Summary
A sampling of those persons who are most widely accepted as being Palestinian Christian peacemakers in Israel/Palestine, are Mitri Raheb, Jean Zaru, Hanan Mikhail-Ashrawi, Naim Ateek and Elias Chacour.
The Rev. Dr Mitri Raheb, a Lutheran pastor, is a Palestinian Arab born in Bethlehem in 1962. He presently serves as the General Director of the International Center of Bethlehem (ICB, or in Arabic Dar Annadwa Adduwalia), which was founded in 1995, and as the founder of Dar al-Kalima School and Academy, which was founded in 1998. He has served as Pastor of the Evangelical Lutheran Christmas Church in Bethlehem since 1988. Raheb received his undergraduate degree from Hermannsburg Mission Seminary, Germany, in 1984. His major was Protestant Theology. He completed his master and doctoral degrees, from Philipps University Marburg, Germany, with the same major. He and his wife, Najwa, have two daughters.
Dr Raheb's International Center was the place to which people were bringing food and water and medicine during the military invasion of Bethlehem in April, 2002. As I read his book, Bethlehem Besieged, Stories of Hope in Times of Trouble, I was reminded of that time in 2002, for I was in Jerusalem trying, with others, to bring needed items to besieged Bethlehem. Along with members of the Christian Peacemaking Team, I went in a car to deliver supplies to the people in Bethlehem.
