In flows around three-dimensional surface obstacles in laminar or turbulent streamsthere are a number of points where the shear stress or where two or more component,s of the mean velocity are zero. In the first part of this paper we summarize and extend the kinematical theory for the flow near these points, particularly by emphasizing the topological classification of these points as nodes or saddles. We show that the zero-shear-stress points on the surface and on the obstacle must be such that the sum of the nodes ΣN and the sum of the saddles Σs satisfy \[ \Sigma_N -\Sigma_S = 0. \] If the obstacle has a hole through it, such as a passageway under a building, \[ \Sigma_N -\Sigma_S =-2. \] If the surface is a junction between two pipes, \[ \Sigma_N -\Sigma_S =-1. \] We also consider, in two-dimensional plane sections of the flow, the points where the components of the mean velocity parallel to the planes are zero, both in the flow and near surfaces cutting the sections. The latter points are half-nodes N′ or half-saddles S′. We find that \[ (\Sigma_N +{\textstyle\frac{1}{2}}\Sigma_{N^{\prime}}-(\Sigma_{S^{\prime}}+{\textstyle\frac{1}{2}}\Sigma_{S^{\prime}}) = 1-n, \] where n is the connectivity of the section of the flow considered.

In the second part new flow-visualization studies of laminar and turbulent flows around cuboids and axisymmetric humps (i.e. model hills) are reported. A new method of obtaining a high resolution of the surface shear-stress lines was used. These studies show how enumerating the nodes and saddle points acts as a check on the inferred flow pattern.

Two specific conclusions drawn from these studies are that:

1. for all the flows we observed, there are no closed surfaces of mean streamlines around the separated flows behind three-dimensional surface obstacles, which con-tradicts most of the previous suggestions for such flows (e.g. Halitsky 1968);

2. the separation streamline on the centre-line of a three-dimensional bluff obstacle does not, in general, reattach to the surface.

Using automated laser-Doppler methods we have identified four distinct sequences of instabilities leading to turbulent convection at low Prandtl number (2·5–5·0), in fluid layers of small horizontal extent. Contour maps of the structure of the time-averaged velocity field, in conjunction with high-resolution power spectral analysis, demonstrate that several mean flows are stable over a wide range in the Rayleigh number R, and that the sequence of time-dependent instabilities depends on the mean flow. A number of routes to non-periodic motion have been identified by varying the geometrical aspect ratio, Prandtl number, and mean flow. Quasi-periodic motion at two frequencies leads to phase locking or entrainment, as identified by a step in a graph of the ratio of the two frequencies. The onset of non-periodicity in this case is associated with the loss of entrainment as R is increased. Another route to turbulence involves successive subharmonic (or period doubling) bifurcations of a periodic flow. A third route contains a well-defined regime with three generally incommensurate frequencies and no broadband noise. The spectral analysis used to demonstrate the presence of three frequencies has a precision of about one part in 104 to 105. Finally, we observe a process of intermittent non-periodicity first identified by Libchaber & Maurer at lower Prandtl number. In this case the fluid alternates between quasi-periodic and non-periodic states over a finite range in R. Several of these processes are also manifested by rather simple mathematical models, but the complicated dependence on geometrical parameters, Prandtl number, and mean flow structure has not been explained.

We describe the results of a numerical investigation of the dynamics of breakup of streams of immiscible fluids in the confined geometry of a microfluidic T-junction. We identify three distinct regimes of formation of droplets: squeezing, dripping and jetting, providing a unifying picture of emulsification processes typical for microfluidic systems. The squeezing mechanism of breakup is particular to microfluidic systems, since the physical confinement of the fluids has pronounced effects on the interfacial dynamics. In this regime, the breakup process is driven chiefly by the buildup of pressure upstream of an emerging droplet and both the dynamics of breakup and the scaling of the sizes of droplets are influenced only very weakly by the value of the capillary number. The dripping regime, while apparently homologous to the unbounded case, is also significantly influenced by the constrained geometry; these effects modify the scaling law for the size of the droplets derived from the balance of interfacial and viscous stresses. Finally, the jetting regime sets in only at very high flow rates, or with low interfacial tension, i.e. higher values of the capillary number, similar to the unbounded case.

