APSA is pleased to announce that the National Science Foundation has renewed its financial support of the Ralph Bunche Summer Institute (RBSI) for an additional three years with a grant to Duke University! The program is supported by both the Cross-Directorate (Research Experience for Undergraduates) and Political Science Programs at NSF. Under the direction of Paula D. McClain at Duke University, RBSI is a program designed to stimulate the graduate school experience, provide mentoring, and expand academic opportunities for African American, Latino/a, and Native American undergraduate students majoring in political science. For 15 years, the institute has helped talented minority students between their junior and senior year excel in their undergraduate work and continue on to graduate school, many with full fellowships and teaching assistantships. Several participants have gone on to win prestigious fellowships including the National Science Foundation Graduate Fellowship, the Ford Foundation Dissertation Fellowship, the APSA Minority Graduate Fellowship, and awards/fellowships within individual institutions. Five former Bunche students have earned Ph.D.s and now hold university-level teaching positions in political science; another seven are writing their dissertations and will be shortly or are currently on the market; another 20 to 25 are in doctoral programs; and over 40 are working on or have completed a master's degree.
