Special Collection: Honoring Emma Hutchison’s Legacy
Emma Hutchison’s work on emotions and international relations has defined and informed a generation of scholarship on the subject. One of her first ever articles was published in the Review of International Studies in 2008 as she was completing her PhD at the University of Queensland. The article is entitled “Fear no more: emotions and world politics” and was co-authored with her husband and frequent collaborator, Roland Bleiker. Since 2008, Emma’s article became one of our top cited articles of all time and had a legacy in our journal and beyond. Her book, “Affective Communities in World Politics” was also published by Cambridge University Press and builds on this legacy.
This special collection includes her article and some of the fantastic contributions that built on Emma’s work on emotions, trauma, and affect. These thriving areas of international studies owe much to Emma’s commitment to expanding the way we think about affective communities, conflict and recovery, humanitarian intervention, and the politics of emotion. The breadth and depth of the articles in this collection attest to that.