The spectra and correlations of the velocity fluctuations in turbulent channels, especially above the buffer layer, are analysed using new direct numerical simulations with friction Reynolds numbers up to Re$_{\tau}\,{=}\,1900$. It is found, and explained, that their scaling is anomalous in several respects, including a square-root behaviour of their width with respect to their length, and a velocity scaling of the largest modes with the centreline velocity $U_c$. It is shown that this implies a logarithmic correction to the $k^{-1}$ energy spectrum, and that it leads to a scaling of the total fluctuation intensities away from the wall which agrees well with the mixed scaling of de Graaff & Eaton (2000) at intermediate Reynolds numbers, but which tends to a pure scaling with $U_c$ at very large ones.

In a large range of Reynolds numbers, 6 × 104 < Re < 5 × 106, the flow around single cylinders with smooth surfaces has been investigated. The high values of the Reynolds numbers were obtained in a test channel which could be pressurized up to 40 bar of static pressure. New experiments were performed to measure the local pressure and skin friction distribution around the cylinder. From these results the total drag, the pressure drag and the friction drag were calculated. By means of the skin friction distribution the position of the separation points, separation bubbles or transition points can be localized. These data allow one to define three states of the flow: the subcritical flow, where the boundary layer separates laminarly; the critical flow, in which a separation bubble, followed by a turbulent reattachment, occurs; and the supercritical flow, where an immediate transition from the laminar to the turbulent boundary layer is observed at a critical distance from the stagnation point. According to the total drag coefficient the values found in this paper connect the subcritical region represented by the measurements of Wieselsberger (1923) and Fage & Warsap (1930) with the supercritical range in which Roshko (1961) carried out his experiments.

The inertial migration of a small rigid sphere translating parallel to the walls within a channel flow at large channel Reynolds numbers is investigated. The method of matched asymptotic expansions is used to solve the equations governing the disturbance flow past a particle at small particle Reynolds number and to evaluate the lift. Both neutrally and non-neutrally buoyant particles are considered. The wall-induced inertia is significant in the thin layers near the walls where the lift is close to that calculated for linear shear flow, bounded by a single wall. In the major portion of the flow, excluding near-wall layers, the wall effect can be neglected, and the outer flow past a sphere can be treated as unbounded parabolic shear flow. The effect of the curvature of the unperturbed velocity profile is significant, and the lift differs from the values corresponding to a linear shear flow even at large Reynolds numbers.

In a pure straining motion, elongated rigid particles in suspension are aligned parallel to the direction of the greatest principal rate of extension, provided the effect of Brownian motion is weak. If the suspension is dilute, in the sense that the particles are hydrodynamically independent, each particle of length 2l makes a contribution to the bulk deviatoric stress which is of roughly the same order of magnitude as that due to a rigid sphere of radius l. The fractional increase in the bulk stress due to the presence of the particles is thus equal to the concentration by volume multiplied by a factor of order l2/b2, where 2b is a measure of the linear dimensions of the particle cross-section. This suggests that the stress due to the particles might be relatively large, for volume fractions which are still small, with interesting implications for the behaviour of polymer solutions. However, dilute-suspension theory is not applicable in these circumstances, and so an investigation is made of the effect of interactions between particles. It is assumed that, when the average lateral spacing of particles (h) satisfies the conditions b [Lt ] h [Lt ] l, the disturbance velocity vector is parallel to the particles and varies only in the cross-sectional plane. The velocity near a particle is found to have the same functional form as for an isolated particle, and the modification to the outer flow field for one particle is determined by replacing the randomly placed neighbouring particles by an equivalent cylindrical boundary. The resulting expression for the contribution to the bulk stress due to the particles differs from that for a dilute suspension only in a minor way, viz. by the replacement of log 2l/b by log h/b, and the above suggestion is confirmed. The relative error in the expression for the stress is expected to be of order (log h/b)−1. Some recent observations by Weinberger of the stress in a suspension of glass-fibre particles for which 2l/h = 7·4 and h/2b = 7·8 do show a particle stress which is much larger than the ambient-fluid stress, although the theoretical formula is not accurate under these conditions.

