Singular Systems Analysis (SSA), or time domain Principal Component Analysis (PCA), is most appropriately analysed in terms of local, moving-window spectral analysis. The behaviour of Empirical Orthogonal Functions (EOF) of this theory are examined, for continuously sampled data, in the limits of large and small window length, and for centre or end projection. Filters obtained by projecting on to these EOFs are shown to approximate local, linear band pass filters, where the EOFs depend upon the correlation structure (or the power spectral density) of the signal and the window length. Power in the spectra is not generally conserved, and projection to the endpoints of a window may not converge to the underlying signal in the absence of noise. The filters are independent of the phase of the Fourier transform, and are therefore unable to distinguish dynamically between a signal and a surrogate (phase-randomized) transform of it. Iteration of such local filters using a prediction error-based stopping criterion can and does lead to improved results, but the choice of window length must be made a priori. Hence, we introduce an iterative local filter with the window length being determined as part of the filtering procedure. This involves the determination of the predictability of the projected time series, and hence allows SSA to be used in a genuinely nonlinear way.

Using the theory of conformal mappings, we show that two-dimensional quasi-static moving boundary problems can be described by a non-linear Löwner-Kufarev equation and a functional relation ℱ between the shape of the boundary and the velocity at the boundary. Together with the initial data, this leads to an initial value problem. Assuming that ℱ satisfies certain conditions, we prove a theorem stating that this initial value problem has a local solution in time. The proof is based on some straightforward estimates on solutions of Löwner-Kufarev equations and an iteration technique.

The discrete non-linear Schrödinger equation is one of the most important inherently discrete models, having a crucial role in the modelling of a great variety of phenomena, ranging from solid-state and condensed-matter physics to biology. In this paper, a class of discrete non-linear Schrödinger equations are considered. Using critical point theory in combination with periodic approximations, we establish some new sufficient conditions on the existence results for solitons of the equation. The classical Ambrosetti–Rabinowitz superlinear condition is improved.

We propose and analyse an age-structured model for within-host HIV virus dynamics which is incorporated with both virus-to-cell and cell-to-cell infection routes, and proliferations of both uninfected and infected cells in the form of logistic growth. The model turns out to be a hybrid system with two differential-integral equations and one first-order partial differential equation. We perform some rigorous analyses for the considered model. Among the interesting dynamical behaviours of the model is the occurrence of backward bifurcation in terms of the basic reproduction number R0 at R0 = 1, which raises new challenges for effective infection control. We also discuss the cause of such a backward bifurcation, based on our analytical results.

We consider the following system of equations: where the spatial average ⟨ B ⟩ = 0 and μ > σ > 0. This system plays an important role as a Ginzburg-Landau equation with a mean field in several areas of the applied sciences and the steady-states of this system extend to periodic steady-states with period L on the real line which are observed in experiments. Our approach is by combining methods of nonlinear functional analysis such as nonlocal eigenvalue problems and the variational characterization of eigenvalues with Jacobi elliptic integrals. This enables us to give a complete classification of all stable steady-states for any positive L.

An ℝ-linear conjugation problem modelling the process of power fields forming in a heterogeneous infinite planar structure with an elliptical inclusion is considered. Exact analytical solutions are derived in the class of piece-wise meromorphic functions with their principal parts fixed. Cases with internal singularities and with singularities of the given principal parts at the interface are investigated.

This paper determines the asymptotic solution of certain initial-boundary value problems for singularly-perturbed reaction-diffusion equations, including the Allen–Cahn and Cahn–Hilliard equations, on bounded one-dimensional spatial domains for r[ges ]0. Attention is focused on the metastable evolution of a transition layer over an asymptotically exponentially-long time interval.

We are concerned with the problem of determining the diffusivity D of a diffusion process governed by the equation ut = (Dux)x', under the assumption that D depends on u. The main point consists in the observation that there exist solutions of travelling-wave type and that the dependence D = D(u) can be explicitly found in terms of the profile of such solutions. The property of finite propagation speed is required for this method to work. We propose two concrete implementations of the inverse problem, and give a rigorous mathematical proof of our statements. We also describe the application of the travelling-wave method to another interesting class of nonlinear parabolic equations.

In this paper, we perform a sensitivity analysis for shape optimization problems arising in models we suggest for a lithotripter. More precisely, we use two models based on high intensity ultrasound focusing by an acoustic lens, where through changing the shape of the lens we try to achieve a favourable focusing. The models are based on acoustic wave equations with piecewise constant coefficients, a linear and a nonlinear one, where for the nonlinear one we use the Westervelt equation. The sensitivity analysis is performed using an adjoint approach.

The distortion of a two-dimensional bubble (or drop) in a corner flow of an inviscid incompressible fluid is considered. Numerical solutions are obtained by series truncation. The results confirm and extend previous calculations.

In this paper we study the question of existence and uniqueness of solutions to the equation

which occurs in the modelling of hard contact lenses. Using ‘shooting’ arguments, we show that, depending on the parameters in the problem, there are cases where there is precisely one solution, others where there is more than one, and others where there are none.

We describe a functional framework suitable to the analysis of the Cahn–Hilliard equation on an evolving surface whose evolution is assumed to be given a priori. The model is derived from balance laws for an order parameter with an associated Cahn–Hilliard energy functional and we establish well-posedness for general regular potentials, satisfying some prescribed growth conditions, and for two singular non-linearities – the thermodynamically relevant logarithmic potential and a double-obstacle potential. We identify, for the singular potentials, necessary conditions on the initial data and the evolution of the surfaces for global-in-time existence of solutions, which arise from the fact that integrals of solutions are preserved over time, and prove well-posedness for initial data on a suitable set of admissible initial conditions. We then briefly describe an alternative derivation leading to a model that instead preserves a weighted integral of the solution and explain how our arguments can be adapted in order to obtain global-in-time existence without restrictions on the initial conditions. Some illustrative examples and further research directions are given in the final sections.

