This systematic review evaluates the use of Normothermic Machine Perfusion (NMP) as a testbed for developing peripheral nerve and muscle interfaces for bionic prostheses. Our findings suggest that NMP offers a viable alternative to traditional models, with significant implications for future research and clinical applications. A literature search was performed using Ovid MEDLINE (1946 to October 2023), revealing 559 abstracts.

No studies using nerve and/or muscle electrodes for the testing or development of bionic interface technologies were identified, except for one conference abstract. NMP could serve as a test bed for future development of interface biocompatibility, selectivity, stability and data transfer, whilst complying with ethical practices and potentially offering greater relevance for human translation. Implemention of machine perfusion requires experienced personnel. Encompassing artificial intelligence alongside machine learning will provide a significant contribution to advancing interface technologies for multiple neurological disorders.

Human heart rate monitors (HRMs) are frequently used in equine studies to measure heart rate (HR) and interbeat intervals (IBIs). However, to date, the most commonly used HRM (the Polar® system) in horses has not been validated against simultaneously recorded electrocardiogram (ECG) signals during a range of ambulatory conditions. Polar® S810i and ECG IBIs were simultaneously recorded from six horses under three conditions commonly included in behavioural observation: standing at rest, loose in the stable and at liberty in a field. Following recording, Polar® IBI data were corrected for error processing in cardiac data. Corrected and uncorrected Polar® data were then compared with simultaneously recorded ECG data using a variety of commonly measured time and frequency domain parameters (e.g. HR variability (HRV)). Polar® data collected while horses were stabled or in the field were significantly different from ECG data, even following correction of the data, and therefore, it may not be possible for the two systems to be used interchangeably. This study indicates the need for caution while using Polar® S810i for collecting HRV data, unless horses are stationary, and even when the IBI data are corrected for measurement error.

Introduction. Extraction of juice from fruit is one of the most important ways of producing fruit drinks, but the extraction rate is hindered by natural factors. This has given rise to exploration of better methods such as ohmic heating to enhance juice yield. Materials and methods. Orange (Citrus sinensis), pawpaw (Carica papaya) and tomato (Lycopercium esculentum) were ohmic-heated at 9 V dc and 110 V ac, using different electrode combinations of copper / copper (Cu / Cu) and copper / aluminum (Cu / Al) at time intervals of (5, 10 and 15) min. Juice was pressed out through a muslin cloth, and yield, pH, color and vitamin C content were determined. Structural changes in the electrode were notified, while voltage drops across the system were studied. Results and discussion. There were significant differences in juice yield according to the electrode type, the fruit type and the ohmic heating treatment time. The use of Cu / Cu electrodes at 110 V ac gave the highest juice yield; tomato yielded the highest juice content per fruit, while pawpaw yielded the least. Cu / cu-treated samples gave the worst quality in terms of color and acceptability, with indication of a high electrolysis, which dissolved the electrodes. The pH decreased with the ohmic heating treatment times. The vitamin C content significantly varied with ohmic heating time, electrode type and fruit type, and decreased in pawpaw from (63.3 to 3.91) mg·100 g–1 for Cu / Al electrodes to zero for Cu / Cu electrodes with (10 and 15) min heating. Orange retained more vitamin C irrespective of the treatment. Conclusion. The results showed that enhancement of juice extraction by ohmic heating is feasible. For commercialization of the process, the correct electrodes devoid of electrolysis must be used.

Electroneuronography (ENoG) has become a useful test for estimating the degree of facial nerve degeneration and predicting the prognosis in patients with facial nerve palsy. Test results may be influenced by several factors, including the electrode positions, skin resistance, stimulus magnitude, and possible artifacts. Regarding recording electrode positions, different groups have used two different locations, the nasolabial fold and nasal ala. The authors compared the waveforms recorded from these two locations in ENoG recordings to obtain the optimal waveform. Twenty healthy volunteers and 25 patients with unilateral facial nerve palsy were included in this study. Recordings were carried out with the recording electrode placed on the nasolabial fold, followed by placement on the nasal ala after 10 minutes. The following parameters were assessed: (1) the supramaximal threshold, (2) amplitude and shape of the waveform, (3) interside difference, and (4) test-retest variability. There was no significant difference in the amplitude of the waveform, interside difference, and test-retest variability between the two groups. However, when the electrode was placed on the nasal ala, the threshold was significantly lower, an ideal biphasic configuration was present in almost all cases (97.5 per cent) of normal volunteers and it was easier to identify the waveform. Placement of the recording electrode on the nasal ala would be the preferred method.

In conventional solid-state electronic devices, junctions and interfaces play a significant if not dominant role in controlling charge transport. Although the emerging field of molecular electronics often focuses on the properties of the molecule in the design and understanding of device behavior, the effects of interfaces and junctions are often of comparable importance. This article explores recent work in the study of metal–molecule–metal and semiconductor–molecule–metal junctions. Specific issues include the mixing of discrete molecular levels with the metal continuum, charge transfer between molecules and semiconductors, electron-stimulated desorption, and resonant tunneling. By acknowledging the consequences of junction/interface effects, realistic prospects and limitations can be identified for molecular electronic devices.

In the last few years, the main thrust of research into cochlear implantation has centred around the development of advanced multi-channel implants. A new area of development is now concentrating on maximizing the potential of each individual electrode in order to improve the quality of hearing. This study involved the medialization of the cochlear implant electrode array using a silastic positioner in five patients. Two parameters were measured, namely current units needed to produce a stapedial reflex, and impedance levels between the electrode and modiolus. On insertion of the cochlear implant, readings were taken before the insertion of the positioner, immediately afterwards and at two months.
