Measurements are presented of the static pressure, total pressure, swirl and three-dimensional turbulence in the flow through an S-curved rectangular duct mounted in a wind tunnel at different incidences, yaw angles and mass flow ratios. The results show that at high incidence there is a large vortex around an area of flow separation after the first bend and a pair of contra-rotating vortices in the flow after the second bend. The distortion of total pressure at the exit of the S-duct is significantly high, and the corresponding three-dimensional turbulence is up to 16.7%. Appreciation of the existence of this type of flow is important in the field of air intake design for jet aircraft.

An experimental investigation has been performed to study the formation and development of spiral vortex flow over a swept-back wing. An aerofoil section with three alternative leading edge shapes was tested at sweep angles ranging from 0° to 56° for unit Reynolds numbers of 1 × 106/m and 2 × 106/m. The principal diagnostic tool was the surface oil-flow visualisation technique supplemented by pressure distribution measurements in certain cases. No spiral vortex flow was observed for sweep angles of 0° and 15° but at higher sweep angles the oil-flows indicated that there were three different mechanisms for the formation of spiral vortices. The angle of incidence at the onset of vortex flow, and the mechanism responsible for its formation, were found to depend upon the sweep angle, the leading edge shape and the Reynolds number. It was also noted that the larger the leading edge radius the greater the dependence upon Reynolds number. However, comparison with other work suggests that Reynolds number, incidence and sweep angle alone are insufficient to determine the type of spiral vortex flow occurring on a given wing.

Since the introduction of hexapod-type motion systems for flight simulation in the 1970s, Motion Drive Algorithm tuning has been primarily based on the subjective judgement of experienced pilots. This subjective method is often not transparent and often leads to ambiguous process of adjustment of the tuning parameters. Consequently, there are large variations in the motion cueing characteristics of flight training devices, a variability that subsequently raises questions regarding the value of motion cueing for pilot training itself. The third revision of ICAO 9625 Manual of Criteria for the Qualification of Flight Simulation Training Devices offered the opportunity to take a closer look at simulator motion cueing requirements in general. This led to the concept of the objective motion cueing test (OMCT), which was reported in 2006. After the method was evaluated on three research flight simulators, the results were published in 2007, demonstrating a larger spread in dynamic behaviour of cueing algorithms than expected. After discussions with the simulator industry regarding the form and methodology of the OMCT, an evaluation of the test in cooperation with the industry started in 2011. This led to the final form of the OMCT and cueing parameter criterion for the in-flight mode of transport aircraft. This paper describes the OMCT, the evaluation results and the criterion.

“Urban air vehicles” have been hailed as the next revolution in aviation. Prototypes of various sizes have been flown to demonstrate basic flight (hover and climb), but in most cases there is no demonstration of full flight capability, for example conversion from vertical to level flight (conversion corridor). There are proposals for vehicles in a wide range of scales: from drones specifically designed to deliver goods, to full size vehicles for manned transportation. Most of the concepts proposed include full electric propulsion, multiple (often convertible) rotors (ducted or un-ducted, counter-rotating), and widespread use of composite materials. Start-up companies are seeking funding with high-profile demonstrations in front of the media, but many unresolved technical problems are not been solved. Large aerospace companies have joined the fray. These initiatives are fuelling expectations that achieving the next milestone is within easy reach. This paper aims to fill some gaps in understanding and curb optimism. It takes a holistic view in order to establish a scientific basis for design, manufacturing, operations.

This paper is devoted to modelling and control algorithms for a slung load transportation system composed of one or multiple helicopters, where the load is coupled by the means of flexible ropes (see Fig. 1). The coupled helicopter system overcomes the payload limitation of a single small size helicopter, while keeping most of its advantages: small costs of operation, low maintenance costs and increased safeness. Therefore, the system can be utilised whenever the use of full size helicopters is impossible, too expensive or prohibited by law. We focus on the deployment and repairing of distributed sensor networks, using a transportation system based on multiple small size helicopters. A possible real world application is the deployment of fire fighting equipment, where space limitation of the fire trucks prohibits the application of bigger UAVs and using full size helicopters is too dangerous. The problem of load transportation using one or two full size helicopters (twin lift helicopter system), connected to the load by means of flexible ropes, has been discussed in the aerospace research community at least since 1960. We have shown in our previous work that there is a fundamental difference in the mathematical description between small and full size helicopters. Therefore, also the control design for the case of small size helicopters needs to be different. To our knowledge, the control of a slung load transportation system composed of multiple small size helicopters has not been studied until now. In this paper, the complete mechanical setup of the slung load transportation system based on one or more small size helicopters is presented. This includes a short description of the used UAVs, the additionally required sensors, and how the load is mounted. A model of one/multiple helicopters transporting a load is introduced. This model is used in a simplified form for the controller design and in full form for simulation. The controller for one and two helicopters, which is based on a state feedback controller, as well as the controller for three and more helicopters, which is based on a non linear controller, are explained in detail. Both controllers utilise an underlying non-linear orientation controller. We propose a feedback loop, based on forces measured in the ropes, to compensate for the influence of the rope. The controllers were tested in simulation and in real flight experiments. The world wide first flight experiment with three coupled helicopters was successfully conducted at the end of 2007.

