Turbulent flows in three dimensions are characterized by the transport of energy from large to small scales through the energy cascade. Since the small scales are the result of the nonlinear dynamics across the scales, they are often thought of as universal and independent of the large scales. However, as famously remarked by Landau, sufficiently slow variations of the large scales should nonetheless be expected to impact small-scale statistics. Such variations, often termed large-scale intermittency, are pervasive in experiments and even in simulations, while differing from flow to flow. Here, we evaluate the impact of temporal large-scale fluctuations on velocity, vorticity and acceleration statistics by introducing controlled sinusoidal variations of the energy injection rate into direct numerical simulations of turbulence. We find that slow variations can have a strong impact on flow statistics, raising the flatness of the considered quantities. We discern three contributions to the increased flatness, which we model by superpositions of statistically stationary flows. Overall, our work demonstrates how large-scale intermittency needs to be taken into account in order to ensure comparability of statistical results in turbulence.

We investigate nonlinear energy transfer for channel flows at friction Reynolds numbers $Re_{\tau }=180$ and $590$. The key feature of the analysis is that we quantify the energy transferred from a source mode to a recipient mode, with each mode characterised by a streamwise wavenumber and a spanwise wavenumber. This is achieved through an explicit examination of the triadic interactions of the nonlinear energy transfer term in the spectral turbulent kinetic energy equation. First, we quantify the nonlinear energy transfer gain and loss for individual Fourier modes. The gain and loss cannot be obtained without expanding the nonlinear triadic interactions. Second, we quantify the nonlinear energy transfer budgets for three types of modes. Each type of mode is characterised by a specific region in streamwise–spanwise wavenumber space. We find that a transverse cascade from streamwise-elongated modes to spanwise-elongated modes exists for all three types of modes. Third, we quantify the forward and inverse cascades between resolved scales and subgrid scales in the spirit of large-eddy simulations. For the cutoff wavelength range that we consider, the forward and inverse cascades between the resolved scales and subgrid scales result in a net forward cascade from the resolved scales to the subgrid scales. The shape of the net forward cascade curve with respect to the cutoff wavelength resembles the net forward cascade predicted by the Smagorinsky eddy viscosity.

In recent years, the generalised quasilinear (GQL) approximation has been developed and its efficacy tested against purely quasilinear (QL) approximations. GQL systematically interpolates between QL and fully nonlinear dynamics by employing a generalised Reynolds decomposition. Here, we examine an exact statistical closure for the GQL equations on the doubly periodic $\beta$-plane. Closure is achieved at second order using a generalised cumulant approach which we term GCE2. GCE2 is shown to yield improved performance over statistical representations of purely QL dynamics (CE2) and thus enables direct statistical simulation of complex mean flows that do not entirely fall within the remit of pure QL theory. Despite the existence of an exact closure, GCE2 like CE2 admits the possibility of a rank instability that leads to differences with statistics obtained from GQL. Recognition of this instability is a necessary step before further progress can be made with the GCE2 statistical closure.

Adverse pressure gradient (APG) turbulent boundary layers (TBL) require an understanding of the details of the pressure gradient, or history effect, to characterize the associated variation of spatiotemporal turbulent statistics. The streamwise-varying mean pressure gradient is reflected in the streamwise developing mean flow field and thus resolvent analysis, which captures the amplification of the Navier–Stokes equations linearized about the turbulent mean, can be used to understand linear amplification in APG TBLs. In particular, by using a biglobal approach in which the amplification is characterized by a temporal frequency and spanwise wavenumber, the streamwise and wall-normal inhomogeneities of the APG TBL can be resolved and related to the APG history. The linear response is able to identify multiscale phenomena, identifying a near-wall peak with $\lambda _{z}^+\approx 100$ for zero pressure gradient TBLs and mild to moderate APG TBLs as well as large-scale modes whose amplification increases with APG strength and Reynolds number. It is shown that the monotonic growth in the turbulent statistics with increasing APG is reflected in the linear growth in the associated resolvent amplification. Collapse in the Reynolds stresses is obtained through an augmented hybrid velocity scale, which replaces the local APG strength measure in the hybrid velocity scale presented in Romero et al. (Intl J. Heat Fluid Flow, vol. 93, 2022, 108885) with a velocity that encapsulates the pressure gradient history. While this resolvent approach is applicable to any APG TBL, it is shown from a scaling analysis of the linearized Navier–Stokes equations that the linear growth observed in the resolvent amplification with the history effect is limited to near-equilibrium APG TBLs.

