Adjuvants influence weed control and crop tolerance provided by postemergence (POST) herbicides. Adjuvant effects on weed control and corn and soybean tolerance with CGA-248757 and flumiclorac applied alone and soybean tolerance with CGA-248757 and flumiclorac applied in combination with imazethapyr or CGA-277476 were evaluated. Velvetleaf control in the greenhouse and common lambsquarters, redroot pigweed, and common ragweed control in the greenhouse and field with CGA-248757 and flumiclorac were increased by the addition of an adjuvant. However, corn and soybean tolerance to these herbicides was not affected by adding an adjuvant. Laboratory studies suggest enhanced weed control from the addition of an adjuvant resulted from an increase in CGA-248757 and flumiclorac foliar absorption. In greenhouse studies, velvetleaf, common lambsquarters, and redroot pigweed control with CGA-248757 plus imazethapyr; velvetleaf control with flumiclorac plus imazethapyr; redroot pigweed and common ragweed control with CGA-248757 plus CGA-277476; and velvetleaf, redroot pigweed, and common ragweed control with flumiclorac plus CGA-277476 increased by adding an organosilicone adjuvant when compared with adding a nonionic surfactant (NIS). However, in field evaluations of CGA-248757 or flumiclorac plus imazethapyr, the addition of NIS or an organosilicone adjuvant resulted in equivalent soybean injury, common lambsquarters and redroot pigweed control, and soybean yield. Yet in tank mixtures of CGA-248757 or flumiclorac plus CGA-277476, the addition of an organosilicone adjuvant increased redroot pigweed control and soybean yield compared to adding NIS.

Flumioxazin plus metolachlor mixtures preemergence (PRE) were evaluated with or without postemergence (POST) herbicides for weed control and peanut (Arachis hypogaea) response in three North Carolina studies. Metolachlor PRE at 2.24 kg ai/ha controlled goosegrass (Eleusine indica) and yellow nutsedge (Cyperus esculentus) 93 and 80%, respectively, and control was not improved with flumioxazin or norflurazon. Metolachlor plus flumioxazin PRE at 0.07 or 0.11 kg ai/ha controlled common lambsquarters (Chenopodium album); entireleaf (Ipomoea hederacea var. integriuscula), ivyleaf (I. hederacea), and pitted morningglory (I. lacunosa); and prickly sida (Sida spinosa) better than metolachlor plus norflurazon PRE at 1.34 kg ai/ha. Morningglories (Ipomoea spp.) were controlled 77 and 86% with flumioxazin PRE at 0.07 and 0.11 kg/ha, respectively, and control was increased to nearly 100% with acifluorfen plus 2,4-DB or lactofen plus 2,4-DB POST. Peanut injury by flumioxazin and norflurazon was observed at one location in 1997; however, yields were not reduced. Peanut treated with metolachlor plus flumioxazin PRE at either rate yielded at least 3,750 kg/ha compared to 3,120 kg/ha with metolachlor plus norflurazon PRE or 1,320 kg/ha with metolachlor PRE.

Field validation studies were conducted in seven Mississippi environments at three application timings to confirm postemergence (POST) recommendations generated by the computer herbicide decision aids HERB and SWC. HERB and SWC agreed on herbicide treatments in only 14% of the location–application timing combinations. Weed scientists involved in the study agreed on treatment recommendations approximately 33% of the time. The HERB model agreed with a faculty member on only one herbicide treatment, while the SWC model was slightly more agreeable in this regard. Subsequent weed flushes, varied production practices, and delayed weed emergence accounted for a majority of the underestimated predictions given by HERB. Only 55% of the predicted values presented for estimated weed control ratings were similar to actual weed control ratings. Over 75% of the predictions that differed from actual weed control values were underpredictions. Recommendations from both computer models were effective in reducing yield loss below that of the untreated check, and recommendations from the HERB model generally improved yield more than those from the SWC model in most instances. HERB and SWC predictions of yield losses with no weed control were not significantly different from the actual yield loss from the untreated check in nine of the 12 instances at Starkville, seven of the 12 instances at Brooksville, six of the 12 instances at Newton, and three of the six instances at Hollandale. The HERB model estimated yield loss similar to that of the actual yield loss 83% of the time, while predictions from the SWC model were accurate 76% of the time. HERB overestimated yield loss in six of 21 application timing–experiment combinations and underestimated yield loss only once. Yield loss was overpredicted as high as 78%. SWC overpredicted yield loss in five of 21 instances and also underestimated in five instances. SWC did not overpredict yield loss to the same magnitude as HERB in many instances.

