A novel, non-intrusive, high spatial and temporal resolution thermal imaging system, based on the fluorescence properties of a dysprosium doped yttrium-aluminum-garnet (Dy3+:YAG) thermographic phosphor, has been developed. In this system, the phosphor coating on the test surface is excited by a pulsed Nd:YAG laser. The resulting fluorescent emission of the temperature sensitive 456nm transition and that of the temperature independent 496nm transition, are acquired using a pair of image-intensified charged coupled device cameras. The ratio of the acquired emissions is then correlated to temperature. The Dy:YAG phosphor displays temperature sensitivity in the range of 295–l,350K (with possibility up to 1,800K). Temperature measurements obtained from the surface of a disk heated by an impinging jet, demonstrate the feasibility of this technique for general heat transfer studies involving significant unsteadiness and transient phenomena.

As propeller-driven aircraft are the best choice for short/middle-haul flights but their acoustic emissions may require improvements to comply with future noise certification standards, this work aims to numerically evaluate the acoustics of different modern propeller designs. Overall sound pressure level and noise spectra of various blade geometries and hub configurations are compared on a surface representing the exterior fuselage of a typical large turboprop aircraft. Interior cabin noise is also evaluated using the transfer function of a Fokker 50 aircraft. A blade design operating at lower RPM and with the span-wise loading moved inboard is shown to be significantly quieter without severe performance penalties. The employed Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) method is able to reproduce the tonal content of all blades and its dependence on hub and blade design features.

Research is at present being carried out at the Turin Polytechnic University with the aim of designing an HAVE/UAV (high altitude very-long endurance/unmanned air vehicle). The vehicle should climb to 17-20km by mainly taking advantage of direct Sun radiation and thereafter maintain a level flight; during the night, a fuel cells energy storage system would be used. A computer program has been developed to carry out a parametric study for the platform design. The solar radiation change over one year, the altitude, masses and efficiencies of the solar and fuel cells, and the aerodynamic performances have all been taken into account. The parametric studies have shown how fuel cells and solar cells efficiency and mass have the most influence on the platform dimensions. A wide use of high modulus CFRP has been made in designing the structure in order to minimise the airframe weight. A first configuration of HELIPLAT® (HELIos PLATform) was worked out, following a preliminary parametric study. The platform is a monoplane with eight brushless electric motors, a twin-boom tail type with an oversized horizontal stabiliser and two rudders. The co-ordinates at the root and along the wing span as well as the wing planform were optimised to achieve the best efficiency. Several profiles and wing plans have been analysed using the CFD software Xfoil and Vsaero. Several wind-tunnel tests were carried out to compare the analytically predicted performances. A preliminary design of a scale-sized technological demonstrator was completed with the aim of manufacturing a proof-of-concept structure. A FEM analysis was carried by using the Msc/Patran/Nastran code to predict the static and dynamic behaviour of the UAV structure.

In recent papers Messiter and Hida have proposed a first-order correction to simple Newtonian theory for the pressure distributions on the lower surfaces of lifting conical bodies with detached shocks. The method involves the solution of an integral equation which Messiter solved numerically for thin delta wings, while Hida gave an approximate solution for thick wings with diamond and bi-convex cross-sections. It is shown in the present paper that Hida’s approximate solutions give poor agreement with experiment, and a series of more precise numerical solutions of the equation are given for wings with diamond cross-sections. The pressures, and shock shapes, obtained from these solutions are in very good agreement with experiment at Mach numbers as low as 4·0.

The method has also been extended to Nonweiler wings at off-design when the shock wave is detached from the leading edges. Again the agreement with experiment is good provided the integral equation is solved numerically.

In the present work, the authors examine two computational approaches that can be used to study flexible flapping systems. For illustration, a fully coupled interaction of a fluid system with a flapping profile performing harmonic flapping kinematics is studied. In one approach, the fluid model is based on the Navier-Stokes equations for viscous incompressible flow, where all spatio-temporal scales are directly resolved by means of Direct Numerical Simulations (DNS). In the other approach, the fluid model is an inviscid, potential flow model, based on the unsteady vortex lattice method (UVLM). In the UVLM model, the focus is on vortex structures and the fluid dynamics is treated as a vortex kinematics problem, whereas with the DNS model, one is able to form a more detailed picture of the flapping physics. The UVLM based approach, although coarse from a modeling standpoint, is computationally inexpensive compared to the DNS based approach. This comparative study is motivated by the hypothesis that flapping related phenomena are primarily determined by vortex interactions and viscous effects play a secondary role, which could mean that a UVLM based approach could be suitable for design purposes and/or used as a predictive tool. In most of the cases studied, the UVLM based approach produces a good approximation. Apart from aerodynamic load comparisons, features of the system dynamics generated by using the two computational approaches are also compared. The authors also discuss limitations of both approaches.