The eddy-viscosity model, as initially used to model the mean Reynolds stress, has been widely used in the linear analysis of turbulence recently by direct extension. In this study, the mechanism of the eddy viscosity in improving the prediction of fluctuation structures with linear analysis is clarified by investigating the statistical properties of forcing, eddy-viscosity term and their correlations. From the direct numerical simulation (DNS) results of turbulent channel flows with $Re_{\tau }=186$–$2003$, the spatial correlation of forcing is partially cancelled due to its interaction with eddy-viscosity terms. The stochastic forcing after excluding the eddy-viscosity term is nearly uncorrelated spatially, which better matches the condition where the resolvent modes are consistent with the spectral proper orthogonal decomposition (SPOD) modes from DNS. With the above findings, an optimisation framework is developed by minimising the spatial correlations of the stochastic forcing. The optimised eddy-viscosity profiles nearly overlap with the mean-quantity-based model in the near-wall region, but have different maximum values. Compared with the mean-quantity-based model, the optimised results enhance the consistency between the resolvent and DNS results significantly. Based on the optimised results, a new modelling framework is further abstracted, leaving only one to-be-modelled parameter of the maximum value of the eddy-viscosity profile. This parameter follows distinctive rules with spanwise flow scales, based on which a simplified predictive model is constructed. The resolvent modes predicted by the new model exhibit high consistency with SPOD modes, which are essentially comparable to the optimised results for wide ranges of streamwise and spanwise scales.

Direct numerical simulations are performed to explore the evolution behaviour of the turbulent/non-turbulent interface (TNTI) in a temporally evolving turbulent plane jet, using the evolution equation for the TNTI surface area. A novel algorithm is used to calculate the surface area of the TNTI and entrainment flux. It is shown that the surface area remains relatively constant, which leads to the mean entrainment velocity being inversely proportional to the square root of time. On average, the effects of the stretching and curvature/viscous terms on the TNTI area roughly counterbalance each other, while the curvature/inviscid term associated with vortex stretching is virtually zero. More specifically, the stretching term contributes to the production of the surface area, while the curvature/viscous term is associated with a destruction in the surface area. The local effect of the curvature/viscous term exhibits high spatial intermittency with small-scale extreme/intense events, whereas the effect of the large-scale stretching term is more continuous. To shed light on the contribution of curvature/viscous term to the evolution of the surface area, we decompose it into three components. The effect of the curvature/normal diffusion term (the curvature/viscous dissipation term) in the bulging regions (the valley regions) mainly contributes to the production of the area. The continuous decrease of the average mean curvature is associated with the production of the bulging regions and the destruction of the valley regions. Finally, although the entrainment velocity is mainly dominated by the normal diffusion effect, all three components related to the viscous effect are indispensable to the production and destruction of the TNTI area. This numerical study contributes to a better understanding of the evolution of the TNTI area.

Not all the information in a turbulent field is relevant for understanding particular regions or variables in the flow. Here, we present a method for decomposing a source field into its informative $\boldsymbol {\varPhi }_{I}(\boldsymbol {x},t)$ and residual $\boldsymbol {\varPhi }_{R}(\boldsymbol {x},t)$ components relative to another target field. The method is referred to as informative and non-informative decomposition (IND). All the necessary information for physical understanding, reduced-order modelling and control of the target variable is contained in $\boldsymbol {\varPhi }_{I}(\boldsymbol {x},t)$, whereas $\boldsymbol {\varPhi }_{R}(\boldsymbol {x},t)$ offers no substantial utility in these contexts. The decomposition is formulated as an optimisation problem that seeks to maximise the time-lagged mutual information of the informative component with the target variable while minimising the mutual information with the residual component. The method is applied to extract the informative and residual components of the velocity field in a turbulent channel flow, using the wall shear stress as the target variable. We demonstrate the utility of IND in three scenarios: (i) physical insight into the effect of the velocity fluctuations on the wall shear stress; (ii) prediction of the wall shear stress using velocities far from the wall; and (iii) development of control strategies for drag reduction in a turbulent channel flow using opposition control. In case (i), IND reveals that the informative velocity related to wall shear stress consists of wall-attached high- and low-velocity streaks, collocated with regions of vertical motions and weak spanwise velocity. This informative structure is embedded within a larger-scale streak–roll structure of residual velocity, which bears no information about the wall shear stress. In case (ii), the best-performing model for predicting wall shear stress is a convolutional neural network that uses the informative component of the velocity as input, while the residual velocity component provides no predictive capabilities. Finally, in case (iii), we demonstrate that the informative component of the wall-normal velocity is closely linked to the observability of the target variable and holds the essential information needed to develop successful control strategies.