A field study was conducted on tolerance of four seashore paspalum cultivars to postemergence (POST) herbicides in Georgia during 1995 and 1996. Quinclorac (0.8 kg/ha) and MON 12000 (0.07 kg/ha) at recommended rates were the only POST herbicides that did not affect the performance of any seashore paspalum cultivar (≥ 89%). When the rates were increased to three times recommended, the quality of ‘AP 10’ (≥ 96%) and ‘PI 28960’ (93%) cultivars was not affected, but the quality of ‘HI 25’ (≥ 84%) and ‘K-7’ (77%) was lower when compared with respective untreated plots. HI 25 recovered within 4 wk, but K-7 required 6 wk or longer. Dicamba at 1.7 kg/ha affected the quality of K-7 (69%) more at 2 wk than the other cultivars (85 to 92%). Diclofop, imazaquin, and 2,4-D plus mecoprop plus dicamba significantly reduced the quality of all cultivars 2 wk after treatment (WAT). The quality of all cultivars was similar at 2 WAT with diclofop at 1.1 kg/ha (79 to 84%). However, when treated with imazaquin at 0.4 kg/ha, the quality of K-7 (65%) was lower than AP 10 (85%), HI 25 (77%), and PI 28960 (81%), and when treated with 2,4-D plus mecoprop plus dicamba at 1.1 + 0.6 + 0.1 kg/ha, the quality of AP 10 (75%), PI 28960 (72%), and K-7 (57%) was lower than HI 25 (87%). POST applications of quinclorac, dicamba, and MON 12000 were safe to use for weed control in paspalum cultivars, whereas the safety of diclofop and imazaquin was marginal, and 2,4-D plus mecoprop plus dicamba was unacceptable.

Field trials were conducted to evaluate weed control and crop safety with postemergence-applied herbicides in two cultivars of low-tannin seedling sericea lespedeza (Lespedeza cuneata). Two applications of either 2,4-D amine at 0.28 kg ae/ha or 2,4-DB amine at 0.56 kg ae/ha controlled sicklepod (Senna obtusifolia) ≥ 90%. Equivalent control of smallflower morningglory (Jacquemontia tamnifolia) required either two applications of 2,4-D or three of 2,4-DB. Three applications of either herbicide were required for comparable spotted spurge (Euphorbia maculata) control. Sericea lespedeza was not adversely affected when either herbicide was applied up to three times per season over two consecutive seasons. Tolerance to 2,4-D and 2,4-DB was equal between two sericea lespedeza cultivars. Absorption of foliar-applied 14C-2,4-D was greater in sicklepod and smallflower morningglory than in sericea lespedeza. Translocation of absorbed 14C-2,4-D was equivalent between sicklepod and sericea lespedeza but greater in smallflower morningglory than in sericea lespedeza. Absorption and translocation of foliar-applied 14C-2,4-DB was equivalent between sicklepod and sericea lespedeza. Furthermore, 14C-2,4-DB absorption was less in smallflower morningglory than in sericea lespedeza.

There are limited options for controlling large crabgrass in spring-seeded cool-season turf. The objective of this experiment was to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of dithiopyr and quinclorac to control large crabgrass in spring-seeded Kentucky bluegrass and perennial ryegrass stands. Quinclorac at 0.84 kg/ha and dithiopyr at 0.56 kg/ha were applied separately at various times prior to seeding and after emergence of Kentucky bluegrass and perennial ryegrass. Quinclorac applied once at 2, 4, 8, or 12 weeks after emergence (WAE) or split-applied preplant incorporated (PPI) + 12 WAE will give season-long control of large crabgrass with no injury to spring-seeded Kentucky bluegrass or perennial ryegrass. Quinclorac applied PPI or 0 WAE is safe to use in spring seedings, but it will not provide season-long control of large crabgrass. Dithiopyr applied 2 or 4 WAE will control large crabgrass season-long while not injuring spring-seeded Kentucky bluegrass or perennial ryegrass. However, dithiopyr applied PPI or 0 WAE will severely limit germination of desirable turf, and dithiopyr applied 8 or 12 WAE will not control mature crabgrass.