In this paper, the multi-body dynamic model of an asymmetric variable sweep wing morphing UAV is built based on Kane’s method. This model describes the UAV’s transient behaviour during morphing process and the dynamic characteristic of the variable sweep wings. An integrated design of trajectory tracking control via constrained backstepping method is presented then. The idea of aircraft roll control through asymmetric wing sweep angle changes rather than traditional aileron is explored and used in the fight control design. The control of variable sweep wings is designed as well based on the presented dynamic model. Command filters are used in the backstepping design procedure to accommodate magnitude, rate and bandwidth constraints on virtual states and actuator signals. Stability of the closed-loop system can be proved in the sense of Lyapunov. Simulation of tracking a desired trajectory which contains two manoeuvres demonstrates the feasibility of the proposed protocol and the morphing wing roll controller.

Studies begun over ten years ago have shown that the swirling air flow about the tips of a lifting wing can be redirected using small aerofoil surfaces, called sails, to reduce the overall lift-dependent drag of the wing. Tests on Paris, Jetstream and other windtunnel models, confirmed by flight tests on Paris and Centurion aircraft have shown marked reductions in drag and fuel consumption. Handling tests show improvements in roll control and stalling speeds.

Wing tip sails have the effect of reducing the peak adverse effects on other aircraft flying through the wake of a Paris aircraft but reduce the decay rate so the far field effects are worsened. Sails fitted to a crop-spraying aircraft have significantly reduced the amount of spray lifted above the height of the aircraft by the tip vortices and subsequently blown off-target by a cross-wind.

Windtunnel tests on a model with variable incidence sails show that differential sail incidence can be used effectively to provide roll power, reducing the size of the ailerons required, so allowing a greater flap span. The maximum root bending moments of the wings can be reduced by at least 10% by using negative sail movements in positive manoeuvres or gusts.

Sails can reduce the drag of an aircraft at all speeds leading to fuel savings estimated at US$225 per annum per 1000lb take-off weight per 1000 hours annual utilisation. For an airliner of 300 000lb weight and operating for 3000 hours this means a fuel saving of over a fifth of a million dollars per year!

A method is described for calculating wall interference in solid-wall wind tunnels from measurements of static pressures at the walls. Since it does not require a simulation of the model flow, the technique is particularly suited to determining wall interference for complex flows such as those over VSTOL aircraft, helicopters and bluff shapes (e.g. cars and trucks). An experimental evaluation shows that the method gives wall-induced velocities which are in good agreement with those of existing methods in cases where these techniques are valid, and illustrates its effectiveness for inclined jets which are not readily modelled.

This paper focuses on the three dimensional flight path planning for an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) on a low altitude terrain following\terrain avoidance mission. The UAV trajectory planning problem is to compute an optimal or near-optimal trajectory for a UAV to do its mission objectives in a surviving penetration through the hostile enemy environment, considering the shape of the earth and the kinematics constraints of the UAV. Using the three dimensional terrain information, three dimensional flight path from a starting point to an end point, minimising a cost function and regarding the kinematics constraints of the UAV is calculated. The geographic information of the earth shape and enemy locations is generated using digital terrain model (DTM) and geographic information system (GIS), and is displayed in a 3D environment. Using 3D-maps containing the geographic data accompanied by DTM, and GIS, the problem is modelled by deriving the motion equations of the UAV. Two heuristic algorithms are proposed for this problem: genetic and particle swarm algorithms. Genetic and particle swarm algorithms are general purposes algorithms, because they can solve a wide range of problems, so they have to be adjusted to solve the trajectory planning problem. To test and compare the paths obtained from these algorithms, a software program is built using GIS tools and the programming languages C# and MATLAB.

