page 361 note 1 The statement that ‘illegal action would not be blamed (for this is the meaning of αἰτίαν ἔχω) where there are so many witnesses to its innocence' does not necessarily imply that the στραηγός speaking admitted that he was encouraging an illegality. This passage in vi. 14 is usually wrongly translated.