By comparing the budget of a data-driven quasi-linear approximation (DQLA) (Holford, Lee & Hwang, J. Fluid Mech., vol. 980, 2024, A12) and direct numerical simulation (DNS) (Lee & Moser, J. Fluid Mech., vol. 860, 2019, pp. 886–938), the energetics of linear models for wall-bounded turbulence are assessed. The DQLA is implemented with the linearised Navier–Stokes equations with a stochastic forcing term and an eddy viscosity diffusion model. The self-consistent nature of the DQLA allows for a global comparison across all wavenumbers to assess the role of the various terms in the linear model in replicating the features present in DNS. Starting from the steady-state second-order statistics of a Fourier mode, a spectral budget equation is derived, connecting Lyapunov-like equations to the transport budget equations obtained from DNS. It is found that the DQLA and DNS are in good qualitative agreement for the streamwise-elongated structures present in DNS, comparing well for production, viscous transport and wall-normal turbulent transport. However, the DQLA does not have an energy-conservative nonlinear term. This results in no dissipation under molecular viscosity, with energy instead being dissipated locally through the eddy viscosity model, which models the energy removal by the nonlinear term at integral length scales. Comparison of the pressure–strain statistics also highlights the absence of the streak instability, with production and forcing mainly being retained in the streamwise and wall-normal components or shifted to the spanwise component. It is demonstrated that the eddy viscosity diffusion term locally enforces a self-similar budget, making the model for the nonlinear term self-consistent with a logarithmic mean profile. Implications and recommendations to improve the current eddy viscosity enhanced linear models are also discussed concerning the comparison with DNS, as well as considerations with regard to pressure statistics to mimic the role of the streak instability through colour of turbulence models.

The causal relevance of local flow conditions in open-channel turbulence is analysed using ensembles of interventional experiments in which the effect of perturbing the flow within a small cell is monitored at some future time. When this is done using the relative amplification of the perturbation energy, causality depends on the flow conditions within the cell before it is perturbed, and can be used as a probe of the flow dynamics. The key scaling parameter is the ambient shear, which is also the dominant diagnostic variable for wall-attached perturbations. Away from the wall, the relevant variables are the streamwise and wall-normal velocities. Causally significant cells are associated with sweeps that carry the perturbation towards the stronger shear near the wall, whereas irrelevant ones are associated with ejections that carry it towards the weaker shear in the outer layers. Causally significant and irrelevant cells are themselves organised into structures that share many characteristics with classical sweeps and ejections, such as forming spanwise pairs whose dimensions and geometry are similar to those of classical quadrants. At the wall, this is consistent with causally significant configurations in which a high-speed streak overtakes a low-speed one, and causally irrelevant ones in which the two streaks pull apart from each other. It is argued that this is probably associated with streak meandering.

Wind tunnel measurements of the incident turbulent velocity fields and axial forces on a horizontal axis turbine and porous disc analogues are reported. The models were tested in both a simulated atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) and in grid turbulence, allowing for a range of turbulence length scale to rotor diameter ratios to be considered. A theoretical framework to account for the combined effect of distortion and potential flow blocking in the induction zone is presented. In the case of very large length-scale turbulence to diameter ratios, where distortion effects are minimal, a quasi-steady approach is adopted for the effect of blocking. For the small length-scale ratio limit, the method is developed from the classical analyses for rapid distortion of turbulence and blockage from flow through a porous sheet of resistance. For general length-scale ratios, an efficient prediction method based on interpolation between the two length-scale ratio extremes is established. For very large length-scale ratios, a quasi-steady theory without distortion is appropriate for a rotor or disc in a simulated ABL. The small length-scale theory is applicable for tests conducted in grid turbulence. The results of the study can inform the prediction and interpretation of typical measurements of turbulence within the induction zone and the fluctuating loads on a rotor, at both prototype and full scale. This is of particular importance to fatigue load assessments.

A long-standing issue in pipe flow physics is whether the friction of the fluid follows a logarithmic or an algebraic decay. In 2005, McKeon et al. (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 538, 2005, pp. 429–443) published a detailed analysis of new measurements in the Princeton facility, and apparently settled the debate by showing that ‘the log is the law’. Almost 20 years later, no better data are presently available to reinforce their statement. Still, the story may not be totally over, and this is bad news for mathematicians who were hoping to get a long awaited final answer to one of their most elusive questions.

