Classical facet elements do not provide an optimal rate of convergence of the numerical solution toward the solution of the exact problem in H(div-norm for general unstructured meshes containing hexahedra and prisms. We propose two new families of high-order elements for hexahedra, triangular prisms and pyramids that recover the optimal convergence. These elements have compatible restrictions with each other, such that they can be used directly on general hybrid meshes. Moreover the H(div) proposed spaces are completing the De Rham diagram with optimal elements previously constructed for H1 and H(curl) approximation. The obtained pyramidal elements are compared theoretically and numerically with other elements of the literature. Eventually, numerical results demonstrate the efficiency of the finite elements constructed.

Finite-difference Lattice Boltzmann (LB) models are proposed for simulating gas flows in devices with microscale geometries. The models employ the roots of half-range Gauss-Hermite polynomials as discrete velocities. Unlike the standard LB velocity-space discretizations based on the roots of full-range Hermite polynomials, using the nodes of a quadrature defined in the half-space permits a consistent treatment of kinetic boundary conditions. The possibilities of the proposed LB models are illustrated by studying the one-dimensional Couette flow and the two-dimensional square driven cavity flow. Numerical and analytical results show an improved accuracy in finite Knudsen flows as compared with standard LB models.

In the late stage of the mitotic cycle of eukaryotic cells, cytokinesis ensues during which a parent cell replicates its nucleus with the necessary genetical substances (i.e., DNAs and chromosomes) and splits into two similar offspring cells. This mitotic process involves complex chemical, biophysical andmechanical processes whose details are just beginning to be unfolded experimentally. In this paper, we propose a full 3-D hydrodynamical model using a phase field approach to study the cellular morphological change during cytokinesis. In this model, the force along the contracting ring induced by remodeling of actin-myosin filament on cell cortex layer at the division plane of the parent cell during cytokinesis, is approximated using a proxy force anchored on the newly formed nuclei. The symmetric or asymmetric cell division is simulated numerically with the model. Our numerical results show that the location of the division plane and the contracting force along the cytokinetic ring on the division plane are essential for the cell division. In addition, our numerical study also shows that, during cytokinesis, surface tension of the cell membrane also contributes to this process by retaining the morphological integrity of the offspring cells. This model and the accompanying numerical simulation tool provide a solid framework to build upon with more sophisticated whole cell models to probe the cell mitotic process.

In this paper, we investigate the effects of kinematic transports on the nematic liquid crystal system numerically and theoretically. The model we used is a “1+2” elastic continuum model simplified from the Ericksen-Leslie system. The numerical experiments are carried out by using a Legendre-Galerkin spectral method which can preserve the energy law in the discrete form. Based on this highly accurate numerical approach we find some interesting and important relationships between the kinematic transports and the characteristics of the flow. We make some analysis to explain these results. Several significant scaling properties are also verified by our simulations.

In this paper, a novel implementation of immersed interface method combined with Stokes solver on a MAC staggered grid for solving the steady two-fluid Stokes equations with interfaces. The velocity components along the interface are introduced as two augmented variables and the resulting augmented equation is then solved by the GMRES method. The augmented variables and /or the forces are related to the jumps in pressure and the jumps in the derivatives of both pressure and velocity, and are interpolated using cubic splines and are then applied to the fluid through the jump conditions. The Stokes equations are discretized on a staggered Cartesian grid via a second order finite difference method and solved by the conjugate gradient Uzawa-type method. The numerical results show that the overall scheme is second order accurate. The major advantages of the present IIM-Stokes solver are the efficiency and flexibility in terms of types of fluid flow and different boundary conditions. The proposed method avoids solution of the pressure Poisson equation, and comparisons are made to show the advantages of time savings by the present method. The generalized two-phase Stokes solver with correction terms has also been applied to incompressible two-phase Navier-Stokes flow.

In this paper, we present an efficient rescaling scheme for computing the long-time dynamics of expanding interfaces. The idea is to design an adaptive time-space mapping such that in the new time scale, the interfaces evolves logarithmically fast at early growth stage and exponentially fast at later times. The new spatial scale guarantees the conservation of the area/volume enclosed by the interface. Compared with the original rescaling method in [J. Comput. Phys. 225(1) (2007) 554–567], this adaptive scheme dramatically improves the slow evolution at early times when the size of the interface is small. Our results show that the original three-week computation in [J. Comput. Phys. 225(1) (2007) 554–567] can be reproduced in about one day using the adaptive scheme. We then present the largest and most complicated Hele-Shaw simulation up to date.

The parallel implementation of MUPHY, a concurrent multiscale code for large-scale hemodynamic simulations in anatomically realistic geometries, for multi-GPU platforms is presented. Performance tests show excellent results, with a nearly linear parallel speed-up on up to 32GPUs and a more than tenfold GPU/CPU acceleration, all across the range of GPUs. The basic MUPHY scheme combines a hydrokinetic (Lattice Boltzmann) representation of the blood plasma, with a Particle Dynamics treatment of suspended biological bodies, such as red blood cells. To the best of our knowledge, this represents the first effort in the direction of laying down general design principles for multiscale/physics parallel Particle Dynamics applications in non-ideal geometries. This configures the present multi-GPU version of MUPHY as one of the first examples of a high-performance parallel code for multiscale/physics biofluidic applications in realistically complex geometries.

