Introduction. Damage of citrus fruits by the Mediterranean fruit fly Ceratitis capitata Weid. results in economic losses in Nigeria. The majority of the citrus producers are small-holders who are yet to adopt standard citrus production practices. A trial was therefore established in a savannah zone of Nigeria with a Southern Guinea agroecology to evaluate simple fruit fly control practices. Materials and methods. The efficacy of combining cultural practices such as removal of dropped fruits, changes of harvest period, and three applications of dimethoate/cypermethrine mixture in controlling fruit fly damage was tested on sweet orange Citrus sinensis (L.) Osbeck var. Valencia Late in 2000 and 2001. Results. Fruits attacked by C. capitata increased with fruit maturity and were positively correlated with the number of dropped fruits. Insecticide applications and removal of dropped fruits significantly reduced the number of fruits attacked by the fruit flies. Similarly, early harvesting at 50% fruit ripening significantly (P < 0.05) reduced the number of fruits attacked by the fruit flies when compared with the late harvesting at 90% ripening. The interactive effects of insecticide applications and the period of harvest significantly (P < 0.05) reduced attacks on fruits. Discussions. Judicious use of insecticides, periods of harvest and removal of fallen fruits reduce fruit fly damage. Late harvest and non-removal of fallen fruits constitute fruit fly reservoirs for the re-infestation of other clean fruits. Since the tested control methods were simple, they can be adopted by small-holders for the control of fruit flies.

Introduction. Two field experiments were conducted to investigate the effects ofpotassium (K) on plant growth, fruit yield and quality of pineapple cultivated on tropical peat soil.Materials and methods. Six levels of K: 0, 266, 532, 798, 1064 and 1330 kg $\cdot$ ha-1 K2Owere applied at each of two pineapple plantations located at two different sites. The experiments wereconducted with the Gandul cv. in a randomized complete block design with three replications. Results anddiscussion. The application of K had not any significant effect on plant height and leaf number ofpineapple at both sites. Potassium significantly influenced the fruit diameter at site 1, and fruit lengthand fruit weight at site 2. The application of 266 kg $\cdot$ ha-1 K2O resulted in the highest fruitweight and, at site 2, further increase of K declined it. Potassium had no significant effect on fruitsugar and acidity. However, at site 2, acid content tended to increase with increased K applications.Conclusion. Potassium applications at high rates tended to depress most of the growth and yieldattributes of cv. Gandul pineapple cultivated on peat soil in Malaysia.

Introduction. Mango conservation under traditional refrigeration systems is not totally efficient due to the susceptibility of this fruit to chilling injury, but controlled atmosphere (CA) in association with low temperature can improve its storability and maintain fruit quality during storage. Thus, the aim of our study was to determine the effect of CA with varied concentrations of oxygen during cold storage (12.8 ° C) of ‘Palmer’ mango fruit. Materials and methods. Mature green mango fruit were stored in atmospheres with (1%, 5%, 10%, 15% and 21%) oxygen at (12.8  ±  0.6) °C and RH ~95%) for up to 28 days. A group of fruits without CA was stored in a cold room and served as tray-stored control. Fruit ripening was carried out in ambient conditions [(25.2  ±  0.6) °C, (92.8  ±  2.4)% RH)] at intervals of 14 d. Results and discussion. Fruits stored in low-oxygen concentrations [(1%, 5% and 10%) O2] had significantly lower rates of CO2 production after 14 d of cold storage. Fruit from all treatments were considered immature after 28 d of cold storage, and the mangoes kept at (1%, 5% and 10%) O2 maintained their initial firmness (119.9–125.6 N) when compared with those stored in higher oxygen atmospheres, which underwent a substantial loss of firmness (96.8–109.1 N). At low-oxygen levels, fruit also had lower contents of soluble pectin and total soluble sugars, whereas colour parameters were not affected by the atmospheres. After transfer from CA containers to ambient conditions, even from the lowest oxygen concentrations [(1% and 5%) O2], fruit ripened normally in just 8 d without presenting any low oxygen-related injury.

