Pediatric Audiology is a practical ‘how to’ reference text for the diagnosis and management of infants and children with hearing disorders. Both the authors are well respected audiologists with a wealth of experience in paediatric audiology. This 300 page book is accompanied by a DVD. Even though the book is intended as a reference text for audiologists, it is not too unwieldy for an ENT surgeon or trainee with an interest in paediatric audiology. The text is divided into five sections: (1) hearing loss – essential information; (2) diagnosing hearing loss disorders in infants and children; (3) hearing access technology for infants and children; (4) educational management of hearing loss; and (5) disorders requiring special consideration.
Each chapter is very well laid out, with an initial summary of the chapter. Most have key points that summarise the chapter. There are also ‘pearls and pitfalls’, giving practical advice for the procedure or the condition being discussed.
For me, the most interesting part of the book was the accompanying DVD. Rather than having a digital form of the book, this DVD demonstrates test techniques in paediatric audiology. It starts with an introductory section by Jane R Madell, followed by multiple examples of the different techniques used in paediatric audiology. This is accompanied by a commentary emphasising the teaching points. At the end of the DVD, there are further examples, without the accompanying commentary, for practice. Even though the average ENT surgeon will not perform these procedures, it gives excellent examples for a trainee who might not have had enough exposure to paediatric audiological techniques.
I would recommend the text book for its clarity and depth. The only problem, as with most US books, is that the protocols followed for the newborn hearing screening programme, and the legislation involved, do not match what is currently practised in the UK.
In summary, this is a fairly concise book covering most aspects of paediatric audiology, and the accompanying DVD is the best part of the book!
