Summary
In one sense, Hohfeld’s 1913 article on fundamental legal conceptions has been a stunning success.1 In the history of twentieth-century legal thought, it has played a significant role in shaping legal realism, law and economics, critical legal studies, analytical jurisprudence, and property theory. Today, more than a century later, it has opened areas of inquiry and lines of analytical advent that remain powerful and productive.
