We prove some conditions for higher-dimensional algebraic fibering of pro-p group extensions, and we establish corollaries about incoherence of pro-p groups. In particular, if $1 \to K \to G \to \Gamma \to 1$ is a short exact sequence of pro-p groups, such that $\Gamma $ contains a finitely generated, non-abelian, free pro-p subgroup, K a finitely presented pro-p group with N a normal pro-p subgroup of K such that $K/ N \simeq \mathbb {Z}_p$ and N not finitely generated as a pro-p group, then G is incoherent (in the category of pro-p groups). Furthermore, we show that if K is a finitely generated, free pro-p group with $d(K) \geq 2$, then either $\mathrm{Aut}_0(K)$ is incoherent (in the category of pro-p groups) or there is a finitely presented pro-p group, without non-procyclic free pro-p subgroups, that has a metabelian pro-p quotient that is not finitely presented, i.e., a pro-p version of a result of Bieri–Strebel does not hold.

For a Galois extension $K/F$ with $\text {char}(K)\neq 2$ and $\mathrm {Gal}(K/F) \simeq \mathbb {Z}/2\mathbb {Z}\oplus \mathbb {Z}/2\mathbb {Z}$ , we determine the $\mathbb {F}_{2}[\mathrm {Gal}(K/F)]$ -module structure of $K^{\times }/K^{\times 2}$ . Although there are an infinite number of (pairwise nonisomorphic) indecomposable $\mathbb {F}_{2}[\mathbb {Z}/2\mathbb {Z}\oplus \mathbb {Z}/2\mathbb {Z}]$ -modules, our decomposition includes at most nine indecomposable types. This paper marks the first time that the Galois module structure of power classes of a field has been fully determined when the modular representation theory allows for an infinite number of indecomposable types.

A right Engel sink of an element g of a group G is a set ${\mathscr R}(g)$ such that for every x ∈ G all sufficiently long commutators $[...[[g,x],x],\dots ,x]$ belong to ${\mathscr R}(g)$. (Thus, g is a right Engel element precisely when we can choose ${\mathscr R}(g)=\{ 1\}$.) It is proved that if every element of a compact (Hausdorff) group G has a countable right Engel sink, then G has a finite normal subgroup N such that G/N is locally nilpotent.

In this paper we introduce the notion of finite virtual length for profinite groups (that is, every series has a bounded number of infinite factors) and we prove a Jordan–Hölder type theorem for profinite groups with finite virtual length. More structural results are provided in the pronilpotent and $p$-adic analytic cases.