In a three-dimensional simulation higher-order derivative correlations, including skewness and flatness (or kurtosis) factors, are calculated for velocity and passive scalar fields and are compared with structures in the flow. Up to 1283 grid points are used with periodic boundary conditions in all three directions to achieve Rλ to 82.9. The equations are forced to maintain steady-state turbulence and collect statistics. The scalar-derivative flatness is found to increase much faster with Reynolds number than the velocity-derivative flatness, and the velocity- and mixed-derivative skewnesses do not increase with Reynolds number. Separate exponents are found for the various fourth-order velocity-derivative correlations, with the vorticity-flatness exponent the largest. This does not support a major assumption of the lognormal and β models, but is consistent with some aspects of structural models of the small scales. Three-dimensional graphics show strong alignment between the vorticity, rate-of-strain, and scalar-gradient fields. The vorticity is concentrated in tubes with the scalar gradient and the largest principal rate of strain aligned perpendicular to the tubes. Velocity spectra, in Kolmogorov variables, collapse to a single curve and a short $-\frac{5}{3}$ spectral regime is observed.

A solution is obtained for steady, cellular convection when the Rayleigh number and the Prandtl number are large. The core of each two-dimensional cell contains a highly viscous, isothermal flow. Adjacent to the horizontal boundaries are thin thermal boundary layers. On the vertical boundaries between cells thin thermal plumes drive the viscous flow. The non-dimensional velocities and heat transfer between the horizontal boundaries are found to be functions only of the Rayleigh number. The theory is used to test the hypothesis of large scale convective cells in the earth's mantle. Using accepted values of the Rayleigh number for the earth's mantle the theory predicts the generally accepted velocity associated with continental drift. The theory also predicts values for the heat flux to the earth's surface which are in good agreement with measurements carried out on the ocean floors.

This paper is concerned with the non-linear interactions between pairs of intersecting gravity wave trains of arbitrary wavelength and direction on the surface of water whose depth is large compared with any of the wavelengths involved. An equation is set up to describe the time history of the Fourier components of the surface displacement in which are retained terms whose magnitude is of order (slope)2 relative to the linear (first-order) terms. The second-order terms give rise to Fourier components with wave-numbers and frequencies formed by the sums and differences of those of the primary components, and the amplitudes of these secondary components is always bounded in time and small in magnitude. The phase velocity of the secondary components is always different from the phase velocity of a free infinitesimal wave of the same wave-number. However, the third-order terms can give rise to tertiary components whose phase velocity is equal to the phase velocity of a free infinitesimal wave of the same wave-number, and when this condition is satisfied the amplitude of the tertiary component grows linearly with time in a resonant manner, and there is a continuing flux of potential energy from one wave-number to another. The time scale of the growth of the tertiary component is of order of the (−2)-power of the geometric mean of the primary wave slopes times the period of the tertiary wave. The Stokes permanent wave appears as a special case, in which the tertiary wave-number is the same as that of the primary, but its phase is advanced by ½π. The energy transfer to the tertiary component in this case is usually interpreted as an increase in the phase velocity of the wave.

The dynamical interactions in water of finite depth are considered briefly, and it is shown that the amplitude of the secondary components becomes large (though bounded in time) as the water depth becomes smaller than the wave-length of the longest primary wave.

The mixing of the round jet normal to a uniform crossflow is studied for a range of jet-to-crossflow velocity ratios, r, from 5 to 25. Planar laser-induced fluorescence (PLIF) of acetone vapour seeded into the jet is used to acquire quantitative two-dimensional images of the scalar concentration field. Emphasis is placed on r=10 and r=20 and a few select images are acquired up to r=200. The Reynolds number based on the jet exit diameter, d, and the exit velocity varies from 8400 to 41 500. Images are acquired for conditions in which the product rd is held constant, requiring decreasing d for increasing r.

Results from this experimental study concern structural events of the vortex interaction region, and mixing and mean centreline concentration decay in the near and far fields. The results cover all three regions of the transverse jet, and suggest that the jet scales with three length scales: d, rd and r2d.

