The effect on Coffea arabica cv. Ruiru 11 of training the trees on a single or two stem system at planting densities of between 1600 and 4800 trees ha−1 during the first production cycle after establishment was studied at three contrasting sites in Kenya. Training tree growth in the two stem system significantly depressed yields from the first two crops at all sites, irrespective of plant density, but yields caught up with the production levels of the single stem system faster in the wetter than in the drier zone. Yields of clean coffee increased with tree density up to 4000 trees ha−1 at all sites, irrespective of tree training method, but increased more slowly at populations of more than 4000 trees ha−1, especially in the drier zone. The proportion of large, grade A, coffee beans was not significantly influenced by the treatments studied.

Analyses of total N and P in coffee leaves from different geographic areas have been compared. The levels of these nutrients are correlated with each other and the quadratic regression equation for leaf N on leaf P has been derived. The value of N/P ratio in the coffee leaf for diagnosing nutritional status is assessed. No correlations were observed between Mg and either N or P. Irrigation of coffee in Kenya on latosolic soils raises leaf P but not N levels, in the absence of organic mulch and fertilizers. Effects of organic mulch, N and P fertilizers on leaf levels of N or P are discussed.

Using coffee trees sprayed with cuprous oxide and captafol it has been shown that both fungicides are redistributed within the tree canopy by rain. Under conditions of light rain fungicides are removed from upper parts of trees and redeposited at lower levels within the canopy in amounts capable of providing effective protection against coffee berry disease (CBD). With heavy rainfall, however, redeposition of fungicide at effective levels is less likely to occur. The results are discussed in relation to the success of overhead boom sprayers in controlling CBD and the observations that shoots in the upper parts of coffee trees are an important source of spores of the CBD strain of Colletotrichum coffeanum.

A three-year study on the development of oil, protein and dry matter in sesame seeds showed that oil percentage increased rapidly 11–17 days after fertilization, reaching a maximum in 20–23 days. There was no change in the iodine value of the oil after 18 days from fertilization. Accumulation of protein was more gradual, but there was no appreciable increase after the ‘seeds’ were 27 days old. Dry matter increased more slowly than either oil or protein and there was little increase after the ‘seeds’ were 34 days old. The implications of these findings on problems of harvesting the crop are discussed.

In a trial carried out in 1958, aldrin applied as a fog with a swingfog machine at concentrations of 10 and 20 per cent in gas oil was more effective than dieldrin or chlordane at similar concentrations for control of Atta cephalotes. Two applications of 10 and 20 per cent benzene hexachloride and toxaphene failed to give complete control. In a subsequent trial, aldrin in concentrations ranging from 2·5 to 8·0 per cent was also found to be effective against A. cephalotes but against A. laevigata, aldrin and dieldrin were more effective than chlordane at concentrations of 5·0 and 2·5 per cent. In campaigns carried out from 1959 to 1963, 5000 nests were destroyed by fogging with 2·5 per cent aldrin in gas oil.

Yield of swamp rice on acid sulphur soil was increased by liming and could be related to soil pH but was unaffected by drainage and differences in H2S in the soil. The seedling stage was most sensitive to acid and yield could be dramatically improved by planting mature vigorous seedlings. Survival of seedlings, tillering and panicle formation were the most important yield components affected by liming and acidity. Liming also increased spikelet number and grain size to a lesser degree. The optimal economic lime level for 3-week seedlings was around 4 t/ha but could be lower with 5-week seedlings.

Poor drainage of Vertisols in the Ethiopian mid-altitude highlands limits farming operations and cropping in the early rainy season (July–August). Traditional crops are grown on residual moisture late in the season (September–January) when waterlogging is less of a problem. Productivity is therefore below its potential. The recent introduction of a broadbed and furrow system for improved drainage on Vertisols allows full use of the growing period and provides scope for a wider variety of cropping systems and increased productivity. Trials using a sequential cropping system demonstrated that two crops a year can be grown when Vertisols are drained. The crops used in the trial were oats or an oat/vetch mixture forage in the early season followed by grasspea or chickpea food crops in the late season as the second crop. Further on-farm research on sequential cropping of forages and food crops in the mid-altitude highlands of Ethiopia is now needed.

Future research in agronomy will doubtless lay stress on the efficient use of inputs by applying them during the most appropriate development phases of the plant, and by modifying those phases, which in some cases can now be well defined. The plant can often be influenced or stimulated well before the effect commences, storing the stimulus for the future, and the terms ‘Receptive Phase’ and ‘Responsive Phase’ are proposed to describe these stages. To apply research most effectively, receptive phases should be delimited and linked with responsive phases in a way convenient for the agronomist. Schematic diagrams can be prepared relating growth phases to field appearance, as is illustrated by examples based on cotton, rice, maize and apple.

To study control of Hemileia vastatrix leaf disease in Coffea arabica L., an experiment was run for a year in Coorg District of Mysore State. Three and four early-season sprays coupled with two mid-season ones gave a reasonable control, as evaluated by leaf spot counts, but a high proportion of rust-affected leaves were retained on the bushes. Infection commenced in the hot weather, immediately after showers, and the number of infected leaves appears to have been more important than the average leaf spot counts. Control of leaf disease up to December, and a late incidence of the rust during January, may not affect crop prospects appreciably. It is suggested that reduced early sprays coupled with pre-monsoon and timely mid-season schedules should reasonably control the incidence of rust.

