values of the Strouhal number as a function of Reynolds number measured by Möller (1938) have been confirmed using water flow. The lower critical Reynolds number, first reported by Cometta (1957), was found to be Re = 6 × 103. Here a discontinuity in the relationship between the Strouhal and Reynolds numbers is obvious. From Re = 6 × 103 to Re = 3 × 105 strong periodic fluctuations in the wake flow were observed. Beyond the upper critical Reynolds number (Re = 3.7 × 105) periodic vortex shedding could not be detected by the present measurement techniques.

The hot-wire measurements indicate that the signals recorded simultaneously at different positions on the 75° circle (normal to the flow) show a phase shift. Thus it appears that the vortex separation point rotates around the sphere. An attempt is made to interpret this experimental evidence.

Experiments on fully developed turbulent flow in a channel which is rotating at a steady rate about a spanwise axis are described. The Coriolis force components in the region of two-dimensional mean flow affect both local and global stability. Three stability-related phenomena were observed or inferred: (i) the reduction (increase) of the rate of wall-layer streak bursting in locally stabilized (destabilized) wall layers; (ii) the total suppression of transition to turbulence in a stabilized layer; (iii) the development of large-scale roll cells on the de-stabilized side of the channel by growth of a Taylor-Gortler vortex instability.

An appropriate local stability parameter is the Richardson number formulated by Bradshaw (1969) for this case and the analogous cases of flow over curved walls and of shear-layer flow with density stratification. Local effects of rotational stabilization, such as reduction of the turbulent stress in wall layers, can be related to the local Richardson number in a simple way. This paper not only investigates this effect, but also, by methods of flow visualization, exposes some of the underlying structure changes caused by rotation.

Model equations that govern the evolution of internal gravity waves at the interface of two immiscible inviscid fluids are derived. These models follow from the original Euler equations under the sole assumption that the waves are long compared to the undisturbed thickness of one of the fluid layers. No smallness assumption on the wave amplitude is made. Both shallow and deep water configurations are considered, depending on whether the waves are assumed to be long with respect to the total undisturbed thickness of the fluids or long with respect to just one of the two layers, respectively. The removal of the traditional weak nonlinearity assumption is aimed at improving the agreement with the dynamics of Euler equations for large-amplitude waves. This is obtained without compromising much of the simplicity of the previously known weakly nonlinear models. Compared to these, the fully nonlinear models' most prominent feature is the presence of additional nonlinear dispersive terms, which coexist with the typical linear dispersive terms of the weakly nonlinear models. The fully nonlinear models contain the Korteweg–de Vries (KdV) equation and the Intermediate Long Wave (ILW) equation, for shallow and deep water configurations respectively, as special cases in the limit of weak nonlinearity and unidirectional wave propagation. In particular, for a solitary wave of given amplitude, the new models show that the characteristic wavelength is larger and the wave speed is smaller than their counterparts for solitary wave solutions of the weakly nonlinear equations. These features are compared and found in overall good agreement with available experimental data for solitary waves of large amplitude in two-fluid systems.

The singularity at the contact line which is present when the usual fluidmechanical modelling assumptions are made is removed by permitting the fluid to slip along the wall. The aim of this study is to assess the sensitivity of the overall flow field to the form of the slip boundary condition. Explicit solutions are obtained for three different slip boundary conditions. Two length scales emerge: the slip length scale and the meniscus length scale. It is found that on the slip length scale the flow fields are quite different; however, when viewed on the meniscus length scale, i.e. the length scale on which almost all fluidmechanical measurements are made, all of the flow fields appear the same. It is found that the characteristic of the slip boundary condition which affects the overall flow field is the magnitude of the slip length.

The equations governing the boundary layer on a spherical gas bubble rising steadily through liquid of small viscosity are derived. These equations are linear are linear and are solved in closed form. The boundary layer separates at the rear stagnation point of the bubble to form a thin wake, whose structure is determined. Thus the drag force can be calculated from the momentum defect. The value obtained is 12πaaUμ, where a is the bubble radius and U the terminal velocity, and this agrees with the result of Levich (1949) who argued from the viscous dissipation in the potential flow round the bubble. The next term in an expansion of the drag in descending fractional powers of R is found and the results compared with experiment.

Compressible flows with r.m.s. velocities of the order of the speed of sound are studied with direct numerical simulations using a pseudospectral method. We concentrate on turbulent homogeneous flows in the two-dimensional case. The fluid obeys the Navier-Stokes equations for a perfect gas, and viscous terms are included explicitly. No modelling of small scales is used. We show that the behaviour of the flow differs sharply at low compared with high r.m.s. Mach number Ma, with a transition at Ma = 0.3. In the large scales, temporal exchanges between longitudinal and solenoidal modes of energy retain an acoustical character; they lead to a slowing down of the decrease of the Mach number with time, which occurs with interspersed plateaux corresponding to quiescent periods. When the flow is initially supersonic, the small scales are dominated by shocks behind which vortices form. This vortex production is particularly prominent when two strong shocks collide, with the onset of shear turbulence in the region downstream of the collision. However, at the resolutions reached by our code on a 256 × 256 uniform grid, this mechanism proves insufficient to bring vortices into equipartition with shocks in the small-scale tail of the energy spectrum.