Introduction. La pomme de cajou, souvent considérée comme un sous-produit de l’industrie de la noix de cajou, reste très peu valorisée. Parmi les diverses options technologiques possibles pour la clarification des jus de fruits pulpeux, la microfiltration tangentielle sur membrane minérale est un procédé particulièrement prometteur. L’objectif de notre travail a donc été d’évaluer l’intérêt de ce procédé pour la production de jus de pomme de cajou clarifié. Matériel et méthodes. Des essais de filtration ont été réalisés à 30 °C sur une installation pilote de laboratoire munie de diverses membranes tubulaires en alumine. Quatre membranes ont été testées, différenciées par le diamètre moyen de leurs pores [(0,1 ; 0,2 ; 0,8 et 1,4) µm]. Les performances (densité de flux de perméat) et la composition du jus clarifié obtenu (tannins condensés, acidité titrable, acide ascorbique, pH, turbidité, couleur et extrait sec soluble) ont été comparées pour chacune de ces membranes. L’utilisation d’un prétraitement enzymatique de liquéfaction couplé à la microfiltration a également été abordée. Résultats et discussion. Les densités de flux de perméat obtenues ont été comprises entre (36 et 79) L·h–1·m–2. Dans les conditions testées, les membranes de diamètre de pores de (0,1 et 0,2) µm ont conduit aux meilleurs résultats. Le couplage de la microfiltration avec un prétraitement enzymatique de liquéfaction a amélioré les performances de la filtration de (30 à 60) %. Toutes les membranes ont permis d’obtenir un jus parfaitement limpide dont la teneur en acide ascorbique a été très voisine de celle du jus frais. En revanche, les composés phénoliques présents en grande quantité dans le jus de pomme de cajou brut ont été presque totalement éliminés au cours de l’opération permettant ainsi de diminuer considérablement l’astringeance du jus. Conclusion. Nos travaux ont vérifié le potentiel du procédé de microfiltration tangentielle sur la production de jus clarifié de pomme de cajou. Néanmoins, avant d’envisager une future application industrielle, les conditions de traitement devront être optimisées et les qualités nutritionnelle et sensorielle du jus clarifié devront être mieux caractérisées.

Introduction. Environmental conditions and cultural practices vary considerably from one region to another. Therefore, a long-term study was carried out to investigate the horticultural adaptability and performance of ‘Olinda Valencia’ and ‘Parent Washington Navel’ orange trees on nine commercial rootstocks in the Najran area of Saudi Arabia. Materials and methods. The trees were planted in 1987 with a (6.0 × 6.0) m spacing and a density of 278 trees·ha–1. Fruit yield, fruit size, individual fruit weight, peel thickness, percent of juice, soluble solids and acid were measured. Results. Over the 7-year production period, trees on Volkamer lemon (VL), Citrus macrophylla (Cm) and rough lemon (RL) were the most productive and trees on Cleopatra mandarin (Cleo) and Swingle citrumelo (Sc) were the least productive. Trees on Sour orange (SO), Amblycarpa, Carrizo citrange (CC) and C. taiwanica (Ct) were intermediate in fruit production. The greatest fruit individual weight and largest fruit were found on trees budded on RL, VL and Cm, while the lowest fruit weight and smallest fruit were found on trees budded on Cleo and SO. Trees on RL had the lowest juice content. Fruit from trees on CC and SO accumulated the highest soluble solids and fruit from trees on Cm and Ct accumulated the lowest soluble solids. Valencia trees produced more fruit with higher juice content and soluble solids than Navel trees. Conclusion. Overall, trees on Swingle citrumelo and Cleopatra mandarin performed most poorly. Trees on vigorous rootstocks (Volkamer lemon, C. macrophylla, rough lemon) performed better and were more productive than trees on other rootstocks and Valencia trees were more profitable than Navel trees.

