5 Commonwealth Electoral Act 1949 (Cth), which inserted s 39(5)(aa) into the Commonwealth Electoral Act 1918 (Cth).

6 It should be noted that although Aboriginal people were not prohibited from voting on racial grounds, they were often prevented from voting due to other rules of disqualification, such as the law that people receiving charitable aid were disqualified from voting.

7 This, of course, was conditional on meeting the other qualifications to vote in the colonies.Grounds of disqualification from'voting included being a woman, a prisoner, a person of unsound mind or a person receiving charitable aid. There were also requirements of residency in the electorate for a certain period of time.
