This is the second edition of this book by these editors. The book is clearly aimed at multidisciplinary professionals, students and researchers working in this speciality. It offers a comprehensive review and update of the management of cochlear implantation. All the chapters are written by well known clinicians and researchers in the field. The chapters are well presented and well referenced.

Readers might find especially interesting the chapter on genetic predictors of cochlear implant outcome. As genetic testing improves, it may assist in identifying those implant candidates, such as children with multiple handicaps, who require additional intervention and more ancillary therapy to optimise outcome.

Similarly, the chapter entitled ‘Advantages of binaural hearing’ covers what is currently a very important issue, not only from the perspective of clinical effectiveness, but also as regards the current focus on cost-effectiveness. It is clear that clinical trials and careful assessment, both pre- and post-implantation, are needed. However, as the majority of the book's authors are North American, there is a slight tendency to review and report primarily what has been done in the States. This is notable in the chapter on acoustical and electrical speech processing, which makes little comment on the significant amount of work that has taken place in Europe.

This is a book that should be made accessible to all members of an implant team and professionals interested in supporting cochlear implant patients.