Introduction. Olea ferruginea Royle, generally knownas Indian olive, grows widely in the Himalayas from Kashmir to Kumaun upto an altitude of 2400 m. It is a multipurpose, zero-waste, evergreentree species. It yields a number of useful items including qualityfodder, firewood and edible fruits. The leaves, bark, roots, fruitsand seeds of this plant are used for treatment of various diseases.The fruits are also a source of olive oil. However, to the bestof our knowledge, no study has been carried out to determine theolive oil contents of the fruits and seeds of O. ferruginea andthe quality of the oils. Materials and methods. Therefore, investigationswere undertaken to determine the olive oil contents and the qualityof the oils in the fruits and seeds in terms of fatty acid composition.Four populations of O. ferruginea (Kolibehar, Saioond and Kais fromthe Kullu district, and Thalaut from the Mandi district of HimachalPradesh) were selected as the sources of fruits and seeds. Resultsand discussion. The selected sites differed in respect to theirgeographical characteristics. The olive oil content was considerablyhigher in the fruits than in the seeds. The olive oil contents inthe fruits varied from 20.67% to 27.40%, with the Thalaut population exhibitingthe highest oil content. The olive oil content in the seeds variedfrom 7.5% to 12.5%; the oil content was the lowest in fruits ofthe Saioond population and the highest in the Thalaut population.In all the populations, monounsaturated oleic acid was predominant;oleic acid ranged from 61.6% to 66.9% in the fruit oil and 64.4%to 67.2% in the seed oil. Differences in the fatty acid compositionbetween the seed and fruit oils were also seen. Conclusion. Ourstudy suggests that the fruits of O. ferruginea may be a potentialsource of olive oil. Thus, sustainable use of this potential ofthe tree could be useful in the socio-economic development and environmental conservationof the areas where it grows.

Introduction. In the southern Sudanian zone of Benin, fruit flies are major pests and responsible for considerable yield losses in mango production. The two main species of economic importance affecting mango trees in Benin are Ceratitis cosyra and Bactrocera invadens. During the 2006 crop year and across seven main cultivars, losses stood at 17% in early April and exceeded 70% in mid-June. By the middle of the crop year, over 50% of losses occurred in mango orchards. Materials and methods. The Stone and Pedigo method was used to compute the economic injury level, using variables such as pest control costs, level of losses and mango prices. Results and discussion. The Economic Injury Level (EIL) was highly variable. For the cultivar Kent, for example, it varies from (30 to 75) fruit flies captured per ha and per week, whereas for Keitt the level ranges from (24 to 57) fruit flies·ha–1·week–1. EIL variability depends among other things on market price fluctuation. This method is based on the early introduction of detection traps in mango orchards. A weekly monitoring of trapped fruit flies is used to compute the EIL and make a decision about pest control. Pest control (GF-120 in this case) is recommended if the gross returns exceed production costs. If the number of trapped fruit flies is below the EIL, a treatment is not recommended because pest control will not be profitable. Conclusion. The EIL is an accurate tool to set the optimal (economic) timing of pest control treatment in mango orchards. These preliminary results should lead to the introduction of integrated pest management (IPM) activities to deal with the fruit fly species that are threatening the profitability of mango production in central and northern Benin.

Introduction. Sweet cherryfruit is a very perishable commodity, because fruits decay and losewater rapidly after harvest as a consequence of their high respiratoryrate. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the effectof the combination of hot water plus essential oil treatments andhot water treatment alone on the quality of ‘0900 Ziraat’ sweetcherries during cold storage. Materials and methods.Fruits were divided into four groups and were treated by dippinginto water at 24 °C for 30 s (control), dipping into water at 60 °Cfor 30 s, and dipping into water at 60 °C for 30 s plus either mentholtreatment or thymol treatment. After treatments, all fruits werepacked in polypropylene bags and stored at 0–1 °C temperature and90–95% relative humidity for 45 days. Physical and chemical changeswere determined at 15-day intervals during storage. Resultsand discussion. All of the postharvest treatments improvedfruit quality characteristics compared with fruit of the control.According to the data, after 45 days of storage, combination treatments were found to be more effectivein controlling decay. The treated fruits had higher total anthocyaninand total phenolic compounds. In control fruits, total anthocyanin andtotal phenolic compounds initially showed a slight increase, buttheir accumulation significantly decreased with time.

