Martin Hodson and John Bryant have written the most captivating and elementary textbook on modern plant biology. It might be read from cover to cover by anyone seeking an introduction to the subject, but seems especially suited to high school, undergraduate and vocational courses. The book begins with an excellent synopsis of the evolution of plants, and then describes the biochemistry of plant cells, the control of gene expression and the processes of plant development from embryo to establishment. This is followed by chapters revealing the ontogeny, structure and functions of roots, stems, leaves and flowers, their associations with beneficial organisms and their responses to environmental cues. The acclimation and adaptation of plants to abiotic stresses, including extreme temperatures, waterlogging and drought, salinity and exposure to various pollutants, and their interactions with other plants, herbivores and pathogens are then considered. The book concludes with the authors’ thoughts on plants and climate change, the conservation of biodiversity and the importance of crops for global energy and food security. The text is perfectly articulated and referenced both within and between chapters. The further reading is enticing and not intimidating. The book is illustrated with colour photographs of the plants referred to in the text and simple figures suitable for teaching. There is a glossary of common terms and a useful index. I did not notice many mistakes, but, since I am fond of the Nernst equation, I will mention that 2.303 (RT/zF) is not always 59 (p. 134). This might be explained in a future edition.