Starting with atmospheric motions on a global scale, different categories of atmospheric turbulence are discussed. It is pointed out that the turbulence within the earth’s boundary layer is comparatively better understood than any other type of turbulence, due to a concerted effort by meteorologists and by aircraft engineers. Clear air turbulence, turbulence in clouds and storms are subjects of active research, but we are still at the beginning of the understanding of these phenomena.

The influence of atmospheric turbulence on some aspects of aircraft engineering is mentioned and the problem of the calculation or turbulence-induced loads is discussed in some detail. It is pointed out that the estimation of turbulence loads is a transposition of experience gained on one aircraft to another. The most simple technique of doing so is to assume that the atmospheric turbulence can be represented by a collection of single, isolated gusts and by making very simplifying assumptions about the dynamics of aircraft response. This technique, the discrete gust approach, in spite of serious theoretical reservations, has worked admirably well, but it appears that in many applications the limits of usefulness of the discrete gust approach have been reached. The alternative way of dealing with gusts is to treat them as a basically continuous phenomenon using the comparatively recently developed spectral technique. This technique not only permits the aircraft dynamics to be properly accounted for, but also describes the atmospheric turbulence in more realistic fashion, understandable not only to aircraft engineers but also to meteorologists and students of fluid dynamics.

A helicopter model has been identified and validated for flight conditions defined by altitudes, speeds, loadings and centre of gravity positions. To identify the helicopter models, 2-3-1-1 multistep control inputs were performed by the pilot to excite all helicopter modes. Then, each estimated signal has to remain in tolerance margins defined by the Federal Aviation Administration. Three methods were used to observe the system outputs from its states: a fuzzy logic method, a linear method optimised with a neural network algorithm and a classical method. Because of random effects when gathering data, classical method did not give good enough results. The fuzzy logic method was not robust enough so that output plots showed peaks that could be felt by the pilot. Then, because the model could be implemented in a simulator for the pilot training, the pilot feedback is very useful in order to compare the reality with the results of the mathematical model. When the outputs are obtained from the measured state variables, the linear method gave the best results.

This paper highlights unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) conceptual design using the multi-objective genetic algorithm (MOGA). The design problem is formulated as a multidisciplinary design optimisation (MDO) problem by coupling aerodynamic and structural analysis. The UAV considered in this paper is a low speed, long endurance aircraft. The optimisation problem uses endurance maximization and wing weight minimisation as dual objective functions. In this multi-objective optimisation, aspect ratio, wing loading, taper ratio, thickness-to-chord ratio, loiter velocity and loiter altitude are considered as design variables with stall speed, maximum speed and rate of climb as constraints. The MDO system integrates the aircraft design code, RDS and an empirical relation for objective function evaluation. In this study, the optimisation problem is solved in two approaches. In the first approach, the RDS code is directly integrated in the optimisation loop. In the second approach, Kriging model is employed. The second approach is fast and efficient as the meta-model reduces the time of computation. A relatively new multi-objective evolutionary algorithm named NSGA-II (non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm) is used to capture the full Pareto front for the dual objective problem. As a result of optimisation using multi-objective genetic algorithm, several non-dominated solutions indicating number of useful Pareto optimal designs is identified.

The aerodynamic design optimisation of a Micro Air Vehicle (MAV) wing is performed to obtain the optimal anti-symmetric wing twist distribution for the roll control of the MAV’s wing instead of using conventional ailerons. This twist distribution should produce minimum induced drag and achieve a better roll response. The implementation of several anti-symmetric load distributions such as the half lemniscates and the Horten distributions is studied leading to an initial solution for the optimal distribution that could achieve better roll requirements. Multhopp’s method based on Prandtl’s classical lifting line theory is used for the determination of the spanwise load distribution required during the optimisation process. The optimisation process is based on the modified feasible directions gradient based optimisation algorithm implemented in the optimisation system, VisualDOC, given by Dr. Garret Vanderplaats. The proposed optimisation process is applied to the ‘BARQ’developed MAV which has successful flight in July 2009.