Introduction. Edible coatings are traditionally used to improve food appearance and preservation. They act as barriers during processing, handling and storage, and do not solely retard food deterioration, enhancing its quality, but are safe due to natural biocide activity, or to the incorporation of antimicrobial compounds. The aim of this work was to evaluate the effect of A. vera, applied as an edible coating, on the changes in physicochemical parameters related to tomato fruit quality during storage in ambient conditions (22 °C and 80% RH), as well as its role in controlling microbial spoilage. Materials and methods. The changes in physical, chemical and textural properties of commercial tomato cv. Charleston were evaluated during a storage period of 17 days in ambient conditions according to their coating (treatments), or not (control), with an aqueous extract of pure A. vera or diluted (2:1) in distilled water. Results. The pure aqueous extract of Aloe vera totally inhibited the growth of Rhizoctonia solani and Alternaria alternata, while it did not show antimicrobial activity against Phytophthora parasitica. The diluted aqueous extract of Aloe vera coating maintained the quality of the tomatoes during storage in ambient conditions, delaying ripening, although it did not constitute an effective barrier against weight loss. Conclusion. Our fundamental results may be useful to breeders and postharvest technologists, as well as distributors, importers and exporters, in handling and processing tomatoes.

Introduction.Strawberry is rich in health as well as bioactive compounds, andbenefits resulting from the use of natural products rich in bioactivesubstances are receiving increased interest from the pharmaceutical,food and cosmetic industries. Materials and methods.Twenty-two cultivars of strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa Duch.) grown under a temperate ecosystemwere screened for ascorbic acid, phenolic compounds, flavonoids,anthocyanins and antioxidant activities (DPPH and FRAP assays).The phenolic content was measured by Folin-Ciocalteu reagent usinggallic acid as the standard. Antioxidant activity was determinedin terms of DPPH and FRAP assays and expressed as ascorbic acidequivalent. Total anthocyanins and total flavonoid content weredetermined using a colorimetric method. Titratable acidity (citricacid) was determined by the titration method. The average data oftwo years was analyzed using SAS 9.2 software. Results and discussion.Significant differences in the health and bioactive compounds weredetected among the cultivars. The range of ascorbic acid of thetested samples was (51.03 to 89.40) mg·100 g–1 fresh weight. Titratableacidity varied between 0.73% and 1.44%; however, total anthocyanins rangedbetween (28.24 and 43.32) mg cyanidin-3-glucoside Eq·100 g–1 freshweight. Total phenols varied from (380.10 to 888.10) mg gallic acidEq·100 g–1 and total flavonoids from (31.26 to 55.16) mg catechinEq·100 g–1. The total antioxidant activity ranged between (203.13 and471.10) mg ascorbic acid Eq·100 g–1 fresh weight for DPPH, and between (326.06and 701.13) mg ascorbic acid Eq·100 g–1 fresh weight for FRAP. Totalphenols, DPPH and FRAP showed close association; however, PCA clearlycategorized the selected cultivars intotwo broad groups.All of the diverse cultivars were clustered into two clusters which couldbe exploited for future qualitative breeding programs based on average clusterdistance and can act as gene sources for making health foods. Conclusion.The importance of our findings would be significant for farmers,breeders, consumers and industries concerning food quality, diseaseprevention and healthcare.

Introduction. Tendral type muskmelon is a winter melon fruit having a dark green skinslightly netted and crisp and a white sweet flesh with a long storage life. Materials and methods.The senescence of the mesocarp of the winter melon Cucumis melo L. (Inodorus Group) Tendral,stored at 12 °C and ca. 75% relative humidity, was investigated during 100 d after harvest.Results. During storage, starch and sucrose become increasingly hydrolysed while the levels ofreducing sugars increased. In this period the firmness and titratable acidity decreased, but an increasewas found for protein and lipoperoxide concentrations. The colour parameters L, a and b were alsoaffected, b showing the largest increase after harvest. Ethylene concentration remained minimal but theproduction of carbon dioxide varied significantly. The activities of catalase and glutathione reductaseincreased whereas ascorbate peroxidase and superoxide dismutase were inhibited. Discussion. Thesenescence of winter melon Tendral is coupled to starch and sucrose consumption and to the synthesis oforganic acids required for the respiratory metabolism. Hydrogen peroxide and superoxide also seem toaccumulate, triggering the lipoperoxidation of cellular membranes at a low rate.

