We study the multi-selection version of the so-called odds theorem by Bruss (2000). We observe a finite number of independent 0/1 (failure/success) random variables sequentially and want to select the last success. We derive the optimal selection rule when m (≥ 1) selection chances are given and find that the optimal rule has the form of a combination of multiple odds-sums. We provide a formula for computing the maximum probability of selecting the last success when we have m selection chances and also provide closed-form formulae for m = 2 and 3. For m = 2, we further give the bounds for the maximum probability of selecting the last success and derive its limit as the number of observations goes to ∞. An interesting implication of our result is that the limit of the maximum probability of selecting the last success for m = 2 is consistent with the corresponding limit for the classical secretary problem with two selection chances.

In this note we deal with the allocation of independent and identical active redundancies to a k-out-of-n system with the usual stochastic order among its independent components. The optimal policy is proved both to assign more redundancies to the weaker component and to majorize all other policies. This improves the corresponding one in Hu and Wang (2009) and serves as a nice supplement to that in Misra, Dhariyal and Gupta (2009) as well.

Motivated by a problem arising in the mining industry, we present a first study of the energy required to reduce a unit mass fragment by consecutively using several devices. Two devices are considered, which we represent as different stochastic fragmentation processes. Following the self-similar energy model introduced in Bertoin and Martínez (2005), we compute the average energy required to attain a size η0 with this two-device procedure. We then asymptotically compare, as η0 goes to 0 or 1, its energy requirement with that of individual fragmentation processes. In particular, we show that, for a certain range of parameters of the fragmentation processes and of their energy cost functions, the consecutive use of two devices can be asymptotically more efficient than using each of them separately, or vice versa.

Gibbs fields are constructed and studied which correspond to systems of real-valued spins (e.g. systems of interacting anharmonic oscillators) indexed by the vertices of unbounded degree graphs of a certain type, for which the Gaussian Gibbs fields need not be existing. In these graphs, the vertex degree growth is controlled by a summability requirement formulated with the help of a generalized Randić index. In particular, it is proven that the Gibbs fields obey uniform integrability estimates, which are then used in the study of the topological properties of the set of Gibbs fields. In the second part, a class of graphs is introduced in which the mentioned summability is obtained by assuming that the vertices of large degree are located at large distances from each other. This is a stronger version of the metric property employed in Bassalygo and Dobrushin (1986).

In this paper we obtain several mixture representations of the reliability function of the inactivity time of a coherent system under the condition that the system has failed at time t (> 0) in terms of the reliability functions of inactivity times of order statistics. Some ordering properties of the inactivity times of coherent systems with independent and identically distributed components are obtained, based on the stochastically ordered coefficient vectors between systems.

We consider a random walks system on ℤ in which each active particle performs a nearest-neighbor random walk and activates all inactive particles it encounters. The movement of an active particle stops when it reaches a certain number of jumps without activating any particle. We prove that if the process relies on efficient particles (i.e. those particles with a small probability of jumping to the left) being placed strategically on ℤ, then it might survive, having active particles at any time with positive probability. On the other hand, we may construct a process that dies out eventually almost surely, even if it relies on efficient particles. That is, we discuss what happens if particles are initially placed very far away from each other or if their probability of jumping to the right tends to 1 but not fast enough.

In this paper we develop an explicit formula that allows us to compute the first k moments of the random count of a pattern in a multistate sequence generated by a Markov source. We derive efficient algorithms that allow us to deal with any pattern (low or high complexity) in any Markov model (homogeneous or not). We then apply these results to the distribution of DNA patterns in genomic sequences, and we show that moment-based developments (namely Edgeworth's expansion and Gram-Charlier type-B series) allow us to improve the reliability of common asymptotic approximations, such as Gaussian or Poisson approximations.

In this paper, the componentwise increasing convex order, the upper orthant order, the upper orthant convex order, and the increasing directionally convex order for random vectors are generalized to hierarchical classes of integral stochastic order relations. The elements of the generating classes of functions possess nonnegative partial derivatives up to some given degrees. Some properties of these new stochastic order relations are studied. Particular attention is paid to the comparison of weighted sums of the respective components of ordered random vectors. By providing a unified derivation of standard multivariate stochastic orderings, the present paper shows how some well-known results derive from a common principle.