An investigation has been carried out to examine one aspect of supersonic jet-engine inlet flow, namely shock-wave and boundary-layer interaction in the presence of an expansion corner. The experiment was undertaken at Mach numbers of 1.8 and 2.5. The local Reynolds number per metre varied from 2.79 to 3.13 × 107 for M = 1.8 and from 4.20 to 6.4-8 × 107 for M = 2.5. Adiabatic turbulent boundary layers of about 6 mm thick on an expansion-corner plate were disturbed at different streamwise positions by oblique shocks with deflection angles of 4°, 6° and 8°. The pressure distributions, wave patterns and the extent of the separation regions were strongly influenced by the presence of the expansion corner, especially when the shock impingement positions were upstream of the corner. The pressure rise induced by the incident shock began to decrease in level when the shock impingement position was about 3-4 boundary-layer thicknesses upstream of the corner. As the incident shock moved towards the corner, the pressure rise and the extent of the separation region decreased. When the shock impingement position was at the corner, the reflected shock was effectively neutralised by the Prandtl-Meyer expansion; especially when the deflection angle of incident shock matched that of the expansion corner. The three dimensionality of the incident shock and separation region is due to the interactions between the glancing oblique incident shock and the tunnel’s sidewall boundary layers.

The paper discusses the influence of wire length on the characteristics of a turbulent flow as measured with a hot-wire anemometer. Most of the mathematical treatment can be directly applied to other problems of length correction, such as may occur, for instance, in problems of astrophysical turbulence, as well as to some problems related to measurements of random processes. The discussion will, however, use the example of a hot-wire anemometer with particular attention to the influence of the length of the wire on the measurement of the intensity of turbulence, correlation coefficients, and scale and microscale of turbulence.

An experimental validation of an optimised wing geometry in the Price-Païdoussis subsonic wind tunnel is presented. Two wing models were manufactured using optimised glass fibre composite and tested at three speeds and various angle-of-attack. These wing models were constructed based on the original aerofoil shape of the ATR 42 aircraft and an optimised version of the same aerofoil for a flight condition of Mach number equal to 0.1 and angle-of-attack of 0°. The aerofoil's optimisation was realised using an ‘in-house’ genetic algorithm coupled with a cubic spline reconstruction routine, and was analysed using XFoil aerodynamic solver. The optimisation was concentrated on improving the laminar flow on the upper surface of the wing, between 10% and 70% of the chord. XFoil-predicted pressure distributions were compared with experimental data obtained in the wind tunnel. The transition position was estimated from the experimental pressure data using a second derivative methodology and was compared with the transition predicted by XFoil code. The results have shown the agreement between numerical and experimental data. The wind-tunnel tests have shown that the improvement of the laminar flow of the optimised wing is higher than the value predicted numerically.

This paper presents investigations of low-Reynolds-number flows past an SD7003 aerofoil at Re = 60k, where transition takes place across a laminar separation bubble (LSB). Results of experimental measurements and numerical calculations are analysed and discussed. In particular, reasonably good results were obtained using two different numerical approaches: Large-eddy simulation (LES) that demonstrated vortical structures at different transition stages, and where the transition occurred naturally; unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (URANS) simulations for several turbulence models based on the ω-length-scale equation, coupled to a linear stability solver to predict the transition position.

Conditions of thermal fatigue encountered in the Aircraft Industry are usually located in engine components subjected to severe temperature and stress cycling. These components include gas turbine blading, nozzle guide vanes, flame tubes and turbine discs fabricated from a number of different materials ranging from Nimonics to sheet iron— and cobalt-base alloys. In recent years considerable experimental work has been carried out to assess material behaviour under thermal fatigue conditions and several means of testing have emerged. Rapid heating and cooling cycles using a “fluidised bed” technique have been extensively applied by Glenny and co-workers, at NGTE, and by material manufacturers to aid alloy development. Other experimenters have used axial straining devices based on expansion and contraction of heated columns followed by air cooling. One aircraft engine manufacturer has developed a thermal fatigue rig incorporating a repeated tensile axial load and temperature cycle. A further means of assessment has been developed by Forrest at NPL, in which the test specimen is strain cycled under reverse-bend conditions at constant or fluctuating temperatures.

A computer program for use in the conceptual stage of aircraft design has been developed. The program obtains minimum mass designs for high aspect ratio, composite wings, subject to constraints on flutter speed, divergence speed and material stress. The wing is modelled as a series of composite beam elements and both flutter speed and divergence speed are calculated using a normal mode approach. Modal analysis is carried out by applying the Wittrick-Williams algorithm to the dynamic stiffness method, whereas unsteady aerodynamic loads are calculated from strip theory, although an option which uses lifting-surface theory is also presented. A previously published example is given to validate the analysis. Single level optimisation is carried out using a sequential quadratic programming strategy combined with the modified methods of feasible directions optimizer, for which flutter sensitivities are obtained by an efficient determinant interpolation technique. Design variables include topological variables such as spar and engine positions as well as layer thicknesses, which are modelled using quadratic functions. The wing of a regional turboprop aircraft is optimized to illustrate the use of the program. The problem was modelled using 10 elements and had 43 design variables, 162 constraints and required just over 20 minutes of CPU time on a workstation. This, coupled with the fact that a full three-dimensional FE model of the same wing would require over 1000 elements, illustrates the suitability of the dynamic stiffness method to the conceptual design stage.