Flexible discretization techniques for the approximative solution of coupled wave propagation problems are investigated. In particular, the advantages of using non-matching grids are presented, when one subregion has to be resolved by a substantially finer grid than the other subregion. We present the non-matching grid technique for the case of a mechanical-acoustic coupled as well as for acoustic-acoustic coupled systems. For the first case, the problem formulation remains essentially the same as for the matching situation, while for the acoustic-acoustic coupling, the formulation is enhanced with Lagrange multipliers within the framework of Mortar Finite Element Methods. The applications will clearly demonstrate the superiority of the Mortar Finite Element Method over the standard Finite Element Method both concerning the flexibility for the mesh generation as well as the computational time.

We consider the relativistic Euler equations governing spherically symmetric, perfect fluid flows on the outer domain of communication of Schwarzschild space-time, and we introduce a version of the finite volume method which is formulated from the geometric formulation (and thus takes the geometry into account at the discretization level) and is well-balanced, in the sense that it preserves steady solutions to the Euler equations on the curved geometry under consideration. In order to formulate our method, we first derive a closed formula describing all steady and spherically symmetric solutions to the Euler equations posed on Schwarzschild spacetime. Second, we describe a geometry-preserving, finite volume method which is based from the family of steady solutions to the Euler system. Our scheme is second-order accurate and, as required, preserves the family of steady solutions at the discrete level. Numerical experiments are presented which demonstrate the efficiency and robustness of the proposed method even for solutions containing shock waves and nonlinear interacting wave patterns. As an application, we investigate the late-time asymptotics of perturbed steady solutions and demonstrate its convergence for late time toward another steady solution, taking the overall effect of the perturbation into account.

The implementation of a turbulent gas-kinetic scheme into a finite-volume RANS solver is put forward, with two turbulent quantities, kinetic energy and dissipation, supplied by an allied turbulence model. This paper shows a number of numerical simulations of flow cases including an interaction between a shock wave and a turbulent boundary layer, where the shock-turbulent boundary layer is captured in a much more convincing way than it normally is by conventional schemes based on the Navier-Stokes equations. In the gas-kinetic scheme, the modeling of turbulence is part of the numerical scheme, which adjusts as a function of the ratio of resolved to unresolved scales of motion. In so doing, the turbulent stress tensor is not constrained into a linear relation with the strain rate. Instead it is modeled on the basis of the analogy between particles and eddies, without any assumptions on the type of turbulence or flow class. Conventional schemes lack multiscale mechanisms: the ratio of unresolved to resolved scales – very much like a degree of rarefaction – is not taken into account even if it may grow to non-negligible values in flow regions such as shocklayers. It is precisely in these flow regions, that the turbulent gas-kinetic scheme seems to provide more accurate predictions than conventional schemes.

Newtonian and non-Newtonian dispersed phase droplet formation in non-Newtonian continuous phase in T-junction and cross junction microchannels are investigated by the immiscible lattice BGK model. The effects of the non-Newtonian fluid power-law exponent, viscosity and interfacial tension on the generation of the droplet are studied. The final droplet size, droplet generation frequency, and detachment point of the droplet change with the power-law exponent. The results reveal that it is necessary to take into account the non-Newtonian rheology instead of simple Newtonian fluid assumption in numerical simulations. The present analysis also demonstrates that the lattice Boltzmann method is of potential to investigate the non-Newtonian droplet generation in multiphase flow.

We extend classic Sommerfeld and Silver-Müller radiation conditions for bounded scatterers to acoustic and electromagnetic fields propagating over three isotropic homogeneous layers in three dimensions. If X= (x1,x2,x3)ϵℝ3, with x3 denoting the direction orthogonal to the layers, standard conditions only hold for the outer layers in the region ∣x3∣ > ∣∣x∣γ, for γϵ(1/4,1/2) and x large. For ∣x3∣ < ∣∣x∣∣γ and inside the slab, asymptotic behavior depends on the presence of surface or guided modes given by the discrete spectrum of the associated operator.

The adaptation of Crouzeix-Raviart finite element in the context of multi-scale finite element method (MsFEM) is studied and implemented on diffusion and advection-diffusion problems in perforated media. It is known that the approximation of boundary condition on coarse element edges when computing the multiscale basis functions critically influences the eventual accuracy of any MsFEM approaches. The weakly enforced continuity of Crouzeix-Raviart function space across element edges leads to a natural boundary condition for the multiscale basis functions which relaxes the sensitivity of our method to complex patterns of perforations. Another ingredient to our method is the application of bubble functions which is shown to be instrumental in maintaining high accuracy amid dense perforations. Additionally, the application of penalization method makes it possible to avoid complex unstructured domain and allows extensive use of simpler Cartesian meshes.

