Given the widespread use of ultrasonography in medical practice, it may not be long before otolaryngologists start doing their own ultrasounds in the out-patients department. If so, then this comprehensive text provides all you will need to know about the application of ultrasonography in the head and neck. If not, the book will still be of interest to the practising otolaryngologist, mainly because it provides an excellent description of common ultrasound report findings the meaning of which may not be fully appreciated.

The chapters describe the ultrasonographic anatomy of all sites in the head and neck, and give detailed descriptions of the correlation of ultrasound imaging with disease states. The emphasis is very much on the practicalities of performing ultrasound; the book provides information on technique, and images in each chapter show pathology as it would appear ultrasonographically. The chapters on salivary gland and thyroid imaging are particularly well written and illustrated. The book also comes with a DVD showing dynamic video clips, to illustrate the process and interpretation of specific examinations and procedures.

Overall, this book is essential for any otolaryngologist considering setting up an in-house ultrasound service, and it should be a welcome addition to any ENT departmental library.
