The field of surgery for sleep-disordered breathing has grown rapidly, with new diagnostic and surgical techniques appearing in the last 10 years. Both the authors of this book have a very large practice and perform about a thousand surgical procedures for sleep-disordered breathing every year. This book is based on their vast experience.
The chapters are grouped into the different anatomical sites that contribute to the problems of sleep-disordered breathing. Each chapter has an initial ‘core features’ section, followed by the main section. I was pleased with the effort that has been made to present an evidence base for the opinions expressed.
The reader is initially taken through the basic techniques, followed by more advanced surgery. In addition to the illustrated surgical descriptions, each chapter gives the indications and contraindications for each surgical procedure, as well as post-operative care.
There is also a DVD version of the book which contains videos of the procedures explained in the text. It is quite nice to first read the book and then consolidate the learning experience by watching the actual procedure.
I found this book to be concise and to cover most of what a clinician with a sub-specialist interest in sleep-disordered breathing would want.
