  • Data from the Survey on Ageing and Independence are employed to test the relationship between stress, integration in close family and friend networks, and well-being with a particular emphasis on parent status. The dependent variables used in this analysis are, whether individuals have a close family member or a close friend, the number of reported close relatives and friends, life stress, and the affect balance scale. It is hypothesized that the zero order relationship often found between parent status and well-being may be due to (1) a fundamental difference in the social support experiences of older parents and older childless individuals, (2) different levels of stress among these groups, or (3) the potential of friends to be of greater importance in assuring well-being in older age than family. Results show that childless persons are less likely than parents to have at least one close family member and they have fewer close relatives. No parent status differences are found regarding the likelihood of having a close friend or in the number of close friends individuals have. Compared to parents, childless individuals experience less life stress and similar levels of well-being. Finally, the nature of the stress-support-well-being relationship appears to be the same regardless of parent status.

  • This article reports on two studies that describe the adaptation of Spielberger's State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (form Y) for people aged 65 and older. The aim of the first study is to assess the necessity to modify the format of the STAI for the aged. Verbal reports of 22 subjects suggest difficulties reading the items, respecting the instructions and using the Likert scale. Item-remainder correlations supported these observations. Therefore, the size of the text was doubled and the state or trait instructions, as well as the choices of the Likert scale, were repeated in each item. A second study is carried out to test if these modifications enhanced the understanding of the items, and simplified the use of the STAI-Y. Verbal report and internal consistency showed a significant improvement. Our results support the recommendation of other authors that adapting an instrument for the elderly necessitates important modifications.

  • Psychological treatment of depression in the elderly has recently benefited from the development of the cognitive approach. In particular, cognitive psychotherapy seems well adapted to and accepted by older people. In this article, we attempt to show the course of this type of psychotherapy in the case of a 79 year-old depressive woman in our Cognitive Therapy Unit for Elderly. We emphasize the therapeutical setting and the content of the sessions, the techniques used, the changes that occurred, and finally, the therapeutic alliance is described. Although some negative views about psychotherapy with older people are not totally abandoned, this vignette is a good illustration of the benefits for the patient and the highly enriching work for the therapist.

  • International Comparisons of Long-Term Care: Australia

  • This account of nursing home care in Australia begins with a brief history of four phases of policy development from 1963 to the early 1990s. The structure of the nursing home system is then outlined; particular attention is given to data sets generated from administrative systems that are used for monitoring nursing home care. Arrangements for pre-admission assessment and assessment of resident dependency and care needs, to which reimbursement levels are related, are described next. A profile of resident characteristics and their patterns of utilization of nursing home care is presented, drawing on these assessment data. Policy issues arising in the 1990s are addressed in the conclusion; these concern the place of nursing home care in the overall balance of aged care services and the enhancement of outcomes of nursing home care in regard to quality of care and workforce training. Finally, the contribution of the continuing development of data sets for monitoring trends and outcomes to policy and program development is noted.