Hot wire anemometers have found widespread use in the measurement of turbulence for many years. Recently, considerable improvements in the signal to noise ratio of these instruments has facilitated measurements in the high wavenumber region of the energy spectrum, where the turbulent energy level is usually relatively low.

Of major concern in the measurement of very small scale turbulent fluctuations by the hot wire method is the error introduced by the spatial averaging effect of the wire. Clearly, for fluctuations with wavelengths of the same order of magnitude as the wire length, or less, the line integration of the wire results in measured amplitudes which deviate considerably from those which would be recorded by a probe of infinitely small size.

Transonic shockwave/turbulent boundary layer interactions on a porous surface above a closed plenum chamber have been studied experimentally in the choked flow of a windtunnel test-section. The equivalent freestream Mach number is 0.76 and results were obtained for three shock strengths. Without the porous surface the Mach numbers ahead of the shock were 1.13, 1.18 and 1.26. The respective shock Mach numbers with the porous surface were 1.10, 1.11 and 1.19. Laser holographic interferometry results are used to measure the density flowfield and examine the nature of the interaction. These results show that the interaction on the porous surface is modified by a thin shear layer adjacent to the surface and the weakening of the Shockwave is attributed to this. The interaction was also studied by solving the two-dimensional Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations together with the two-layer algebraic eddy-viscosity model of Baldwin-Lomax modified with appropriate corrections for surface transpiration. The computed results show excellent agreement with the experimental data. The examination of these numerical results shows that the surface transpiration occurs at a low subsonic velocity and suggests that the effect of the transpiration through the porous surface on the interaction may be optimised.

A variety of related questions is posed. Are the right priorities for future aircraft design being set now? New civil aircraft types could be ‘silent’, i.e. make much less noise than current types. They could be ‘green’, i.e. safeguard the environment. Is silent as important as Green? The crucial answer is that future aircraft design should focus on substantial reductions on climate change impact. The air quality targets proposed by the ‘Sustainable Aviation’ initiative appear very ambitious: they should be pursued only to the extent that they do not affect improved fuel efficiency and reduced climate-changing emissions. Good progress has already been made on the aircraft noise targets proposed by the ‘Sustainable Aviation’ initiative, but again they should be pursued only to the extent that they do not affect improved fuel efficiency and reduced climate-changing emissions. The financial case for designing to reduce aircraft noise in order to deliver novel financial benefits, e.g. increase airport flights at night and/or relocate airports, is weak.

The assumption that a zero-incidence flow around bodies of revolution is axisymmetric has been broadly adopted by many researchers, even for cases where the flow around such bodies becomes unstable. In this study, the validity of this assumption is revisited using CFD simulation. As a case study, the simulations of both stable and unstable hypersonic flows around spiked blunt bodies in 2D axisymmetric and full 3D computational domains are compared. It is found that, for the stable flow cases, the main flow features are apparently axisymmetric and the assumption is generally acceptable. However, some degree of asymmetry can be observed inside the shear layer in the separated region, causing small variation in the drag coefficient. For the unstable flow cases, the asymmetry of the flow features is much more significant. More importantly, the assumption that the flow is axisymmetric is found to overestimate the level of flow unsteadiness. The amplitude of temporal drag variation as predicted by the axisymmetric solution is higher than that predicted by the full 3D solution.

The solution to the general problem of transferring a rocket between two terminals in space with minimum fuel expenditure is explained and the results obtained when application is made to a number of particular problems of space navigation are described. The mathematical techniques which may usefully be employed in the calculation of optimum rocket trajectories are exemplified by a method of solving the problem of obtaining maximum range from a rocket missile over the Earth's surface.

The method which was developed in an earlier paper for calculating the lift on a thin jet-flapped aerofoil has been applied to the case in which the jet enters the main stream tangentially from a deflected flap. The lift derivative with respect to the (small) angle of deflection β is of the form

where , E being the ratio of flap length to aerofoil chord, and D0 a function both of E and of the jet momentum coefficient CJ. In the special case CJ = 0, Do vanishes and the classical results for attached flow on flapped aerofoils without super-circulation are obtained. More generally, Do has been evaluated over the range 0<CJ<5 for six ratios E between 0·02 and 0·50, using an electronic computer. The lift derivatives so found lie between those in the limiting cases of “deflection” (E = 0) and “incidence” (E=1) which were calculated in Reference 1. They show that the effectiveness of the jet-flap scheme might be greatly increased by blowing over flaps of the order of 20 or 30 per cent of the chord, rather than over the small “shrouds” which have hitherto been proposed.