Introduction. Although some of the non-formal food items consumed in Southeastern Nigeria are exotic, the indigenous products are becoming increasingly popular. There is also a growing interest among scientists in various disciplines to conduct research on nutritional, medicinal, industrial and other uses of the less studied and largely indigenous plants. Unlike the exotic fruits and seeds literature on the purely indigenous species is scanty. This paper is aimed at the documentation of some of the readily identified species producing fruits and seeds, which are considered to be endangered. Materials and methods. Selected plants producing edible fruits and seeds and considered to be endangered in Southeastern Nigeria were compiled in a list. Mature forms of the fruits and seeds were covered by means of color photographs and further categorized according to their families, growth habits, state of domestication, local names and methods of utilization. Results and discussion. Thirty plant species belonging to 19 families were recorded. The list includes 19 trees, 3 shrubs, 4 climbers and 2 rhizomatous monocots. About 27% of the species listed enjoy some degree of cultivation, while about 70% may still be found protected or wild. Up to 16% are still harvested only from the wild plants. The factors predisposing most of the species to extinction would be: loss of habitat due to deforestation and other forms of population pressure on the ecosystem; lack of interest in tree planting due to rather long gestation periods of existing genetic stock; increasing pressure and demand from few surviving stands; unsustainable harvesting methods. Conclusion. Ex situ conservation strategies, genetic and other tree improvement studies, encouragement of home garden and village forest settlement practices, and the introduction of incentives for tree planting are recommended strategies for conservation and sustainable production of the highly prized indigenous edible fruit and seeds in the area.

The product. Aonla (Emblica officinalis Geartn), the king of arid fruits, popularly known as “Indian gooseberry”, is a small-sized minor subtropical fruit grown widely in North India. India ranks first in the world in aonla area and production volume. It is considered to be a “wonder fruit for health” because of its unique properties. Uses. Aonla fruit is very useful in treating many diseases such as diabetes, cough, asthma, bronchitis, headache, dyspepsia, colic, flatulence, skin diseases, leprosy, jaundice, scurvy, diarrhea and cancer. Packaging. Different packaging materials such as nylon net, perforated polyethylene bags, ventilated corrugated fiber boxes, gunny bags, wooden crates, etc., can be used for prolonging the storage life of fruit. Storage. Refrigerated storage helps in enhancing the storage life of fruit. Value addition. There are numerous products such as aonla squash, candy, jam, chutney, etc., which are prepared from aonla fruit. Inclusion of these products in the diet definitely helps in improving the nutritional value of Indian meals. Discussion. The low cost of the products as well as good sensory, nutritional and shelf life qualities mean that processed aonla products are appropriate for commercialization. In order to obtain a good income from aonla, it must be sold immediately in the market; if not, to make profit, proper storage facilities should be available.

Introduction. Papaya is grown mainly under tropical conditions due to its requirement of high temperatures year-round. With modern greenhouse technology and production systems, the Mediterranean countries are now able to produce many tropical crops such as banana and papaya. Such technology has also increased the yield and improved fruit quality in comparison with open field production systems. Materials and methods. Our study was conducted in an unheated greenhouse in the Mediterranean region of Turkey. Three papaya cultivars (‘SS-45’, ‘BH-65’ and ‘Sel-42’) were evaluated for their physical and physicochemical properties and yield. Results. There were no significant differences in chemical properties related to fruit cultivars. Conversely, certain features of the development cycle of these three cultivars varied: BH-65 flowered at only 65.4 cm compared with SS-45 (133.8 cm) and Sel-42 (135.1 cm). Fruit set was improved for Sel-42 (63.7 fruits) compared with SS-45 (49.3 fruits) and BH-65 (31.3 fruits). The corresponding yields for Sel-42, SS-45 and BH-65 were (28.3, 21.3 and 7.8) kg per plant, respectively. The Sel-42 cultivar presented the largest fruits (weight, 460.0 g; width, 11.7 cm; length, 16.7 cm), closely followed by those of SS-45 (433.3 g, 11.3 cm and 15.3 cm, respectively). In contrast, the cultivar BH-65 produced the smallest fruits (weight, 250.0 g; width, 9.7 cm; length, 13.3 cm). The physical and chemical characteristics did not vary among the cultivars. Conclusion. Our results allow us to recommend the cultivars Sel-42 and SS-45 for greenhouse cultivation under a Mediterranean climate in Turkey.

