The Autumn Quarterly Meeting was held in London, at the London Hospital Medical College and the Royal Society of Medicine, on 16 and 17 November 1978, under the Presidency of Professor Desmond Pond.

Since 1970, College assessors on consultant appointments committees have been asked to supply information on a confidential basis about applicants and those interviewed. The information includes the number of applicants, assessors' opinions on their training and experience, numbers interviewed, their quality, and the main deficiencies of all those seen; finally, the number of overseas graduates applying or short-listed. In addition, the assessors are asked to make any general comments about the interview, and these have sometimes taken the form of a letter or memorandum, paricularly when the assessor has felt unhappy about the candidate appointed.

Towards the latter part of 1959 some thirty lawyers met at the Ministry of Health under the chairmanship of the late Sir Sidney Littlewood. We were the first members of the legal panels of the Mental Health Review Tribunals for the four London regions.

The museum continues to attract many visitors. Psychiatrists, nurses, social workers, prison officers, students, and researchers in many fields have visited the museum, often spending many hours examining historical records. Local schools, colleges and the Open University have also made use of the facilities available. Harvard and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology have each encouraged students to visit the museum in pursuit of their specialized studies.

Articles submitted for consideration for publication in the Bulletin should be received at least two months prior to the date of publication. The length should not exceed 2,000 words, and two copies of the manuscript are required.

The Spring Term of lectures, tutorials and clinical demonstrations in psychological medicine and allied subjects commences on 19 January and continues until 6 April, each Friday between 10.15 a.m. and 7.00 p.m. Full details from Dr Marshall W.
