APSA is pleased to recognize political science faculty who received campus-wide awards for teaching excellence during the 2002–2003 academic year. APSA and Pi Sigma Alpha, the national political science honor society, recognize award winning faculty each year through invitation to the APSA Honors Reception, issuance of a certificate noting their accomplishment, and announcement of their awards in PS and on the APSA web site. Jonathan Benjamin-Alvarado University of Nebraska at Omaha The UNO Alumni Association Outstanding Teaching Award in Social Science The award honors distinguished teaching, recognizing faculty who inspire students to important academic achievements through their leadership and expertise.
Charles S. Bullock III University of Georgia School of Public and International Affairs Excellence in Teaching Award Bullock is the first recipient of this award, which includes a cash prize. He is recognized throughout the University as a legendary teacher whose classes are regarded as the rite of passage for political science majors.
Maria Cowles American University Outstanding Teaching in General Education Program Requires demonstration of qualities beyond those of excellent teaching, emphasizing special achievements in fulfilling particular General Education goals.
John L. Foster Southern Illinois University at Carbondale 2002 Outstanding Teaching Award Given each year to recognize a faculty member who has demonstrated exceptional skill in the area of undergraduate teaching. The recipient is selected by the Undergradu-ate Teaching and Curriculum Committee and is awarded a cash prize of $5,000.
Elizabeth Bennion Indiana University, South Bend Trustee's Teaching Award This award is given to faculty members who show evidence of sustained and consistent teaching excellence. The award considers instructors' overall teaching performance, self evaluation, and student feedback when selecting recipients.
Professor Bruce E. Cain University of California, Berkeley College of Letters and Science Award for Distinguished Research Mentoring of Undergraduates Recognizing faculty members who have created extraordinary research opportunities and devoted unusual time and effort to encourage, challenge, and develop undergraduate researchers.
Russell Crandall Davidson College ODK Teaching Award This award is the student body's way of acknowledging the commit-ment, care, and extraordinary education that all faculty members give us by distinguishing one person whose teaching represents the highest level of what we cherish about learning.
Luis Ricardo Fraga Stanford University Associated Students of Stanford University (ASSU) Teaching Award Outstanding teacher of the year as nominated by students from the entire University and as determined by the Associated Students of Stanford University.
Suzanne Berger MIT Dean's Award for Distinguished Service to the School of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences Recognizing her major contributions to international education and research at MIT, and her inspired leadership of the MIT International Science and Technology Initiative (MISTI), which she founded.
Kerry Chase Tufts University Tufts UNITE Award Given to a tenure track member of the faculty for exceptional teaching and advising.
Karen E. Dean Illinois College Harry Joy Dunbaugh Distinguished Professor Award This award is given to a faculty member in recognition of their outstanding classroom teaching. The recipient is chosen by a student committee with the Dean of the College presiding.
Andrew D. Grossman Albion College Arthur Anderson Teacher of the Year Award The Arthur Anderson teacher of the year award recognizes outstanding teaching and scholarship.
Khalilah L. Brown-Dean Ohio State University Graduate Associate Teaching Award
Dewey M. Clayton University of Louisville Kentuckiana Metroversity Award for Instructional Development This award is a prestigious cash award that encourages the ongoing improvement of instructional development among full-time faculty at Metroversity institutions.
John C. Eastman Chapman University School of Law Professor of the Year Student-selected award recognizing a law faculty member for accomplished teaching, scholarship, and overall service to the law school.
Frank Guliuzza Weber State University John S. Hinckley Award Awarded to the outstanding faculty member at Weber State for excellence in exemplary teaching, scholarship, and service.
David S. Gutterman Willamete University Mortar Board Professor of the Year This award recognizes outstanding contributions to undergraduate education. Recipients are nominated and selected by the student body.

Tom Koontz Ohio State University, School of Natural Resources Promerene Teaching Award $1,000 award from the College of Food, Agriculture, and Environmental Sciences in recognition of teaching excelence, academic year 2002–2003.
Malik Mufti Tufts University Lillian and Joseph Leibner Award for Distinguished Teaching and Advising Awarded annually to one member of the faculty of Arts, Sciences, and Engineering in recognition for exceptional teaching and advising.
Kerstin Hamann University of Central Florida Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching Award The award recognizes outstanding achievements in undergraduate teaching over the past three years.
Jamie E. Jacobs West Virginia University 2002–2003 Eberly College of Arts and Sciences Outstanding Teacher Award An annual college-wide award, this award is given only to a select few of the 300 faculty members in the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences. The award carries with it a $1,000 cash prize.