Previous study of contact of power-law graded materials concerned the contact of a rigid body (punch) with an elastic inhomogeneous foundation whose inhomogeneity is characterised by the Young modulus varying with depth as a power function. This paper models Hertzian and adhesive contact of two elastic inhomogeneous power-law graded bodies with different exponents. The problem is governed by an integral equation with two different power kernels. A nonstandard method of Gegenbauer orthogonal polynomials for its solution is proposed. It leads to an infinite system of linear algebraic equations of a special structure. The integral representations of the system coefficients are evaluated, and the properties of the system are studied. It is shown that if the exponents coincide, the infinite system admits a simple exact solution that corresponds to the case when the Young moduli are different but the exponents are the same. Formulas for the length of the contact zone, the pressure distribution and the surface normal displacements of the contacting bodies are obtained in the form convenient for computations. Effects of the mismatch in the Young moduli exponents are studied. A comparative analysis of the Hertzian and adhesive contact models clarifies the effects of the surface energy density on the contact pressure, the contact zone size and the profile of the contacting bodies outside the contact area.

In this work, we carry out an analytical and numerical investigation of travelling waves representing arced vegetation patterns on sloped terrains. These patterns are reported to appear also in ecosystems which are not water deprived; therefore, we study the hypothesis that their appearance is due to plant–soil negative feedback, namely due to biomass-(auto)toxicity interactions.

To this aim, we introduce a reaction-diffusion-advection model describing the dynamics of vegetation biomass and toxicity which includes the effect of sloped terrains on the spatial distribution of these variables. Our analytical investigation shows the absence of Turing patterns, whereas travelling waves (moving uphill in the slope direction) emerge. Investigating the corresponding dispersion relation, we provide an analytic expression for the asymptotic speed of the wave. Numerical simulations not only just confirm this analytical quantity but also reveal the impact of toxicity on the structure of the emerging travelling pattern.

Our analysis represents a further step in understanding the mechanisms behind relevant plants‘ spatial distributions observed in real life. In particular, since vegetation patterns (both stationary and transient) are known to play a crucial role in determining the underlying ecosystems’ resilience, the framework presented here allows us to better understand the emergence of such structures to a larger variety of ecological scenarios and hence improve the relative strategies to ensure the ecosystems’ resilience.

Motivated by applications in data science, we study partial differential equations on graphs. By a classical fixed-point argument, we show existence and uniqueness of solutions to a class of nonlocal continuity equations on graphs. We consider general interpolation functions, which give rise to a variety of different dynamics, for example, the nonlocal interaction dynamics coming from a solution-dependent velocity field. Our analysis reveals structural differences with the more standard Euclidean space, as some analogous properties rely on the interpolation chosen.

This paper is concerned with a fully non-linear variant of the Allen–Cahn equation with strong irreversibility, where each solution is constrained to be non-decreasing in time. The main purposes of this paper are to prove the well-posedness, smoothing effect and comparison principle, to provide an equivalent reformulation of the equation as a parabolic obstacle problem and to reveal long-time behaviours of solutions. More precisely, by deriving partial energy-dissipation estimates, a global attractor is constructed in a metric setting, and it is also proved that each solution u(x,t) converges to a solution of an elliptic obstacle problem as t → +∞.

We develop a mathematical model in hydrodynamic lubrication that takes into account three phenomena: cavitation, surface roughness and compressibility of the fluid. Like the classical Reynolds equation, the model is mass preserving. We compute the homogenized coefficients in the case of unidirectional roughness. A one-dimensional problem is also solved explicitly.

Oscillatory flow over a circular cylinder, or part-cylinder, placed on a plane boundary, when the Strouhal and streaming Reynolds numbers are large, is considered. The solution is developed in matching inner and outer boundary layers. A steady streaming motion in the outer layer can lead to a net flow away from the cylinder along the plane boundary. A simple experiment substantiates this prediction, and the implications for bed-scouring are examined.

This paper concerns the reflection of high-frequency, monochromatic linear waves of wavenumber k(≫ 1) from smooth boundaries which are O(k−1/2) perturbations away from either a specified near-planar boundary or else from a given smooth, two-dimensional curve of general O(1) curvature. For each class of perturbed boundary, we will consider separately plane and cylindrical wave incidence, with general amplitude profiles of each type of incident field. This interfacial perturbation scaling is canonical in the sense that a ray approach requires a modification to the standard WKBJ ‘ray ansatz’ which, in turn, leads to a leading-order amplitude (or ‘transport’) equation which includes an extra term absent in a standard application of the geometrical theory of diffraction. This extra term is unique to this scaling, and the afore-mentioned modification that is required is an application of a generalised type of ray expansion first posed by F. G. Friedlander and J. B. Keller (1955 Commun. Pure Appl. Math.6, 387–394).

In this paper, we study a class of linear functional differential equations of which the pantograph equation is a prominent member. Specifically, we study the existence of solutions holomorphic at a fixed point of the functional argument. The local theory for equations with attracting fixed points is known [17, 13], but little is known about the case where the fixed point is repelling. We formulate an eigenvalue problem for the repelling fixed point case and show that the corresponding spectrum is discrete. Hence, that holomorphic solutions occur only as special cases. The second order pantograph equation is used to illustrate this result. A key step in this process is to reformulate the problem in terms of a compact operator. Aside from exploiting well known results for the spectra of such operators, we use results such as the Fredholm Alternative to derive existence results for the non-homogeneous problem.
