Brachyspira spp. and avian intestinal spirochaetosis: anepidemiological review
Published online by Cambridge University Press: 05 September 2013
Abstract
Avian intestinal spirochaetosis (AIS) is primarily a disease of layer and broilerbreeder chickens exhibited by delayed and/or reduced egg production, increasedmortality, weight loss, and chronic diarrhoea. This disease is of concern to theegg industry because of the economic impact of reduced production and downgrading of eggs due to faecal-stained shells. Avian intestinal spirochaetosis iscaused by pathogenic Brachyspira spp. Thisreview summarises the species of Brachyspira that have been associated with AISand provides an overview of epidemiological studies that have investigatedprevalence, risk factors, and preventive measures for Brachyspira spp.