A procedure was used to calibrate the DSSATv3 CERES–Maize (Zea mays) model and to evaluate its performance in simulating growth and development of maize using input data collected from campesino farmers instead of using data obtained from on-station experiments or from the literature. The problems encountered in the calibration process are illustrated, particularly the failure of the model to simulate the growth and development of local highland maize cultivars (HMC). It is argued that the low ambient temperatures to which HMCs are exposed in the Toluca Valley are responsible for this failure, because HMCs respond differently to temperature and have a different optimum temperature range from temperate and tropical maize cultivars. It was concluded that the model needs to be adjusted to allow for consideration of the effects of constant low temperatures on the prediction of plant phenology and production, and partition of biomass in HMCs, since grain yield is not the main criterion used by smallholders when selecting maize cultivars.

After a review of previous work, experiments on cocoa seed storage at the West African Cocoa Research Institute are described. Although no definite recommendations are made as to the optimum methods of storing cocoa seed, the effects of temperature, fungicides, pre-storage in the pod after harvest, air-drying, and some minor factors are described and discussed.

An experiment is described on the establishment of the grass Andropogon gayanus in the presence of different companion crops. Maize and soyabean proved the most suitable companion crops; mucuna and the annual grass Pennisetum pedicellatum were too competitive. The companion crops significantly reduced weed invasion. The establishment of A. gayanus was improved by early harvesting of companion crops. Dry matter yields were highest where grass had been sown in rows. Inclusion of a companion crop is a promising method of increasing herbage production without harming the establishment of the under-sown seeds.

Late planting of a 136-day variety of maize led to reduced yields only when planting was later than about four weeks after the start of the main rains. The reductions were caused by drought at the end of the season and by high rainfall in the first 35 days after planting. Drought beginning 80–100 days after planting (DAP) reduced weight per seed but drought beginning earlier than 80 DAP reduced seed number per cob and increased the number of barren plants. Late showers alleviated the reduction in weight per seed but not the other symptoms of drought. High rainfall after planting was associated with reduced plant size at flowering and reduced seed number per cob at harvest.

Soil alkalinity imposes important limitations to lupin productivity; however, little attention has been paid to investigate the effects of soil alkalinity on plant growth and development. Many lupins are sensitive to alkaline soils, but Lupinus albus material from Egypt was found to have tolerance to limed soils. The aim of this study was to compare the growth response of two cultivars of L.albus L. – an Egyptian cultivar, P27734, and an Australian cultivar, Kiev Mutant, to different soil pH levels and to understand the physiological mechanisms underlying agronomic alkalinity tolerance of P27734. Plants were grown under three pH levels (5.1, 6.7, and 7.8) in a temperature-controlled glasshouse. For both cultivars, the greatest dry mass production and carboxylate exudation from roots were observed at alkaline pH. The better performance of the Egyptian cultivar at high pH was entirely accounted for by its greater seed weight. From a physiological perspective, the Australian cultivar was as alkaline-tolerant as the Egyptian cultivar. These findings highlight the agronomic importance of seed weight for sowing, and both cultivars can be used in alkaline soils.

Once in a while, every plant breeding project has to face a difficult situation: for example, objectives not reached, insufficient production of new genetic material, poor variety adoption and context change. In most cases, the problems are biological in nature, but they may also arise from poor situation analysis leading to inappropriate selection criteria or failing seed systems. We believe that plant breeders need special tools for analysing the human situations in which they are immersed. Such tools would assist them in identifying strategies which are favourable for one, several or all of the actors in a situation. Comprehensive sociology proposes a method derived from actionist analysis. This method relies on a situation description organized in a Panoramic or Pan Table (PT) and on empathetic induction by the breeder of the actors' positions. The PT facilitates the identification of the zones of potential conflict. This paper is methodological. We show how to use the PT method in a real situation for tactical or strategic purposes. In our example, the breeder has to elaborate a specification for a cotton breeding project in the case of a commodity chain that is co-ordinated by a national cotton company. After describing the PT method and its use, we discuss its limitations and the way human problems can be taken into account when elaborating strategies for action.

The problems arising in field trials in plant pathology and entomology are considered under five headings: (1) experimental design, (2) conduct of experiments, (3) records, (4) analysis and (5) interpretation. Solutions to the problems are not always given, but it is useful to recognize their existence. Examples are given from a wide range of crops

Estimates of variety × environment interactions for grain yield were obtained from a study involving 16 sorghum varieties grown at the same three locations over a 3-year period. Whereas the variety × year interaction was small and not significant, the variety × location and the variety × location × year interactions were highly significant. Evidence was presented suggesting that the years of testing could be reduced by increasing the number of test locations. T.F.M.7 and Karkatib 4/1/1 were identified as desirable varieties, combining high yield and stability of performance, thereby deserving a place both in commercial production and future breeding programmes.

Results of a two-year field study show that even under hot northern Indian conditions, sugar-beet planting dates can be advanced to 20 September to permit an early harvest from mid-March onwards. Seeding the crop on the northern side of east-west ridges gave root yields of 45–50 t ha−1 with a sucrose content of 12–14%. Transplanting gave the highest tonnage but led to a high incidence of branched tap roots. For timely planting during October, direct seeding in north–south rows was also satisfactory. Such staggered seeding and harvest schedules could help extend the milling period to 90–100 days as against the present 45–50 days.

Effects of daylength and night temperature on the onset of flowering of selected cowpea cultivars have been investigated, using automatically controlled glasshouses at Reading. The results show close agreement with those from field trials in Nigeria, wherein low intensity incandescent lighting was used to extend the natural daylength. As the field technique has proved an effective screen for daylength insensitivity, future screening work in glasshouses can be for effects of night temperature on time to first flower and for day temperature on the rate of leaf senescence and components of seed yield. This integrated approach can accelerate the screening of cowpea cultivars for sensitivity to environmental factors over ranges characteristic of the low altitude, humid tropics.
