The Structure of Rapidly Solidified Powders of Ni3Al and Ni3 Al + B + Ti
Published online by Cambridge University Press: 21 February 2011
Abstract
Powders of stoichiometric Ni3Al and Ni3Al containing boron and titanium were produced by rapid solidification rate (RSR) processing. Most particles were found to be spherical; some had skins and some contained holes. Fractured particles were found, indicating possible brittleness. Particle size distributions were log-normal with an arithmetic mean particle size of 23.5μm. Both alloys exhibited a dendritic structure in which compositional differences were present. In addition, stoichiometric Ni3Al contained interdendritic lamellae. X-ray diffractometry indicated that the powders were only partially ordered.