The tolerance of 10 broccoli cultivars to preemergence (PRE) applications of oxyfluorfen was evaluated in greenhouse and field experiments. Differences in tolerance among cultivars were expressed as differences in seedling injury ratings and growth and stand reduction. The cultivars ‘Pinnacle’ and ‘Mercedes’ were most tolerant, ‘Embassy’ and ‘Early Dawn’ were least tolerant, and other cultivars were intermediate in tolerance. Broccoli seedling weights and stand counts averaged across 10 cultivars and oxyfluorfen application rates of 0.125, 0.25, and 0.5 kg/ha were 70 and 81% of control, respectively, for the two fall-planted experiments and 39 and 50% of control, respectively, for the spring-planted experiment. Differences in tolerance among cultivars were less distinct in the cooler spring than in the warmer fall season. Oxyfluorfen application that caused stand and early growth reduction did not always affect broccoli head weight or quality or delay harvest.

Greenhouse studies were conducted to evaluate sensitivity of red rice ecotypes from Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Texas to soil- and foliar-applied herbicides. Ecotype response to herbicides was variable. Molinate at 4.48 kg ai/ha controlled red rice ecotypes 92 to 100% and cultivars ‘Lemont,’ ‘Mars,’ and ‘Maybelle’ 39 to 63%. Red rice control with thiobencarb at 4.48 kg ai/ha was at least 89%. The tank mixture of fenoxaprop at 0.08 kg ai/ha plus fluazifop-P at 0.10 kg ai/ha controlled red rice and rice cultivars more than for either herbicide applied alone. Red rice and rice cultivar control with paraquat at 0.70 kg ai/ha was 83 to 100%. Blackhulled red rice TX 4 was less sensitive to paraquat and glufosinate than other ecotypes and cultivars. Glufosinate at 1.12 kg ai/ha was required to provide at least 94% control of ecotype TX 4.

Studies were conducted to observe the effect of full and reduced rates of postemergence (POST) herbicides on seedling and rhizome johnsongrass (Sorghum halepense) at different growth stages. Herbicides and labeled rates included primisulfuron at 40 g/ha, nicosulfuron at 35 g/ha, fluazifop-P at 210 g/ha, and clethodim at 140 g/ha. Contour graphs to predict johnsongrass control at different growth stages and herbicide rates were developed. Excellent seedling and rhizome johnsongrass control was obtained with reduced rates of herbicides applied at the three- to five-leaf stages. Primisulfuron at 20 g/ha resulted in 90% or greater control of seedling johnsongrass in the three- to four-leaf stage. Rhizome johnsongrass at this growth stage required 30 g/ha of primisulfuron for the same level of control. Nicosulfuron at 17.5 and 26.3 g/ha provided 90% or greater control up to the four-leaf stage of seedling and rhizome johnsongrass, respectively. Fluazifop-P and clethodim were more effective than primisulfuron and nicosulfuron. Fluazifop-P at 105 g/ha resulted in 90% or greater control of seedling and rhizome johnsongrass up to the seven- and five-leaf stages, respectively. Clethodim at 35 g/ha controlled seedling johnsongrass at least 90% up to the eight-leaf stage. Clethodim at 70 g/ha provided 90% or greater control of rhizome johnsongrass if applied at the three- to four-leaf stages.

In two separate field experiments conducted over time, at-planting preemergence (PRE) applications of sulfometuron at 110 to 150 g ai/ha followed by March applications of sulfometuron at 30 g/ha or metribuzin at 2,580 g ai/ha at the start of the initial (plant cane) growing season controlled more bermudagrass and johnsongrass emerging in sugarcane from rhizome and stolon pieces than standard at-planting followed by March applications of atrazine at 2,240 g ai/ha (no control), metribuzin at 2,580 g ai/ha, or pendimethalin at 2,240 g ai/ha. Treatments containing at-planting applications of imazapyr at 280 g ai/ha or thiazopyr at 560 g ai/ha did not provide levels of control similar to sulfometuron. Crop injury in excess of 10% occurred only when imazapyr at 280 g/ha (18 to 42%) or sulfometuron at 30 g/ha (11 to 32%) was applied in March to emerging sugarcane. Sugarcane stalk numbers, stalk heights, and ultimately cane and sugar yields were increased when compared to the standards with all sulfometuron treatments and when thiazopyr was applied at planting and again in March.