Resolvent analysis provides a framework to predict coherent spatio-temporal structures of the largest linear energy amplification, through a singular value decomposition (SVD) of the resolvent operator, obtained by linearising the Navier–Stokes equations about a known turbulent mean velocity profile. Resolvent analysis utilizes a Fourier decomposition in time, which has thus far limited its application to statistically stationary or time-periodic flows. This work develops a variant of resolvent analysis applicable to time-evolving flows, and proposes a variant that identifies spatio-temporally sparse structures, applicable to either stationary or time-varying mean velocity profiles. Spatio-temporal resolvent analysis is formulated through the incorporation of the temporal dimension to the numerical domain via a discrete time-differentiation operator. Sparsity (which manifests in localisation) is achieved through the addition of an $l_1$-norm penalisation term to the optimisation associated with the SVD. This modified optimisation problem can be formulated as a nonlinear eigenproblem and solved via an inverse power method. We first showcase the implementation of the sparse analysis on a statistically stationary turbulent channel flow, and demonstrate that the sparse variant can identify aspects of the physics not directly evident from standard resolvent analysis. This is followed by applying the sparse space–time formulation on systems that are time varying: a time-periodic turbulent Stokes boundary layer and then a turbulent channel flow with a sudden imposition of a lateral pressure gradient, with the original streamwise pressure gradient unchanged. We present results demonstrating how the sparsity-promoting variant can either change the quantitative structure of the leading space–time modes to increase their sparsity, or identify entirely different linear amplification mechanisms compared with non-sparse resolvent analysis.

The research on elasto-inertial turbulence (EIT), a new type of turbulent flow, has reached the stage of identifying the minimal flow unit (MFU). On this issue, direct numerical simulations of FENE-P fluid flow in two-dimensional channels with variable sizes are conducted in this study. We demonstrate with the increase of channel length that the simulated flow experiences several different flow patterns, and there exists an MFU for EIT to be self-sustained. At Weissenberg number ($Wi$) higher than the one required to excite EIT, when the channel length is relatively small, a steady arrowhead regime (SAR) flow structure and a laminar-like friction coefficient is achieved. However, as the channel length increases, the flow can fully develop into EIT characterized with high flow drag. Close to the size of the MFU, the simulated flow behaves intermittently between the SAR state with low drag and EIT state with high drag. The flow falling back to ‘laminar flow’ is caused by the insufficient channel size below the MFU. Furthermore, we give the relationship between the value of the MFU and the effective $Wi$, and explain its physical reasons. Moreover, the intermittent flow regime obtained based on the MFU gives us an opportunity to look into the origin and exciting process of EIT. Through capturing the onset process of EIT, we observed that EIT originates from the sheet-like extension structure located near the wall, which is maybe related to the wall mode rather than the centre mode. The fracture and regeneration of this sheet-like structure is the key mechanism for the self-sustaining of EIT.

This work introduces a formulation of resolvent analysis that uses wavelet transforms rather than Fourier transforms in time. Under this formulation, resolvent analysis may extend to turbulent flows with non-stationary mean states. The optimal resolvent modes are augmented with a temporal dimension and are able to encode the time-transient trajectories that are most amplified by the linearised Navier–Stokes equations. We first show that the wavelet- and Fourier-based resolvent analyses give equivalent results for statistically stationary flow by applying them to turbulent channel flow. We then use wavelet-based resolvent analysis to study the transient growth mechanism in the near-wall region of a turbulent channel flow by windowing the resolvent operator in time and frequency. The computed principal resolvent response mode, i.e. the velocity field optimally amplified by the linearised dynamics of the flow, exhibits characteristics of the Orr mechanism, which supports the claim that this mechanism is key to linear transient energy growth. We also apply this method to non-stationary parallel shear flows such as an oscillating boundary layer, and three-dimensional channel flow in which a sudden spanwise pressure gradient perturbs a fully developed turbulent channel flow. In both cases, wavelet-based resolvent analysis yields modes that are sensitive to the changing mean profile of the flow. For the oscillating boundary layer, wavelet-based resolvent analysis produces oscillating principal forcing and response modes that peak at times and wall-normal locations associated with high turbulent activity. For the turbulent channel flow under a sudden spanwise pressure gradient, the resolvent modes gradually realign themselves with the mean flow as the latter deviates. Wavelet-based resolvent analysis thus captures the changes in the transient linear growth mechanisms caused by a time-varying turbulent mean profile.