Events within the vortex interaction region display d-scaling, including the crossflow boundary layer separation and roll-up. Over the range of velocity ratios studied, the vortex interaction region shows r-dependent variations in the flow field, including the emergence of jet fluid in the wake structures for r>10 and a slower development of the counter-rotating vortex pair (CVP) in higher-r jets.

The trajectory and physical dimension of the jet in both the near and far field display rd-scaling. The near field is characterized by a centreline concentration decay along the centreline coordinate s of s−1.3, different from the decay rate (s−1) of the free jet. When normalized by rd, the decay of each velocity-ratio jet branches away from the s−1.3 decay, approaching a decay of s−2/3, a rate predicted by modelling efforts. The branch points represent a transition in the flow field from enhanced mixing to reduced mixing compared to the free jet. When normalized by r2d, the branch points occur at a uniform jet position, s/r2d=0.3, which is viewed to be the division between the near and far fields. Self-similarity is not seen in the near field, but may be present in the far field.

The view of the branch points as a place of transition in the flow is supported by the probability density function (p.d.f.) of concentration along the upper edge of the jet. Before the branch points, the p.d.f.s are non-marching in character, and after the branch points, they are tilted in character.

Instantaneously, the CVP is asymmetric in shape and concentration. End views reveal extensive motion of the CVP and plan views show this motion can occur in both axisymmetric and sinusoidal motion. Ensemble-averaged images show the jet concentration is asymmetric about the centreline plane.

An experimental investigation of the flow around surface-mounted cubes in both uniform, irrotational and sheared, turbulent flows is described. The shear flow was a simulated atmospheric boundary layer with a height ten times the body dimension. Measurements of body surface pressures and mean and fluctuating velocities within the wake are presented. In the latter case a pulsed-wire anemometer was used extensively since the turbulent intensities were much too high for effective use of more standard instrumentation. The clear effects of upstream turbulence and shear on the wake flow are described, comparisons with the somewhat sparse measurements of previous workers are made and the relevance of recent theoretical attempts to describe the flow, as opposed to numerical calculation techniques to predict it, is briefly discussed.

The particle paths of the Arnold-Beltrami-Childress (ABC) flows \[ u = (A \sin z+ C \cos y, B \sin x + A \cos z, C \sin y + B \cos x). \] are investigated both analytically and numerically. This three-parameter family of spatially periodic flows provides a simple steady-state solution of Euler's equations. Nevertheless, the streamlines have a complicated Lagrangian structure which is studied here with dynamical systems tools. In general, there is a set of closed (on the torus, T3) helical streamlines, each of which is surrounded by a finite region of KAM invariant surfaces. For certain values of the parameters strong resonances occur which disrupt the surfaces. The remaining space is occupied by chaotic particle paths: here stagnation points may occur and, when they do, they are connected by a web of heteroclinic streamlines.

When one of the parameters A, B or C vanishes the flow is integrable. In the neighbourhood, perturbation techniques can be used to predict strong resonances. A systematic search for integrable cases is done using Painlevé tests, i.e. studying complex-time singularities of fluid-particle trajectories. When ABC ≠ 0 recursive clustering of complex time singularities occurs that seems characteristic of non-integrable behaviour.

The investigation is concentrated on two important quantities – the Strouhal number and the mean base suction coefficient, both measured at the mid-span position. Reynolds numbers from about 50 to 4 × 104 were investigated. Different aspect ratios, at low blockage ratios, were achieved by varying the distance between circular end plates (end plate diameter ratios between 10 and 30). It was not possible, by using these end plates in uniform flow and at very large aspect ratios, to produce parallel shedding all over the laminar shedding regime. However, parallel shedding at around mid-span was observed throughout this regime in cases when there was a slight but symmetrical increase in the free-stream velocity towards both ends of the cylinder. At higher Re, the results at different aspect ratios were compared with those of a ‘quasi-infinite cylinder’ and the required aspect ratio to reach conditions independent of this parameter, within the experimental uncertainties, are given. For instance, aspect ratios as large as L/D = 60–70 were needed in the range Re ≈ 4 × 103–104. With the smallest relative end plate diameter and for aspect ratios smaller than 7, a bi-stable flow switching between regular vortex shedding and ‘irregular flow’ was found at intermediate Reynolds number ranges in the subcritical regime (Re ≈ 2 × 103).