Field and greenhouse experiments were conducted to evaluate postemergence (POST) soybean injury and weed control with CGA-277476 and cloransulam-methyl alone and in tank mixtures. In the field, visible soybean injury was 12 to 14% from CGA-277476 and 9 to 13% from cloransulam-methyl 7 d after treatment. Tank mixtures of either herbicide with acifluorfen or acifluorfen plus thifensulfuron were more injurious than CGA-277476 or cloransulam-methyl applied alone. Both CGA-277476 and cloransulam-methyl reduced velvetleaf dry weight 82%, and cloransulam-methyl reduced common ragweed dry weight 92%. Neither herbicide adequately controlled common lambsquarters, redroot pigweed, nor eastern black nightshade. The addition of acifluorfen to the spray solution improved common ragweed, common lambsquarters, redroot pigweed, and eastern black nightshade control with CGA-277476 and improved common lambsquarters, redroot pigweed, and eastern black nightshade control with cloransulam-methyl. Tank mixing thifensulfuron with CGA-277476 or cloransulam-methyl increased common lambsquarters and redroot pigweed control. In the greenhouse, CGA-277476 at 20 g ai/ha reduced velvetleaf dry weight 98%, and 79 g/ha was required to reduce common ragweed dry weight 93%. Cloransulam-methyl at 4.4 g ai/ha reduced velvetleaf dry weight 98% and common ragweed dry weight 94% at 8.8 g/ha. Chlorimuron reduced yellow nutsedge dry weight more than CGA-277476 or cloransulam-methyl. Antagonism of POST graminicide activity by CGA-277476 was grass species and graminicide related. CGA-277476 reduced giant foxtail control by clethodim but not by quizalofop. Cloransulam-methyl tank mixed with clethodim or quizalofop controlled giant foxtail.

Field experiments were conducted to determine suitable application timings and rates of MON 37500 for downy brome control in winter wheat. MON 37500 applied preemergence (PRE) or in fall postemergence (POST) provided better control of downy brome than when applied spring POST. MON 37500 at rates ranging from 19 to 33 g ai/ha applied PRE or fall POST controlled downy brome >85%. MON 37500 applied spring POST at 60 g/ha only suppressed growth of downy brome. Winter wheat was not visibly injured and maturity was not delayed by MON 37500 applied up to 60 g/ha at any of the application timings. Winter wheat yield responded positively to all MON 37500 treatments but PRE or fall POST applications usually resulted in greater yields than spring POST applications. Wheat yields progressively increased with increasing rates of MON 37500 up to 30–40 g/ha, above which yields tended to plateau or, in two instances, decline slightly. MON 37500 is an important new herbicide that should enable growers to better manage downy brome in winter wheat production systems.

Field studies were conducted in 1996 and 1997 at Belleville and Pawnee, IL, to evaluate single and sequential applications of glufosinate on tolerance of glufosinate-resistant corn and annual weed control. Glufosinate caused 0 to 13% corn injury 7 days after treatment (DAT) and 0 to 6% corn injury 28 DAT. Injury was characterized as stunting with glufosinate. Glufosinate at 400 to 1,200 g ai/ha did not reduce final corn height or grain yield. At Pawnee in both years and at Belleville in 1996, a single application of glufosinate at 400 g/ha controlled giant foxtail, velvetleaf, ivyleaf morningglory, and common lambsquarters 85 to 100%. At Belleville in 1997, sequential applications of glufosinate provided greater weed control (87 to 100%) than a single application (0 to 63%) because of weed emergence after application. Weed control with a single application of glufosinate or with nicosulfuron plus bromoxynil was similar at both locations. Height and grain yield of glufosinate-resistant corn were not different from that of glufosinate-susceptible corn (isoline of glufosinate-resistant corn).