An attempt has been made to determine the natural frequency of fundamental flexural mode of a cantilever beam with uniform taper by the Galerkin method. The method suggested considerably reduces the calculations as compared with the other methods available and the results are checked with the correction factors derived by Martin.

A method of interpolating low aspect ratio lifting surface mode deflections for use in aeroelastic calculations is described. It is based on the spline curve, the numerical analogue of the draughtsman’s spline which is a thin flexible beam used for drawing a smooth curve through a set of given coordinate points. The present problem is one of surface fitting and a matrix scheme using two-way spline curves is adopted. The method of treating the case in which the data points are randomly placed, whilst retaining an exact fit at the points, is discussed, as are the results of a practical example.

A deliberate product strategy is usually aimed at creating a transport aircraft family on the basis of a common wing by stretching the fuselage. Due to this policy of high fleet commonality the costs for development, manufacture and maintenance can be reduced. On the other hand the wing designer has to choose an appropriate wing area for the maximum stretched version and try to find the best trade-off between design and off-design conditions.

A transonic wing however shows optimum performance at high loadings which are not achieved at entry into service with such a conventional fixed geometry wing. Variable Camber (VC) is offering an opportunity to achieve considerable improvements in operational flexibility, buffet boundaries and performance which allow a reduction in optimum wing size.

Significant drag reductions and increases of the buffet boundary were found from research work. This work led to the current concept where the trailing edge flaps and ailerons are used to modify the wing camber in cruise according to the lift demand.

An efficient VC system requires a change in design philosophy and several new constraints in the design problem were found to effect the extent of the supersonic region, the acceptable pressure gradients in the recompression zone and the required surface curvature. Theoretical and wind tunnel results are given as well as a discussion of the effects on the system design, loads, weight, handling qualities, propulsion integration and mission performance.

Variable camber will contribute an average reduction of 3 to 6% in fuel burn and enable the use of one wing for medium range and long range missions respectively. The introduction of VC will launch a new generation of intelligent airliners which will optimise their camber schedule throughout the entire mission. A further improvement potential due to leading edge camber devices and spanwise differential camber is emphasised.

In an effort to reduce the negative impact of civil aviation on the human environment, trajectory optimisation techniques have been used to minimise the single event impact of noise and gaseous emissions of departures on communities in the vicinity of airports. For this purpose, the earlier developed trajectory optimisation tool NOISHHH has been adapted to design departure trajectories optimised for environmental criteria, based on area navigation. The new version of NOISHHH combines a noise model, an emissions inventory model, a geographic information system and a dynamic trajectory optimisation algorithm to generate flight paths with minimised environmental impact. Operational constraints have been introduced to ensure that the resulting flight paths are fully compliant with the guidelines and regulations that apply to the design of standard instrument departures and the use of area navigation. To illustrate the capabilities of the new version of NOISHHH, two numerical examples are presented, which are both redesigns of standard instrument departures currently in use at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol.

The influence of trailing-edge devices such as Gurney flaps and divergent trailing edges of different height on the aerodynamic performance of an aerofoil at transonic speeds has been investigated experimentally. The investigation has been carried out in the Transonic Wind Tunnel Göttingen (TWG) using the two-dimensional aerofoil model VC-Opt at freestream Mach numbers of M ε [0.755, 0.775, 0.790] and a Reynolds number of Re = 5.0 x 106.

The results have shown that the trailing-edge devices increase the circulation of the aerofoil leading to a lift enhancement and pitching-moment decrease as well as an increase in minimum drag compared to the baseline configuration. The maximum lift-to-drag ratio is considerably improved and the onset of trailing-edge flow separation is shifted to higher lift. Besides the increased rear-loading, a downstream displacement of the shock provides the main lift enhancement in transonic flow.

The simple Gurney flap provides the largest additional circulation of all geometries tested. The smoother turning of the flow due to the additional ramp of the divergent trailing edge leads to a smaller increase of circulation. Slightly less lift but considerably less viscous (pressure) drag is generated enhancing the maximum lift-to-drag ratio compared to the Gurney flap. The negative affect of the Gurney flap on the pitching moment is also reduced.

For the high divergent trailing edges, different ramp slopes have a significant influence on the aerodynamic performance whereas at low device heights the influence is considerably diminished.

The results show that the divergent trailing edge proves to be the better trailing-edge device at transonic speeds. The application as an element for an adaptive wing is generally possible.