This paper is devoted to the discussion of numerical methods for solving two-dimensional time-fractional advection-diffusion equations. Two different three-point combined compact alternating direction implicit (CC-ADI) schemes are proposed and then, the original schemes for solving the two-dimensional problems are divided into two separate one-dimensional cases. Local truncation errors are analyzed and the unconditional stabilities of the obtained schemes are investigated by Fourier analysis method. Numerical experiments show the effectiveness and the spatial higher-order accuracy of the proposed methods.

We construct an efficient numerical scheme for the quantum Fokker-Planck- Landau (FPL) equation that works uniformly from kinetic to fluid regimes. Such a scheme inevitably needs an implicit discretization of the nonlinear collision operator, which is difficult to invert. Inspired by work [9] we seek a linear operator to penalize the quantum FPL collision term QqFPL in order to remove the stiffness induced by the small Knudsen number. However, there is no suitable simple quantum operator serving the purpose and for this kind of operators one has to solve the complicated quantum Maxwellians (Bose-Einstein or Fermi-Dirac distribution). In this paper, we propose to penalize QqFPL by the "classical" linear Fokker-Planck operator. It is based on the observation that the classical Maxwellian, with the temperature replaced by the internal energy, has the same first five moments as the quantum Maxwellian. Numerical results for Bose and Fermi gases are presented to illustrate the efficiency of the scheme in both fluid and kinetic regimes.

The important task of evaluating the impact of random parameters on the output of stochastic ordinary differential equations (SODE) can be computationally very demanding, in particular for problems with a high-dimensional parameter space. In this work we consider this problem in some detail and demonstrate that by combining several techniques one can dramatically reduce the overall cost without impacting the predictive accuracy of the output of interests. We discuss how the combination of ANOVA expansions, different sparse grid techniques, and the total sensitivity index (TSI) as a pre-selective mechanism enables the modeling of problems with hundred of parameters. We demonstrate the accuracy and efficiency of this approach on a number of challenging test cases drawn from engineering and science.

We propose here a class of numerical schemes for the approximation of weak solutions to nonlinear hyperbolic systems in nonconservative form—the notion of solution being understood in the sense of Dal Maso, LeFloch, and Murat (DLM). The proposed numerical method falls within LeFloch-Mishra's framework of schemes with well-controlled dissipation (WCD), recently introduced for dealing with small-scale dependent shocks. We design WCD schemes which are consistent with a given nonconservative system at arbitrarily high-order and then analyze their linear stability. We then investigate several nonconservative hyperbolic models arising in complex fluid dynamics, and we numerically demonstrate the convergence of our schemes toward physically meaningful weak solutions.

Multiplicative noise removal is a challenging problem in image restoration. In this paper, by applying Box-Cox transformation, we convert the multiplicative noise removal problem into the additive noise removal problem and the block matching three dimensional (BM3D) method is applied to get the final recovered image. Indeed, BM3D is an effective method to remove additive Gaussian white noise in images. A maximum likelihood method is designed to determine the parameter in the Box-Cox transformation. We also present the unbiased inverse transform for the Box-Cox transformation which is important. Both theoretical analysis and experimental results illustrate clearly that the proposed method can remove multiplicative noise very well especially when multiplicative noise is heavy. The proposed method is superior to the existing methods for multiplicative noise removal in the literature.

The high order inverse Lax-Wendroff (ILW) procedure is extended to boundary treatment involving complex geometries on a Cartesian mesh. Our method ensures that the numerical resolution at the vicinity of the boundary and the inner domain keeps the fifth order accuracy for the system of the reactive Euler equations with the two-step reaction model. Shock wave propagation in a tube with an array of rectangular grooves is first numerically simulated by combining a fifth order weighted essentially non-oscillatory (WENO) scheme and the ILW boundary treatment. Compared with the experimental results, the ILW treatment accurately captures the evolution of shock wave during the interactions of the shock waves with the complex obstacles. Excellent agreement between our numerical results and the experimental ones further demonstrates the reliability and accuracy of the ILW treatment. Compared with the immersed boundary method (IBM), it is clear that the influence on pressure peaks in the reflected zone is obviously bigger than that in the diffracted zone. Furthermore, we also simulate the propagation process of detonation wave in a tube with three different widths of wall-mounted rectangular obstacles located on the lower wall. It is shown that the shock pressure along a horizontal line near the rectangular obstacles gradually decreases, and the detonation cellular size become large and irregular with the decrease of the obstacle width.

In this paper the numerical method for solution of an aeroelastic model describing the interactions of air flow with vocal folds is described. The flow is modelled by the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations spatially discretized with the aid of the stabilized finite element method. The motion of the computational domain is treated with the aid of the Arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian method. The structure dynamics is replaced by a mechanically equivalent system with the two degrees of freedom governed by a system of ordinary differential equations and discretized in time with the aid of an implicit multistep method and strongly coupled with the flow model. The influence of inlet/outlet boundary conditions is studied and the numerical analysis is performed and compared to the related results from literature.