Introduction. During maturation, vanillin is accumulated in green vanilla beans as glucovanillin; it is hydrolyzed to free vanillin by endogenous glucosidases during curing and gives the characteristic flavor of vanilla. The objective of our study was to investigate methods of curing that could greatly reduce the time to complete the process and yield cured beans that retain high concentrations of vanillin and other flavor compounds with high sensory quality rating. Materials and methods. Mature green beans were obtained from a commercial grower (Cairns, Queensland, Australia). One batch of beans was continuously sweated at 35 °C at high relative humidity (RH) for 12 d. Two further batches were blanched in water at 67 °C for 3 min, and then sweated at 45 °C at high RH for 4 d or at 35 °C for 5 d. The beans were sweated until they turned brown. Three methods of drying were evaluated: a heat pump dryer at 40 °C and RH 15%, tunnel dryer at 60 °C and RH 20%, and tunnel dryer at 60 °C and RH 10%. Vanillin was extracted from powdered samples of beans with n-pentane and dichloromethane (1:1 v/v) and assayed by HPLC. Glucovanillin was measured as total vanillin after acid hydrolysis of powdered samples of beans. Results and discussion. About 90% of the glucovanillin was converted to vanillin in non-blanched beans continuously sweated at 35 °C, but there was only 70% conversion in beans blanched at 67 °C for 3 min and sweated at 45 °C for 4 d or at 35 °C for 5 d. The sensory quality of cured beans was assessed by untrained panelists. Profiling showed that the beans sweated continuously at 35 °C had superior aroma compared with beans blanched in hot water and sweated at 45 °C or at 35 °C but the appearance of non-blanched beans was less attractive. Conclusion. The study revealed that a mild hot water blanching treatment followed by sweating at 35–45 °C and rapid drying is required to produce cured beans with excellent appearance and attractive aroma.

Introduction. Turkey potentially has a very rich source of sweet (Prunus avium) and sour (P. cerasus) cherries. P. avium is apparently native to some parts of Northern Turkey, where Giresun is located. Identification of the sweet cherry cultivars produced in Turkey will help in choosing appropriate cultivars and aid in the preservation of natural resources required for breeding studies. The most conventional method of cultivar identification is based on the assessment of morphological characteristics. However, this method is insufficient to distinguish closely related cultivars. The aims of our study were to determine the molecular profile of sweet cherry accessions grown in Giresun, Turkey, and to determine their genetic relationships. Materials and methods. In our study, we identified 44 sweet cherry accessions grown in Giresun by using genetic markers (SSR, Simple Sequence Repeat), and we determined the genetic relationships among the sweet cherry genotypes. For DNA isolation, we collected young leaves sampled on a single plant per accession, then amplification of microsatellite loci was performed. In total, ten SSR primer pairs, previously isolated from peach and sweet cherry, were used. Genetic similarity values were calculated. A cluster analysis was performed to generate a dendrogram. Results and discussion. Of the ten primers tested, six primer pairs did not result in suitable amplification products with the 44 accessions studied. The remaining four polymorphic SSR primer pairs produced 33 alleles with an average of 8.25 putative alleles per locus, ranging from 7 to 11. Depending on the accessions, similarity ratios ranged from 0.32 to 0.98, with a mean value of 0.64. In conclusion, the results obtained demonstrate a high level of polymorphism among sweet cherry genotypes from a single province in Turkey.

Introduction. Citrus is the most important fruit crop widely grown by small-scale and commercial farms in Ethiopia. However, productivity of citrus in many parts of the country is threatened by Phaeoramularia leaf and fruit spot disease caused by Phaeoramularia angolensis. Surveys and field experiments were conducted to map the geographical distribution, and to study the efficacy of different fungicides for the control of this disease. Materials and methods. Surveys were conducted in the major citrus-growing areas (south, south-west and north-west) of Ethiopia. Random sampling techniques were used for sample collection. The efficacy of different fungicides against P. angolensis was studied under a hot-spot area, based on disease incidence and severity, and marketable fruit yield. Results and discussion. Phaeoramularia leaf and fruit spot disease of citrus has been widespread throughout the south, south-west, and north-west of Ethiopia, causing complete crop failure. This disease was more severe in smallholder farmers' fields as compared with the commercial orchards. The severity of P. angolensis was varied between different citrus species and areas with different agro-ecologies. The south and south-west part of the country, characterized by high and frequent rainfall with high humidity, were severely affected by the disease. Field application of Benlate, Score and Cuproxat significantly reduced the incidence and severity of the disease and, thereby, increased marketable fruit yield. Conclusion. Phaeoramularia leaf and fruit spot disease of citrus has become widespread in many parts of Ethiopia within a short period. Further investigation on P. angolensis biology and detailed epidemiological studies are mandatory to develop a model, and, thereby, to facilitate forecasting systems for effective and sustainable management of leaf and fruit spot disease of citrus in Ethiopia.