Greenhouse studies were conducted to evaluate potential interactions among glyphosate mixtures with five acetolactate synthase (ALS)-inhibiting herbicides (chlorimuron, imazamox, imazaquin, MON 12,000, or pyrithiobac) for the control of purple nutsedge and sicklepod at two growth stages. Herbicides were tested alone at 0.5X and 1X rates (1X being suggested use rate for these herbicides) and in combination with glyphosate at 560 (0.5X) and 1,120 (1X) g ai/ha on 3-wk-old plants and at 1,120 g/ha on 6-wk-old plants. Glyphosate alone at 1,120 g/ha gave complete control of purple nutsedge and at least 78% control of sicklepod regardless of growth stage. In 3-wk-old purple nutsedge plants, three of the 20 herbicide combinations were antagonistic and 17 combinations were additive, whereas all five combinations were additive in 6-wk-old plants. In sicklepod, eight combinations were antagonistic and 12 combinations were additive in 3-wk-old plants, and all five combinations were antagonistic in 6-wk-old plants. In 3-wk-old plants, the glyphosate (0.5X) plus imazaquin (0.5X) combination resulted in highest antagonism in purple nutsedge control (79%), and the combination of glyphosate (0.5X) plus imazamox (0.5X) resulted in highest antagonism in sicklepod control (54%). These results indicate that mixing chlorimuron, imazamox, imazaquin, MON 12,000, or pyrithiobac with glyphosate does not increase glyphosate efficacy on purple nutsedge or sicklepod.

Field studies were conducted in 1992 and 1993 to determine the effect of atrazine and pendimethalin on velvetleaf competitiveness in corn. The three factors included in this research were herbicide, velvetleaf density (zero or nine plants per meter of row), and treatment (treated with herbicide or untreated). Herbicide treatments consisted of atrazine (0.6 and 1.1 kg/ha) or pendimethalin (0.6 and 1.1 kg/ha) applied preemergence. In 1992 and 1993, both atrazine and pendimethalin applied at 1.1 kg/ha greatly reduced velvetleaf growth and seed production and prevented velvetleaf from reducing corn yield. Both atrazine and pendimethalin applied at 0.6 kg/ha reduced velvetleaf growth and seed production in 1993, but only atrazine prevented yield loss in 1992. In the absence of velvetleaf, corn yield was not affected by either herbicide. These results indicate that sublethal exposure to atrazine or pendimethalin can significantly reduce velvetleaf competitiveness in corn.

Spring barley often is grown in rotation with winter wheat, and sometimes barley can overwinter in the subsequent winter wheat crop reducing grain yield and quality. Studies were established during 1996 and 1997 in winter wheat fields in southeastern Washington and near Moscow, ID, respectively, to evaluate control of ‘Steptoe’ volunteer barley with MON 37500, diclofop, and fenoxaprop/2,4-D/MCPA. Herbicides were applied to volunteer barley at two growth stages: two leaves to four tillers and more than four tillers with stems beginning to elongate. MON 37500 at 0.018, 0.026, and 0.035 kg ai/ha visibly controlled volunteer barley 83% or more at both application times. Diclofop at 1.12 kg ai/ha did not control volunteer barley, whereas fenoxaprop/2,4-D/MCPA at 0.66 kg ai/ha controlled volunteer barley 64 to 97% in 1996, but only 0 to 23% in 1997. In 1996 and 1997, volunteer barley density was reduced 80 to 99% in MON 37500-treated plots compared to the untreated control plots. Wheat grain grade was #1 for all MON 37500 treatments compared to grade #4 in 1996 and #3 in 1997 in the untreated plots. Grain price was reduced by dockage (barley kernels) for MON 37500-treated wheat $0 to $3.12/metric ton (MT), whereas price was reduced $23 to $26/MT for grain from untreated plots. In greenhouse studies, visible injury and height and biomass reduction varied among the 36 barley varieties treated with MON 37500.

