AMPHORAE OF DRESSEL 24 SIMILIS TYPE IN THE CENTRAL AEGEAN AREA (CHIOS–ERYTHRAI–KYME)

In memoriam Vivien Swan

An exhaustive presentation of one of the most important Chian amphora workshops that manufactured amphorae of Dressel 24 similis type, as well as ampullae, unguentaria, basins and funnels (vessels and equipment related to the olive oil industry), is followed by an analysis of the origin and evolution of this type since the Hellenistic period in the Chios–Erythrai–Kyme area. These discoveries bring to light the organisation of the amphorae workshops in this region, the same type of kiln being in use until the present day. Petrological and chemical analysis of the Chian and Erythraian fabrics, together with the identification of some Chian Dressel 24 similis amphora stamps on the lower Danube and Pontic market, also sheds new light on the flourishing olive oil industry of the central Aegean area during the Early Roman period.

Κέντρα παραγωγής αμφορέων Dressel 24 similis στο ανατολικό Αιγαίο (Χίος–Ερυθραί–Κύμη)

Η πλήρης δημοσίευση ενός από τα σημαντικότερα κεραμικά εργαστήρια που παρήγαγαν αμφορείς τύπου Dressel 24 similis, αμφορίσκους, μυροδοχεία, λεκάνες και άλλα αγγεία και εργαλεία που χρησιμοποιούνται στην παραγωγή και τη μεταφορά ελαιολάδου ακολουθείται από την ανάλυση των αρχών και της εξέλιξης του τύπου αυτού του αμφορέα από τα Ελληνιστικά χρόνια στον ευρύτερο χώρο της Χίου, των Ερυθρών και της Κύμης. Οι ανακαλύψεις αυτές φωτίζουν την οργάνωση των εργαστηρίων παραγωγής αμφορέων στην περιοχή αυτή. Ο ίδιος τύπος κεραμευτικού κλιβάνου επιβίωνε έως πριν από μερικές δεκαετίες. Οι αναλύσεις που έχουν γίνει στον πυλό των αγγείων που προέρχονται από τη Χίο και την Ερυθραία όπως και η αναγνώριση/ταύτιση ως Χιακών, ορισμένων ενσφράγιστων λαβών αμφορέων τύπου Dressel 24 similis στην περιοχή του Κάτω Δούναβη και στον Εύξεινο Πόντο προσφέρουν νέα δεδομένα για την ανθούσα βιομηχανία ελαιολάδου στον χώρο του κεντρικού Αιγαίου τους πρώτους αιώνες της Ρωμαϊκής περιόδου.
