The 22nd International Radiocarbon Conference was held November 16–20, 2015, at the King Fahd Palace Hotel in Dakar, Senegal (a very pleasant country known for its warm hospitality, scenic locales, and famous historic sites). We present here the first of two Radiocarbon issues dedicated to the proceedings of this meeting. The next journal issue will feature the remaining proceedings articles.

Radiocarbon plays an important role in many research fields including earth, life, and environmental sciences, as well as archaeology and materials science. For this reason, radiocarbon meetings bring together scientists from across multiple disciplines to exchange information on new methods and theories. Such gatherings are exceptional scientific and cultural events.

We are pleased to say that Radiocarbon 2015 was a successful gathering of the international scientific community of radiocarbon users. It was an open, worldwide forum to discuss and exchange information on recent developments as well as the challenges that arise when various research fields merge during the study of radiocarbon dating. We enjoyed meeting with our fellow researchers in Dakar and would like to take this opportunity to thank them for their illuminating lectures and fruitful discussions. In addition to the scientific aspects of the meeting, attendees enjoyed two official receptions as well as excursions to scenic and historic Senegal locales including Gorée Island, the Pink Lake, the African Renaissance Monument, and the Saloum Islands and megaliths.

In closing, the organizers heartily thank all the attendees and dedicated committee members for making Radiocarbon 2015 a most enjoyable and successful conference.