In the present study, we propose a Reynolds analogy model for compressible wall turbulence. This model is demonstrated to be able to alleviate the defects of the generalized Reynolds analogy model (GRA) (Zhang et al., J. Fluid Mech., vol. 739, 2014, pp. 392–420), and maintains its success in describing the mean velocity–temperature relation. Furthermore, the present model is superior to the GRA in depicting the relationship between their fluctuating fields and also bridges the gap between the phenomenological model and the mathematical representation of the Reynolds analogy. The key points of the present model are validated by analysing the data of compressible wall-bounded turbulence with different Mach numbers, Reynolds numbers and wall thermal conditions.

Quantifying transport by strongly stratified turbulence in low Prandtl number ($Pr$) fluids is critically important for the development of better models for the structure and evolution of stellar and planetary interiors. Motivated by recent numerical simulations showing strongly anisotropic flows suggestive of a scale-separated dynamics, we perform a multiscale asymptotic analysis of the governing equations. We find that, in all cases, the resulting slow–fast systems take a quasilinear form. Our analysis also reveals the existence of several distinct dynamical regimes depending on the emergent buoyancy Reynolds and Péclet numbers, $Re_b = \alpha ^2 Re$ and $Pe_b = Pr Re_b$, respectively, where $\alpha$ is the aspect ratio of the large-scale turbulent flow structures, and $Re$ is the outer-scale Reynolds number. Scaling relationships relating the aspect ratio, the characteristic vertical velocity and the strength of the stratification (measured by the Froude number $Fr$) naturally emerge from the analysis. When $Pe_b \ll \alpha$, the dynamics at all scales is dominated by buoyancy diffusion, and our results recover the scaling laws empirically obtained from direct numerical simulations by Cope et al. (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 903, 2020, A1). For $Pe_b \ge O(1)$, diffusion is negligible (or at least subdominant) at all scales and our results are consistent with those of Chini et al. (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 933, 2022) for strongly stratified geophysical turbulence at $Pr =O(1)$. Finally, we have identified a new regime for $\alpha \ll Pe_b \ll 1$, in which slow, large scales are diffusive while fast, small scales are not. We conclude by presenting a map of parameter space that clearly indicates the transitions between isotropic turbulence, non-diffusive stratified turbulence, diffusive stratified turbulence and viscously dominated flows, and by proposing parameterisations of the buoyancy flux, mixing efficiency and turbulent diffusion coefficient for each regime.

In the generalized quasilinear approximation (GQLA) (Marston et al., Phys. Rev. Lett., vol. 116, 2016, 214501), a threshold wavenumber ($k_0$) in the direction of translational symmetry segregates the total into large- ($l$) and small-scale ($h$) fields. While the governing equation for the large-scale field is fully nonlinear, that for the small scales is linearized with respect to the large-scale field. In addition, some nonlinear triad interactions are omitted in the GQLA. Herein, the GQLA is applied to two-dimensional planar Rayleigh–Bénard convection (RBC). A scale separation between the large-scale convection rolls and small-scale turbulent fluctuations is typical in RBC. The present work explores the efficacy of GQLA in capturing the scale-by-scale energy transfer processes in RBC. The initial condition for the GQLA simulations was either the statistically stationary state obtained in direct numerical simulation (DNS) or random fluctuations superimposed on the linear conductive temperature profile and $\boldsymbol {u}=0$. The GQLA simulations can capture the convection rolls for $k_0$ larger than or equal to the dominant wavenumber for thermal driving of the flow ($k_0 \ge k_{\hat {Q}}$). Additionally, the GQLA emulates the fully nonlinear dynamics for $k_0$ larger than or equal to the first harmonic of the convection-roll wavenumber ($k_0 \ge 2k_{roll}$). In the intermediate regime with $2k_{roll} > k_0 \ge k_{\hat {Q}}$, the dynamics captured in GQLA simulations is different from the DNS. In DNS, two primary energy transfer processes dominate: (i) the energy transfer to/from the convection rolls and (ii) the scale-by-scale inverse kinetic energy and forward thermal energy cascades mediated by the convection rolls. The fully nonlinear dynamics is emulated by GQLA when these energy transfer processes are faithfully reproduced. Utilizing the framework of altering the triad interactions in GQLA, an additional intrusive calculation, including target triad interactions, is performed here to study their influence. This intrusive calculation shows that the convection rolls are not captured in GQLA for $k_0 < k_{\hat {Q}}$ because of the exclusion of the $h \to l \to l$ and $l \to h \to h$ triad interactions in GQLA. The inclusion of these triad interactions in the intrusive calculation yields the convection rolls, and the reproduced dynamics is similar to that of the intermediate GQLA regime with $2k_{roll} > k_0 \ge k_{\hat {Q}}$.