Direct numerical simulations of turbulent flows over riblet-mounted surfaces are performed to educe the mechanism of drag reduction by riblets. The computed drag on the riblet surfaces is in good agreement with the existing experimental data. The mean-velocity profiles show upward and downward shifts in the log–law for drag-decreasing and drag-increasing cases, respectively. Turbulence statistics above the riblets are computed and compared with those above a flat plate. Differences in the mean-velocity profile and turbulence quantities are found to be limited to the inner region of the boundary layer. Velocity and vorticity fluctuations as well as the Reynolds shear stresses above the riblets are reduced in drag-reducing configurations. Quadrant analysis indicates that riblets mitigate the positive Reynolds-shear-stress-producing events in drag-reducing configurations. From examination of the instantaneous flow fields, a drag reduction mechanism by riblets is proposed: riblets with small spacings reduce viscous drag by restricting the location of the streamwise vortices above the wetted surface such that only a limited area of the riblets is exposed to the downwash of high-speed fluid that the vortices induce.

In this paper, we investigate the behaviour of a wave as it climbs a sloping beach. Explicit solutions of the equations of the non-linear inviscid shallow-water theory are obtained for several physically interesting wave-forms. In particular it is shown that waves can climb a sloping beach without breaking. Formulae for the motions of the instantaneous shoreline as well as the time histories of specific wave-forms are presented.

Numerical solutions have been obtained for steady viscous flow past a circular cylinder at Reynolds numbers up to 300. A new technique is proposed for the boundary condition at large distances and an iteration scheme has been developed, based on Newton's method, which circumvents the numerical difficulties previously encountered around and beyond a Reynolds number of 100. Some new trends are observed in the solution shortly before a Reynolds number of 300. As vorticity starts to recirculate back from the end of the wake region, this region becomes wider and shorter. Other flow quantities like position of separation point, drag, pressure and vorticity distributions on the body surface appear to be quite unaffected by this reversal of trends.

A realistic theoretical model of steady Langmuir circulations is constructed. Vorticity in the wind direction is generated by the Stokes drift of the gravity-wave field acting upon spanwise vorticity deriving from the wind-driven current. We believe that the steady Langmuir circulations represent a balance between this generating mechanism and turbulent dissipation.

Nonlinear equations governing the motion are derived under fairly general conditions. Analytical and numerical solutions are sought for the case of a directional wave spectrum consisting of a single pair of gravity waves propagating at equal and opposite angles to the wind direction. Also, a statistical analysis, based on linearized equations, is developed for more general directional wave spectra. This yields an estimate of the average spacing of windrows associated with Langmuir circulations. The latter analysis is applied to a particular example with simple properties, and produces an expected windrow spacing of rather more than twice the length of the dominant gravity waves.

The relevance of our model is assessed with reference to known observational features, and the evidence supporting its applicability is promising.

An extensive experimental investigation of the binary collision dynamics of water drops for size ratios of 1. 0.75, and 0.5, for the Weber-number range of 1 to 100, and for all impact parameters is reported. Two different types of separating collisions, namely reflexive and stretching separations, are identified. Reflexive separation is found to occur for near head-on collisions, while stretching separation occurs for large-impact-parameter collisions. The boundaries between both of the separating collisions and coalescence collision are found experimentally. Theoretical models for predictions of the reflexive and stretching separation are also given.

The static state of a horizontal layer of fluid heated from below may become unstable. If the layer is infinitely large in horizontal extent, the Boussinesq equations admit many different steady solutions. A systematic method is presented here which yields the finite-amplitude steady solutions by means of successive approximations. It turns out that not every solution of the linear problem is an approximation to the non-linear problem, yet there are still an infinite number of finite amplitude solutions. A similar procedure has been applied to the stability problem for these steady finite amplitude solutions with the result that three-dimensional solutions are unstable but there is a class of two-dimensional flows which are stable. The problem has been treated for both rigid and free boundaries.