Roger E. Hartley University of Arizona 2003 Don Wells Outstanding Faculty Mentor Award Presented by the undergradu-ate studies division of the Eller College of Business and Public Administration and given annually to one faculty member for excellence in mentoring students.
Donald W. Jackson Texas Christian University Chancellor's Award for Distinguished Teaching Awarded by the Chancellor to the outstanding professor of the academic year. Piper Professor 15 awards given annually from the Minnie Steven Piper Foundation to professors from the State of Texas.
Renan Levine Duke University Excellence in Teaching Award, Graduate Student The award is given annually through Duke's Center for Teaching to two graduate students who have distinguished themselves as teaching assistants or instructors.
Dennis Patterson Texas Tech University Mortar Board Outstanding Faculty Award The Mortar Board Outstanding Faculty Award is presented annually to those several faculty members throughout the University who have achieved the highest level of undergraduate teaching.
George E. Hudson Wittenberg University Alumni Association Award for Distinguished Teaching Presented each year by the Wittenberg Alumni Association in recognition of superior classroom teaching and contributions to the academic life of the students and faculty of Wittenberg University.
Quentin Kidd Christopher Newport University Professor of the Year The award is presented annually by the Student Government Association to one member of the faculty. The recipient is nominated and selected by students.
Kevin L. Lyles University of Illinois, Chicago Silver Circle Award Awarded by the senior class to several professors university-wide for outstanding teaching. UIC Flame Award The Flame Award acknowledges UIC educators who have inspired their students. The Award is given by the University of Illinois Alumni Association.

Ken Conca University of Maryland, College Park 2003 Excellence in Teaching Mentorship Award Established to recognize and honor a faculty member who has demonstrated outstanding contributions to undergraduate student teaching and mentorship. While inclusive of classroom teaching and traditional academic advising, the mentorship award recognizes a special relationship and commitment to undergraduate students' intellectual and character development through example, encouragement, and support.

Henry Edmondson Georgia College & State University Distinguished Professor Award The Distinguished Professor Award is the highest honor awarded to faculty at GC&SU. One faculty member each year is given the award based on career achievements in teaching, scholarship, and public service. The award recipient also makes the commencement address to the spring graduating class.
Ehud Eiran Brandeis University Outstanding Teaching Fellow Award Awarded “In recognition of noteworthy contribution to teaching at Brandeis.”
Richard N. Engstrom University of Wyoming Extraordinary Merit in Teaching Award This award is given by the University of Wyoming College of Arts and Sciences.
Judith Failer Indiana University Trustees Teaching Award This award recognizes outstanding teaching by full-time faculty at Indiana University. Only 6% of tenure-line faculty may receive this award. Professor Failer was selected for this award based on evaluations by her students and colleagues.

It recognizes excellence by individual faculty in fostering ethnic diversity in the University community and in responding to the academic and cultural needs of ethnic minority faculty, staff, and students.
Peter M. Siavelis Wake Forest University 2003 Reid-Doyle Prize for Excellence in Teaching This prize is the University's campus wide teaching award.
Professor Allan Saxe University of Texas at Arlington Induction into the Academy of Distinguished Teachers at UTA The University inducts one or two faculty each year into its Academy of Distinguished Teachers, who are recognized as the most accomplished and dedicated teaching faculty on campus.

Professor Vladimir Tismaneanu University of Maryland, College Park Distinguished Scholar-Teacher Award The program honors University faculty who have demonstrated outstanding scholarly achievement along with equally outstanding accomplishments in teaching, who have brought a passion for learning to their colleagues and students, and who serve as models of what a professor at a research university should be.
D. Stephen Voss University of Kentucky 2003 Alumni Association Great Teacher's Award Given to six faculty members across the university system each year. Came with a $2,000 salary adjustment, tickets to the UK vs. Tennessee basketball game, and an invitation to present the Julep Cup to a winning jockey at Lexington's famed Keeneland racetrack. First political scientist with a regular appointment to receive the award since 1965 (and only the second overall).
Eve S. Weinbaum University of Massachusetts Amherst College Outstanding Teacher Award Annual award for excellence in teaching in the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences.
Stephen Woolpert Saint Mary's College of California Professor of the Year The Professor of the Year award is given to a member of the faculty in recognition of distinguished achievement in teaching and scholarship. Nominated by faculty peers and selected by a committee of faculty and academic administrators, the awardee is given an honorarium and delivers a formal lecture before the faculty and invited guests at the annual Professor of the Year Award Ceremony.