We present a new derivation of the kinetic equation for weak, non-hydrostatic internal gravity wave turbulence. The equation is equivalent to the one obtained by Caillol & Zeitlin (Dyn. Atmos. Oceans, vol. 32, issue 2, 2000, pp. 81–112), but it takes a canonical form. We show that it conserves the energy without involving the resonance condition in frequency, and look for the isotropic part of the steady, scale-invariant solutions. We provide a parametrization of the resonant manifold of non-hydrostatic internal gravity wave triadic interactions. This allows us to simplify the collision integral, and to evaluate the transfer coefficients of all triadic interactions. In the hydrostatic limit, our equation is equivalent to the Hamiltonian description of Lvov & Tabak (Phys. Rev. Lett., vol. 87, issue 16, 2001, 168501).

In this study, the resolvent-based estimation (RBE) is further generalised to cases with arbitrarily sampled measurements in time, where the generalised RBE is denoted as GRBE in this study. Different from the RBE that constructs the transfer function at each frequency, the GRBE minimises the estimation error energy in the physical temporal domain by considering the forcing and noise statistics. The GRBE is validated by estimating the complex Ginzburg–Landau equation and turbulent channel flows with the friction Reynolds number $Re_{\tau }=186$, 547 and 934, where the results from the RBE are also included. When the measurements are temporally resolved, the estimation results of the two approaches are equivalent to each other, and both match well with the reference numerical results. For the temporally unresolved cases, the estimation errors from the GRBE are obviously lower than those from the RBE. After validation, the GRBE is applied to investigate the impacts of the abundance of the measured information, including the temporal information and sensor types, on the estimation accuracy. Compared with the mean square error (MSE) in the estimation with temporally resolved measurements, that with measurements at only one snapshot, i.e. without any temporal information, increases by approximately $15\,\%$. On the other hand, it can effectively improve the estimation accuracy by increasing the number of sensor types. With temporally resolved measurements, the relative MSE decreases by $12.3\,\%$ when the sensor types increase from $\lbrace \tau _u \rbrace$ to $\lbrace \tau _u,\tau _w,p \rbrace$, where $\tau_u$, $\tau_w$ and p are the streamwise shear stress, spanwise shear stress and pressure at the wall. Finally, several existing forcing models are incorporated into the GRBE to investigate their performance in the linear estimation of flow state. The wall-distance-dependent model (W-model) results match well with the optimal linear estimations when the measurements are temporally unresolved. Meanwhile, with the increase of temporal information of the measurement, the estimation errors from the tested W-model and the scale-dependent model ($\lambda$-model) both increase, which contradicts the tendency observed in the optimal linear GRBE estimation results. Such a phenomenon highlights the importance of proper modelling of the forcing in the temporal domain for the accuracy of flow state estimation.

Time-resolved two-dimensional two-component particle image velocimetry measurements with high spatial resolution are carried out in a water tank agitated by four blades rotating at constant speed. Different blade geometries and rotation speeds are tested for the purpose of modifying turbulent flow conditions. In all cases where no baffles are used to break the rotation, the Zeman length is an order of magnitude smaller than the Taylor length. Compared with the cases with baffles which break the rotation, in the unbaffled cases turbulence production and/or mean advection are significant and the turbulence nonlinearity is dramatically reduced for the horizontal (i.e. normal to the axis of rotation) two-point turbulence fluctuating velocities. This nonlinearity reduction is manifest not only in the interscale turbulent energy transfer but also in the interspace turbulent energy transfer, which nearly vanishes. However, the nonlinearity is not reduced for the vertical two-point turbulence fluctuating velocities: the corresponding interscale turbulent transfer rate is in fact intensified, and its dependence on the two-point separation distance, as well as that of the corresponding interspace turbulent transfer rate, which does not vanish, is significantly modified. Even though non-homogeneities are very different for different blades and rotation speeds in the unbaffled cases, the horizontal fluctuating velocity's second-order structure function collapses with scalings which resemble predictions for homogeneous turbulence subject to strong rotation. The vertical fluctuating velocity's second-order structure function does not collapse for different blade geometries by neither these nor the Kolmogorov predictions.