The inverse stochastic dominance of degree r is a stochastic order of interest in several branches of economics. We discuss it in depth, the central point being the characterization in terms of the weak r-majorization of the vectors of expected order statistics. The weak r-majorization (a notion introduced in the paper) is a natural extension of the classical (reverse) weak majorization of Hardy, Littlewood and Pòlya. This work also shows the equivalence between the continuous majorization (of higher order) and the discrete r-majorization. In particular, our results make it clear that the cases r = 1, 2 differ substantially from those with r ≥ 3, a fact observed earlier by Muliere and Scarsini (1989), among other authors. Motivated by this fact, we introduce new stochastic orderings, as well as new social inequality indices to compare the distribution of the wealth in two populations, which could be considered as natural extensions of the first two dominance rules and the S-Gini indices, respectively.

We consider a preferential duplication model for growing random graphs, extending previous models of duplication graphs by selecting the vertex to be duplicated with probability proportional to its degree. We show that a special case of this model can be analysed using the same stochastic approximation as for vertex-reinforced random walks, and show that ‘trapping’ behaviour can occur, such that the descendants of a particular group of initial vertices come to dominate the graph.

In this paper we study the size of the largest clique ω(G(n, α)) in a random graph G(n, α) on n vertices which has power-law degree distribution with exponent α. We show that, for ‘flat’ degree sequences with α > 2, with high probability, the largest clique in G(n, α) is of a constant size, while, for the heavy tail distribution, when 0 < α < 2, ω(G(n, α)) grows as a power of n. Moreover, we show that a natural simple algorithm with high probability finds in G(n, α) a large clique of size (1 − o(1))ω(G(n, α)) in polynomial time.

It is known that the transport capacity of a dense wireless ad hoc network with n nodes scales like √n. We show that the transport capacity divided by √n approaches a nonrandom limit with probability 1 when the nodes are uniformly distributed on the unit square. To show the existence of the limit, we prove that the transport capacity under the protocol model is a subadditive Euclidean functional and use the machinery of subadditive functions in the spirit of Steele.

Let f be a probability density function on (a, b) ⊂ (0, ∞), and consider the class Cf of all probability density functions of the form Pf, where P is a polynomial. Assume that if X has its density in Cf then the equilibrium probability density x ↦ P(X > x) / E(X) also belongs to Cf: this happens, for instance, when f(x) = Ce−λx or f(x) = C(b − x)λ−1. We show in the present paper that these two cases are the only possibilities. This surprising result is achieved with an unusual tool in renewal theory, by using ideals of polynomials.

We study the optimal liquidation strategy for a call spread in the case when an investor, who does not hedge, believes in a volatility that differs from the implied volatility. The liquidation problem is formulated as an optimal stopping problem, which we solve explicitly. We also provide a sensitivity analysis with respect to the model parameters.

In this paper we further investigate the problem considered by Mizuno (2006) in the special case of identically distributed signals. Specifically, we first propose an alternative sufficient condition of crossing type for the convex order to hold between the conditional expectations given signal. Then, we prove that the bivariate (2,1)-increasing convex order ensures that the conditional expectations are ordered in the convex sense. Finally, the L2 distance between the quantity of interest and its conditional expectation given signal (or expected conditional variance) is shown to decrease when the strength of the dependence increases (as measured by the (2,1)-increasing convex order).

For random variables with values on binary metric trees, the definition of the expected value can be generalized to the notion of a barycenter. To estimate the barycenter from tree-valued data, the so-called inductive mean is constructed recursively using the weighted interpolation between the current mean and a new data point. We show the strong consistency of the inductive mean, but also that it, somewhat peculiarly, converges towards the true barycenter with different rates, and asymptotic distributions depending on the small variations of the underlying distribution.

A dynamic model for a random network evolving in continuous time is defined, where new vertices are born and existing vertices may die. The fitness of a vertex is defined as the accumulated in-degree of the vertex and a new vertex is connected to an existing vertex with probability proportional to a function b of the fitness of the existing vertex. Furthermore, a vertex dies at a rate given by a function d of its fitness. Using results from the theory of general branching processes, an expression for the asymptotic empirical fitness distribution {pk} is derived and analyzed for a number of specific choices of b and d. When b(i) = i + α and d(i) = β, that is, linear preferential attachment for the newborn and random deaths, then pk ∼ k-(2+α). When b(i) = i + 1 and d(i) = β(i + 1), with β < 1, then pk ∼ (1 + β)−k, that is, if the death rate is also proportional to the fitness, then the power-law distribution is lost. Furthermore, when b(i) = i + 1 and d(i) = β(i + 1)γ, with β, γ < 1, then logpk ∼ -kγ, a stretched exponential distribution. The momentaneous in-degrees are also studied and simulations suggest that their behaviour is qualitatively similar to that of the fitnesses.

Expectations of unbounded functions of dependent nonnegative integer-valued random variables are approximated by the expectations of the functions of independent copies of these random variables. The Lindeberg method is used.
