Abstract
As the fight for global dominance between the United States and China continues to ramp up, monopolies over the key resources that underpin technological development and broader manufacturing have become an interest of national security. Interest in both perceptual and real economic dominance that is signaled by possession over rare earth elements or metals (REEs or REMs) is showcased by the rapid increase in reactionary REE development by both the United States and China (Easley, 2023) (Baskaran, 2024). To understand if this geopolitical maneuvering actually impacts markets and eventually consumers, a review of the current literature behind rare earth element pricing is needed.