This paper concerns the boundaries between flow regimes for sharp-edged delta wings in supersonic flow and the relation of some predictions of thin-shock-layer theory to these boundaries. In particular, it is shown that the theory predicts that the attachment lines on the lower surface of a thin delta wing at supersonic speeds suddenly jump from just inboard of the leading edges to the centre line in certain flight conditions. In general there is close agreement between the conditions for this jump and the flight conditions corresponding to the change-over from attached flow to the leading-edge separation on the upper surface. Since the movement of the attachment lines on the lower surface must change the position of the sonic line and the nature of the expansion around the edge, it is suggested that the two phenomena are directly related. Thus thin-shock-layer theory can be used to establish the boundaries of the various flow regimes for a wide range of Mach number, incidence and wing sweep. The theory can also be used to predict the effects of wing thickness on leading-edge separation, but here the experimental data is very sparse and somewhat contradictory, so the value of the prediction in the case of thickness requires further investigation.

This paper presents a review of the various aeronautical air conditioning systems that are currently available and discusses possible system configurations in the context of the aeronautical environmental control systems. Descriptions of the standard vapor compression cycle and air cycles are provided. The latter includes, simple-cycle, bootstrap-cycle, simple-bootstrap cycle (3-wheel) and condensing cycle (4-wheel). Water separation and air recirculation systems are also explored. A comparison between vapor compression cycles and air cycles is provided, as well as a comparison between different air cycles. Air cycle units are far less efficient than vapor compression cycle units, but they are lighter and more reliable for an equivalent cooling capacity. Details regarding the aircraft conceptual design phase along with general criteria for the selection of an air conditioning system are provided. Additionally, industry trends and technological advances are examined. Conclusions are compiled to guide the systems engineer in the search for the most appropriate design for a particular application.

Previous papers by the authors and others have developed exact methods for computing the critical buckling loads of prismatic assemblies of rigidly interconnected thin flat rectangular plates. The plates may be isotropic or anisotropic and can carry uniform in-plane shear stresses and transverse stresses in addition to a longitudinal stress which varies linearly over the cross section but is longitudinally invariant. Published results obtained using these methods have only covered a few of the types of structure and loading which are of interest. This paper presents results which complement those already published. For instance, interaction curves are given for common types of panel in combined in-plane shear and longitudinal compression and bending. About half of these curves are nearly parabolic while some others differ greatly from the parabola, which errs on the safe side for all the results presented. Other results cover critical loads other than the lowest, panels with bulb flat stiffeners, as used for bridge decks, and the effects of assumptions usually made when idealising real panels before computation.

Topology optimisation is a useful tool for the design of aircraft structures. This work details how the new moving iso-surface threshold (MIST) topology optimisation method works and how it can be applied to aircraft structural design. This method has been coupled with commercial finite element analysis software in a simple manner without requiring the modification of the commercial software source code. In this way the user is able to take advantage of the finite element analysis tools such as automatic mesh generation and efficient solving. The extension of the method to 3D designs is also presented. The topology results of a 2D leading-edge rib for stiffness, stress and morphing objectives and a 3D wing skin stringer for stress design demonstrate the functionality of this method.

A method of calculation has been developed in which all terms in the momentum integral equations in the streamwise and cross-flow directions are taken into account so that no restriction to small cross-flows is imposed. The essential feature of the method is the use of an entrainment equation which enables the development of the streamwise form parameter to be calculated along with the streamwise and cross-flow momentum thicknesses. Mager’s quadratic expression is used to relate streamwise and cross-flow profiles. The method has been applied to the idealised case of an infinite swept wing with free-stream velocity over the forward part of the chord and a linear adverse velocity gradient over the rear. The position of separation, the directions of the surface streamlines and the development of streamwise and cross-flow profiles have been calculated for a series of angles of sweep and for adverse pressure gradients of varying severity.