The effect of DPX-79406 was evaluated on eight corn hybrids in 1993 and on 18 hybrids in 1994. Experiments were conducted each year at Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, and Stewiacke, Nova Scotia. Corn tolerance was similiar between sites but varied from year to year with certain hybrids. Generally, tolerance was hybrid dependent. Most hybrids displayed chlorosis and stunting 7 days after treatment (DAT) but recovered quickly. Injury at 7 DAT ranged from 8 to 64%. Grain yield indicated that ‘Pickseed 2444,’ ‘Pioneer 3921,’ ‘Pioneer 3979,’ and ‘DK 302’ were tolerant to 25 g ai/ha of DPX-79406. Pioneer 3979 and Pickseed 2444 grain yields were reduced with DPX-79406 at 50 g/ha in 1 yr. ‘DK 291’ and ‘DK 235’ were severely injured both years and did not recover appreciably from early injury. Responses of ‘Pioneer 3984’ and ‘Pickseed 2477’ varied from year to year, and they were considered sensitive to DPX-79406. ‘Pioneer 3947,’ ‘Pioneer 3962,’ ‘Pickseed 2290,’ ‘Pickseed 2299,’ ‘DK 220,’ ‘G-4011,’ and ‘N0565’ were tested only 1 yr and were tolerant to both rates of DPX-79406.

Imidazolinone-resistant and -tolerant corn hybrids give growers a new weed control option. Field experiments were conducted in 1993 and 1994 to evaluate imazethapyr for controlling weeds in no-till corn planted into winter wheat stubble in a winter wheat–ecofallow corn rotation. Imidazolinone-tolerant (IT) and imidazolinone-resistant (IR) corn were protected genetically from injury by imazethapyr that was applied preplant, preemergence, or postemergence to ‘Pioneer Brand 3417,’ ‘Pioneer Brand 3417 IR,’ ‘ICI Seeds 8532,’ and ‘ICI Seeds 8532 IT’ hybrids. No difference in corn injury occurred between IR and IT corn. Imazethapyr applied to resistant or tolerant corn hybrids could be used to control weeds in ecofallow corn. Imazethapyr at 35 or 70 g ai/ha controlled triazine-resistant kochia better than the standard herbicide treatment of metolachlor plus cyanazine.

Field studies were conducted in 1992 and 1993 to evaluate AC 263,222 applied postemergence (POST) alone and as a mixture with atrazine or bentazon for weed control in imidazolinone-resistant corn. Nicosulfuron alone and nicosulfuron plus atrazine were also evaluated. Herbicide treatments were applied following surface-banded applications of two insecticides, carbofuran or terbufos at planting. Crop sensitivity to POST herbicides, corn yield, and weed control was not affected by insecticide treatments. AC 263,222 at 36 and 72 g ai/ha controlled rhizomatous johnsongrass 88 and 99%, respectively, which was equivalent to nicosulfuron applied alone or with atrazine. AC 263,222 at 72 g/ha controlled large crabgrass 99% and redroot pigweed 100%, and this level of control exceeded that obtained with nicosulfuron alone. AC 263,222 at 72 g/ha controlled sicklepod and morningglory species 99 and 98%, respectively. Nicosulfuron alone or with atrazine controlled these two species less than AC 263,222 at 72 g/ha. Addition of bentazon or atrazine to AC 263,222 did not improve control of any species compared with the higher rate of AC 263,222 at 72 g/ha applied alone. Corn yield increased over the untreated control when POST herbicide(s) were applied, but there were no differences in yield among herbicide treatments.

Control of natural infestations of common lambsquarters and giant foxtail in 1993, 1994, and 1995 and of velvetleaf in 1994 and 1995 by postemergence application of glyphosate to glyphosate-resistant soybean planted in narrow (20 cm) and wide (76 cm) rows was evaluated. Planting glyphosate-resistant soybean in narrow rows and applying reduced rates of glyphosate when common lambsquarters, giant foxtail, and velvetleaf were at their actively growing stage 3 to 18 cm, 5 to 28 cm, and 3 to 20 cm tall, respectively, resulted in > 90% control. The effect of time of herbicide application was greater than the rate of herbicide application, especially within the wide-row soybean plantings. Applying imazethapyr in combination with glyphosate did not improve weed control or soybean yield compared with glyphosate alone.