Zones de production. Introduit au xixe siècle, le bissap (H. sabdariffa L.) est cultivé sur l’ensemble du territoire sénégalais et plus particulièrement dans les régions de Kaolack, Djourbel, Thiès, Saint-Louis et Louga. Pratiques agricoles. Dans ces régions, les superficies utilisées varient entre (0,25 et 5) ha et sont gérées pour la majeure partie par des femmes qui se regroupent de plus en plus en association ou en groupement d’intérêt économique. La plante est cultivée en période d’hivernage sur un cycle de (120 à 165) j selon des pratiques traditionnelles, généralement sans apport d’engrais. La récolte et les traitements post-récoltes sont effectués manuellement et le séchage est réalisé au soleil, souvent à même le sol. Variétés. Deux types d’H. sabdariffa sont rencontrés : le type vert et le type rouge qui comprend essentiellement quatre variétés (Vimto, Koor, CLT 92 et Thaï) aux caractéristiques différentes. Transformation. Les principales activités de transformation des calices d’H. sabdariffa sont le concassage, la production de boisson, de concentré, de confiture et de poudre instantanée. La fabrication de boisson, principale voie de transformation, effectuée sous la direction de groupements féminins est restée quasiment artisanale. Marchés. Bénéficiant d’un programme d’appui de l’État sénégalais, l’augmentation des superficies cultivées et du nombre d’acteurs économiques impliqués dans la filière de production du bissap confèrent aujourd’hui à cette culture une place importante dans la commercialisation des produits agricoles au Sénégal. L’exportation des calices secs d’H. sabdariffa vers l’Europe et les États-Unis à des prix situés entre (1 000 et 2 500) $US·t–1 augmente d’année en année.

Introduction. Banana plants (Musa sp.) face problems caused by diseases such as Yellow Sigatoka (Mycosphaerella musicola), which is responsible for significant economic losses. Through micropropagation techniques, a somaclone variety called CIEN BTA-03 resistant to this disease was obtained. The purpose of this study was to compare fruits of somaclone CIEN BTA-03 and its parental clone Williams. Materials and methods. Fruits from both clones were studied, determining shape, weight, dimensions, proportions, pulp viscosity and consistency, total solids, soluble solids, pH, titratable acidity, sugars, ash, total phenolic content and crude fiber, and analyzing their color, odor and taste. Results and discussion. Clones differed in shape, weight and [pulp/peel] ratio. Pulps also differed in viscosity, pH, and soluble solids, sugars and phenolic compound contents. Differences between the two clones favored clone CIEN BTA-03, since it was better ranked for the color, odor and taste characteristics. Conclusion. Despite being resistant to Yellow Sigatoka, somaclone CIEN BTA-03 shows better sensory characteristics than its parental clone Williams.

Introduction. Beginning in 1994, vanilla vines grown under shade houses in Reunion Island have developed disorders mainly due to the cymbidium mosaic potexvirus (CymV) and potyviruses. To reduce damage and avoid viral epidemics, we considered developing a vanilla nursery to supply farmers with virus-free plant material and to provide prophylactic advice. Accordingly, we determined the relationship between symptoms on vanilla leaves and viral diagnosis. We also determined the temporal and spatial distribution patterns of viral diseases. Materials and methods. Symptom assessment and serological tests were carried out on vanilla leaves (Vanilla fragrans) at various times. The relationship between symptoms and viral infection data was analyzed with Statistica software. Spatial distribution patterns of infected plants were generated with two-dimensional distance class analysis (2DClass). Results and discussion. Results showed that symptoms do not correlate well with serological diagnosis. Plants in all shade houses in the survey were infected mainly by CymV which spreads in the row according to cultural practices. Potyviruses could be transmitted both by insect vectors and mechanically, but for the latter case less efficiently than CymV. Conclusion. Results from this study can be used to develop control measures, including the production of healthy planting materials to manage plant disease epidemics. Further studies will involve the characterization of vanilla potyviruses so that reliable serological techniques and better molecular tools can be developed.
